RJH has been my list of places to visit since it opened 2 years ago. I was in Texas for work when I heard it was opening but left before I could try it. So how good was RJH?? Worth the flight from NY to San Antonio then the 4.5 hour drive from San Antonio there! And yes! The reason for the trip WAS RJH! My friend and I went in Monday around 6:30pm. We were greeted immediately as we walked in and given the option of seating. It was pretty empty with the exception of one other person at the bar and some people coming in for takeout. It's a really big place and it's beautiful in here. LOVE the big Bob Marley/Jamaican flag mural in the back that's also visible from outside. The service was really good. Everything came out quickly and was hot and fresh! We also chatted it up with the owner Adrian who is amazing! Drinks: we went with the rum punch and stuck with it. We had 3-4 rounds and it def punched us at the end of the night! Lol it's the perfect balance of strong and tasty. Food: we started with the Escovitch and RJH Honey BBQ Jerk wings. The Escovitch was soo bomb! I'm not a fan of BBQ sauce but I did try those and will say it was a good balance and the BBQ sauce wasn't overpowering. For entrees we had the "tour of Jamaica" and the Escovitch whole red snapper. The tour of Jamaica is a great idea because it allows you to sample the oxtail, curry goat, and jerk chicken without having to purchase 3 different meals. It's also served with white rice or rice and peas, festival, and steamed cabbage. The oxtails were the star of the tour! It was perfectly seasoned and tender, and came right off the bone! The goat was really good too. I didn't try the jerk chicken. The snapper was my entree and the only thing that was left on my plate were the bones and the lime garnish! It was soo good! I ate the head and everything else! We fully enjoyed our food and dining experience. I will definitely be back and would definitely recommend RJH for any occasion. We ordered the Oxtail Patty and the Tour of Jamaica, which came with curry goat, braised oxtails, jerk chicken, festivals, steamed cabbage, and rice. It comes with a single kind of rice, but there was a mixup and we received both the Jamaican rice and peas and Haitian black rice. Everything looked good when it came out, but the food was not hot and the flavors didn't quite hit. The meats were tender, but they lacked that rich, bold seasoning Jamaican food is known for. Even the sides tasted a bit tired, like they weren't super fresh. I must say, the oxtail patty was delicious but was not as filled as a previous visit. Overall, not terrible -- just missing that freshness and punch that makes Caribbean food so good. We came in around 3 PM on a Sunday--place was about half full, and there seemed to be plenty of staff. The food? Absolutely outstanding--easily five stars for flavor, seasoning, and presentation. Every bite was worth the wait... but **wow**, the wait. Unfortunately, the service was painfully slow. It took a full hour for our food to come out after we ordered, and no one acknowledged the delay or checked in to explain what was happening. Recently went here for lunch on a Saturday. We arrived at 12:30 and were promptly seated. It wasn't crowded but the music was a little loud. We all had the rum punch because let's face it, what's a good Caribbean restaurant if they don't make a good rum punch? Luckily they did not disappoint. Management also keeps the WiFi passcode secret from the staff so if you're eating in you have horrible phone service. We came in around 6:30 PM and unfortunately had one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a while. Service was disorganized from the start. We waited about 10 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our order, and the first waitress never put in our app order. Another server eventually took over, but we had to repeatedly ask for basics like drinks, silverware, plates, and even to-go boxes. Our waiter was nice, but the service overall really missed the mark. We originally wanted beef patties, but they were out and only had chicken. The chicken patties took about 20 minutes to come out not hot. The flavor was decent, though mostly pastry with very little filling. Our wings, which we ordered at 6:45, didn't come out until after 7:30, and the first batch was burnt. The server admitted he burnt the sauce and said he dropped more for us, but by the time the replacement wings came, we didn't even want them anymore. When our main food finally arrived, the rice and peas were bland, the cabbage was good, the jerk chicken was tender but tasted more baked than smoked, the curry chicken was a little salty but okay, and the oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender but also a little salty. To make things worse, they automatically add an 18% gratuity to all dine-in orders. I wouldn't have minded if the service and food quality were up to par, but they weren't. Overall, between the slow service, mistakes, lack of attentiveness, and underwhelming food, the experience was very disappointing. Based on my visit here for three beef patties, kids Mac and cheese, and bread pudding, I give this place 4/5 stars, and that's only because the bread pudding wasn't the greatest (the rum oversaturated the flavor and made it soggy). We recently catered food from Reggae Jerk Hut for my daughter's high school graduation party and everything was delicious! We ordered large pans of the stew chicken, jerk chicken, mac and cheese, cabbage, and rice and peas. Every single dish was full of flavor and cooked perfectly! My family flew in from NYC for the party and everyone was asking me where I got the food from! This is hands down the best Caribbean food in the Dallas area and worth the drive to McKinney. Catering tip: If you're picking up a large order, I recommend packing a cardboard box in your trunk or laying something down to prevent the sauce from spilling. This was my second time visiting this restaurant. The first time I went everything from the food, service, and vibe was on point. I don't live in Texas so I had been craving this place and couldn't wait