Lifetime warranty you will be missed. I miss lifetime warranty. I miss it a lot. I miss it not because I used it often, but it was a nice safety blanket knowing things were warrantied outside the one year window. That said, the staff are knowledgeable and helpful (sometimes it can be hard to find them though which can become irksome when you need a quick find or have a question). Prices are often comparable to other stores, but obviously not Amazon priced. However, the convenience of getting a roof rack kayak mount and talking with staff has its perks - esp on a time crunch. I have come here for a few occasions for snowboarding gear to hiking gear to camping gear and they had it all! The best time to go is during their incredibly worth it sales. REI has everything you could need for a variety of outdoor adventures. From biking, skiing, camping, climbing, kayaking, running, and a host of others, REI will get you outfitted with the best gear in the industry. The gear ain't cheap, and it will last forever is cared for properly. And until recently, if the gear didn't last forever, they would return or replace it no questions asked. If you plan on spending more than a couple hundred dollars here in your life, you should spend the $20 to become a lifetime member. Members get 10% back on their purchases, and have access to quarterly "garage sales" where you can get returned gear for next to nothing. Employee helpfulness is hit or miss, but generally is pretty good. They also have a repair shop for your bike and ski gear. Ive had my snowboard tuned up here, and they did a great job! Clean, nice location. This location always is organized and has good choices. Their clearance section is nice sized and the staff is very helpful. The parking lot is never full, it is in a convenient location and their return policy is great! We are at REI too often. Maybe even more than some employees! They have so many things for so many activities that it becomes THE place to go. You can walk in and say, "I want to go rock climbing". You can attend classes, find the gear, talk to some experienced folks, etc. Whatever you need, they have it. REI has a dividend program. Every February, you get a percentage back from your purchases throughout the year. Great! It's a nice surprise mid-season for snowboarding equipment! It never hurts! Last year, we walked in on Black Friday and they were giving away gift cards worth $5 up to $100. Scratch the card and hope you get the max. We're going again this year in hopes the promo is on. REI outlet (online only) is also great! No charges for shipping to the store. In fact, you can have internet orders shipped to the store free of charge. read more

Two minutes later he says the item I want is on the shelf, so he looks for 10 seconds and gets distracted so he decides to help someone else. He never returns to help me. My boyfriend and I had a camping trip coming up and of course, we went to REI to get everything we needed. I like this store because, although it's not huge, it has everything we need. Everything is in stock, nice and orderly on the shelves. The staff is friendly and encourage shoppers to become REI members. I appreciate that they don't pressure shoppers to join, but just suggest it. Members get 10% back each year and the return policy is great too. Shut up and take my money! The staff here has been consistently great! Sometimes they're spread very thin, but when you get some quality time with one of them from the section you're shopping in, you'll be able to make some pretty informed decisions about what to get, and why. And, you'll know exactly why you should buy those ten other items that you'll need to do whatever it is you're going to do, as well (and I mean that in the best way possible! Better safe than sorry). I frequent this location and every time I walk away a happy camper ;) Sometimes they run out of stuff pretty quickly, especially if it's peak season and it's a common item. If there's anything specific you're looking for, it's best to call ahead to see if it's in stock. If they do have it, do a prepaid hold. They have an amazing return policy, so it's not so terrible to buy it early. Plus, if you ask them, they can hold your item for a really long time (months?). It'd be easier if they just transferred items from store to store, but unfortunately that's not their policy. You can, however, order online and pick your shipping destination. Tip: Costco is only a parking lot away in case you need to stock up on food or other misc. bulk items before you do your outdoorsy thing. read more

I love REI...I bought my :::ahem::: expensive bike here and their repair shop is excellent! When I came bck a week later to purchase a Thule bike rack, the guy asked if I needed help installing it. I said, "sure." He went out and spent about 20 minutes attaching it to the back of my car. Apparantly they charge about $50 for any assistance needed, but he gave me a useful tip, if you come early in the morning before it's busy, they'll help you for free!!!! =) REI...I heart you. read more

