I'm kinda torn here... They do have really cool stuff... Yes, it is a huge store with a somewhat amazing selection and somewhat helpful knowledgable employees, but... the prices are way high and the one thing I went in for was not there. I went in looking for a camera backpack and while their selection of every other kind of backpack was daunting their selection of camera bags was very disappointing. There was one SMALL display with about 4-5 bags to choose from, that's it. When we asked an employee about camera bags he told us that was all they had, but pointed us in the direction of the regular backpacks. Ummm, sorry, but if someone is asking for a camera equipment bag, a regular backpack is not really an option. We didn't want to waste the trip there so we browsed around the store for a while, and quickly figured out that price wise clearance was our only option. Only problem is that even on clearance t-shirts were $30ish and flannels/long sleeve were $50ish etc. Even the clearance items were an investment. I'm sure the quality and performance are top-notch, but still, it was a little more than we were willing to spend for just browsing. We left empty handed. read more

Needed a backpack fitting, some new hiking shoes, and a few other items. My partner and I went to this specific REI location and were really pleased with the staff. From the floor members to the cashier, everyone was so respectful and kind. Deven helped me get the perfect pack fit and was so kind! I had a few folks help me with shoes who were also very sweet. This review is the for the bike shop department. I brought in my 2007 Stumpjumper FSR Elite that I have not used in years for a maintenance check. Andrew who helped me at the shop was very helpful and knowledgeable. He took his time to attend to all my questions and concerns with my bike. I left my bike at the shop on Saturday and they said they will be done by Friday since they're fully book. To my surprised I got a call on Wednesday that my bike is ready. I took my bike for a 8 mile ride and performed extremely well. The hub that normally makes noise on my bike is gone. I am not sure if riders notice that but compare to my friends bike this noise is gone. Shifting was flawless. I took my bike on another ride this time 14 miles long and it still performed very well. I will have REI bike shop take care of all my maintenance needs. read more

REI is just a top quality store w/ top quality customer service. If you have an REI card, you can literally return anything that you bought and receive a full price refund within 12 months. I mean that is straight ridiculous. For example, I bought these hiking shoes, took them to Indonesia, did a hike, was unsatisfied because the shoes felt like hiking in bricks. Fast forward 3 months later, I was able to return these same shoes WITHOUT A RECEIPT and GET A FULL REFUND, WAIT WHAT. Yes this really happened and it is a true story. I mean they were worn from my hike but they still gave me a full refund. Granted my information on the product was on my REI card, so they just pulled that up as my receipt and all was needed was my phone number which had my account information. This place is straight amazing. Other than buying those brick shoes, everything here is high quality clothes, shoes, outdoor stuff, whatever. With that being said, I will keep going here, REI is a staple of America, their return game is on another level, facts people. read more

Update to a review from 2013. Note that I love REI's mission, advocacy for fitness and the health of our environment. It's their business practices I question. This is based on a phone call to this store. Facing a monetary loss and negatively impacting customer service to a long-time devoted member, the associate never even attempted to allow management to avoid a costly transaction. One which other associates had been advised myself and other members to keep in mind should prices drop or a sale occur. Products are ridiculously over priced. I purchased a bike rack at a local store at full price (over $400 which the sales associate knew was stretching my budget) but was an unavoidable immediate need at time. The product goes on sale little more than 30 days later, but admittedly beyond their short 2 week match for price reductions. The store would rather i return the original rack and purchase a new boxed rack on day 1 of the 20% off sale. The original rack will have to be "garaged out" at a reduced price. The long-time associate who sold me the rack knew of the coming sale. Now REI will be selling a boxed bike rack priced at over $400 at 20% off and the original rack at a reduced price at the next Garage Sale. A double loss that could be avoided. A poor business decision on their part. Maybe the manager will see it differently. A one year return policy and they don't expect members to take advantage of major discounts? Someone in corporate isn't thinking. I slightly better original price on the floor, or understanding of how policies could favor both the store and member, could possible avoid a probably loss of 30-40% on a $450 item. I'm dumbfounded.... But 20% of $450 is a lot of money to me. They could even offer it in the form of a gift card guaranteeing the money will return to REI. read more

