I was super excited when I saw this place on 8th Avenue. The location is convenient, and the space is very nicely decorated. It's a cheap massage place, so keep that in mind. You're getting more than what you pay for, but if you want some upscale massage, this is not the place for you. I had a wonderful massage from Jenny. She was friendly, professional, and very thorough. I have a lot of knots in my back and shoulder that are tough to get out (I leave a lot of massage places feeling the same as I did when I came in) but she did it. The massage very clearly targeted my needs, and was not a generic autopilot massage. I did the check in deal for a free extra fifteen minutes on top of the hour massage. I generally don't even bother going to get massages anymore because I can never find a massage therapist deep enough who actually knows what they are doing, but I was pleasantly surprised here! They start you out with a warm foot soak and a complimentary 15 minute foot massage, then take you to their massage room. It was very clean, but there are two massage tables in the room separated by two curtains. I had Jay. He offered me Swedish or Deep Tissue (which I had a feeling would be good based off his pressure on the foot massage) and I took it. No oil, just stretching and pressure points. He is AMAZING and he's the type who will really get into your knots with his fingers. He will go as deep as you want until you tell him to use less pressure. This has never been done to me before! Absolutely wonderful. He spoke English very well and understood even more, so there was no confusion or language barrier and he was very communicative and aware of my comfort level. I needed a ton of work, so he gave me extra time, complimentary. I will most definitely be going back. Really wonderful little place! read more

After around 8 years with my massage therapist, he dumped me after a two year hiatus during Covid. So, I decided to go back to the original source where I found him (Renew on 8th Street), after multiple attempts to find a good deep-tissue massage locally where I live ( Stamford, CT.). During the search, I found out that Leo opened another place in Chelsea which is much more convenient for me. There I found Paul. I am so happy with him, especially since I thought I could never adequately replace my original therapist. Paul really knows how to give a GREAT deep tissue massage. He uses techniques I had never felt before. Somehow, he manages to roll his arm across tissue at the same time as using his elbow to work joints and connective tissue. The overall sensation is strong but blissful. He has impeccable judgement on amount of pressure and is VERY communicative when he suspects there might me an issue. He listens and watches very closely. I did not anticipate that loosing my long-time therapist would actually work out better for me in the long run (sorry James - but you dissed me!). If you're looking for a nice, quiet, beautiful spa, this isn't your place. But it's only $39/hr and gets the job done. Renewing Spa is on the second floor of an old apartment. The whole place is kind of cramped, from the waiting area (where someone was getting their feet worked on) to inside the rooms (where there's little room for the masseur to walk around). They have a laundry basket under the massage table for you to put your clothes in. My friend and I wanted separate rooms, but they only had a curtain-partitioned room available. We booked an appointment at 3:30pm for 4:30pm on a Saturday. The receptionist lady was very nice. Their website lists hour-long body work and foot reflexology for $39 and $27, respectively, but you can do shorter sessions as well. I did the hour long body work. They don't ask you if you have any requests or problem areas or any such things beforehand. The massage itself though was enjoyable and relaxing. The hour flew by, and I was bummed when it was up. Was just hoping it'd wow me a little more. Overall a positive experience. read more

