This out of the way road side restaurant is a place to stop if your driving by or live local. Make sure you listen to the specials. The menu is something you would find in a big city and the beer and wine specializes in local crafts. You won't be sorry with the decision to try this place. Great food and great prices! The local owners are doing a fabulous job. The decor of the dining room is simple and comfy, with some simple black and white photography. The bar is small, so I have only been there to pick up takeout. With that said, their burgers are great, even for takeout! I would recommended them. Phenomenal!!! My husband and I are huge fans of the Phantom Gourmet and after seeing a segment on the Red Rock, we had to go. Today, I had the Sunday brunch "Out of the Box" special. Scrambled eggs with spinach, cheddar cheese and sausage over perfectly cooked polenta, topped with Hollandaise sauce. Also served with Potatoes, Poppyseed bread and a slice of cantaloupe. My husband had Eggs Benedict that was served on bread rather than a English muffin. To drink, I had a Kinky Mimosa. This was by far was the best brunch we've ever had. The menu has many different items that you won't find on any other brunch menus. The atmosphere is quaint and the service, exceptional. This restaurant is far beyond a five star restaurant. They don't call it the Red Rock for nothing, they "ROCK" big time. We have been their several times for dinner and we just keep going back. We decided to give the brunch a shot and are glad we did. We highly recommend the Red Rock, at least give it one shot. I guarantee you will go back just to try some of the "different" menu items. Our rating, 10 star if there was one! read more

Regarding the menu - I give them credit for trying to be more original than the majority of establishments in the area which are either predictable pub grub or chain restaurants. The quality is okay but nothing to write home about or rush back there to experience. But the service - OUCH! To the older hostess with blond hair (who may be co-owner) -- you spoke aggressively to the group checking in who were in front of us; you greeted us with a scowl right off the bat and treated us like massive annoyances and became strangely argumentative when we asked if we could be seated outside. This is clearly not a wise career choice for you. Your stress and anger permeates throughout. We will not return. read more

Went for lunch on a Tuesday - had the Brie appetizer, buffalo chicken wrap special & Tuna salad. Salad was unevenly dressed, tuna was over-cooked, sandwich (my husband's) was good, fries were great (sweet potato)- the star was the Brie app w/ pears, cooked down with yummy spices & warm. The Red Rock has brough some flair to the town of Upton. The menu is mostly pub-style food, but the specials that the chef creates are fantastic. He comes up with many different combinations of items that I would probably not do in my own kitchen. The price is moderately-low and the service is very good as you are always greeted with a smile. This place is amazing! The food and beer selection are both great here and get better every season. The dinner specials are always top notch, the ingredients to the meals are healthy and local, the cocktail specials are creative and tasty, and the Sunday brunch is absolutely the best around. They have a large, beautifully managed garden out back where they grow many of their own vegetables, a volleyball court filled w sand, kayak rentals for Wildwood Lake, an attached sandwich shoppe (Good 2 Go) with homemade ice cream, live music some nights, and a patio outback for dinner under the stars. We had brunch today as a party of 10 . We were received by a wonderful Host who promptly seated us. I did call ahead to let them know we were coming at 10:30. Te server was amazing ! He had coffees and waters on the table within 5 minutes! As my husband and I are very regular customers, we have been telling our friends how wonderful the food and service is! Upscale pub food in a charming little spot right off of rt 140...Red Rock is one of those places that you can get great food...and sometimes can really miss the mark. What I can say is that I've always had good service there, and we've gotten some very good food. However we've also gotten some pretty awful fish and some brisket that was 3/4 fat...some of the pricing on the items is a little suspect also. Its definitely a place worth trying out if you're passing by, especially when the patio is open in warmer weather. read more