Good grief, can they be any more pushy with their credit card? I came here for the first time with my hubby in search of a warm North Face jacket for the both of us. It was fairly empty when we shopped here on a late Thursday evening. This place is definitely a one-stop shop for all your outdoor gear from snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing - you name it, they'll have it! I didn't feel like they had a huge selection of North Face jackets to choose from for ladies; however they did carry a vast selection of brands with jackets that are quite similar to North Face. The staff on the floor are super helpful and friendly. The gentlemen who I bombarded with a whole bunch of questions actually had a genuine desire to help me and I was very impressed. He walked me through the ladies outerwear and told me the different types of jackets they carry and even showed me how and where to look at the sizes on the tags! Now THAT'S not the typical service you would ever receive at any store! My hubby and I walk up to pay at the register and the cashier immediately gives us his spiel about their super great credit card they have. Of course we give him his time to share his "great" offer but once my husband heard the word "annual fee" - he immediately said no. After telling him that we weren't interested THREE times (I kid you not) he was still questioning why we weren't interested. He was persistent and we actually found it quite rude that it started to fluster us. I mean, I do understand that it is his job - but when someone tells you no THREE times you should get the idea. When we walked out the store another couple hollers over at us and says "They're too pushy with their sales! He was the same with us!" Don't get me wrong though, this store is great to shop at for all your outdoor gears - but if you can find it online or somewhere else, I suggest you take the alternate route or you'll have to battle it out with the pushy cashiers!! I don't usually write reviews for chain stores that aren't franchised. The service is just so homogenized across them all that there usually isn't much difference and it can apply to pretty much any store. But I recently had such a bad experience at the Roseville store, I felt like I needed to write one and this one is to balance it out. And yeah, this one pretty much applies to every other REI I've been to, including this one. Just not Roseville. Been a co-op member for jeez... I think 15 or so years. For people who like the outdoors, this place is like a candy store. There's something for everyone. Bikes, Ski equipment, Car racks, jackets, a whole mess of footwear from trail-runners to hiking boots to apres-ski clogs to mocs to flip-flips. Sheer breadth of product is never a problem at REI - just variety. Because it's such a general purpose, outdoor gear store, selection for each is usually limited to a few top selling brands and the REI house brand, so if you're looking for some obscure brand, out of luck. Quality is usually reasonably high, as are the prices. Service is spectacular. I've taken my bike in for tune-ups, skis in for tune-ups and waxes, same with my snowboard. Prices, and they usually have some nice co-op member deals, are pretty reasonable and I've always been satisfied with the job I've received. Staff members I've interacted with over the years have pretty universally been friendly, amiable, and knowledgable. Won't deny that I loved the Cal Expo store enough to want to work there while in college. Then I had enough sense to realize the daily drive from Davis would probably end up not being worth it. Joining the Co-op is also completely worth it. I don't spend that much money at REI every year, but always end up with a nice sized dividend every year. Really, the Cal Expo store is great. They're all (except Roseville) prety awesome. If there was more selection and better prices (which really isn't totally reasonable), probably be 5 stars easy. read more

I really enjoy my trips to this REI. They have good variety and enough sales people available to help with questions and in finding things. I like going there even when I don't need to shop for anything specific, it's just fun to browse. There used to be one person in Customer Service that was difficult to work with in exchanges or returns. I just avoided her and it was fine. But I haven't seen her there in awhile so I feel free to return and exchange again when necessary. read more

This review is solely for the customer service I received last night from Paige! Drove over last night to pickup a rain jacket I had put on hold, went directly to customer service and Paige was there to give it to me! I was trying it on in store before buying and she told me about the excellent return policy and asked me questions about my day. It was lovely talking to her after a long day and I felt like the customer service I was getting was super good considering they were 15 minutes to closing. She looked up the jacket in different colors, offered to order it for me if I wasn't satisfied with my purchase, told me I could return it without a receipt if need be. It was just great - she answered all the questions I had. She wasn't super pretentious either. Every time I go to REI I feel like I always get someone looking me up and down and it just becomes a terrible shopping experience for me. The store itself is huge - very clean and organized well. My first time coming here today. I always past by here whenever I go to Costco. I always tell myself, I should check it out. Today I checked it out. My experience was pleasant. I was amazed with the wide selection of outdoor equipment they offer. The staff were friendly and always willing to help. They explained the benefits of becoming a member of REI. They had this program where for $20 you sign up and you get 10% back every year. You also get special discounts on certain times of the year for being a member. It's a great marketing program. I also appreciate that they hold classes for people to take. I'll definitely look into it. I would have signed up to be a member of REI if I was a frequent customer. However, I feel I can find things online for a cheaper price. I would definitely come in here if I was looking for something that I need right away. Keep up the great work REI! read more

