We used to go to the Red Mill a lot before the pandemic. Haven't been in a while so we had our usual expectations this past weekend. I was so disappointed. The burger had shrunk to the size of a bar drink coaster -- round, not very thick, and cardboard. The toppings were good but there wasn't much burger to top. Drove by Friday and saw lots of people there in line and people outside eating, so it's a date saturday , I'm going to get a red mill. First mistake on Saturday I call and said I list to order 2 burgers , i gave the person the information, they reply we do only online orders. Next , the last mistake I ask a question what about if I walk up to the window, she said, inky order online , no walk up, no nothing. The burgers are good for the most part .. when I have been able to have one, anyway. Even with all of the different food delivery services that are currently available, they don't deliver. If you're using a wheelchair, forget about it - the place is too small and hard to get around in, and the staff certainly aren't going to move a muscle to help you. So - I'll pass .. I can get burgers that are just as good or better, cheaper, and delivered to me so I don't have to deal with such a tiny shop. read more

I'm not seeing what the hype was about this spot? It's almost like Rain City Burgers but not as great and here's the reason based on my experience. The burger was great, patty ok, I liked how they sautéed the onion in the Verde burger which is what I got. To much lettuce over powered the burger. The onion rings was messy, barely held together. They charge extra for everything with a small drink so tiny you could gulp in one sip. The meal was overly priced. Three stars was for great location next to Starbucks, a parking lot and plenty of parking on the streets easy to find. Clean and well "planet" friendly with the recycling. The tables could of used cleaning but nothing like a clean napkin to wipe the tables down. It was pretty packed for a small burger spot but it was meh average. Would I come again? That stack of bacon on the grill behind the register is really the draw of this joint, but I guess a burger or 2 will do. I came here a little while back to see if their burgers were really as good as people say. I hiked a couple blocks from Greenlake with my friends, so we were famished when arriving. There was quite the line when we arrived, so it took a little bit of time to get our food. I got the Red Mill Deluxe, and loved every bit of it! I wish I ordered bacon and more bacon on it, but a solid burger nonetheless. Definitely satisfied our hunger! I've been wanting to try a burger from this landmark of a burger place for a long time after watching numerous food network shows highlight it's "delicious " burgers for years. Well today was my lucky day as my family decided to go to the woodland park zoo and after a few hours viewing the zoos animals as we headed for home our route took is by the restaurant. The restaurant is an older building but well maintained smallish but it's staffed by a well seasoned staff. The menu isn't large burgers and chicken and few other items, grilled cheese, but the burger I had was one of the best in a looong time. It brought back memories of when I was a kid this is how hamburgers are supposed to be made with good quality beef, the bacon helps season the grill and adds flavor. The mill sauce is a subtle umami component that ties all of the rest of the add on fixings, lettuce, tomato cheese and whatever else you decide to have on your hamburger. Their French fries are also top notch I had mine with home made tarter sauce which was also nice to be able to enjoy! I'm already scheming on ways that will allow me to return a soon as possible this place is the real deal I can see why it's gotten attention from national tv shows. read more

I knew I had to come to Red Mill on my most recent trip to Seattle, and after a bit of exploring in Ballard, my friends and I actually accidentally ran into the intersection where Red Mill happened to be. I was told that Red Mill was a Seattle institution, and that it was a must-try. We actually had late night dinner plans at 9pm, but at around 5:30pm, we decided it wouldn't be terrible if we split a few onion rings and maybe a burger. I was on vacation and had already worked out earlier in the day, so I gladly obliged. We set up shop at one of the outdoor picnic tables after a bit of scouting, which was great because the weather was perfect. There's also a few booths and tables inside, but if it's nice enough weather, I would definitely recommend sitting outside. I ended up splitting the bacon deluxe and order of onion rings. The burger was pretty good with the mill sauce, although I think the real kicker was the thick-cut peppery bacon. I also really appreciated the enormous pile of bacon on the stovetop, which really was a wonder to behold. Basically, the huge pile of cooked bacon is just kept warm on the stovetop, and whenever a burger needs bacon, they just go to the bacon pile