Once upon a time, this past winter actually, my friend and I went to happy hour at Red 36. Unfortunately, there was little happiness to be had. Our waitress was rude from the moment we sat down, and the nachos were terrible (unless you like microwaved Sargento cheese and soggy chips!). The only thing that wasn't completely wrong was the wine which came out of a sealed bottle, a bottle that they couldn't ruin, a bottle that our reluctant waitress was kind enough to pour for us. It was my second visit to this nice restaurant with a $1M view and I'm so glad I actually sat for a meal! They do not take reservations in the summer. However, they have a great outdoor patio where u can bring your drinks and enjoy the marina view. The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable!! Best meal of the summer. Happy hour oysters $1 each and clams about the same. Drink and numerous appetizers also on sale. Great view of Mystic river with outdoor seating. Went on a weekend getaway with my husband and ended up at Red36 for dinner. I had a lobster roll and my husband had fish n chips.. when in Mystic, you've got to check out this restaurant. We put our name on the waitlist on a Sunday night. We knew we'd have to wait, not a problem. My husband explained we had a baby in a stroller. They asked us not to bring the stroller. We agreed and said we'll have to bring the carrier. We waited 45 minutes, again, we anticipated this. We were brought to a small two top, no high chair or extra chair, right next to the DJ station. Why they would seat an infant right next to the DJ station is beyond me. Don't claim to be family friendly if you can't accommodate families. read more

We found Red 36 because we were looking for a down to earth, fun atmosphere, on the water , easy kind of place. once we sat in the bar, it was more awesome than we could have hoped for! The wait to be seated we were told about 40-45 minutes. The wait was shorter than that to our surprise. The food was absolutely delicious. Our waitress Haley had a bubbly personality and very nice. We are on vacation from Long Island and she was very informative on things we can do here. The view from the restaurant was spectacular. I really wanted to like this place. The place was packed so i thought it would be great. In full disclosure I sat at the bar and had a glass of wine and chowder. I was craving a cup of NE clam chowder and this was a disappointment. It was not thick and creamy like NE chowdah should be. The shrimp flatbread was my favourite, aside from the great view. The scallops and pappardelle were great, too, but too buttery. The service was 5 stars. Can't wait to come back. Went in for lunch yesterday. The greeting at the hostess station was rude. When table was called we asked to be skipped bc of where the table was and get the next table that comes up and the hostess told us she could not save a table... whatever. We ended up waiting for an outside bar seat and waited 15 minutes. It was well with the wait. The bartenders Mackenzie and I think Anna we absolutely fantastic. Food was very good. Conversation at bar with bartenders excellent. We will always sit at the bar in the future and skip the hostess station. read more

Have been here many times and brought lots of friends who have thoroughly enjoyed this place...but the other day it sank to an all time low on just one entree...the LOBSTER GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH! My sister said it didn't taste right after two small bites. So we pulled some of the lobster pieces out of the sandwich and it had a very bad chemical smell, like chlorine or bleach. I put it on the napkin and asked the waitress to smell it...she wouldn't but they made good on it with no charge and she opted for a burger instead. I have never experienced this anywhere. We had seen another diner near us with the same entree and not eating it, just picking at it. We thought that's how she stays thin! Well, they never complained about it and they left eventually, she never had more than a bite. Now we know why. So, beware. Hopefully this won't happen again. And this now on a slow winter season and not crowded. I'll keep coming back, my first complaint on the "food". You would not believe the smell, masked by the guacamole, tomato and cheese on the thick bread. Enjoyed Lunch with friends! We started with the Thai Peanut Calamari (soo good) Then we had a Burger, Chicken Flatbread, Fish & Chips and a Tuna Wrap...great service, food, views as always.....Have been there at least 5 times the last year. Will continue to go and bring friends. Everyone loves the place. BUT...... this is so petty on their part, but thought you should know. My friend asked the waitress if instead of fries with the tuna wrap can she get something else? Waitress said sure! Cole Slaw? So my friend said yes. When the bill came there was a $4 additional charge for the slaw. We questioned it and the waitress said, I'll ask the manager if they can take it off, being I never mentioned this to you. Came back and said NO. It costs them to do that. ?? But the fries were so much more I'm sure than a side of Cole slaw. They didn't budge. THESE are the things that can keep me from returning. We dine out 6 days a week and I mean, COME ON!! That's my story. So beware of something like that. And was not worth the $4...see the picture! I don't get it?? Not customer friendly. Yesterday, 8/11.... We hear different stories from waitresses, mgr. & owner re: extra charges for beverages/ side dishes. Waitress says no charge on Soda or iced tea. we were charged for the additional sodas. Asked why when she just told me, she had no real reason. A month ago the owner wanted to know why I went on Yelp complaining...my wife said you weren't clear. So my wife has lunch with 5 friends, owner talked down to her, not nice and they were charged again after the owner said, we won't charge you next time. Well, went there yesterday, the owner was out, s/w the mgr. and she said there IS a charge. They had a meeting over it. Beware, so strange. read more

The three is for the view, drinks, and service. The food is subpar unfortunately. I really want to like it cause the staff is so great there. The lobster tastes frozen. This is our go-to restaurant in Mystic. We came for lunch midweek and they were about 2/3 full for the indoor seating so we got a table right away. They have beautiful outdoor seating overlooking the marina but it's still a bit cold for that. Everything on the menu is good! We usually enjoy some raw bar items to start and then I fight the urge to get their hot buttered lobster roll. Today I branched out and got the cod sandwich with a Red 36 salad, amazing! They get real busy on summer weekend nights but if its under an hour it's well worth the wait. Easier to get a table during prime time if you come early, especially if you have a preference for outside seating. read more

