Really wanted to like this place. Ordered the kraut plate. Schnitzel was tough and room temperature. The 2 sausages were so tough, I could barely cut them with a knife. Sauerkraut was great but also room temp. The potato salad was way too sweet and again room temp. The red cabbage was cloyingly sweet. Ordered the peach bread pudding and it's tasted good it was ice cold. Got it to go, and I can heat it up and hope to salvage something of the meal. The peach sangria was good. Order the sausage platter and spouse order the feta chicken wrap. The beef sausage was tough, even with the cut marks on it, hard to cut into and very chewy! I cannot comment on the German food but we had dinner here last night and we both enjoyed our food. We had two of their specials, a 14 oz pork chop with a delicious cherry jalapeño sauce, and the blackened mahi mahi. Both were really delicious. Amazing food, service, and atmosphere! My wife and I shared the Texas Country Ribeye and German Sampler. I've had a lot of Ribeyes, but this one takes the cake with its sautéed jalapeño mushroom reduction lightly glazed over it. Wursts and the Jaeger Schnitzel were perfect. Salads were fresh, crispy and the perfect portion. This place is a hidden away gem. Our Uber driver was from the area and he didn't even know about it, so I was a little worried before we arrived, but we weren't disappointed at all and left with 5-Star dining experience! Went here for lunch today with the family. Kinda cool that you actually have to go downtown stairs into a cellar like the German name means "Rathskellar". The menu was more than just German food but it was the reason I came. I got the Jaeger Schnitzel and my wife and son shared the German sampler. This is cool place located in the basement of an old animal hospital. Wifey had the chicken vegetable soup which she said was good. She then had the beef dip sandwich whis she said was very good. I was really looking forward to my German food. I grew up eating this type of European food and I have to tell you this was not a good example of German food. I ordered the sampler plate which had Jaeger schnitzel, bratwurst, knockwurst, red cabbage, sauerkraut and German potato salad. I was stunned that everything was bland. The gravy on the schnitzel was lame for lack of a better way to explain it. How can sausage be bland? It was first for me. The sauerkraut and potato salad had a wierd after taste to them. To top it off hours later it made me produce a gas so noxious that I am convinced if it could harnessed it could be weaponized. What a fantastic little restaurant at the basement of an old hospital on main Street. The food was exceptional, the German sampler platter was perfect and I love their red cabbage the perfect balance of sweet and sour with a beautiful taste of clove. If you like the more open look and like to be able to observe the kitchen working, stay in the front section. We've eaten at Rathskeller's twice in the last year, so this review cover both meals. Son says that the special, Rosemary chicken Ravioli in Basil Sauce, is so good that it's the best meal ever eaten in Fredericksburg over all of our visits. 11/2014 French fries are seasoned just right and are very good. The house specials sounded interesting but I had planned to try the Jaeger Schnitzel. Had the house salad first which was piled high with the freshest of greens, cheese and a slice of tomato. It was very good. The Jaeger Schnitzel was promptly prepared and served hot. It was well proportioned and delicious covered in a rich mushroom gravy. The red cabbage was tart and sweet as you would expect and the hot German potato salad was good too. The service was prompt and excellent. Small place that happened to be one of only a couple German places open on Valentines Day in Fredericksburg. Service was quick and super-friendly and place had a neat vibe, leaning toward bar, but a nice selection of food items. I got some sort of sampler with wurst and jaeger schnitzel. We stopped at Rathskeller based on a recommendation by a local. The fact that the restaurant is housed in the basement of an old 1800's hospital and heard raves about the breakfast we decided to give a try. It wasn't the ambiance I was expecting and we missed breakfast by a few minutes but decided to grab lunch here anyway. Where Rathskeller excelled at was service. We made our way back of the restaurant where we could easily have been forgotten but we were quickly greeted with waters, orders taken checked on by our waitress in a timely fashion and refills were offered a couple times. While the breakfast menu looks enticing the lunch menu not so much. I wanted something light and decided on the "chicken sandwich". Really this should be called a greek chicken pita. It is served on a small white pita cut in half with thinly sliced grilled chicken, olive tepanade, creamy hummus and feta cheese. I was happy with the sandwich and its ingredients but Jesse's order was just OK. His "smoked turkey sandwich" had thick sliced of melted cheddar cheese on thick toasted nine grain bread with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and red onion on the side. The bread, deli style turkey and Ruffles type potato chips were typical grocery store bought items and at $10 I would have expected higher quality. They do serve a decent iced tea and comes with refills. They only sell sodas in a can for $1.99 (ouch). Suggestions for improvement would be to offer other sides than chips with sandwhiches. As we were leaving I noticed a daily chalk board specials that looked pretty good, have the staff share that information with customers when seated. Some pluses, they serve $5 glasses of champagne and mimosas. Iced tea comes with free refills. read more

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I can't in good conscience recommend Rathskeller to anyone. The prices are too high for the type of food you get. If it were home cooking from scratch it would be well worth the cost, and even more! But my family was in for lunch on Saturday and was excited about what we remembered as good food from a previous trip several years ago. But it wasn't what we remembered at all. Sitting at our table, the staff didn't even try to hide the fact that much of their food is straight out of Sysco containers and just heated up. The first indication are the huge cans of ketchup that are clearly visible on the shelves in the main dining area - not even in the kitchen. I and my family witnessed a "cook" shoveling cole slaw from a Sysco container into a bin to be served. The open doors to the kitchen reveal cans and cans of stacked Sysco German potato salad that just need to be heated. This is the same German potato salad that they list as a "German Specialty." The "swiss cheese" that topped my schitzel was white American swiss cheese, not even real cheese. And the side of veggie that I ordered were still frozen in the middle. My so't bratwurst seemed to be microwaved and was so chewy he couldn't eat it. Looking around, everything was either from a mix or ready to heat and serve. The service wasn't good, either. We never got a refill of our waters. I can heat up canned food at home and skip the $70 it cost for a rather light lunch with no drinks. The food is mediocre and is way overpriced for heated up canned food. Save your money and head somewhere else. read more

We stumbled across Rathskeller when we were looking for a place to eat before leaving town. This was our first visit to Fredericksburg, and I will return to this restaurant next time we come to town. Since it's located in a basement of the former hospital, we were not sure what to expect. It is cozy inside, with a nice menu selection. I had the turkey sandwich with cheddar mashed potatoes and my wife had the wrap. Both were delicious, but the most memorable part of our meal was the salsa. As a native Texan, I have had a LOT of salsa in my lifetime, but this might have been the very best I can remember having in a restaurant. Granted, I was hungry, but it was superb, served with a generous helping of chips. Reasonably priced, good food, amazing salsa, cool experience. Don't miss it. P.S. Incidentally, there is literally only one commode inside the restaurant, for both men and women. However, there is a "secret" set of nice restrooms if you go up the back stairs and look to the left. The sampler plate was well done and the items were very good. My wife had the soup of the day and she said it was homemade and very good. We go here for Sunday brunch quite a bit when we are in town. They are always packed and there is no place to stand without being in the way of the wait staff. Of course its a catch 22 because if there was never anyone there, we would think there was something wrong with the place. The food is very tasty. Ray's favorite is the French Toast, I love the big burrito, but have tried a few things on the menu and am never disappointed. Not kid friendly especially with strollers because it is in a basement. You have to walk down steep stairs to get into the restaurant. It had terrible service and my husband and I kept having to go get things like a high chair, fork, napkins and ice water pitcher. The waiter also got my husband's order wrong but he ate it anyway.
