TLDR; the staff and owner are super friendly and kind here, they make their food with care and always make sure our experience is top notch! If you're looking for a deal on pizza, stop by but DON'T FORGET THE GARLIC TWISTS!!! I don't know what they put in them, but they're heaven on a plate! My boyfriend and I usually come in when we're craving pizza and on a budget (they used to do a special for 2 medium 2 topping pizzas for $20). When you walk in, you'll probably be met by Tony, who is always super attentive and gives A+ customer service at the register. He's more than happy to go over daily specials of the day with a smile, too. We usually walk away with one medium pizza each for $10, which is rare in Downtown Berkeley. My boyfriend and I came in to watch a playoff warriors game a few months back and met the owner who was cashiering. He then gave us a few dollars off our order because anyone who walked in with warriors apparel on got a discount! Lucky us! Can't say enough good things about this place. Super friendly staff. Delicious pizza and I like that I was able to have a Modelo. I love the jazz playing in the background and there's also TVs with games on. Seems like it would be a cool place to meet with friends after work or to watch the game. Most important to me outside of food quality is service. The meat lovers pizza and twisted cheese bread was delicious! We had an issue getting our wings but the busser was quick to fix it and comp them. The food here is absolutely delicious and they make incredible vegan pizzas. Their menu offers specialty vegan pizzas, but also states that "any size or style pizza can be made vegan," meaning (as I interpret it) that you can ask for a veganized version of any of the pizzas on their menu. I ordered a vegan version of the Sweet Hawaiian pizza and it was served to me with vegan cheese, but still had ham and bacon on it. When I took the pizza back, the server actually got a bit flustered with me when I questioned why the pizza was made with meat. She said it wasn't a Hawaiian pizza if it didn't have ham/bacon, and that "vegan" means they put they vegan cheese on it (but apparently don't take the meat off of it). If someone asks for a vegan version, that means NO animal products. I would be less upset about this situation if the server had just apologized and made a fresh one. But the fact that she tried to argue with me about it for a minute was weird. It just showed a lack of education on dietary needs. Overall though, this place is awesome and serves great food and has a good atmosphere, and I'm not personally upset toward the server, I think she's a friendly person and the rest of my interactions with her were great. I just think it's important that restaurant personnel be educated on dietary needs and that an establishment follows through with the promises they make on their menus. read more

If you have special dietary needs ... yes, they have gluten-free AND dairy-free AND soy-free* pizza. If you've never had Daiya vegan cheese, it's almost exactly like real mozzerella on a pizza. The gluten-free crust is super-thin but really good. The first pizza I tried was a meat-lover's, and I wouldn't recommend that unless you like the dripping-in-grease thing. The next time I got ham and mushroom, and it was perfect. They have personal pizza sizes, too, so you can get your own while your friends get a normal pizza. They also deliver. So for all you GF/DF/SF people who thought pizza delivery was sadly in the past, it ain't. *(If you have a soy allergy, I can't vouch for the kind of oil they use, but it's not soy cheese at least) read more

This really is as good as it gets, and I've never had such satisfying pizza since being riddled with both gluten and lactose intolerance. To close the deal, they are generous with toppings, and use all fresh ingredients. The prices are beyond reasonable, they're one of the few places in Berkeley to accept AMEX, and delivery is FREE! I've never eaten in, but have gotten delivery several times. One tip about delivery: I had a bad experience once with a delivery guy who refused to actually deliver the pizza to my door. Thank you to the owner of Red Tomato pizza for responding to my previous review. Like I said this pizza place is literally the best! And they are worried about the customers experience. This will be forever one of my favorite pizza places. When I tell you we love this pizza place we honestly really do. I even ate their pizza literally 15 mins after I gave birth! But our recent experience was a real disappointing one and I hope the owner of the business sees this. My mom went last week to order the usual a family sized pizza. The cashier who was there that day a young female must of been having a bad day because her customer service was HORRIBLE! When my mother ordered the pizza she said what's that, and my mom told her again we want the family sized pizza we have com here several times and always get that one. She kept going back and forth with my mother giving her attitude saying that pizza doesn't exist. She got very angry and said she was going to call her brother and apparently she was talking to her "brother" and if her brother is the owner you need to teach your sister some customer service. After speaking to the "brother" she came back and said my mom needed to order 2 xl pizza because what she is asking for doesn't exist. My mom already irritated at that point decided to leave and not buy pizza. After being a loyal customer it sucks when you have these rude cashiers because now we probably will never get pizza from this place again. read more

