Great food fora good price !! Always satisfied when I leave there and at my destination to enjoy the food

Felix really knew how "COOK" ~ I've known Felix for over twenty years or so ~ He was actually cooking for this "hole in the wall" restaurant that was located a couple blocks behind CIRCUIT COURT and near the original ADVERTISER Building ~ He then relocated to start up his own restaurant in CHINATOWN directly across from the C&C Public Municipal Parking Lot ~ His "breakfast platter" was massive with generous portions of bacon, Portuguese Sausage and Eggs (anyway you like them). The KALIHI restaurant has been his base of business for years and that's where I've enjoyed many meals from breakfast, lunch and late lunches ~ "PRIME RIB" has always been the reason that myself and other coworkers have have continued to patronize his restaurant ~ His "combination entres'" just blows the competition away ( even though there are none" ~ The "LOBSTER TAILS" or "KING CRAB LEGS" were to die for combined with the "PRIME RIB" absolutely amazed me ~ BUT I have to confess I really don't know how some of his repeat customers can "afford" the price that he charges for some of his "combo~specials" ~ Anywhere from $50~ $70 dollars if you include a drink and or extra of any of the daily specials ~ My only other difficulty with eating at RAY'S CAFE is that he constantly changes his "menu items" every day ~ And calling in for a list of items on his daily menu doesn't guarantee that he and or his helper will answer the phone because they get "SLAMMED" with orders, from the sit down customers and the "TAKE OUT ORDERS" being called in ahead of time ~ AND if "PRIME RIB" and or any other "DAILY SPECIAL" from his menu is something that you have been craving it's extremely advisable that you get to the restaurant "EARLY" because he always "SELLS OUT" by 11am if not sooner ~ If you are craving a simple "Prime Rib" plate when it's on the daily menu just drop everything and make it a priority to dine in there ~ Make certain that you have the right amount of "CASH" (no credit cards transactions) for Felix's fantastic food ~ Remember it's a "HOLE IN THE WALL" atmosphere ~ No frills ~ Cloth covered tables ~ And napkins are optional if they are available ~ AND be prepared for a very "expensive bill" if you order the "Prime Rib" with any other items as a combo plate ~ I need to get to RAY'S CAFE before this year's ending just to reminisces and blow some money on the food that I have been raving about ~ Don't just take my word for it ~ Go experience it for yourself read more

More of a rant on service more than anything. Always always have a wait no matter how you order, walk in or phone order. Decided to get some prime rib for the family today for Thanksgiving lunch and this is how it went. Called in the morning to place order for a 11:45 pickup. Number given was #8, Head there and waited forever with a bunch of others waiting as well. Customer with #3 was asking about his 4, while #17 and others got their orders and were on their way. #5 and another only had 1 plate each that was ordered and was waiting. 2 customers after me ordered and received theirs items and was out. Love Ray and the food but I think they get so overwhelmed that when people walk in order and when they announce who had the 1 order xx they get it and go. Think they need the restaurant order slips that you rip the bottom section off with numbers on it. Phone order, write the order on it, and go abouts accordingly with walkins to phone then everything should be in proper waiting number. read more

For my mom's birthday my parents got take out and my mom got the prime rib and king crab, I got the prime rib and my dad got the hamachi. Parking is pretty difficult since it's on King St. so it is a lot easier with 2 people so 1 can run out and the other and drive around and come back. My mom's prime rib and king crab was $55 and the KC legs were huge! They give 1 big 1 medium and 1 small leg. The prime rib was $25 I think and it came with salad the prime rib was super tender and soft. My dad said the hamachi was good and the pieces were huge! Definitely wanna try the hamachi for myself next time! So worth the amount you get! read more

Aloha & WOW! Best cheese Burger I've had on the island!!! Quick stop before returning to the airport to return to the 9th island. Don't expect anything else with it, it comes solo. They don't have fries but they have a "todays menu" with amazing things like grilled pork chop $10 Fresh grilled mahi-mahi for $14.75, prime rib for $23. We didn't try the breakfast menu. I LOVE this place! But first a HUGE caveat, while I wholeheartedly give them 5 stars if you're looking for a "5 star restaurant" in the traditional definition this ain't it. Ray's is the quintessential "hole in the wall". In fact, and I mean no offense to Ray, it's a "shit hole in the wall", and I mean that with much love and affection. If you're visiting Hawaii there are dozens of these small cafés all across the island. Tiny small, open kitchen, maybe 6-8 tables, 60yo decor, faded hand written signs, cardboard wall patches, no a/c, and 3 to 4 dedicated employees. Half the tables are filled with locals who camp out and actually help clean up, and all the while there's a never-ending line out the door. Everyone is super friendly and loves to talk story. Going to a place like Ray's truly a cultural experience. Ok but how's the food? The food is epic. Huge portions and cheap prices. All your local favs, cutlet, oxtail, Ono and ahi, etc but Ray's signature Prime Rib is what draws the crowd! Where else can you get a 28-32oz perfectly cooked and seasoned Prime Rib for $25?!?! And when he's got you can get 2 HUGE lobster tails for another $30! Seriously everything is fantastic and Ray's an icon BUT, if you don't like waiting, want fancy, or just have a bad attitude (local or not) just stay away. I am a big fan of Rays, love the food, service and the Ray's Cafe experience. It is always a pleasure and joy to visit and try the different food options. Tonight had the NY Strip Steak, asparagus, mac salad and white rice for $15 and it was awesome. I would have ordered the prime rib if they had any left. I know the street in Kalihi looks sketchy, dark and scarey at night but get your butt inside, you are perfectly safe. You will be met like you are family. If you want to try local, Ray's Cafe is your place. Recommend call and check on the specials before you come so you know what's on the menu. If the prime rib is still on the menu, hurry over because it goes fast. read more

