Hidden gem on Main Street! It's under Der Kuchen Laden...there is a staircase on the left side of the building as you are facing it, and another behind the store. We've eaten here multiple times, and it has never disappointed!! The price range is in the $10 - $25 range. They do have multiple german dishes on the menu but I have not had any as I'm not a huge fan of that type of cuisine; I know it's crazy since I live in Fredericksburg a German town. Stephanie has been our outstanding waitress who has never steered us wrong on her suggestions and recommendations!! So if you are lucky enough to score Stephanie as your server, let her guide your decisions on your meal journey. The specials are displayed on a chalkboard and have always been spot on. My husband and I have had: roasted quail, lamb chops, ahi tuna, chicken fettuccini, and pork chop. All delicious and re-order meals, except the pork chop, it was a little dry in the middle. Pro Tip: Save room for dessert or come for just dessert!!! My husband and his friend absolutely rave about the Peach Bread Pudding!!! Someone call Gordon Ramsey!! This place was absolutely horrible. If we had friendly and sweet people serving us, I would maybe give it a 2 star, but everyone just seemed annoyed. My "thank you"s fell on deaf ears as they turned and walked away. It was busy- let's give them that. The food? Absolutely disgusting. My husband ordered the jaeger schnitzel- the meat was bland and room temperature. He's a Marine- the man will eat anything. I've never seen him pass up a gross meal (even if it's a MRE). He refused the potato salad, and couldn't choke down the red cabbage- which tasted straight from a pickled jar. Me? I had a bad run in with the German food the night before at a different place, so I decided chicken parm was easy. Who could mess up chicken parm? This place. I have never, ever refused to eat something at a restaurant. I have never sent anything back. I'm telling you- this was disgusting. The mozzarella was warmed, not browned, so it was a clump of semi solid cheese on top of watery chicken. The "home made marinara"- was something I cannot describe. Chunks of whole celery, red peppers- tasted like vinegar and something super sweet. The worst smell ever. Served with a side of fettucine Alfredo- and a large heaping of NUTMEG! It's all you could taste. Nutmeg. Salt. And pepper. Absolutely digesting. Let me repeat- I felt terrible telling the lady, kindly, that I just couldn't eat it and we would just like the check. Her eggs were sunny-side up but definitely not cooked, and mine was just "eh." Our waitress came to the table only very minimal. We are still sitting here for her to come get our check. Quaint historic basement German restaurant~ Came in for anniversary dinner, ordering filet minion and New York steaks. Very low quality steaks. Medium cooked steaks came out over cooked. Servings of rich pasty mashed potatoes and overcooked canned green beans. Salad was extra, no rolls. Becker Cabernet was the highlight at $8 a glass. Disappointing. We were wanting to experience German food with a nod to the town's roots. This restaurant, although set in the basement of the town's historic hospital, simply lacked. The service gave us three separate waiters. We did arrive around 1 pm, but there was no continuity. The bathroom was right next to the kitchen and opened awkwardly into a prep area and major traffic hall. Ugh. Jaeger Schnitzel: The veal's accompanying sauce was packaged, which was tipped off not only by the flavor but the color. The side of red cabbage was mushy. I asked for a substitute for the potato salad and glad I did. The bacon in the green beans was the meal's saving grace but they were still canned beans. German Sampler: nothing outstanding to the sausages, cabbage and German potato salad. My motto is "it's just one meal" but it was a missed opportunity for this out-of-town visitor. read more

Rathskeller was a fantastic place to eat, nice atmosphere in the basement as a rathskeller should be, which is something I learned from the explanation of the history of the place on the menu. The food was amazing, I got the German Sampler Platter and it was just a perfect taste of authentic German food. The service was great and we were never left wondering about empty drinks or anything. This restaurant was featured on the show Goodtaste with Tanji a few years ago so we thought we'd try it the next time we were in Fredericksburg which was earlier this week. We went there for lunch. My wife had the German Gobbler sandwich, basically a turkey reuben, and it was okay, nothing special. I had The Kraut, which was a sampler plate of bratwurst, knockwurst and Jaeger schnitzel with sides of sauerkraut, potato salad and red cabbage. I was disappointed. I expected the schnitzel to be somewhat crispy, but it wasn't and not all that flavorful. The bratwurst was meh and the knockwurst was tough and difficult to cut. I couldn't even chew it. The side dishes were okay. When our server finally came to by to present the check I mentioned that the knockwurst was basically inedible, it was still sitting on my plate, and she just nodded and wound up adjusting our check by giving us the local worker discount. I had high hopes for this place because of the good review it got on the Goodtaste program, but that was 4 years ago and maybe things have changed since then. read more

