I very rarely review, even when the place is excellent. Rangoon Bistro is so ridiculously good that I felt I had to share about it. My wife and I had been in LA for 5 days prior to eating at Rangoon eating one amazing meal after the next. Rangoon ended up being the best food we had eaten all week. I personally have eaten here twice and was blown away both times. Being somewhat unfamiliar with Burmese food it's revelatory; a cross roads of all good Asian things: it has pickled lemon and coconut and noodles and rice and tea leaf salad. The salted coconut milk is truly the best thing ever. After my first time here I kept thinking about it and craving it. The proprietors are all extremely nice and welcoming and the breathe building is super cool. In a city full of excellent food this is standout; I had just eaten at Jitlada in LA which is a James Beard recognized famous Thai place and I thought that Rangoon was way better (though it's not the same food and not apples to apples). Cannot say enough good about this amazing gem of a restaurant, go here and get anything because it's all great (but most especially the salted coconut milk). read more

Fantastic lunch today - we ordered the tofu nway (chickpea tofu over rice noodles) and the roasted eggplant dish and loved both of them. The staff was beyond kind, offering us a Burmese iced tea and sweet/salty coconut milk on the house (because, they said, it was so hot outside!). My favorite was the eggplant, so much flavor packed into this dish. My husband really loved the creamy chickpea sauce that the rice noodles were in. We will be back for sure to try the rest of the menu as his weekly softball games are nearby. read more

Love me some SE asian food! :9 We ordered the Eggplant Thoke (DELISH), Tofu Thoke (overshadowed by the free Shan Fries, I think I like Shan/Chickpea tofu more than soy tofu!), Salmon Mohinga (bf gives it thumbs up) and the Kyay Oh Si Chet - savory deliciousness! Portions are generous, so we definitely got more than one meal out of this. I will definitely be back to try more noodle dishes and the curry! read more

If I knew Burmese food, I would feel like it would be authentic like what you get a Rangoon Bistro. I've had some good Burmese food in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the dishes have become a bit standardized maybe because it was influenced a long time ago by one chef. But in Portland at Rangoon Bistro, it's a surprise of variations. Not sure which is the most authentic versions (at Rangoon or in the Bay Area restaurants I've tried) but it's quality dishes made with fresh ingredients and served with friendliness, both at the counter and the kitchen that says goodbye as you leave. Some of the variations is the lahpet thoke or tea leaf salad. This is a classic. Here, it's presented already mixed from the chef right before it's brought to the table (instead of mixing it yourself) and spicier than other versions, but it definitely has the tea funkiness I love and the mixture of texture and crunch for an enjoyable light meal. Then the shan khao swe is the shan noodles that I enjoy with tomato sauce and pickled vegetables. Initially when I first got it, I felt it was too saucy compared to others I had. But I've come to appreciate the comfort of eating this dish (although I still wish they had more pickled vegetables). The Burmese tea is always a solid choice but now glad to have cocktails on the menu to make dinner a bit more special on the weekends. This is a charming neighborhood restaurant that is becoming a destination restaurant. I'm glad it's in my neighborhood so I can come at a whim when I get my Burmese cravings. read more

This place just opened tonight on 50th and we decided to drop in - it's amazing! I highly recommend the Si Chet Khao Swe with soy roasted mushrooms. The mushrooms basically melted in my mouth and were SO DELICIOUS. We also ordered Tohu Kyaw. I've never had chickpea tofu before, and it was so so yummy! The restaurant is cute, service was great, and I'll be back within a week for more noodles. Go now! You won't regret it! read more

What a delightful experience! Every weekend is a culinary adventure for us as we enjoy trying new restaurants and food carts in Portland. So excited to have discovered Rangoon Bistro. We are frequent patrons of Top Burmese and expected a similar menu. We were so excited to discover dishes we have never tried before and the meal was incredible. We ordered six menu items including the Burmese Ice tea and sweet coconut milk which tasted like a salted caramel drink. Everything was delicious. The food blew me away. I wasn't sure what to expect when I read Burmese food and boy was it good! We got noodles with pork belly, the mango curry, the green tea salad, and the bean fritters which might have been my favorite, with the curry taking a close second. Service was great. Wow. Rangoon Bistro restored my faith in the PDX dining scene. I have been out to a lot of ~bougie~ talked about restaurants in PDX recently, and for the most part, every one of them had something missing & left me feeling sort of bummed out. It wasn't until I ate at Rangoon Bistro that I realized what it was--none of them had the amount of love and passion for the food that Rangoon Bistro has. The chefs joy and journey and passion is so apparent in every single dish we got (we got a bunch of dishes that we shared family style [the noodles with the mushrooms btw made me cry from joy--perfect in every funky, creative, amazing way]). After every bite I took I couldn't stop just thinking about how much care for the ingredients and the flavors went into it. There were so many different textures and flavors and even temperatures--truly magical experience. Once again, the mushroom dish smacked me in the face with umami like I have never experienced before (while also having amazingly textured noodles). I think I told the chef that when I die I want that to be my last meal haha! Likewise, the experience itself in terms of service was top notch. Our server at one point noticed that a lot of the food we had ordered was the vegetarian version and came to our table to make sure that fish sauce was ok (it was! but we still noticed how thoughtful the server was to ask that). Likewise, the owners and chefs were there when we were dining. They were so gracious and thankful that we were having a great time and were open to sharing their experience creating the food and once again, their passion was up front and center. Thank you Rangoon for putting your passion for this food first and for sharing that with us. I will be back again and again with friends and feel so fortunate to have this in the neighborhood. Maybe the problem was that we got take out, and that we're vegetarian? But this was a massive disappointment. All the noodles were overcooked, and all the ingredients in the hot dishes had congealed on the short drive home into an unappetizing, gelatinous mass. The only vegetable in most of the dishes seemed to be (overcooked) mustard greens, which have an overpowering taste. The description of Khao Pyan Sane had me at "very large dumpling," but a giant mass of mustard greens inside a mushy noodle was not at all appealing. The fritters were OK; the people seemed sweet. This place is amazing. I saw a write-up in one of the local event papers, and I'm so glad I took a chance on it. The service was superb - friendly and helpful. The food came out fast and was so delicious. I got the fried chickpea tofu and a tomato/bean salad that was a special for the night. My friend had the tofu nway.