I've been going to Ray's since I was a kid and started at his original location in Chinatown before he moved to Kalihi. This place isn't hip or trendy, just really good food focusing on high quality meats all served in very generous portions at very reasonable prices. Their prime rib is the best I've ever had and it beats any fine dinning restaurant out there. The slice is so large, it hangs off the plate. This was my father's favorite. His fresh changes daily and are always the biggest cuts that take over the plate. My mother always loved his miso butter fish which I've never seen such large cuts like that before. For me, I enjoy his Sari Sari, which is a lechon and shrimp with vegetable Filipino soup. Again, it is a generous serving loaded with the lechon and shrimp that probably 2 could share. It comes with a side of rice as well, but you really don't need it with the size of the soup alone. Ray, the owner is a character. He's a really nice guy, but does make sure that all his dinning guests are enjoying their meals. He's the type of guy to sit at your table and shoot the breeze with you for a little bit. Parking it the biggest issue in the area. I really don't have any suggestions, but you will have to plan accordingly and will probably have to walk a bit to get their from where ever you park. Oh my, yes in Kalihi... almost wanted to change our dinner plans when we passed the doorway to find street parking. But read some fellow Elite's reviews so stayed to try it here. Was kinda scared to go in but saw people inside and also many people go to pick up take out orders. Even saw kids going in from the back door. This is the type of restaurant where your tastebuds will have to keep you focused on your plate and not the interior. Fun though cuz cash only and they have their own ATM in one corner. The lettuce was hanging out of the bowl and my well done order was dark pink but not oozing so I ate it all. It tasted like steak from my childhood. The waiter and the smiling man who collected my money were nice. I was satisfied with my meal. Hubs said he would come only if we were in the area. A liitle while later I looked at him and his face was a swollen purple so he had to leave the table in a flash. He said it wasn't the food. Hope so... Price was extremely reasonable. I'm only a big fan of Mahi Mahi in Hawaii because it's always dry when I order it here in LA. I had the best here at Ray' Cafe, a hole in the wall hidden gem in Oahu. The restaurant that day was actually full of travelers from LA enjoying their meal. I can't believe how awesome the food was and even better the prices as well. I know why they stay open with these prices because everyone is happy with the food. Our bill was not even 50 bucks. Where can you get a full meal with steak and fish for that price with good quality. Come to Ray's Cafe and see Manong Felix the owner. Best Prime rib ever. It melts in your mouth and say mmmmm Mmmmm mmmmm. Only thing is the wait was too long and the parking was crowded. I parked right in front, but still had to wait almost an hour even though my mom called in our order for 3 Prime rib plates. She likes hers well done and they got our orders wrong and gave us Med rare with toss salad. It was still ok for my brother and I, but not for my mom. Hopefully next time we have a better experience when we order prime rib from here again. read more

Service is slow at morning and lunch hours since it is a small kitchen with only 5 tables. Ambiance is not great but order takeout and it is not a factor. You can't beat the price. Visited Rays from Bay Area. The vibe is super local feel. This is definitely is a neighborhood staple where locals feel more of a family feel instead of a restaurant. I don't know how it's really done. But it was $100 for 2 prime ribs, any steak, and 2 lobster tails. I got it medium rare. And I would ask for it a little less cooked. I'll try the fried chicken on my next trip, and their loco moco looked really good as well. And the Mac salad was the best here on our trip. Come to feel family vibes and real hearty meals. Had to try the prime... Okay. Well it was worth it! $18.50, had a bowl of au jus... Beautiful! And included a custard dessert. Not bad at all. Didn't have all the fancy trimmings like most places that served prime. But I'm here for the meat! Presentation didn't deviate from any of the pictures. You know. Looks good on picture, but not what is served. Gawd... What you see is what you get. I useally get rare, but being first time, I didn't know what to expect, so I went Medium. Should have gone medium rare. Meat was served MEDIUM! Well howzaboutdat! Next time I'm going for the rare. Meat was a little chewy, but I think it was because I ordered Medium. Go again? Thumbs up? I've been stalking Rays Cafe Facebook page since I got here, waiting for the Prime Rib and Lobster tail special day. I finally caught it! I called to place a takeout order, first time the phone was busy, second time too, finally got through 10 minutes later. I got downtown to pickup the order and couldn't find anywhere to park (this is becoming an unwelcome trend!) I finally parked a little way away and just walked. When I got there I saw my order on the table. A man in the kitchen said "Can I help you" and I said that was my order, he said ok...and then he walked away! There was another man taking payment so I thought he was going to come to me next, he didn't. And then I stood there, awkwardly waiting for someone to come take my money. Finally I had to call for someone. Prime rib and Lobster tail special and Prime rib regular, both medium rare, $64! I opened the box with the lobster tail and was shocked to find two tails! That's a great deal! The sides were Mac salad and rice...I was really wanting a baked potato. The Prime rib tasted so good and was a perfect medium rare, the au jus made it taste out of this world good. They didn't say how big the prime rib was but my guess is in the 16-20oz range, this was a lot of meat. I was missing the horseradish but I'll just get my own for next time. The lobster tail was delicious with a little squeeze of lemon and melted butter and it was so fresh. We will definitely get this Prime Rib again, probably some of the best I've ever had! read more