Better for the mystic area. The oysters, steamers and cocktail shrimp tasted fresh. However, the salmon with chips tasted processed and were over salted. With that being said, aside from seafood, the flatbread grilled chicken dish was respectable and something I would order again. Style of the restaurant was causal nautical, seating was somewhat close but understandable for the demand of the area. A little difficult to find but well worth the effort to explore its location next to a slip, offering casual outdoor dining and spectacular views. No reservations taken and seating is first come first serve so don't bother to call, just go! Seated after a short 15 min wait with 2 ravenous small grand children (me included), their Macaroni and Cheese ($12) was the best I have ever tasted at a restaurant. Our waitress told us that it was the same they use when made with lobster on the menu. Offering tiered levels of fresh clams, oysters and shrimp ranging in quantity , our platter was exceptionally fresh as one would anticipate. The lobster roll was packed, fried brussel sprouts gently browned with hints of balsamic and seafood paella aromatically seasoned with saffron rice was exceptional. Friendly and attentive service despite it being very busy with a DJ keeping the momentum of the evening. If you want to have a fun experience with great local seafood, this is the spot! read more

Had a wonderful lunch here and drinks. Ordered the special appetizer: fries green tomatoes, remoulade sauce, and shrimp. It was delicious and a nice summer treat. For drinks we ordered a grapefruit sizzler and a ginger whiskey martini. Very refreshing and tasty. For lunch we had cream of artichoke and vidalia onion soup which was delicious and creamy; and an ahi tuna burger which was once of the best I've ever had. The burger had a wasabi soy sauce on it with avocado and coleslaw. The tuna, which I asked to be cooked rare, was perfect and very fresh. Everything was delicious. Celebrated a friend's birthday Saturday night. The ambiance and service was fantastic. However, a couple of us order the ribeye special. Very disappointed. It should been a red flag when we had to ask for different knives just to slice the steak. After trying two different knives, we were given a pairing knife from the kitchen. Had lunch outside after a day in mystic. We had betidas - creamy, lime drink that was delicious. I also had the lobster grilled cheese that I would highly recommend. My family got lobster rolls and scallops which they also said were delicious. I believe each entree was around $25 so not bad for seafood with a view. Plan on coming back! read more

This was our first time in Mystic and we kept getting recommended to go to Red 36, we were not disappointed! There was about an hour wait outside, but we were able to order drinks and enjoy the water. We LOVED the vibe inside, you can see the boats from any seat in the dining room. Our server, Chris, was excellent and attentive, despite it being a busy night. We had salmon, mussels, and lobster carbonara and everything was amazing!! Excellent location, just beautiful. I loved the decor and feel of the place, it's open and airy. The Calamari was excellent but was a very small portion for the price, four of us split two orders at a few bites each. We had just the two calamari and one drink each the the bill was $85 dollars! The prices are just way too high, even if they just came down a couple of dollars it would be a bit better, $11 for a mixed drink is ridiculous. I honestly won't be going back, it's not worth the money for the tiny portions and mediocre mixed drinks. read more

Bad acoustics and it took 20 minutes from being seated to a server even looking our way. Out of 3 courses and just slapped a sheet with specials on table, server lacked professionalism and seemed very rushed. The food was delivered very fast after order was placed so fast in fact that you couldn't finish your appetizer before the main course was served. My wife had to ask for her wine twice before being served it (he then gave a generous serving of wine to make up for it). The deserts where served at two different times as was the main courses. Seemed like it was delivered as it was finished rather than serving the whole table at the same time. My take is that red rather be a bar than a Resturant as patio doors was left open by the "bar scene" causing a draft for diner guest. This place is in a great spot for view of the yachts and sailboats pulling in and out of the marina. Unique seating, from couches, picnic tables, high tops. The parking lot is huge and on a dirt road, so you don't have to park in Mystic and walk like others have done. It gets pretty busy on the weekends so expect a wait and bring sunglasses. The food is pretty good, but sometimes you'll be waiting a while for it to come out. The swordfish is the best I've had in the area. read more

Well, we gave it a 3rd time as we couldn't get in anywhere else and we hoped things had improved in year two. Wait times were once again forever, my tuna was served iced cold and the "kids" meals were a joke. They don't have a kids menu but the waitress Katie described it as something they just don't advertise but they do offer true kid meals. I guess $11 for pasta with butter sauce that doesn't include a drink is okay for them. Also no word was given that sodas aren't refills and I only found out after I saw the bill. Who takes a drink order from an 8 year old and doesn't tell the parent that it's not a free refill like it is at 95% of other restaurants. Communication would be nice! I asked the waitress about it and all she could do was stammer and she was sorry for no adjustment. We then asked for a manager on the way out and was told they have 3 or 4 but none were available that day (mind you on a Saturday afternoon on a gorgeous July afternoon - QUESTIONABLE! I've written 3 bad reviews in my life and 2 are at this place. Disappointed to say the least and won't be back!!! read more

The restaurant was so dark, we couldn't read the menus without holding them up against the candle. It was super loud, with patrons shrieks, competing with the barely audible background music. Service was slow and hapless. Took a while for the waitress to come by for our drink/appetizer order. The appetizer came out a while before the drinks. Just left this place. My two friends and I sat down in the adirondack chairs out back as we were told it was seat yourself and full service there. We sat there for about ten minutes before someone came over and poured us waters but didn't even say one word to us. Not even a casual hello. About another 10-15 minutes later we noticed groups that came in after us already had drinks and food. We asked a server if someone was coming to our table and she said she would send someone over. Nope. Waited another 10 minutes and at that point we just decided to leave. Meanwhile, myself and my friends don't look like the typical Mystic, boat shoe wearing, yacht driving crew.