If you have a health concern that exempts you from wearing a mask the staff will try to force you to wear a tight shield to further obstruct your breathing. I'm not a sue-happy person, but the treatment I endured here is the reason the law was written. I've been shopping at this store since I have lived in Sacramento, about 10 years now. I have spent tons of money and have gotten awesome high quality merchandise. Yesterday (Feb 9, 2013) was just a little different. I am an amputee and I am learning how to ski. I started out renting equipment, then I bought some cheap used boots and ski's, even though I only use one, at a ski resort. After my most recent lesson I decided to invest in a good ski boot. I went to another sporting goods store before deciding to go check out REI again. I almost didn't go because I know they are quite expensive but I decided to go anyway. I stood in front a massive wall of boots feeling completely lost an overwhelmed. Enter Brad. Brad asked if he could help, I was very hesitant mainly because I felt like I didn't belong there and had no business buying ski boots. I decided to let him help me. I explained my situation and what I was looking for "No problem" he said. I tried on several different boot's (left boot only) he was very helpful in explaining the difference between a $100 boot and an $800 boot. Naturally the most comfortable boot I tried was way out of the range that I was willing to pay. I came down to two boots, both on sale. When trying on the slightly more expensive boot I couldn't decide Brad asked "Is it worth $50 more?" actually yes!!! SOLD!!! $199 ($216 with tax and member discount) I just returned from the store today (Feb 10, 2013) from leaving my cheap used ski's and the left boot to have it fitted to both ski's and have the ski's tuned up. Sure, REI may be pricier than a lot of places however you can't beat the quality of the merchandise and the service. The staff is VERY helpful and patient. My partner and I both had to get backpacking backpacks and had no idea what to look for. The staff there was very good about telling us how to fit the pack, they measured us, helped us pick out the right one and didn't leave us till they were all done with us, even on a busy Saturday. I recommend REI over any other sports store. They have more variety, well trained staff who really know a lot about their products. I really think REI picks people to work there based on what the employee knows and not just because they are looking for a job. read more

PSA: as of summer 2018, there is a homeless encampment practically next to the store, and two people I know have had items stolen from their cars when they parked on the side of the store where it is shady. The very unhelpful manager informed us that they do not bother to have cameras over there, and that even if they did, "you can't see much on the cameras." It's not unusual for someone to want to park in the shade and leave their windows cracked on a 100+ degree summer day - don't do that here! read more

Well known for quality, another little gem within the REI outfit is the return policy. I recently joined the co-op and bought some Vibram shoes ('cause everybody's doin' it) and went with the KSOs. Wore them for 2 weeks in water, mud, rocks, whatever. Then I got an email saying the Treksports were on sale for less than the KSOs, which I wanted to upgrade anyhow. I decided to test the reputation of REI's famous return policy. I'd been wearing the shoes for 2 weeks, they were basically undamaged, but they were filthy and the smell was formidable. I took them back "as is" and made sure to rough up the box a little. At the return counter, I was greeted by an old woman with an even older sounding name, Joyce I think. I said plainly that I wanted to return them and handed her my receipt. Without a word, or even a glance, she began typing in whatever they do. Her only question, "Do you want cash or the balance returned on your credit card?" Well, since she wasn't going to question my morales I decided to do it myself, pointing out how dirty and smelly they were. I then told her that I saw a sale for the superior model and told her that's why I was returning them. She shrugged and put the balance on a refund type receipt, and I went and bought the new shoes and gained $5 difference. Gotta love that, right? Plus, someone who really wants those shoes is going to be able to buy them at a gear swap for like $9. That's called a win-win. We're done here. read more

I have been thinking about getting a pair of vibram five finger shoes. I have read about the benefits of it but the cost is what prevented me from doing it in the past. I noticed REI usually have expensive stuff as in full price. I like finding deals and every now and then I will actually find a deal at REI. Well I struck gold because REI is currently having a summer sale. They have different deals for their deal of the day. I guess I have really good timing because I stumbled on their website when they had a Vibram five finger shoe for sale around 45$ and then additional 10-20% off which made the shoes around $36. I figured $36 bucks is a steal because knowing REI return policy for REI members if I didnt like the shoes I can easily return it. Okay great sale online but what the heck is my size in these weird finger shoes? Well thats when I went over to the store. There were a ton of people in the shoe section because apparently they were having a sale on a lot of the footwear so everyone was trying on shoes. I was able to get some assistant and I pretty much tried on every single pair of Vibram five fingers to see the difference and try to figure out which one I liked. I had 2 staff help me out both of which were super resourceful and answered any of the questions I had about the shoe. I ended up ordering the shoe online because it was cheaper on the REI website ( I think it was last years model so they didn't carry it in the store). If you can find the deals at REI it is totally worth it especially if you are a REI member. I have found pretty good deals here before and I probably will find good deals here again. REI I am so glad you are in Sacramento and only a 15 minute drive from work. =) read more

