I picked this place because they had a kid's menu and sure enough my kids loved the food. My ordered the grilled bread and butter flight appetizer and it was amazing. I could have eaten my weight in that bread. My husband and I split the prime rib and everything we ate was amazing. I have to say the baked potato was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. As far as ambiance and environment the place is beautiful. The whole restaurant is very clean including bathrooms and staff was very engaging. For my father and me, the allure of Wrangler's Prime Rib Barn in Fredericksburg was backed by the weight of an overall 4.7-star Yelp rating and a glowing endorsement from Tanji Patton, a fellow gourmand whose opinion I've grown to trust. I watched her recent "Good Taste" feature wherein she interviewed a full dining room of beaming patrons and commended the menu's standouts, painting a picture of a hidden gem that warranted a 90-minute drive from San Antonio. Our experience with Wrangler's began two weeks prior. A significant communication snafu regarding our reservation threatened to derail our plans before they even started. However, the owner salvaged the situation by issuing a $100 credit for the confusion. It was a kind, generous gesture of good faith that smoothed over the initial frustration and heightened our anticipation. Unfortunately, the goodwill established by the owner's gesture could not save the lunch that followed yesterday. To say my father and I were disappointed would be a gross understatement. In lieu of my typical journalistic style, I'll list and review each item individually. Caesar salad (1.5/5.0): The salad my father received bore little resemblance to the one featured prominently on Wrangler's website. The photo on the website (also posted on Yelp by the business owner) features green, leafy romaine stalks topped with dressing and what appear to be fried onions or shallots. At least 1/3 of the lettuce head my father received--cut lazily into two halves--consisted of hard, unpalatable white ribs. The dressing, which my father described as merely serviceable, sat in a pool at the bottom of the bowl, leaving the lettuce largely undressed. The accompanying crostini were stale and borderline inedible. Prime rib spring rolls (1.5/5.0): The allure of thinly sliced, desiccated prime rib stuffed into spring rolls was lost on me, but our server recommended them enthusiastically. The rolls looked and tasted oily, likely a result of being fried at too low a temperature. They sat in a bath of honey mustard that overpowered the dish and rendered the bottoms of the rolls a mushy mess. A garnish of raw carrots and cilantro added crunch but little else. Suggestion: pair the spring rolls with a cheese sauce and top them with *pickled* carrots to add some brightness and acidity. Smashburger (2.0/5.0): The patties were dry and tough from the center to the edges. My father detected little to no seasoning on the burger. The bottom bun functioned more like a sponge for the copious amounts of grease from the patties and sautéed onions. The accompanying fries, while acceptable, were standard cuts, not the intriguing sidewinder fries pictured on Yelp. Ribeye lunch special (1.0/5.0): This was unequivocally one of the worst ribeyes I've eaten in my life. If you follow my reviews, then you know I've ordered ribeyes from steakhouses of varying price points, so I know what constitutes a great steak. Unfortunately, the ribeye I received at Wrangler's ticked none of the boxes. It was tough, unseasoned, and consisted of approximately 40% gristle and huge globs of unrendered fat. See my attached photo for proof. The steak needed a hotter grill to render the fat (which should have been trimmed better initially) and produce the desired Maillard reaction. The salad that accompanied the steak was overdressed with what tasted like a balsamic vinaigrette. It was too sour and overpowering for me to stomach. The reviews on Yelp and Google are almost unanimously positive, so I am clearly in the minority. The interior features a lovely view of the adjoining vineyard, so at least that's a positive. Maybe we caught the restaurant on a bad day, or maybe the predominantly older clientele, most of whom strike me as locals, simply lack perspective and have no basis for comparison. The service was excellent. The staff was very accommodating, and we were seated quickly. Our waitress was polite and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, the food was very good. The only disappointment was the Prime Rib Popper Dip, which barely contained any prime rib; and when I say barely, I mean just a small sliver if you can even call it that. The dip should be called Caramelized Onion dip because there was no prime rib. However, the prime rib entrée itself was cooked well and full of flavor. We came here on a Friday for lunch. It is located at a winery with plenty of parking. It wasn't too busy and we were sat right away. We were sat by a window looking in to a barrel room and you could smell the wine in the air. Unfortunately, prime rib isn't available on the lunch menu. Came in for our anniversary dinner since we were staying nearby. Its part of a vineyard and tasting room complex so its easy to miss, but worth the trouble! We shared the 16oz prime rib, the mushroom pasta, the enchanted mushrooms and the mashed potatoes. We got the cesar salad to start and finished with the cheesecake. The prime rib was absolutely fantastic, as was the pasta and sides. The cheesecake? Oh my gosh, some of the best Ive ever had! The only disappointment was the salad: it came as full leaves of romaine and that made the dressing (which was excellent) stick to some of the pieces and not others. Even when we cut it all and retossed it, some bites didnt have enough dressing and some had way too much. The crustinis that came with it to pass for croutons were stale and a let down. Other than the crustinis, everything else is a minor niggle and due to the excellence of the dressing, worth overlooking. Service was friendly and attentive, very professional! This is in a new metal barn with about a quarter of the building for the dining room and the rest divided up between a barrel room and what must be other wine production facilities. Dining room is big enough for about 30 or so guests, so I dont think it would ever get too loud. We liked the pictures and decor, its a cool little spot. For what we paid ($200 for the both of us, food only, no drinks) we felt we got a good value. The portions are generous, especially that towering cheesecake! We're not wine drinkers and dont really fit in to that crowd, but the double date that were seated right next to us seemed to really enjoy the wine. read more