and grab a heap of it. The onion rings were very good too, covered in a cracker-crumble crust, and had a bit of sweetness to them. Prices were pretty average, and the service was pretty quick and friendly. It's still very much fast food, but the ingredients are obviously a bit better. Definitely a step above Dick's, at only a slightly higher price. I was told the shakes were also pretty good, but given that we were still going to eat in a few hours, I declined to get one. Maybe next time. I really liked Red Mill. It's not necessarily something I would come out of my way for, but it was definitely a solid, quality burger, with some quality sides to go along with it. Their strawberry milkshakes are my favorite and honestly one of the best I've ever had. There are pieces of strawberries mixed in and they are so good. Red Mill Burgers are for those who prefer what goes on top of the pattie over the quality of the pattie. What I Sampled: Verde Burger: Fire Roasted Anaheim Peppers, Jack Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion and Mill Sauce. Bleu Cheese N' Bacon Burger: Crumbled Bleu Cheese, Pepper Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Mill Sauce on a Kaiser Bun. Onion Rings After sampling both burgers, all that stood out was the sauce. The Mill Sauce and Toppings are what make the burger. As for the patty itself, not so much. The burger patties are similar to the ones you get at a fast food joint. Nothing special about it. Some seriously, delicious, comfort food here. Definitely one of the best places to get onion rings. Before you read any further, this place takes cash or check only so fill up your wallets if you're planning on stepping by. The place is located in Phinny Ridge up on 65th street, passed the woodland park zoo by just a few blocks. You can't miss the building, it's called Red Mill for a reason and the building is very red. It's also part of a joined building with Starbucks so if you have a good eye for those, you'll easily spot Red Mill. The place itself is quite small, with limited bar seating, outdoor seating and indoor seating. If you're going on a weekend for lunch like I did, there's going to be a line. Thankfully it doesn't take very long to get through! My partner got the deluxe double bacon burger with cheese and I decided to go with the verde chicken sandwich. If you love your beef then this place will offer you nice grilled, tender, juicy beef. The Red Mill sauce is to die for. It seriously makes the entire burger messy, but so good. Bacon was crispy and cheese gooey - good burger. The chicken on the other hand, was the best chicken burger alternative I've tasted. I remember going to an amusement park and getting a grilled chicken sandwich and it was pitiful. Red Mill brought back hope for me. The chicken is tender and juicy, definitely not dry. It's grilled to perfect and so easy to bite into. The peppers are perfect and add this extra unique element that you won't find in your typical burger. The veggies are super fresh. I loved the freshness of the tomato slices and the beautiful green colored lettuce leaves. The bun does start to get slightly soggy as it soaks up all the sauce and juices, but hopefully you're gobbling it down fast enough before the bun becomes a full sponge. The fries are good, better than fast food joints but definitely average in terms of restaurant quality. Still, who can pass up fries? The onion rings are the show stopper though. They are big, thick pieces of onions that are surrounded by an amazing, crisp breaking. Literally, the breading was not falling off and these were the most crisp onion rings I've ever had. Furthermore, it was not dripping in oil, and each bite didn't send a wave of bursting oil either. I dipped mine in the tartar sauce (extra 23 cents) which was homemade and delicious as well. Everyone gets a shake here because each meal should have something a little sweet and naughty. These shakes are thick! Just how they should be. We got a chocolate chip mint shake to share and it was like thick, pure ice cream almost. The only downside to this shake was that the pieces of chocolate chip were bigger than the straw so it would clog it from time to time. But overall, so good! Price wise, it's more than a fast food chain but less than a restaurant. The burgers range from around $4-8, the shakes at $4, and the sides around $3. Between the two of us, one burger each, a side of fries and onion rings, and a shake to share was plenty of food. The total was a little less than $30. Since so many people love this place, seating is scarce and it can take sometime before seating opens. This burger joint is cash only! They don't have an ATM at the restaurant so you have to go across the street to El Chupacabra in order to get cash or some other place so it is a hassle. Be prepared and bring cash! However if you don't that is ok because the burgers are so worth it! After getting some cash from the ATM I went ahead and ordered their burger with Anaheim Chiles in it. I believe