Just moved to Berkeley from Manhattan and this place stands as my favorite pizza spot of all time. I used to come here years ago and was thrilled to find out it's still here and as good as ever. Fantastic alternative to cheeseboard if you want something less gourmet but just as tasty (not to mention you can choose your toppings here). I'll also add that they have great service! I ordered a small pizza but received a personal by mistake. When I told them they said to eat the personal and they'll make me an entirely new pizza with any topping I want, plus they gave me another ranch. As a person with celiac disease I'm always wary of places that advertise gluten free when they also do primarily wheat items. I watched them prepare my pizza and was amazed! They clean the counters/pizza stone/slicer to ensure you don't get any pesky gluten particles in your food! It's the only place I've never gotten the "gluten hangover" from. I appreciate important things, like saving the world. But, I REALLY appreciate vegan pizza. Once upon a time, Round Table Pizza lived at 2017 University Ave in Berkeley. While I've never had Round Table Pizza in my life, it happens to be my boyfriend's answer to the question: "If you had a vegan wand and could make anything vegan, what would it be?" I guess it must have been good, in that warm and fuzzy childhood memory kind of way. Well, a few months ago the Round Table Pizza sign was replaced by "Red Tomato Pizza House." Yes, there is some speculation that these two places are actually one and the same (notice, RTP and RTP, coincidence? ... I think not. Or maybe). ANYWAY, the point is, the Red Tomato Pizza House has VEGAN PIZZA! (And a gluten free crust option). They said they can make any of their pizzas vegan, including stuffed crust, whaaa?! They use daiya; the pizza is super affordable; it tastes amazing; and they deliver ... just not to our house five minutes away in Oakland. So, there's that. GARLIC TWISTS! VEGAN GARLIC TWISTS! They aren't on the menu as vegan, but they'll make them vegan for ya. Just remind them that they've done it before and they'll do it again. They just have to omit some sauce they use and use Daiya as the cheese. It's yummy and six of them is very filling. It comes with Marinara sauce, but I find the Marinara to be a little bland. *Hint- Go across the street to Bobby G's, I usually get a salad there and get an extra side of vegan Caesar and dip them in there* Perfection. Pizza is pretty good! My gf and I usually only eat the addicting and delicious deep dish form Patxi's and the pizza bar is set pretty high. But we were pleasantly surprised... We got the vegan stuffed crust with Daiya cheese with pineapples and artichoke hearts and it was definitely better than I expected. The sauce had pretty good flavor and the crust had a good crunch to it. I wished there was more cheese in the stuffed part of the crust, but I know Daiya can be a little expensive. I think next time we order we'll ask if we can pay more to add more cheese. Good, solid pizza and I would definitely order again. So happy that they deliver!!!! read more

I got 2 large pizzas for takeout, the man who took my order was very kind, the pizzas are huge I put half in my freezer for the week and ate 5 slices tonight,( I went overboard but it was so so good) and tasty, best of all, no tortured animals and stolen breast milk. If I had left this review last week, I probably would have given 4 or 5 stars. As it is now, though, I think 3 is being generous. My husband and I have ordered delivery 3 times from Red Tomato in the past 2 weeks, because I disocvered their Cobb Salad. The first time I got it, it was great. It was an adequate size, and really yummy. I did note there was no egg, which was odd (their website says it has egg) and there were carrots. The next time we ordered, the salad was HUGE, and there were no carrots (and still no egg). Still delicious. The last time we ordered, the salad was tiny, and there were carrots again - and they forgot my ranch dressing. Also, the delivery driver didn't even get out of his car and park, he just handed the delivery to my husband through his window. I called to complain about the large variation in salad sizes, as I'm paying the same price each time for the salad and it's never the same size. The girl who answered the phone behaved like she'd never received a complaint before, and didn't really seem that apologetic. She said they just got new salad containers, and the small size would be the size the salads will be from now on. After much umming and aahing, she gave me a $3 coupon. I doubt I'll order again - I am trying to watch my diet and not knowing how much salad I'll get and what will be in it is a problem for me, as is their blase attitude towards the issue. read more

Came here on a Wednesday afternoon at around 2. Ended up getting a Hook and some wings. The wings were alright, not too bad. It was baked, but for some reason still VERY VERY oily. They tasted okay. Better with the ranch. Wings were not too shabby on price, about 4.25 for 6 wings. The place itself is pretty empty with lots of seatings. It may be because of the time i went but still. It is good for groups of about 4 ish people. The one thing I appreciated is the staff. They seemed very nice and accommodating. Allowed us to get the happy hour earlier, but it was simply 1 dollar off our order. All in all, I don't really have a desire to come back. Maybe I will to try the pizza. read more

Good stuff! I've had their pizza twice now, and enjoyed it immensely both times. The (gluten-free) crust was thin and crisp, the sauce was flavorful and tomato-y, and the toppings were well-chosen. Even if you're not vegan, try the vegan cheese; it is tasty. You may have to ask for less of it; they're quite generous with it. No complaints from me about that, though! Note to celiacs and gluten-free folks, you MUST ask for them to not cross-contaminate. Like way too many places out there, they think gluten-free is that lifestyle fad diet thing; they don't realize it works like an allergy, and tiny amounts will set off people's system. However, once I had cleared that up, the lady behind the counter was wonderful: understanding and diligent -- both times I ate pizza here I had zero reaction, which means that yes, she did clean the surfaces & utensils beforehand. A couple weeks ago I saw a sign outside this place for a lunch special: $5.75 (after taxes) for a personal two-topping pizza, salad, and fountain drink. I've been back for the same special four times in the past two weeks. For a place that doesn't seem very busy, the salad is consistently incredibly fresh, with carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, and iceberg lettuce (generous amounts too). The personal pizzas are delicious, although the choices for ingredients are a little limited. The only criticism I have of this place is the blandness of the design. I could replicate their menu on Microsoft Word in a couple of minutes, they have dirty old gumball machines that look like nobody has touched them in years, and the color scheme seems like a failed attempt to be "interesting," with yellow, yellow, yellow, and green tables. I would give them five stars for the food, not because the taste blows my mind, but because it went way beyond my expectations for a place that I stumbled into for a lunch special. Free wi-fi, free air-hockey (have yet to play), flat screen TV's, friendly employees, and reasonable pricing also add to my desire to give this little place five stars. However, it's tough to overlook the aesthetics of this place, and "giving up" a five star rating makes me feel a little too "easy." I'd give it 4.5 if I could. The store needs a lot of work. I ordered the Summer BBQ Chicken personal pizza and was thoroughly impressed. It was loaded with chicken, bacon, veggies, and onions and all for just $6 (drink included). The cashier was friendly, and the pizza came out promptly after ordering. The establishment was pretty clean, but not completely pristine. I'll admit that it was a little eerie that the place was almost completely empty although it was 1pm. Can't wait to try out the rest of their menu. read more