Ray's Cafe is a delightful little gem hidden away on the Main Street of Kalihi. We got the prime rib ($18.95) and the French Toast combo which came with choice of meat and two eggs. The prime rib was definitely the outshining dish as it was both big in size/portion and came with a hearty amount of ajou sauce. You can also get horseradish upon request as well! The prime rib also comes with two scoops of rice and some super creamy but flavorful Mac salad. The French toast was also quite yummy as well. read more

This was our first visit to Ray's Cafe primarily because we read that parking can be a bear. We lucked out with a space just past Ray's... The Prime Rib was all that and more, tender and juicy with just enough seasoning and the largest cap I ever saw. The Grilled Salmon also was no slouch and part of it was fallin' out of the take-out container. The place is small, in the heart of Honolulu. It's definitely this cute, personable local's hang out. I googled best restaurants near Honolulu airport and Ray's came up. It's so small, we drove past it twice. We found free street parking a couple of blocks down. The food though - SUPERB!!!! Google did not lie. I had a HUGE chunk of amazing prime rib - for just $24.95. It was honestly one of the best prime ribs I have ever had. Dinner comes with a salad and rice - TONS of food for the money. The restaurant was PACKED and the service was impeccable. You should know it's cash only before you go. But definitely a place to visit on your way to or from the airport. read more

I first enjoyed Felix's cuisine when he was in downtown Honolulu. His Prime Rib was a gastronomical delight. When he moved to Kalihi, i was able to find parking down the street and enjoyed the best grilled Ono in my life. Yesterday Sharon and I found parking and got a table after a 10 minute wait. The menu board gave so many choices, but the Oxtail Stew was my choice because a chef's expertise lies in his soups and sauces. It was 'fall off the bone' paradise, perfectlly seasoned and savory. Sharon enjoyed a great cheeseburger with bacon and ordered prime rib to go. If you wish to enjoy Ray's I suggest you take The Bus to Kaliha and get off at Guiick Ave. Go before 11:00 if you wish to dine in. Take beer or wine and make it a dining eperience. If you like your prime rib un-seasoned this is the place for you. This is literally a little hole in the wall. They don't have a service counter. The cash register is literally in the kitchen, so guest are inside The kitchen paying for and picking up their food. We heard a lot of good talk about the size and taste of the prime rib here, so we wanted to try it out. The prime rib cost $18.99 and comes with 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of Mac salad or green leaf salad. The size of the prime rib was huge, but there was no seasoning on the outside of the meat. Huge let down and disappointment. We also ordered the French toast for $5. That was a huge disappointment as well. The French toast was soggy, nothing firm about it. What? You're looking for reasons to eat here?? Just go... you will have to hunt for either street parking or that 1 stall next to the building... but Just Go! Located in Kalihi on King St. across from a Central Pacific Bank... Ray's has about 6 tables and can seat 2 to 4 on each table... place is pretty tiny and looks aren't impressive at all, BUT what comes out of this kitchen is the poster-child for gluttony... Chef Felix is a very nice and generous man, and what he creates in his kitchen is what Ray's reputation is predicated on... 'mean kine' portions with 'mean kine' flavors... with the other end of Ray's reputation... the price... very competitive with the types of dishes you can get here compared to other restaurants... you'll be asking yourself, "Why don't I just always come here?" Well, 1 is the parking can be a task, and 2 the hours... pretty much if the door is open, they're open, if not, they're closed. They are open during the day, but tend to close early evening before their posted hours due to food running out... so you wouldn't get any food anyhow... just come back the next day, earlier ;D. I'm a meat eater, and Chef Felix makes his meat dishes HUGE! Da Prime Rib is MASSIVE... just like their Rib Eye and New York cuts... MASSIVE! The size usually means MASSIVE prices too right? Wrong! Very competitive, but at limited quantities, so if you miss'um, you missed'um! Cry for a lil'bit, then just come back tomorrow! :D Their Fried Chicken is also bomb here... not Louisiana moist, but super close and a good side dish with your order if you didn't order the Fried Chicken plate.
