I've never done a follow up review, particularly when I had already given the place 5 stars, but this has quickly become my favorite restaurant. We took our daughters and we all ordered something different. You know it's amazing when everyone is insisting you get a bite of theirs, they want to share the joy they're experiencing! Had dinner here with friends. Staff was super friendly and helpful. And for a small place it doesn't feel small or like you're on top of other tables. Food was just so-so. The giant dumpling was the best dish and it was good, but was more like a steamed rice noodle...the sauce was the secret though, very tasty. Everything else was just ok. My brother and I visited here before I flew back home. We'd never tried Burmese food before! The cashier was very nice, he gave us great recommendations. Food was pretty pricy for the quality, I felt like I could have made most of it at home, save for the mushrooms -- they were absolutely incredible! Wow wow wow Came here on a random whim because it was close and I hadn't tried it and I was blown away. We got the Tofu Nway, Mala Aloo, and Khao Payne Sane and everything was amazing. Absolutely incredible Burmese food, amongst the best I've ever had. My highest recommendation. I stopped in for lunch with a friend, and we shared three dishes. Ordering is done at the counter, and staff bring the food out shortly thereafter. We ordered: -Lahpet Thoke ($14; prepared vegan by omitting the fish sauce) -- this is the classic Burmese fermented tea leaf salad. Their execution of it was top-notch, with fantastic textures from the deep fried fava beans, pulses, crunchy cabbage, crushed peanuts, fried onions, tomato, and of course the tea leaves, and dressed with a nicely acidic dressing. Phenomenal stuff. -Shan Tofu ($11) -- this is the classic Burmese chickpea tofu dish, though this particular version of the dish was quite different: very creative and impeccably prepared. You get thin slices of chickpea tofu, topped with crushed peanuts, shredded cabbage, and other stuff, accompanied by a somewhat rich, tangy, oily, somewhat sweet dressing. This was incredible. -Tofu Nway ($16) -- this was the most unusual dish we ordered. The dish is centred around rice noodles and cooked with a chickpea tofu sauce -- I had never seen tofu used this way. Coming with it is mustard greens, a couple dal fritters, and various garnishes. Brilliant combination of flavours and textures once again. Friendly, quick service, reasonably priced, very generous portions. I can't praise the food enough. Don't miss this when in PDX. read more

I tried Burmese food for the first time at another place and it left much to be desired. My friend proposed we have Burmese food again, and she mentioned this place. My impression is that this place is pretty solid, and now I have good impression on Burmese food, which is pretty similar to the other Southeast Asian fare. The fried chicken reminds me of the herb fried chicken we would have in Indonesia (and make at home) complete with the coconut rice and chili condiment. There is another Thai place in PDX that serves similar fried chicken and this one is way better. I tried the mushroom noodles. As advertised, it is indeed an umami bomb. So savory and there is depth in the flavor. Pro tip: ask for chili oil and pour some on the noodles and then mix, thank me later. Highly recommend! read more

I liked almost everything we ordered here. Or maybe bc I missed Burmese food a lot. My favorite is always the tea leaf salad. The worst was the large dumpling. Wasn't that great, kind of just eating mush. Everything else was super flavorful and very different tastes. The chicken was nice and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The potatoes were so good I didn't need sauce. And I'm a sauce person. All the noodles were cooked al dente. The short rib was so tender and mixed well with the additions on the rice. We stopped by one of our favorite local restaurants in SE Richmond. We always leave with extra food as the portions are typically more than you can eat! We came late after 9pm one Saturday night without reservation. Parking was easy and the restaurant was pretty empty. We were four of us and ordered food at the ordering window. All food came very quickly. Ghin salad was nice and crunchy. Mala aloo was very different- a little soggy because of the oil underneath but I think that was the intention and it was flavorful nonetheless. The Mix fry plate was really good with each of us having our favorites. The entrees were disappointing though. The tofu nway and 1/2 chicken entrees were both very mediocre. Menu is quite limited, but hey that's not necessarily a bad thing. Do the things you do well - right?! The restaurant size is small but its quaint. And the staff is friendly. We ordered the tea leaf salad, rice noodle dish and beef curry. Tea leaf salad was mainly cabbage with fried fava beans. And I think it had fried mung beans too. But it added a great crunchy contrast. At another Burmese restaurant, I've had this with more tea leaf and less cabbage. Overall, it was a decent salad! Rice noodle dish - sorry dont know the official name but there are only 2 noodles on the menu: 1 rice noodle and the other was a wheat noodle. So there you go. It had ground pork, some veggies with a light sauce - not a dry noodle dish. It had a mild spicy heat to it and it was pretty good! Beef and potato curry - was served with rice and a side of yogurt cucumber. It also had some sliced jalapeno, but I did not find it spicy. The contrast of the curry and the cucumber was very nice. Rangoon had an excellent selection of food options compared to other Burmese restaurants that offer more, but hard to choose. They narrow it to a good amount. The salads are delicious and unique and I chose the Laphet salad with mint i leaves, it was citrusy and refreshing. It was hard to choose an entree though because it was either curry noodles or a yummy noodle and egg dish with meatball. All of it tastes great though. This place also tastes better compared to other Burmese restaurants in Portland. read more