REI is like crack to me. I think I've kicked the habit until I walk back in through the doors and find myself needing a fix of North Face, Patagonia, Solomon, Osprey, etc. The service is always helpful and they took their time with me when I bought a new backpack. I also had four different sleeping bags out and was just laying in all of them for almost an hour before I made my decision. The member's rewards a worth the $20 fee. The more you buy, the more you get back with the Co-Op and then you have the member's only 25% off coupons. Free shipping to any REI store is a great feature as well. This is REI's return policy: "Returning or Exchanging Items You can return or exchange purchases from REI or REI-OUTLET by mail or at any of our retail locations, regardless of whether you made your purchase online, by phone or in an REI store. You must have a proof of purchase (store receipt, gift receipt, shipping invoice, or member purchase history) for all returns and exchanges." No where in the corporate return policy does it say you need to provide the original credit card to process a return. No where does it say you will get store credit without the card. The sales associate and store manager refused to allow my wife to return her Christmas gift even though their corporate policy specifically states you do not need to present the original credit card. How is this good customer service? We rode our bikes to this store #21 on 1790 Expo Way - 30 miles round trip - but I had to make a separate return trip with my credit card for them to process my return. This has now turned into a BAD customer experience. I went from being a 28 year customer to being a former customer. REI, if you care, you need to fully disclose your return policy. read more

My wife went into REI looking to outfit herself with new snowboarding gear. Greg, the Master Bootfitter and Personal Outfitter was very helpful and efficient. He helped us while servicing several other customers at the same time. He was very knowledgeable about both skiing and snowboarding boots, bindings and skis/boards. Being an experienced skier myself, it was nice to talk with someone who could speak from personal experience with highly technical knowledge. Having camped so much in my lifetime I'm surprised I don't live here. The selection here is okay at best but I've never left empty handed. At this specific location the people who work there are very nice and helpful. Once of the ladies spent 5 minutes with me while I asked every question about headlamps I could think of. I tend to have a hard time spending money on my self so i always make sure I have the right items becuase I am only buying them once. REI Bike Rental fills a gap for visitors. We had a group of 13 visiting from Southern California that wanted to bicycle the American River Parkway. We could not find a venue near our hotel in Old Town that could handle a group this size, until we found REI. REI has enough bikes, though we had to be somewhat flexible on sizes and configuration. They were very helpful in organizing the rentals and having the bikes and paperwork ready for us when we arrived. The bikes were in excellent condition and came with a helmet, lock and tire patch kit. They were also located very close to the bike path. I would use them again. read more

Great service, great selection. I went in to get cycling sunglasses, and the guy just kept pulling them out of the case, letting me try on just about everything they had. I finally narrowed it down to the right pair for me. He didn't seem impatient or bored, and just let me do my thing. Checkout was quick and easy. I've been coming here for years! And I've never once had a negative experience. I recently came in for a backpack for a a trip that I'm planning for the winter overseas. I've got a hiking backpack but I don't have a "luggage" bag. After much browsing, I found myself comparing all different types of backpacks: from Tortuga to Patagonia. Somehow I came across an Eagle Creek Global Companion (not rated as high as Tortuga ~$200+) but still a sturdy bag that my Amazon searches found for $150. Which is great considering it's market price is $230. I ended on REI site to compare prices and found the same bag for $98!!! WHAAAT, so RAD! I ordered it and expected it to take weeks but it was in within a week and all I had to do was walk right into the customer service. The nice young lady asked for my ID and POOF there it was in perfect condition! I only wish I had known it would be so quick so I could walk around the store before carrying it around.... I ended up leaving it in the car before grabbing a travel towel with a $20 coupon, leaving my total at $4. I've been a member for years.. and I love the dividends. I went to REI on Memorial Day which was also the day that they had their annual sale so it was pretty busy. I'm giving them 5 stars because they were well prepared for the crowds. I arrived around 6pm and the store was still very well organized/clean and the staff were still super helpful and nice. I got off work at 8pm & went to Yelp which said they close at 9. So I only had an hour to do the dam thing, which is locate & purchase a tracker for my bf who is an avid runner. His friends has one & I felt that he needed one to. I called from the parking lot & was directed to a nice gentleman who was waiting for me in the Tracker-section. I'd like to share a story about my first (and last) experience with this location of REI. To preface the story, please note that I am 17 years old, entering the store with my best friend to purchase a gift for our water polo coach. Our idea was to get her a hydroflask backpack. A worker quickly helped us, unlocked the backpack so we could try it on, and answered all of our questions - no problem at all. When we decided that we would indeed be making the purchase, our decision was made under the impression that we would get the 20% off member discount since my friend's dad was a member. We reached the cashier, gave her the account number, and she says "okay, that'll be $294" dollars. Obviously there was some confusion. I inquired about the 20% off members discount; she replied in a demeaning tone, "He's not the account holder [in reference to my friend]. What if his dad wants to use the 20% discount on a different item?" Of course I am sympathetic to the population who does not have healthy relationships between fathers and sons, but when we input his father's information it seemed blatantly obvious that this was not the case. My friend responded with "I'm sure it's fine", which was met with a contempt "If you don't mind, I'd like to help the next customers in line. If you can prove that it's okay with your dad then I'll honor the discount." My friend immediately texted his father, received an instantaneous response, showed the cashier -- only to be stopped in his tracks with a raised pointer finger. Without even having the decency to speak to him, she forced us to wait while she served the next guest. Finally, we were able to purchase the bag with the illusive 20% discount that we fought so hard to obtain. As she reluctantly applied the 20% off and forced out a "Have a nice day," I thought to myself about how her inappropriate and disrespectful tone completely ruined my mood. Entering, I was excited to get a gift for my beloved coach, but now all I am left with is resentment for this REI and specifically this worker. I'm sure others have had wonderful experiences with this REI - possibly even this worker, but youth be warned: the staff appears to be entirely unregulated in their manner of customer interaction. There is a possibility that the basic respect extended to others does not apply to teenagers in this REI. I cannot speak for other adults, however my belief is that people should be treated equally; I find it hard to imagine that this cashier would've treated others with this unambiguous disregard for respect. read more

