Look up their current password on their twitter - you'll need it to enter. I returned to the rbar with some friends last night so I am updating my review. I really enjoy the atmosphere. Maybe it's the old-timey, divey decor. I'm a sucker for old buildings with those decorative ceiling tiles. When you've got that nighttime thirst, nothing hits it quite like an ice cold Mexican beer with lime. The first time I was at rbar, The bartenders were friendly and courteous and the Pacifico I ordered was ice cold. The second time it was pretty difficult to get the bar service even though it was 8pm and the place was basically empty. They are currently serving buns by The Bun Truck from their kitchen. Their Dweji steamed bun was pretty good, certainly the real deal, but didn't quite live up to my expectations. Same with the kalbi bun - the beef was over seasoned, with its marinade dominating the other flavors. Their katsu bun was easily the best - stick to that one. The fried pork is complimented by the coolness of the cucumbers and cilantro. Thick cucumber slices hold their own up against the crispy fried pork. My friend ordered some rosemary fries. The portion was big and the rosemary garlic seasoning was awesome, but they were way over salted! On my second visit we took advantage of their 7-9pm happy hour special of 2buns and a side for $8. Definitely a good deal for some top LA food truck fare. Ill be back to rbar, but probably only during happy hour. read more

I checked out this spot last night for the first time! It was empty considering it was a Tuesday night. I totally loved the dim lighting, ample seating and divey (I think I just made that word up?) feel to it. Michelle the bartender was very delightful, even gave me a birthday shot (YAY for VIRGOS!!) lol My selection of beverage for the night was Peroni- crisp, light and refreshing. They had other beers on tap too (Firestone, Lagunitas) and also some bottled/canned beer. They do have a full stocked bar as well, but considering it was a Tuesday, I decided to behave. I will definitely revisit this place...I'm sure the vibe changes on the weekends, but I don't care. Good drinks and good service is all I need :) read more

I like this bar a lot, it is easy to just walk right by this blacked out building. First you must knock and know the password. You can find it on their Facebook page. Once inside they have a good variety of foods and lots to drink. You get better deals in here if you are paying cash. The grilled cheese and tomato soup is hella good! This place was located a few blocks away from my old apartment so naturally I found myself there quite often. The place is owned and operated by females, which I find awesome! It's such a divey vibe; very pirate-esque mixed with a straight up hole in the wall. The kind of hole in the wall that you want to go to! All of the food is superb. I've had just about everything on the menu but their best items by far are the hangover soup, biscuits & gravy, and their wings. They do a cheap bottomless mimosa, and offer karaoke most weekends during the day. This place is a great find in Koreatown - be sure to check it out! read more

My friends and I walked here after eating at Road to Seoul. This place has a cool vibe. The bouncer was actually really nice and not douchy like many you tend to come across. Inside is dimly lit and the drinks are pretty good. The music was a little interesting, but who am I to judge? I liked that they had old '30s videos playing on the screens, it really added to the overall vibe of the place. Would definitely come back. read more

I'd love to know if anyone was ever actually turned away for not knowing th password. Ours was a couple months old, so we had to run the password hint gauntlet, figuring it out after a few tries (not sure about the Dangerfield reference). The doorman was very cool about it. I suppose if you give a doorman something fun to do they will be in a better mood. But it was fun and it sent us into the bar in a good mood. We got there around 11pm on a Saturday and had no prob snagging a table for 5. High marks for chill vibe and pretty decent music but needs to have cheaper drinks to make the 5 star grade. They serve excellent food. They have a password (not a secret password, but just to keep out the riff-raff) I ordered grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. It was delicious. Their drink prices are amazingly affordable, but the staff is very pleasant and compared to other snobby bars, this one is very homey. Dark little nooks and crannies with candle light for ambiance to hide away with your swashbuckling homies and part take in drunken shenanigans. Interesting drink menu with little twists like rose water and blood oranges. The chick bartender was a little aloof and lofty (thus the one star dock-age) , but hey, it's a pirate bar. Always a good time. now better due to the fact that they updated their beer menu: Union Jack IPA on tap, Lagunitas IPA on tap, Old Rasputin Bottles unfortunately, their tasty tasty brews are $8, now, don't get me wrong, they have $4 cheap ass low-lifes ( I mean MGDs) but how are you going to sell $4 beer and $8 beer in the same bar? Speak easy bar (need a pw to get in, you can find it on their FB page) that is pirate themed (odd). Dark and wasn't too busy for a Thursday night at 11pm. Only one bartender and one server, but they got out our drinks for 9 people pretty quickly. Consensus was that the drinks were good. We only came here for drinks, so I don't have any recommendations on food. Overall an okay spot to check out. Pretty chill lounge-y spot if that's what you'r looking for - go for it! read more