to come back. 2 weekends ago when I finally did get a chance to come back to this restaurant. The service was absolutely horrible. My brother and I sat down ordered an appetizer(we got the wings) it took 45 min to an hour just for the wings to come to the table. Our waitress who was serving us, apparently her shift ended and she just left. She didn't give us a heads up or anything that her shift had ended and another waiter or waitress would be taking over our table. We did place our entree order with her before she left. We finally received our appetizer and as we were sitting there waiting for our entrees to come out(this took about an hour too), one of the waiters came by the table and asked if we were ready to pay. We hadn't even received our food yet, so why would we pay without even receiving our meal yet? I explained to him that we hadn't received our food yet and that the waitress that was waiting our table left. He asked what we ordered and we told him. Another 30 minutes go by and a different waiter comes by the table and asked us what we ordered again... we finally got our food, I ordered the jerk chicken with black rice and the rasta pasta with oxtails. The jerk chicken came out cold and the pasta was lukewarm. At this point I asked to speak with the manager. She came by the table, I explained everything to her and that the chicken was cold, she proceeded to tell me she would get me fresh food, but at this point my brother and I were ready to go. She took my plate and within less than a minute maybe 2 minutes at the most she brought my food back, the exact same plate and all, all she had done was place the plate in the microwave. And we can all tell when something has just been warned up in the microwave. I asked for our ticket and I'm not the type of person looking for handouts but the customer service was awful. She brought our tab out and said "I took off the gratuity" I think it's pretty wild they charge gratuity for a party of 2. She then proceeded to ask if we wanted free drinks to go. In my opinion she should have took the jerk chicken entree off the ticket if anything. I ended up spending over $100 for mediocre food. The food at this place is really good but this particular time it wasn't at all. My brother got the Rasta pasta with jerk shrimp and his food was just average and lukewarm too. As much as I like this place and wanted to like this place for the second time. I will not be returning due to how poorly the customer service is and was. It's almost as if they don't care about their customers or how they are treating them maybe it was just us. I arrived on a Saturday for the official grand opening. It's conveniently located right off the highway with ample parking. For starters, the ambiance made me feel like I was back in Kingston. The decor was very welcoming and we were immediately greeted as we entered the restaurant. I knew I was going to write this review on the newest Jamaican restaurant in McKinney so I sampled a variety of items. My first drink was the coconut martini, made with coconut rum and vodka. The rim was trimmed with coconut and a pineapple slice. My second drink was the Kingston Mule, made with rum, tangy lime, lemon sorbet & ginger beer. Whatever you do, DO NOT order the Pina Colada, it tasted like coconut water. Where da liquor at??????? The best three drinks at our table hands down were the zombie, rum punch and the coconut martini. For an appetizer, my friend had the smoked honey barbecue jerk wings. He said they were flavorful with a nice kick. I had the Jamaican patty, it did not disappoint. For our meals, I had the jerk chicken. It was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The Rasta pasta with jerk chicken was equally amazing. My only complaints were the following, 1) The service was slow; 2) My friend ordered a drink and was told that it was difficult to make, so he was asked to order something else; and 3) Some of the drinks were so watered down, they weren't worth the calories (The Dunn's River Falls, the Pina Colada and the Kingston Mule) Reggae Jerk Hut is definitely a restaurant worth trying. The food was decent and the drinks were good & strong, until a gnat ended up in my drink and they weren't willing to replace the rest of my drink without charging me. My friend and I ordered the plantain cups with jerk shrimp, oxtail tacos, conch fritters, HBBQ jerk wings, and black Haitian rice. Nearly the whole menu outside of entrees. The food took at least 20 minutes and our drinks took about 10 (mind you there was only one other table). The oxtail tacos had several chunks of fat , which I wasn't TOO moved by since it is oxtails which are fatty, there was a mini bone in our plantain shrimp cups but they were the most delicious thing. The conch fritters were filled with too much breading and the sauce was simply spiked miracle whip. We asked for the wings fried extra extra hard and that didn't happen as they were already coming out as we asked for the request (mind you we were already waiting 15+ min and only one other table also). To contrary though, Haitian rice was great. It was two of us and there were 6 fritters we ate one each and I tried to eat another and realized we didn't like them, she didn't offer to replace after we expressed our disdain and we went ahead & ordered more food instead. & was still charged for fritters, but we charged to the game. Lastly as we were finishing up, I had half of my drink left to drink and look inside to see a live gnat flying around in it. I simply asked if I could have the last half replaced as I wanted to finish it and was told I would only able to be given a premade drink and still be charged for it... mind you I've been a server, cocktail server, and bare tender on and off for seven years so I speak from more than enough experience! Came today with high hopes, as a Haitian-American new to DFW who is missing her mom's griot and bannan peze! While nothing can compare to mom's cooking, the "Little Haiti" plate came pretty close. Pikliz and salad russe were good, while the diri Jon Jon lacked that extra oomph to my husband and I. But it did the job.