One of my favorite places to get outdoor gear. As a member you get great service and a dividend on your purchases. They have a great selection of the best gear and it's usually in stock. Excellent return policy as well. Everything gets tracked on your membership so when you lose your receipt, like I always do, it's not a problem to return stuff. Nope, after 3 more times of coming by, I ended up purchasing a membership card. They just have the coolest stuff here! I like coming here to just window shop sometimes when I've got time to kill. The people are super friendly and helpful, and I appreciate that they are not pushy at all- not like those aggressive salespeople at the mall where 10 different people ask me if I need any help. The only thing I must say is a downfall is that they're kind of expensive. But so far, the items I've purchased here have lasted- I guess you get what you pay for. Expensive, but good quality items. Ugh, this place is making me seriously poor. It's a great store for outdoor gear - very clean, has a huge selection, and is well-organized. Most of the employees here are knowledgeable, helpful, and willing to answer questions (miles ahead of other sports stores that hire teens who know next to nothing). Customer service is usually great, except when they are busy or understaffed...and then, well, good luck. Basically, if the parking lot is full, don't bother coming in (unless you're just making a quick purchase). The prices, well gosh I can't even look at their price tags anymore because it makes me hemorrhage out of my eyes. Every time, I check-out pretty happily with my new gear, and then two steps out the door I get this sinking feeling like I've just been robbed. Now, I have to knock off a star because they don't allow dogs. In fact, they are the only sporting goods store I know of that does not allow dogs inside (c'mon even Nordstrom allows dogs). I promise, I'm not one of those people who feels entitled to bring their dog everywhere, but hear me out. REI has an ENTIRE SECTION DEDICATED TO DOG GEAR - dogpacks, clothing, boots, toys, etc. But...I can't bring my dog in to try anything on?!?! Boggles my mind. I don't know any other store that sells dog gear and does not allow dogs inside. I have to buy a ton of stuff because my dog is always between sizes, and I end up having to return most of it. Which brings me to their return policy... REI has a pretty good return policy, and they even take used returns. I decided to put their 100% satisfaction policy to the test when I tried to return an opened roll of NUUN tabs. FAIL. Well, they wouldn't take the return because they didn't want to "damage" out the item (they can't resell it like the other used stuff). So if you're wondering if their satisfaction guarantee applies to edible items, apparently it does not. You may think this is petty, but you know what, $8 can feed a whole family of 4 across the street at Costco. read more

Went in to look for some winter essentials since I will be traveling to the frigid midwest this holiday season. I needed Under Armour cold weather gear and a beanie. Not only did I find a great beanie (Dikine, black $30) but also 2 Under Armour products (one of the items was 40% off). I was surprise to see that they have a large selection of North Face and Under Armour (my favorite products). Everyone is very nice and friendly, always asking if I needed help.