We ordered the large rice dumpling because it sounded interesting but it was very underwhelming - the rice skin is too thick, the pork filling and sauce are both bland. Wonderful spot serving Burmese food in a casual but airy wooden interior space. A little pricey but reasonable for food quality and quantity. Having been to the country itself and a lot of Burmese spots, the tea leaf salad was delicious and right up there with the best - a little more bitter due to the leaves not being as fermented and could have skipped the celery, but great anyway - hitting the nail on lots of crunchy bits. Pork rib dish was delicious as well. Ribs were incredibly tender without being too fatty and came in a broth/sauce that was sort of a combination of chicken broth, chimichurri, and some acid. Part soup part gumbo, I was really impressed at how the ribs retained the flavors of the dish without a sauce per se. Rice was perfect. A very hearty, comforting dish that could be split 3 ways as an appetizer or a main dish for 1. Food and ordering was quick. Look forward to returning next time I'm in Portland! read more

First this place had easy seating after ordering from the counter. The food comes in small plates that's perfect to share with a large group of people. I tend to rate high. I had a great experience at Nan Yang in the early days. It is fine for restaurants to be different in their family traditions within the larger country or region. The laphet salad is a large portion I ordered to go. I would bring this home and make 2-4 salads of it with more greens and cherry tomatoes in season. It has all the bits which are hard to source making this dish at home. The eggplant curry with white rice was sweet and with mint leaves. The rice was very salty. I called them back to check. They claimed it was the fish sauce. I have never heard of colorless clear fish sauce which would leave the rice white, rather than brown. Maybe it's possible. I'd bring this one home, throw out the rice and make your own rice. So I guess there is a silver lining in a way. I suggested they taste their rice. They said they had and thanked for calling. They said that is the way they like it. I use a fair amount of salt, more than most. That is my calibration for his review. Maybe they add extra salt on hot days? I guess if you like extra salty rice, its OK! They were polite and fast when ordering for take out. The price is reasonable. The dine-in space where I waited was nice. read more

My friend came from out of town and had this spot on her list. I had never gone but it always smelled amazing. We ordered the tea leaf salad, fried chicken w rice and beef with roti. Everything was really delicious. Our favorite was the beef dish..soooooo tender. She thought the tea leaf salad didn't have enough tea leaf and her cocktail wasn't very good, but all in all we'd definitely come back. They refunded her cocktail when they saw she didn't drink it, too. I look forward to trying the rest of the menu. We sat outside on a nice evening. The indoor seating seems a little cramped. On a road trip going down the west coast looking for amazing places to eat on my way down, after looking for a few hours trying to decide where to have my first dinner all over portland I decided to go here. Oh boy how glad I am I did that! All of the staff was super friendly and helpful (Aiden was the guy who helped us with everything the entire night), but the food absolutely one of the best ive ever had in my life and im not over exaggerating. Ive never had Burmese food and if you did have it yet the best way I can describe it is "the best out of south asian/south east asian and asian cuisine all in one". Super precise and flavorful dishes, nothing fancy or pretentious, just absolutely spot on food. Rice was amazing, the noodles quality themselves was better than most expensive italian restaurants you can go to, the big dumpling is addicting and i could bathe the sauce it comes with. Had my mind blown last night by this cuisine and will definitely be on the lookout for more Burmese food places but I doubt anywhere can top this off. Never have I ever wanted to go back to a place to try the whole menu! This place is soooo good!!! Tried the Lahpet Thoke Salad, perfect mix of savory, sweet, & crunch!