Love this place - great atmosphere, staff works so hard, and they take reservations! Brunch is an experience with fun mimosas and make your own Bloody Mary bar. I've never had a better omelet! I love the pot roast but don't expect your mother's recipe - Red Rock's has a kick. I usually only order a burger for take-out - they're so juicy I'm embarrassed to eat one in public. First time and we will be back! Our waiter Mike was as good as it gets, very friendly, informative, just fantastic at his job. We had the pot pie spring rolls and the brie to start, all very fresh and quick to come out of the kitchen. Dinner was served just as quickly, and our whole table was happy. I took Mike's suggestion and had the pot roast (not my normal choice on a menu) , outstanding!! Finished it all off with the special blackberry and white chocolate bread pudding, again outstanding! I'm giving this place 4 stars for what it is -- a solid, mid-range restaurant (pricewise), with a great waitstaff, solid food, varied but not over the top menu, and a nice casual ambience that's good for families. I have found these things difficult to find within a half hour drive of where we recently moved -- Hopkinton -- which is a beautiful place but kind of a dead zone for a lot of things including restaurants (shortly after we arrived, I amused my wife by showing her a map of local restaurants on yelp -- there's a solid belt amounting to 10-15 minutes of driving around us composed exclusively of residential and state parks). Red Rock -- about 20 minutes away, just north of the Upton town center, which for us is "close" was recommended to us by friends as a good place to take family. Like most restaurants in MA for a family from Charlotte, NC, it seems a bit on the pricey side, but it is definitively not so for this area -- 10-25 for entrees, with most in the mid to upper teens, and plenty of casual options like sandwiches around 10. We got a full meal, with a la carte salads (which were good), entrées for two parents, drinks, kids meals, and a very, very large dessert that we split for under 100 with a generous tip reflecting the wonderful service we received. I'm not really a foodie, honestly, so I'm not going to get into great, specific detail about the food, other than to say it was good, not overly salty but flavorful (again, an exceptional thing for this area -- we've found plenty of the non-flavorful and overly salty, sometimes both), hearty, and creative in a down to earth way that works well if you want a nice night out but want to order without scratching your head and taking risks. I had a "boursin burger" with herbed boursin cheese, and carmelized onions. My wife made a comment along the lines of "that's a heck of a lot of boursin cheese" but I was happy. She had a penne pasta with Bolognese sauce that was solid, and had nice chunks of vegetables in it, unusual for that sauce like carrot (again, not being a foodie, I suspect this may horrify purists). Salads were solid, homemade dressings, homemade croutons. Cons: my sweet potato fries seemed from frozen, as did one of the two kids meals (chicken strips and fries). My other daughter got a bowl of chili that seemed ok but uninspired, and oddly huge for a kids meal -- she's a very hearty eater, and had maybe a third of it, and not because she didn't like it. The service -- at least the service we received -- could not have been better. The waitress said it was a slow night, so aspect of the experience could vary over time. We are definitely going back as from our perspective this place was a solid four stars, somewhere we could actually get in without waiting an hour, and good to take our kids, basically a godsend in what we've found to be a bit of a restaurant wasteland. I started out by giving it five stars but then thought "be reasonable" -- it's not going to make any top ten lists, I don't think. Just good, which for us is good enough. : ) Oh, it was Saturday, and they had live music that was a bit loud, but good --two kids, good voices, interesting electronic equipment (an electric cello), kind of a Wilco meets Jeff Buckley doing covers of Alternative Top 40 thing going on. I love this place! We went there today for lunch and had great food and great service. The kids got chicken tenders. Thumbs up for the chicken tenders. My husband got the spaghetti and meatballs and liked it, but wanted more sauce. I told him he should ask for more, but he did not want to. I tried his meal and thought the meatballs were great. I ordered the Jamaican jerk chicken. The chicken was cooked just right and the broccoli and mashed potatoes were cooked just right. Also, they have great free popcorn while you wait for your food. Met my mom here for dinner. Was greeted and seated promptly at a table on the patio. Music was a little too loud and fast (pop music) for dining and I struggled to hear over it and general din. Wine menu was okay, unimpressive but not cookie-cutter. Patio area was pleasant. There's a sand volleyball court and there were kids burning off energy in it rather than screeching at tables which is always a plus, additionally it was at back of restaurant and separate enough from parking that I didn't feel like I was tailgating. I ordered a glass of Josh Cabernet Sauvignon (over priced at $9) and a cob salad. Salad was fresh and crisp. Our meals came out quickly and we were both pleased. Server was friendly but not overly attentive and missed a few details. Overall it's a nice little place in a small little town. We had a nice lunch here on Saturday. We were there at an "off time", around 3pm. We were the only ones there, for the most part. Although we ate outside on the back patio, the inside looks like it has been recently redone and was quite nice. Our food was very good and the portions were a good size. My MIL's cobb salad was enormous, she didn't even come close to finishing it. My husband's burger was excellent, as was my chicken ceasar salad wrap (and sweet potato fries). My children also enjoyed their meals. We found Red Rock (via Yelp) after visiting Southwick's Zoo - I'm not sure if we will be back in the area anytime soon but if we are, we will certainly pay a return visit. read more

I live in Upton so I have been to Red Rock a few times. The food is very good...the mac and cheese is really rich and cheesy, the french fries are awesome and the burgers are great. I really have a problem with the service though. I see some people on here have had good service but I am not one of them. The first time I came here our waitress stumbled through the specials and didn't let us look at the menu before asking what we wanted. We asked for a few more minutes and she was back in less than a minute. She seemed very rushed and never refilled my water glass or came back to ask if our food was ok. The same thing happened tonight. I came in to have a relaxed birthday dinner for my mom with my sister. I was not expecting anything fancy (it is Upton after all), but the service was awful. I would like to say though, that our waiter was VERY nice. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but a crappy waiter. He was also really rushed..it was not busy at all but our food took forever to arrive, maybe because he was taking every table's orders within seconds of them sitting down and the kitchen couldn't catch up. Im not sure what the problem was, but anyway he made very basic mistakes that made me feel like he wasn't adequately trained. He never refilled our popcorn bowl, he refilled my water once (even though it was over 100 degrees outside) and when he did, he took it by putting his hands all over the top of the glass and bringing it back into the kitchen to refill it which was really gross. When my mom asked about whether she could get the sauce on the side of a dish, he scoffed and said it wouldn't be worth it since you need the sauce on the dish for it to be good. After about 25 minutes we got our food, and put the food down and left without saying anything. My sister had to wave him down to get ketchup and again, he put the ketchup down and immediately left. After that, he never came back to ask how everything was. When he brought our dessert he literally threw the spoons on the table which was not cleared, making the spoons dirty. I will be trying Red Rock again and hopefully can amend this post with more a positive review, but as of right now I would give the food 5 stars and the service 1 star. read more

Surprisingly good place that doesn't look like much from the outside. Instead of a roadhouse, it's got a nicely (but not self-conciously) upscale interior with a bar area, dining room, and outdoor deck. Brunch is good and inexpensive. Creative but again, in no way over-reaching -- they hit the mark perfectly. It's really nice to find a place that serves "American (New)" according to Yelp's description and have it be true...and good. The server forgot our appetizer but we didn't remind him because the main dishes came out quickly and they were huge. Server was friendly and attentive. Not a lot of places to eat around here.