I came here on a Wednesday late night with a good friend of mine. it's a chill loud spot to have karaoke and great for group of friends for some real happy hour! A little pricy though. Loved the setting, but very dimmed! Nice atmosphere. Kind of small. There is no pirate theme like as other descriptions may say. Dimly lit it's a nice little dive. Its sooo nice to find a bar in my neighborhood that i actually like! (sorry hank and frank's, but you just weren't cutting it!) R Bar is great! Its located in a really cool, unmarked building on the corner of 8th and irolo. Yes, you need a password to get in...but i think that's fantastic! (and very easy to find on myspace or by calling ahead). Inside is very, very dark and quite intimate. Was definitely loving the vibe/crowd of this place. It's definitely a dive bar....but picture the nicest dive bar you've ever been to in your life, and BAM!......R Bar. Bartenders were friendly, drinks were moderately priced, they take cards, and it wasn't too crowded for a Saturday night. Basically, I'm sold! R Bar is definitely my new fav bar in Ktown! A gorgeous and quaint little speak-easy style bar, modeled on the hideaway spots of the 1920s Prohibition Era complete with a secret password to enter the establishment. Classy staff dressed in as-close to era as they can get, great beer, good food, and a mere $5 cover to see whatever band might be playing? Count me in. That other themed speak-easy bar might be better, but not having to go out and find period dress is a plus for R Bar. But, it is always fun having that password. Go out and find it online and then impress your friends by having an in to an otherwise nondescript looking building that houses a beautifully decorated bar. Parking in the area is hell, though. So be prepared for that. You might have to find parking a few blocks away at a meter or in a residential area. Read all signs, and you might get towed if you park in the supermarket lot across the street. read more

This is by far my FAVORITE little bar in K-Town! Great service and great prices! Happy hour specials change everyday (ie: $4 whiskey, $10 PBR & Burger, cheap cocktails the bartenders think of) but they always have $3 wells and bottle beers $2-$4. Even after happy hour prices are super reasonable. Food: I recommend the burgers, Garlic fries, and Asian chicken wings! Yes there is a "password" so it helps to call ahead, but it's not like they strictly enforce this or anything. Me and my friend forgot to call and answered "Uh...we're really thirsty?" I have only been at this place once and I have to say that even if is a small bar, everyone there seemed to be cool and friendly. Dark atmosphere, band playing and definitely a cool place to go with a group of friend for a birthday party etc. I will definitely go back. The only bad thing is find a parking. I might have fallen in love with the place after my first visit! The weekend brunch is definitely worth checking out. They offer bottomless mimosas when you order food. Speaking of the food, it's a lot better than your average bar. From wings to pancakes to burritos, I enjoyed everything I ate here. The staff here is very chill. When a friend who was throwing a bday party here said you will need a password to enter, I thought...hmm, is this some swanky, elite kind of place? So I read through the Yelp reviews before I went so that I can get a sense of the vibe of the place and the dress code. From the reviews, it sounded like a very chill place. Well needless to say, this place was just like any other bar to me. The interiors are extremely dark. Be careful because the floors are wooden and uneven. It reminds me of the Redwood Bar in downtown? But it is a cool place to hang out to listen to juke box music or the band that's performing that night. Drink prices are reasonable. I didn't try the food. Back to the password...I really don't think it's necessary but kinda fun to say it to the bouncer...the password for Friday night was "No Yanky My Wanky". =) read more

I had a BLAST at this pirate ship themed bar hidden in K-town. Call ahead for the password. Once you find parking (which kinda sucks because it's in a residential area) then you get to the door, and a guy looks out of the peephole and asks for the password because they want to keep out the, "riff raff". Totally understandable. The bartenders are very personable and offer reasonably priced brews, not to mention their sampler platter of finger foods was REALLY good. I was surprised at how my entire party raved over the wings because we've all got our fave wing spot, and I must say, these wings were finger lickin' good. The bar is themed around a pirate ship, all wooden inside, lots of nooks n crannies. Great atmosphere, not your typical Hollywood snooty crowd. Did I mention it's hidden in Korea Town, just a black building on the corner so be on the lookout. read more

I practically live at the R Bar, now. It's walking distance from the Red/Purple Line so it's Metro-accessible and the crowd is a pretty cool crowd. On Tuesday nights, there's Action Trivia. (Starts at 8:30 but really closer to 9.) You can also do karaoke here and they carry Hendrick's Gin. It's not too expensive and it's not too pretentious, like a lot of bars in LA can be. (Expensive, and pretentious.) Some flaws! Sometimes the kitchen will be closed in ways that will be random and befuddling to you, if you were counting on trying the ridiculous goodness that is the chili cheese fries. (I deduct a star for that.) Otherwise, it's a great, cool bar for chatting with friends and having fun. read more

