It was our first time here, and so we had the server at the counter recommend his favorites.... we picked a crispy salad, a rice dish with coconut in it, and a noodle dish with pork and red sauce.. he said we'd be in "Burmese food heaven." I was really excited to try this place based on mentions they've recently received in the local foodie media, along with reviews here, but can't remember being as disappointed with a new spot in awhile. Came here with my wife and some family visiting town, so we were able to try a good amount from each section of the menu. The fried chicken was the best dish, but still nothing to write home about. Seemed a little overcooked & dry, without a ton of flavor on its own. The accompanying sauce was just ok. The Pork Dumpling was large, as the menu says, but served as a weird gelatinous mess. The pork didn't seem spiced or flavored on its own, and the sauce on it just tasted like sweet and sour ketchup. My biggest disappointment was with the pickled ginger salad, which tasted like moldy dirt. I'm not sure if that's authentic and the way it was supposed to taste, or they dropped it on the floor, but it sure didn't make me want to visit Burma for the food anytime soon. Lastly the coconut curry with vegetables was super basic. Nothing distinctly interesting, just felt like something I could make at home. I will say the service was super-friendly, and the food came out quickly. I also appreciated the rockabilly music they were playing that night. Found this joint from eaterpdx being listed as a best new counter service restaurant. I came almost close to closing so they ran out of a few dishes that caught my attention. Ended up selecting the tea leaf and rice (lahpet htamin), quarter fried chicken, and the pork shank noodles (meeshay). The tea leaf and rice was a simple dish with just an egg on top but flavor of the rice packed a punch. I loved the spicy kick of the dish. The fried chicken was good but I do wish they offered different dipping sauces, as the one provided was too sweet. Only dish I didn't enjoy was the pork shank noodles. It was a bit mushy and the flavor was bland. Regardless, I think the menu looks intriguing and I'd be interested in trying other items next time. read more

Recently visited this place. The food was all exceptional. The service was perfect, didn't feel too rushed. The place has a comfy ambience especially for being noon on a Saturday in Portland? Any other place would be packed and instead this place is small (which crowded, I cannot imagine it not feeling claustrophobic a bit) which is perfect for a nice, cozy Saturday lunch. I look forward to returning! For parties of more than 3 or 4 I would recommend calling in advance cause the ideal size is probably 4 without feeling too crammed but I do think that their set up (making food easy to share) is better enjoyed with a smaller crowd. absolutely fantastic place. went here with 8 people, and everything about the experience was great. although restaurant was smaller than i realized, they had no issue accommodating our large group. the menu was nice and simple with just about 6-8 options to choose from for entrees, and the service was surprisingly quick. the big dumpling was pretty good, but a bit challenging to eat, and the sauce was a little too vinegary for my taste. the beef noodles were excellent, as were the cripsy potatoes and the tea salad. would definitely return to try more of their yummy dishes! read more

I went for lunch and really loved it--I tried the tea leaf salad (that I've forgotten the name of) which had fantastic texture and flavors. It was such a delight!! I also had the very large dumpling that had pork/cabbage filling and I loved that too, even though I wasn't that sure how I was supposed to eat it--cutting with a spoon seemed best. You order at the counter and the person working there was friendly, helpful, and chill. I felt like the prices were very reasonable because the food seemed of high quality and even had stylish presentation without being pretentious. This is an addendum to my first review where I said its the best Burmese food outside of Burma. I was wrong. My wife, who's from there, told me the food in Burma is no longer what it used to be. Too many artificial ingredients because they're cheaper and easier. So I am changing the review to: The Best Burmese Food on the Planet. Ok, maybe a bit much, but I have never had any dish that was equal to any of Rangoon Bistro's. Portland is so lucky to have this place. We eat there weekly and are always amazed at how delicious and natural it is. They told us they will only use organic, local ingredients. Its stunning how brilliantly delicious the food is there. I've been a fan of RB's Tofu Nway since my first bite at the King's farmers' market and have showed up with my Tupperware in hand since. After freaking out that their stall was missing one Sunday (blessing is disguise) I frantically visited their brick and mortar to experience the abundance of culinary delights they have to offer. I can't even chose a favorite but their pork and mango curry is a staple, which I rotate other dishes around. Good good people with mad skills, who obviously put so much thought and love into the dishes. My appreciation for Portland goes up when I get to eat at places like this ! read more