Perhaps the worst meal we have ever been served in all the years of visiting Fredericksburg. We ordered The Kraut, which the menu lists as having 1/2 portions of bratwurst, smoked sausage & jaeger schnitzel, with red cabbage & potato salad. What arrived was a piece of jaeger schnitzel that was at MOST 3" in diameter & it was still COLD in the center. Accompanying this mess was 1/2 slice -- yes 1/2 slice of a 3" long smoked sausage & 1/2 slice of 3" long bratwurst, each of which had been left on the grill so long they were black on 1 side, totally dried out & TOUGH, & the cabbage & potato salad were both barely room temperature. We also ordered Pasta Crudo, which is glowingly listed on the menu as containing: "sauteed tomatoes, basil, TOASTED garlic & olive oil". What was served however, absolutely ZERO to do with the menu description. Instead, it looked like a bowl of tomato noodle soup that was setting in 1" of liquid. It was clearly nothing more than a can of "undrained" tomatoes that had been dumped on top of "undrained" pasta & there was NO basil OR "toasted" garlic. What was in the bowl was not 1, or 3, or 6, or 9 pieces of raw garlic cloves, but 18 -- yes 18 cloves! The kitchen staff were so lazy they had not even bothered to mince the garlic to add flavor, let alone "toast" it. We should have absolutely sent the entire mess back to the kitchen & walked out. The table service was pleasant & courteous, but you could not give us free meals to return. This kitchen staff could care less what they are sending out to customers. A truly concerned kitchen staff would NEVER serve this kind of nonsense. read more

To whom it may concern. This not a review on service but the waiter but in the actions of the cook on the morning of 11-11-2003. My wife has a severe avocado allergy. We order food and asked to please have no avocado and it was an allergy to our waiter. We watched him tell the cook staff as we were seated close to the kitchen. We got our food and noticed that avocado had been removed from the top of my wife's omelet. There was still some there. We told are waiter and he took it back. The cook got angry and slammed stuff around and yelled at our waiter who was a perfect gentleman to the cook. The cook proceeded to flip the food over and send it back to us. And watched my wife to see if she would have a reaction. She did not eat the food. She felt like he was waiting for here to choke. We left with out a fuss and tipped our waiter. Safe food handling was not that cooks priority and he was very un professional. We understand food handling because we own a food business and we have to ask about nut allergies a lot with what we do and we have a customer that is highly allergic to tree nuts. Do better chef. Having a German meal is a must upon your visit to Fredericksburg. Rathskeller is the perfect place for that experience. All three of us had German sausage dishes for our meal. My companions loved their meals. Personally, I found it to be bland and lacking flavor. The cheddar mashed potatoes could have been great if they were warmer. That all being said, my dinner mates raved about it and they are huge foodies so perhaps it was just my taste buds. One star deduction because they were out of two products we wanted to order and used the excuse "spring break" to explain the rationale. The service was great and friendly. The wife and I decided to try the Rathskeller for dinner on the last night of our visit to Fredericksburg. First, it is located in the basement of a building built in 1888, which gives it a nice atmosphere. We went on Sunday evening so there wasn't a wait to get a table. Our service was excellent - quick with our drinks, quick with the meals and numerous check ins for water and iced tea refills. The wife had the German sausage platter and I had the Jager snitzle. Both were good, but not what I would consider 5 star excellent. What was 5 star was the peach bread pudding. Overall a nice dinner in a nice place with great service. read more

It was a drizzly overcast day and Main Street was already crowded so we decided to try Rathskeller since we were physically standing in front of the establishment. Normally we check the ratings first but today we took our chances. I had the Red Beans and Rice and it was good. My husband had the fried sole and said it was greasy. The atmosphere was charming and cozy. Customer service was good. My only complaint was that our waitress failed to bring our credit card back with our ticket and after she walked off and we noticed it missing we didn't see her again. When we first entered Rathskeller, they said it would be a 45min wait plus 2 other families were waiting behind us. So after the 45mins, we went back in just to see those families already seated before us. The hostess even asked, "is there someone still up there?" Indicating, they were not checking if customers were still waiting upstairs in 50 degree weather.