Crowded for a password entry type of place... It is pretty cool, I like the place. It's a cool dark old world kind of bar and it does close at 1am, however, they make it really easy to stay and drink after 2am, or at least it seems like it... The valet situation is kind of weird actually, but I did valet. I had a lot of fun there, my only real problem with it is I think they charge way to much for their drinks considering the type of place it is and location, I mean damn, it's pretty much the same price as The Standard! I've seen too many new bars open that start off soo good and eventually get taken over by the lemmings, that maybe it's a good thing. inside the space is very cool, unpretentious, comfortable. the bartender, who is also the owner was very friendly. since we got bad directions to the place, it was an ordeal getting there, so she made our drinks extra stiff!! we ordered an appetizer, the sausage, took a while, but i think there are still working out some of the new bar kinks. i found out from the door guy that it use to be the bar for the gang MP-13. that makes the place even more of an adventure to hang out...maybe that is why it's password entry only..ha ha juke box was very good, TV on the radio, pixies... i will definitely be back! read more

This ktown 'speakeasy' staple has been around awhile and for good reason. It's dark, alluring and seductive. The soft, romantic lighting scheme maintains an intimate vibe throughout and there are ample amounts of wooden booths and lounge areas for large parties and couples and the password to get in is easy enough to find on the facebook page. The music is complimentary not overpowering and the crowd is friendly and unpretentious or least compared to most like-minded establishments maybe that is because it's been around awhile and now it is just loyalists and local neighborhoods peeps that are in attendance instead of those who roam only to be seen at the newest and trend setting establishments. There is something to be said for waiting a 6-12 months or even years before going to a new bar. If it is worth its weight in gold, it will still be there and the inherent awesomeness can truly be enjoyed. R Bar you got some good ass genes. You will live a long life. read more

Really nondescript outside, with nothing but mexican mercados and apt buildings around. You question if you're in the right place. You walk up to a door that's seen better days and is on it's 20th coat of peeling paint. You peer into the small window through the door wonder how to get that huge silhouette of a figure's attention, but he walks up and asks "know the password?" Scared you read it wrong or maybe they just updated it, you blurt out a weird phrase with doubt in your voice, but to your relief the door opens. Yeah dramatic opening but for a cool place like this why not add in a little prose? I came when Shamrockabilly was throwing down some live music and it was awesome, fun and loud. In a small place with it's square set-up you get a real intimate vibe; connecting with the band and fellow patrons. It was like you were at a friend of a friend's party. Great neighborhood bar, def my new go to spot. Happy hour deals are too good to be true! Cocktails are punchy, but just the right amount, made well, and for hh deals, you wouldn't expect that. I can say this much: the place looks nice on the inside. Otherwise, I don't feel safe leaving the car parked in the neighbourhood, walking from the car to the bar, or walking from the bar back to the car. The password system is stupid, and they didn't card me which just says to me the place is probably crawling with underagers which I guess is alright if you're a creepy guy with a mustache who's into that sort of thing. They have a juke box filled with awful music. Kirsten Dunst showed up and ruined my night. Woman dresses like a forty-something cat lady. A couple of friends and I found this place after chowing down on some tacos at El Jalapeño just down the street (King Taco had a 2 hour wait - what??). Found it on Yelp and thought it would be interesting to go to a bar that had a password. Or I guess, rather, a "speakeasy". We found it on Facebook and discovered the password and stepped inside. It's a really chill atmosphere, not too crowded (Monday night), and nice and comfortable. We came on Karaoke Night, which was a lot of fun, even just as a spectator. Grabbed a few beers as well as a mixed drink. Not the cheapest beers by any means, but OK. Beers were between $5-8, from what I gathered. Cocktails were $8-12. Well shots are $5 if you pay cash. Beware, credit charge is $2. They do have an ATM, but I assume that charges at least a $1 service charge as well. Can't say anything about the food, as we just came for the drinks. Perfect place for Halloween (It was April when I went there tho..) There was a DJ & Karaoke machine but not many people were singing - it was rather quiet, which I liked it. Fries were great too. It is a private bar so you may need a password.! read more

Drinks are good, the DJ on the night I visited was trash and what they played on their TV was awkward lol. Bartender was so nice. overall it was great except the damn music the DJ was playing. We went in because we heard The Doors and then everything else was just 60's, only enjoyed about 3songs the whole night. 3.5/5 read more
