Wish we had come here our first day and not our last two days visiting Monterey. Was so tired of the overpriced, underwheming tourist food. Decided to follow yelp and a short short drive to this amazing place! Went for dinner, mid week, no wait. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is inside a red house (thus the name). Super welcoming staff. We.ordered the crab cakes (two huge, delicious crab cakes), the lamp chops (cooked perfectly) and the salmon (also amazing). We split one of the best chocolate cake slices for dessert. So good! Next day we decided to come back for breakfast. I had the Crab cake eggs Benedict. Seriously the best breakfast ever. Those same amazing crab cakes with two perfectly poached eggs on a sliced croissant with Benedict sauce and incredible roasted potatoes. I added avocado to mine and it was simply heaven. I ordered online this time because I was craving some late night pizza. They have nondairy/VEGAN options which is my main criteria for any pizza place and they have quite a few. They've got a lot of options of pizza and pasta that it's a lil overwhelming but also very grateful to have choices. I was in a rush and ordered myself their basic vegan pizza (forget the name) and their vegan mac n cheese. I feel like Mac is difficult to pull off, especially vegan Mac. And well, I was right. Personally I didn't vibe with my order as much as Ive vibed to others. I'd rather eat at the location (which I've done in the past precovid) than order delivery. So misleading pricing -- it is much higher than what is listed, including paper napkins, table mats. And remember to pay that extra charge for using your credit card! Food was very underwhelming and overpriced. My pancake was burnt underneath and had a bitter taste and were rubbery and hard to cut into. the bacon did not taste good at all - had a weird taste I can't describe. The presentation for the mocha was cute but lacking in taste, would've been nicer in a cute big mug as I felt I was drinking from a bowl with no handle and it was expensive. Eggs were runny. We were not even given condiments such as ketchup salt and pepper unless we asked and since we were on the patio it would take a while to get to us and the food was cold by that time. We sat on the patio, no one came out to help or seat us and we even opened our own patio umbrellas since the sun was beating down on us. We sat there and wasted a lot of time after eating since no one was bringing the bill out and when they took it in I took forever to bring it out. My wife and I stopped by here before heading back to Long Beach, this restaurant was recommended by one of our friends and wow, customer service was sooooo great, they literally had you feeling as if you walked into a family members home. Food was outstanding! We arrived during lunch time and had a BLT and also a Turkey sandwich with their homemade honey mustard which was absolutely delicious. The food here is marvelous. The service is not. There is a lack of personality and just The X Factor amongst all the waiter staff. We were also overcharged on our bill here and I had to flag down the waiter to correct the bill. He obliged and said it was a problem with something or other I can't remember. We also went in here one time on a non-busy evening and literally waited 10 minutes before a waiter approached our table, as if we were invisible. Something out of the twilight zone. Prices have also increased while food quantity slightly decreased with some items. Personally, I am always irked by this. With the food being as incredible as it is, we do not find ourselves patronizing the red house Café that much due to the other factors not being present. It is unfortunate. Always my go to for Crab Cake Benedict's. Sad to see they no longer carry the brown sugar cubes for my favorite coffee. Love to sit next to their cozy fireplace next to the window. Perfect spot to catch all the plates that make their way to out. You can never go wrong with picking something off their menu. This place is very nice; the food, the ambiance, the friendly servers. My quiche and potatoes were lovely. It was quite busy during Car Week and by the time we wanted our check to leave our server said the tab " hadn't come out yet" so he couldn't get it. Other customers around us were getting their tabs and leaving! We sat there another 15 minutes then my husband said " we're leaving". That brought the tab! It shouldn't take a 20 + minute wait to get the bill. Other than that it was fine. My Pebble Beach friend said they never change the menu so she doesn't come here any more. The food was great in quality, freshness and taste. The service was also great, the staff were friendly and respectful. However the ambiance could have been better. What do I mean by better ambiance? We were seated within like 3 feet of the restroom! Usually restrooms are either in a separate hallway or covered by a movable wall or curtain. I noticed there were at least 3 tables within 5 feet of the restrooms and that is really unappetizing. I suggest owners/managers look into some movable wall to cover the restrooms or just rearrange the tables. People come Monterey to enjoy the beautiful scenery and a restroom view is the last thing one would like to be seated next to. read more