I'm usually not a fan of of chain stores, but I must admit these guys are pretty good. In the Sacramento area this one is the largest of the three (Roseville and Folsom are the other two) so you'll probably get more of a selection here. I was in here yesterday looking for some snow gear and they had the better selection for me (a women's xs) around town. The staff was really helpful. I wasn't able to find the jacket that I wanted in the store, but they were able to find it in another store and thanks to REI membership I get it shipped for free! The prices are just the regular retail price as everywhere else, not overpriced or cheap (unless on sale or REI outlet online). Actually, you can find some pretty good deals on children's crocs. $10 or $15 for $25 kids' crocs! To save some money just be a member and earn dividends and get discounts on rentals and shop services. read more

As a member, you get 20% off any item coupons and discounts to their awesome classes and field trips. I love coming in for their used gear sales in which you'll find like-new or brand new return items for sale at prices that make you feel as if you're stealing. REI carries my preferred brand of shoe, Vibram Fivefingers, so it's my go-to store for when I need to buy replacements. They also carry a variety of minimalist, casual, hiking and running shoes and slippers so anyone could find something that suits their needs. While I'm there, I tend to browse their Sale racks as their previous season's inventory is being replaced and sold cheap. The clothing selection is surprisingly nice, rather than the "everything Earthy tones" expectation one would understandably have when shopping here. From the backpacking and camping section to snowboarding and biking, the staff always seems knowledgeable and good at answering questions. The one issue I do have with the store is that the brands they choose to carry tend to be expensive. I tend to only take advantage of Sales because of this, which I receive emails about when they take place. Handy store with a lot to offer. I recommend anyone to become a member. read more

The store is well organized and clean and items are well spaced . Staff are nice and willing to help you find what you need. They're open to giving their own experience with the gear too. They sell many brand name items (North Face, Columbia, etc.) but they also stock plenty of their own brand. The prices are reasonable. It's $20 for membership. I Love REI. This is "the" store for all your outdoor sports needs. I love that REI gives its members 10% back on purchases in the form of a dividend each year. This check usually arrives in time for one of their annual 20% off any item sale. The way I shop REI is to peruse the website, make a list of what I want and then hand that list to a staffer who gladly walks around the store, handing me the items that I want, even if it is not in their "area". i am surprised they don't drown in their own snot! the prices are EXORBITANT - i could see paying premium for AMERICAN MADE but i only saw made is China. when i asked the salesman if i could keep the PLASTIC hanger on my dress he replied, "no, it's to keep costs down" FOR WHO?! (cheap cheap cheap) so i check the several fives & tens he hands me as change for a $100 bill & he says, "we check our bills" guess what - SO DO I! then he acts like he's shooing us away. Just went there for the first time today. So far I'm diggin' this place. I needed a new pair of running shoes that wouldn't hurt my feet, and the customer rep Gavin was awesome! He hooked me up with a pair that (so far) are heaven on my feet. Got home and took the dogs for a quick jog, and I could really tell the difference. Gavin was very friendly and knowledgeable about their products and the bro def needs some props! Prices are a lil' high, but the quality for the products seems worth it. I'm a fan so far. read more

REI is an amazing company and this location happens to be one of the better locations out of the three in a sixty mile radius. Being one of the bigger locations it will always have many more items in stock than Roseville & Folsom location. I have usually had very pleasant experiences at this location until recently encountering a middle aged Asian lady whom is more than unpleasant to deal with. I walked up to ask her where I might be able to find the "Mountain Hardwear AP" pants.. or any MH pants for that matter. The first thing I was asked was if I was a member, yes I am I replied, could you point me in the direction of the Mountain Hardwear pants. Then she asks if I'm aware of the sales going on... yes I replied 20% off that's why I'm here... Mountain Hardwear pants?? Where about might they be located? At this point she asks what size I need and looks them up on her phone and starts to go through each color of the pants. I still haven't been guided to the pants yet... I ask again... are they here so I can feel them? She keeps going through the phone at a snail's pace, through each color and size. I finally get impatient and pull my phone out, open the REI app, put in the location, find the pants online and find out they aren't even in stock at the store. Needless to say I wasted a decent amount of time asking a question that I should have just known to look up myself. Lesson learned. But I wasn't impressed at all with the staffs knowledge of their own products. I commented about the REI Taureen pants being discontinued and how disappointed I was and was trying to find a replacement. I received no recommendations and felt as if the employee was a bit out of place. I guess I expect a bit more from someone working at a recreational sports store. read more