Just picked up my food from Rangoon Bistro and the food was sumptuous. The flavors were so good... all unique. I ordered the tea leaves salad, the pork noodles, fried chicken and Bayar. This was a nice find on a Sunday afternoon. Started at the food carts across the street, but the two that I wanted to try were closed. Rangoon Bistro was my backup. So happy to try this place. Ordered Khao Swe Thoke (a cold noodle salad) and Shan Khao Swe (warm noodles with a meat sauce topping). Both were super flavorful and filling. Will definitely come back again. All I can say is wow. Went in yesterday with a coworker and we were both delighted and blown away by everything. Welcoming ambiance in a somewhat "cold" feeling building. They have done a great job with making it feel homey and inviting. The service is order at counter and they bring it out to you but the owners bring out the food and explain the dishes and talk about their process with you so it doesn't feel like a cafeteria. Truly earnest service and incredibly fresh, bright, spicy flavors. I've just eaten here yesterday and I already want to go back today. read more

I was craving novelty and longing to taste new flavors, and I tend to lean toward Asian cuisine in general - so when I re-stumbled upon Rangoon Bistro it had a hunch it would check all the boxes! This place is so sweet and simple - the service was warm and helpful and they even had a high-chair for our 9 month old baby. Three dishes (two noodle dishes and the 1/4 fried chicken) was just right for the two of us adults to share - the servings aren't tiny, but they aren't large either. We cleared our plates no problem - the food was so flavorful and delicious! I loved reading a bit about the co-owners and chef - what a journey from Burma/Myanmar to Portand! I got the ¼ chicken with coconut jasmine rice and a sweet chili condiment. The chicken was cooked perfectly--crunchy but juicy, and was a good portion, though I wanted a little more flavor in the skin, and the condiment was too sweet for the chicken. I would have preferred something more savory or spicy. The rice was creamy and delicious. I also got a special chilled sugar snap pea salad/app. A bit small, but the peas were perfectly cooked and simultaneously bright and savory, with tamari, fish sauce, and fried shallots (and lime? Tamarind? Something with zing). Just under $30 for both. Little bit pricey, but these people know what they're doing. I'll be back. read more

The food was pretty good. There is a LOT of pretty good food in this town, especially SE Asian food. The tea leaf rice was a bit salty yet nicely flavored, the veggie curry a bit spicy and straightforward, and the beef salad was quite delicious. It was all good. However, after finding my way in through a multipurpose hallway, seating myself, walking to the counter to order, and paying and tipping up front, the dining "experience" overall was just lackluster. After being exposed to rather loud, fairly aggressive music throughout the experience (I'm not elderly or hard of hearing, so I was fine with it), at 8:30, the kitchen staff decided to BLAST their music at a VERY high level in order to vacate the premises. I'm used to being treated like I'm a burden at restaurants these days, but after not receiving much "service" whatsoever, and graciously pre-paying and pre-tipping in full before the meal and doing the whole overly polite/walking on eggshells restaurant customer etiquette, I'm just kinda tired of being treated like garbage at restaurants. I won't go back here again. You can just politely tell people you're closing soon rather than attempt to deafen them with your 8:30pm punk rokk. That's fine for 1:45am at a dive bar, just obnoxious at 8:30 on a Wednesday evening. read more

Delicious Burmese food! I had been to Rangoon Bistro at the King Farmers Market on Sundays, and I just tried their new pick up location. Ordering was so easy, just texted the order and set up a pick up time. When you arrive just text again and they brought the food right to our car. Loved the SI CHET KHAO SWE, the Umi noodles were so chewy and the duck was garlicy and tender. The kids loved the chickpea tofu and the dal that came with the samusa thoke. There are tons of vegetarian options and plenty of meat for the carnivores too. So happy that these guys have a take-out option outside of the farmers market. read more

I started dining at Rangoon Bistro shortly after it opened, and it quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Often I would get the Ghin Salad and the Pork Dumpling, which together make a great meal. I loved the noodles and salads so much, that it took me months of eating there before I tried the best dish on the menu. The Fried Chicken is the best fried chicken I have ever eaten, even better than the chicken at Hat Yai. And the coconut rice that comes with it is positively addicting. read more

Literally the best meal we've had in years. The flavors were so unique and perfectly balanced. The ambiance is casual but certainly nice. The guy at the front was really kind and thoughtful in making recommendations to us. Also, my kid had a little bit of a fit about nothing in particular, and one of the staff came out and said, "Don't cry! Have a sweet coconut milk." and gave us one on the house.