it was called the Verde Burger? Anyway the burger was delicious! It was flavorful and very, very fresh tasting! I devoured it! The fries are good and add some vinegar to them and it's a marvelous combination! The girl taking our order provided some of the worst service I've experienced in a long time. She didn't acknowledge us to take our order, and had a disgusted look on her face. I asked her what kind of root beer they had and she responded "Barq's or whatever" in a bratty tone - nope, not kidding, that's the exact quote. She was super unpleasant and also seemed upset at me for not giving her my name without her asking. This is turning out to be a theme in my burger reviews (see Surfrider Cafe) but turns out next thing I know, she's hanging out with her boyfriend in the window for a kiss on the cheek, etc. (I uploaded a pic in the gallery, seriously check it out. But in all honesty, I love Red Mill, and I have been coming here since a grad student 20 years ago. My standard is the Bacon Deluxe with cheese. Love the peppery bacon and Red Mill sauce. The onion rings are also awesome with the cornmeal and slightly spicy coating. Since day one, this is a cash only establishment so come prepared. But now with 3 locations, it's a little easier to visit these days. So is it the best burger in town? That;'s a tricky question to answer, and I have had some better burgers, albeit at double or triple the price. But for a great burger around $5, this is hard to beat! read more

I've been meaning to go here for two years now ever since I saw it on TV and read all the reviews but somehow it always slipped through. Finally went here for lunch yesterday. I was pretty underwhelmed. I got the Bacon Deluxe. It was a good burger but not something that wowed me or blew my mind like I expected it to. It was better than most fast food chains but definitely nowhere close to some other great burgers in the city. My wife got the Verde Chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly but again, the burger was above average but not amazingly impressive. The chocolate milkshake was meh and the onion rings were really disappointing. I had heard so much about them but they were just greasy and bland. Overall it's an expensive place that only accepts cash. On any day other then Monday (closed), it's the best burger in Seattle. The gap may have closed when Five Guys moved into Washington, but Red Mill still reigns supreme in my eyes. Food & Drink: Hamburgers: If you're looking for something other than this, you're in the wrong place! You can't go wrong with any of the burgers here, they are all wonderfully balanced, and the toasted buns and light sauce compliment everything else extremely well. While you won't have a plethora of exotic burger options (like at a Blazing Onion) you'll have variation--you can go chicken burger or vege-burger. There are different kinds of cheeses (even blue cheese), so there's plenty to experiment with here. If you're looking for my recommendation, then it's Bacon-Deluxe Cheese (no modifications). The bacon is going to give your burger a peppery blast tempered by the vegetables. When you combine with the sauce and toasted bun is, one of the best balanced burgers out there in terms of: Taste Texture Look If you like your beef add the extra patty. I don't like mine meat heavy, but I know many out there do (if you're the type that orders double-stacked typed burgers go this option). My second favorite option here would be the Verde Burger--if you're not a bacon person, give that one a look. The onion rings and fries do not live up the burgers (or the shakes), and I usually forgo picking them up as a side. That said, they rate as average, and won't degrade from the experience. The shakes here are very good (hand-dipped) and you'll find a lot of differing flavors. While I'm an Oreo guy through-and-through, if you like unique flavors, Red Mill has you covered: Boysenberry, Strawberry, Banana, Pineapple, Peach, Mocha, Coffee, Truffle Mint, Mandarin Chocolate, Chocolate, Vanilla, Butterscotch, Root Beer, Creamsicle, Peanut Butter, & Chocolate Chip Mint. Pricing is very reasonable, you can get out of there with a burger, drink and fries for under $10.00, though you've got to remember to bring cash. Ambiance & Service: There's not much to speak of in the way of ambiance. The place is incredibly small and crammed so it's likely you won't find a spot to sit. If you do it'll be at a rickety table with minimal room. On days where the weather is good you can sit outside, but being on the top of a ridge you're going to get some wind. Service wise, you're likely to wait in line for a while--during the summer at busy times it can snake out the door. Once you order you'll hear your number called. There's not much service to speak of . Please note that Red Mill Hamburger doesn't appreciate cell phones--no talking on them while you're in the restaurant. Final Thoughts: This is a tough place to rate--the menu is limited, and the ambiance and service is non-existent.