Poor customer service. Was waiting for someone to help us try on boots. One staff member was there helping another couple. Ignored us and finally asked him for help. He told us to wait... In fact as we stood on the side, another staff memeber asked that first couple again if they needed help. A few minutes went by and finally I asked another staff memeber who helped us. Gave us boots to try and then left. No one else came back to check on us again, ask if we needed another size. Needless to say, will be taking my $$ somewhere else. read more

I usually enjoy coming here, both just to look at all the cool equipment, but also to get some things for my upcoming European trip. I was beyond offended and disappointed with my experience today. It started off great, found a pair of shoes id been looking for and when I asked the gentleman helping me about adapters/converters he was nice enough to walk over to the aisle where they were located as well as explaining some information about it. The specific one I needed was on the shelf so he offered to look upstairs. A woman overheard our conversation and walked out into our conversation stating she wanted the exact same item. When he came down with one, be asked if we were going to fight over it and then asked who's trip was first to justify who would get it. I was shocked, uncomfortable and offended. I wasn't aware that shopping here would require I justify my right to purchase an item, especially considering he was originally helping me. When the lady stated she needed by tomorrow, he replied that I could just buy mine online. I was quite angry and rather than say something un-lady like I walked away. Not to say I don't like helping people, my whole professional career is based on helping people, but it was very awkward being put on the spot and feeling that I had to explain that I have very little free time to prepare for my own trip and that I was using my one day off to run last minute errands. What started as an enjoyable fun experience preparing for my trip turned into a very disappointing one. I plan on addressing this with the manager as well. read more

This location has a lower rating than other stores I've been too. And I can totally understand why. Manager was unclear and difficult at first, but I was able to get some discount for an defective Vasque boot. Come to think if it, I probably should have gotten the full refund, but I felt guilty standing my ground and raising a fuss, and settled for 50% refund. Dumb. The jerk was the dude working in foot care section. He explained to me that the midsole from the boot I had were defective and had problems. I asked him to come with me to tell the manager exactly what he just said, because they were refusing to give me a refund. He kept refusing me saying he isn't customer service and he had other people to help. I told the manager everything he said. Her original reply was "oh he's new to this store". I don't care if he's new or old! He's giving conflicting information from what you just told me! She was frustrated with me and consented to give me a refund. Again, I should have accepted a full refund for the defective, crap boots I had. Which by the way, was a replacement because a similar thing happened to the previous pair of the same brand I owned. Nice looking and huge location, but a crap experience. 2 stars is generous. read more

I have been to many REI stores throughout California. Customer service and returns have been effortless. That is the main reason I travel an hour to purchase items at REI rather than purchase closer to home. The REI Sacramento customer service today was horrible! The staff at the bike shop were not interested in helping me learn to install a new bike rack and the staff at the RETURN department had terrible attitudes and acted annoyed when I was returning a product. I would not recommend buying from this REI. I have had great experiences at the REI stores in Santa Rosa, San Francisco, Fresno, and Texas! read more

One of the best stores in the area with the best return-policy in the world. It's a huge store, so employees can't be expected to be in every corner at any given moment, but if you ask a cashier or customer service to page someone they will be there shortly. They carry a huge selection of name-brand outdoor items at competitive prices: these are not discount, no-name-disposable items like you find at walmart; these are top of the line, high quality items and the price reflects that. It's refreshing to find a company (a co-op, no less) that stands behind their products 100%. And their sales are AWESOME. Especially the used-gear sales. read more

I was just at this Sacramento REI. I was hoping to purchase two bicycles and all the necessary equipment. My husband and I were in the bike / kayak area for about 12 minutes. Nobody approached us to ask if we needed help and we couldn't see any employees. This has happened before with other REIs. Perhaps the company needs to hire more staff. Staff trainings could encourage greetings and being aware of potential customers. I think this will probably be the last time we make the effort to visit an REI. read more