Red House is very popular and quaint. Outdoor dining is pleasant if not too windy, and you have a heater. Brunch is especially popular so the wait time of 25 minutes was reasonable. However; we went across the street for coffee as there is no place to sit and wait, and we miscalculated the wait time so missed our name being called. So we waited a bit longer but it was no fault of the restaurant. We requested a heater, and the bus person thankfully persevered as it took a while to light, and he finally got one that would stay lit. We appreciated his hard work. Our server, Molly was pleasant and welcoming. The service overall was excellent. The menu is quite varied, and I thought the Country Breakfast looked hearty with lots of choices. I went with eggs over medium (served perfectly), bacon (thick and flavorful) potatoes (crispy and tasty). Other choices include chicken apple sausage, or ham, and one can substitute 1 pancake for toast and potatoes. The brioche toast came sans the roasted red peppers and chives so.... Not Brioche. I knew something was missing but couldn't recall so I did not send the meal back. I also was hungry and had waited for seating and serving so I let it go. My husband ordered the smoked salmon over a potato pancake with avocado (Extra at $3.00) a bit steep. As Trader Joe's has 4 avocados for $3.00. But this is Red House not Traders. My husband reported the salmon very flavourful, with a nice smoke, and the pancake much like a hash brown. Overall pleased with his choice. Our daughter ordered the salmon benedict with a nice hollandaise which she also liked. Not my first visit to this local favorite, and it won't be my last. I'll just pay closer attention to what the menu describes when I visit as I would like to be able to rate this establishment with a 5 Star next time I come to sample. read more

We were looking for a dinner spot after exploring Monterey's lovers point. So glad we came across this quaint red house. We were evaluating resto options and my daughter picked Red House Cafe because of its color and charm. She picked well because our experience was lovely! As you walk in the resto, you will have a glimpse of their kitchen and a working fireplace that warms up the cozy dining area. The whole restaurant feels like someone's home. So adorable! The food was great -- we had the seafood pasta, fish special, and the calamari...all were great! Calamari was my favorite -- big size portion for an app. The desserts are a must have. They make their pies and cookies from scratch so we had a to try a couple - apple, blackberry, and oatmeal apricot. They were fresh, filled with real fruit, and not that sweet. Even the hot cocoa is made from scratch-- it's massive, literally served in a bowl! The staff were friendly and attentive. The only downside was their POS system broke when we went there so they were only taking cash. Good thing there was a gas station across the street that has an ATM. Smelling the food and seeing the pies were enough motivation for us to get cash and come back! That's how great it is! read more

This spot is going to be one of my go-tos from now on! I will say that it was a bit confusing in the beginning, for when I walked up, there were a bunch of people standing around looking a little lost without a host in sight. Plus, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt here because they do have "Help Wanted - Host Needed" signs up on their windows, so they're obviously trying to get one and know one is needed. We were seated on the patio just outside the door of the restaurant which I think was perfect, but the inside looked quite cozy with a fireplace to add to the ambiance. Everything was very clean and all staff members met COVID requirements, and were both attentive and friendly. On to the food, it was delicious. My husband got the ham benedict and I got the smoked salmon benedict, and then we ordered the breakfast crostini to share. Everything was so tasty! Ordered a few things and shared with my family. Eggs were slimy. Bread was basic. Jelly in package. Caesar dressing was watery, couldn't even eat it. French toast was really good, but I'm a sucker for actual brioche. I didn't even use the syrup... disappointed you have to pay more for "better" syrup, you'd think they'd always want to represent the best. Potatoes were ok. Benedict was good. Service was amazing. We got here at 9:30 on Sunday and there was no line so we were seated right away. We were seated inside, it's very small but has a cozy vibe. Service was great.