We opted to split the 12oz prime rib, with loaded baked potato, and added in a side of green beans. The waitresses split our prime rib for us, and it was a huge portion and tasted amazing. We stopped by for lunch because they are dog friendly and great reviews. Glad we did, I just wish I'd taken picts of what we ate! They are located in the building behind with Longhorn Cellars, which makes it tricky to find them. They have covered outside tables, but they also allow you to bring Wranglers food (order to go) and have a dog in the Longhorn Wines tasting room - which we did! The Texas Dipper was delicious, but hubby says he'd order again with extra meat and cheese. (He's a hard core carnivore.;) The steak fries were amazing! They were thick spiral cut that looked like Longhorn horns, crispy on the outside, tender inside and seasoned with a housemade seasoning that was outrageously good. Try them!! I was so excited to try here, but there were so many things against the place. It was hard to give a good review. Pros, the service was good. Cons- 1st the parking options are 100% terrible at night. There was ZERO lighting outside and walking in heels down the gravel drive was bad. The steaks were severely overcooked. The poppers were lacking flavor for our liking. The baked potato was huge and typical baked potato. I don't think the bread at $16 was worth it. Although my steak had decent taste the amount of gristle in my "prime rib" that came out grilled was alwful. When I asked about prime rib it's usually a roast, not open flamed. I understand it's the same meat but not how I ordered it. I was definitely disappointed that it wasn't worth the money paid. Really weird that it was so loud in there to carry on normal conversation. A very last-minute Friday night visit to this steakhouse proved to be an excellent choice! The young man at the host stand was very kind and quickly got us seated. The young women serving us was very prompt but not overly intrusive; she also gave us recommendations that we enjoyed . The Valentines Prime Rib special was excellent! We went for the Prime Rib and wine, the Prime Rib was OK, may have been from Cisco as far as I could tell, same flavor. Mine was 1/3 the size of his (uneven carving) I didn't complain because I would have asked for a doggie bag for the next day had there been a normal portion. The mashed potatoes were so dense I refused to eat them all and the salad is a bit meager. The wine was good, and there is a nice place to sit while you wait to get in the cavernous dining room. Ok, when you find a fabulous restaurant, you have to share it. Wrangler is top notch and they are already filling every table , every time the doors are open. Our steaks were so perfectly cooked, we really didn't have to use a knife to cut them. The flavor was above and beyond any traditional steak I've ever had. We wanted to love Wranglers but having eaten at the best steakhouses in Texas, Wranglers just didn't live up to the hype. First of all, the restaurant is set inside the Longhorn Cellars Winery, the atmosphere was an open metal building which wasn't exactly a cozy experience. Secondly, they only serve wine. No beer or cocktails and no bar which is one of our requirements for an exceptional steakhouse. Thirdly, the food. My prime rib was the smaller cut and my boyfriend's was the bigger cut but you couldn't tell them apart. Problem was the steaks were sliced very thin and they just kind of flopped on the plate. They were also very rare. I mean bleeding rare. No bread because the chef is picky about what he gets. We just didn't care for the food. However, the service was very good. Our waiter, Jason was very friendly and attentive. Probably won't be going back again. We are in Fredericksburg every six weeks or so. read more

We went here the first time on 5/29 and had very high expectations based on reviews and images. We had reservations at 6:30 and arrived a few minutes early which was okay as we were seated right away. The service was not good at all. It was a while before the waitress even asked if we were ready to order. We did tell her right away that we would start with the chicken poppers, which they were probably the best thing we had. We then had to wait and wait for her to come Back and see if we were ready to order.... Got a Caesar salad which we split- not a fan very salty and to much anchiovy taste for my liking. Then wait began for our entrees-- remind you we got there around 6:20. Finally a little before 8 our entrees appeared. I had the prime rib, mashed potatoes. Hubby had the filet. He said his was good, Prime rib was more on the rare side instead of med rare and not real hot, potatoes were just barely warm. Did not send back or complain as we didn't know when we get them back... We sat and waited for our dinner as we watched others come in after us and order and eat and leave while we still waited. I know things happen, but just at least let us know what the hold up is or at least apologize for the delay. Really 2 hours from the time we got there until we left and a lot of that time was just waiting on service and food. Ambiance- nice place, but with it being the open concept it was nosy and also we about froze while we were sitting and waiting. First of all, the name "Airline chicken" may be difficult for some to risk ordering since they probably have bad memories from eating a chicken dinner on a flight back when airlines offered food service. However, one of our party ordered the "Airline chicken" and could not stop raving about how delicious it was. So, unless your heart is totally set on steak or prime rib, you should certainly try the "Airline chicken." The steaks were delicious, the prime rib sandwich fell slightly short of expectations.