This hurt more than deep tissue massage or any sport massage I have experienced. The Chinese tuina definitely do wonder to all my tight knots and ache all over my body. I enjoyed the body massage alot & it fixed my problem, just have to endure the pain during the massage, it's all worth it! The foot massage is good too but too bad the seats are located right by the entry so it is noisy and disturbing with people coming and going, the phone ringing frequently and the alarms going off in different rooms as their massage time is up. So I cannot totally relax while I was getting the foot massage. If you intend to do body and foot massage, tell them when you are making the reservation that you want the foot massage in the room as well right after your body massage so you won't have to sit outside. Came here for a foot massage after walking many miles throughout NYC. Only drawback is that the foot massage took place right near the front desk. Wish it was in a more private area. Loved it! It's NOT a SPA, so obviously one cannot expect the luxury atmosphere of one, but one a frigid February night, they had the heat on blast, it was cozy and snug. Compared to other cheap Asian massage places (aka: rude service, skimping on time, fee on using credit cards etc), Renewing Spa did none of this. They greeted me politely over the phone and in person, offered me tea, water, and did a full 60 minutes reflexology massage, timer and everything. There are a few off things: an employee came and randomly sat in the chair next to me (1 of only 2) in the reflexology room and just silently browsed her ipad, my masseuse didn't have a great technique for reflexology and didn't hit the spots that make your mind and body melt and he stood smiling over me as I paid and tipped, which I always disapprove of. Regardless, I tipped 25% and gave 5 stars because the price absolutely has to be factored in here. Nowhere can you find a perfectly decent, full 60 min, relaxing foot massage for $24!!! Full body is $40 AND they let you mix and match services! (you can do 30 min feet and 30 min body). I left there warm and cozy and the pain in my feet from this awful NY weather was substantially decreased. I would definitely return for a full body massage. No need to repeat what all the other reviews have mentioned about the bare bones nature of this "spa". I personally didn't mind the lack of sound proofing or luxe amenities. The only other massage I've ever had before coming here was at the SLS hotel in Los Angeles; needless to say this was a completely different experience but I think I actually felt more at ease at Renewing Spa! My masseuse was very thorough, and she paid attention to the areas where I told her I had the most tension. My absolute favorite part of the massage was the hot stone portion. I was looking forward to it after reading about it in the reviews and kept waiting for it to happen, but unfortunately it came at the very end and only lasted for less than 5 minutes. The hot stones felt amazing so I really wish they would do this in the beginning to get your muscles warm and loosened up, and have it last longer than a mere few minutes. I left feeling renewed (HA) and literally like I was walking on air. The tension in my neck and shoulders had been eased after just one session, but I would definitely come back for maintenance work and request a longer hot stone portion. read more

Came with a friend and we both had a good massage here. The staff are very nice and unlike some other Asian places, there is no difficulty communicating with them at all. With the current promotion we got 1 hour back massage with free 15min foot below $40 before tax and tip! I just wish they could target the specific positions on the feet more rather than just mostly rubbing the big areas, although I still sweat a little. The back massage was really good and better than what I expected; the strength, positions and tempo are all good, but it would be great if they can improve on the last bit of details (sometimes you just feel like there is a tidbit of something lacking at the finishing of each gesture that can elevate the experience -- either adding more strength to emphasize the ending of each gesture or taking on an adjacent spot). The Spa are located on the 2nd floor of a small building in Chelsea, which is close to my office and should be convenient for many people. It has simple decor and several rooms, with the space in each room separated by curtains -- not a problem for me at all. A big plus is that this place is very clean and tidy throughout. Amazing. Could not believe what I was getting for $39. Sofia was very warm, friendly, and skilled with her balance of pressure and gentle, soothing touches. I have incredibly tense shoulders and calves and massaging them with any significant amount of pressure usually hurts like hell, but she found a way to make it both enjoyable and effective. For $39 you really do get a full body treatment - back, shoulders, limbs, some hot stone treatment on your back, a face massage, and a foot rub. Sofia was attentive and took the time to finish everything with care even as the timer was going off. It's a less frills-y kind of place - none of the fancy decor that you see in hotel spas - but I don't really see the value in all that to be honest - it's not like you get to take the fancy decor home with you or anything. You simply can't beat the value you get here. The massage is still done in a private room and everything is clean and comfortable. A 20% tip brings the total up to $47, and I was more than happy to round up to $50. Still absolutely worth it. You have to give this place a try. read more

About a month ago I was suffering from pain near the back of my left shoulder and that side of the neck for about a week before I came here. I knew it resulted from a night's sleep in a bad position. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive but legitimate massage place that would get rid of the pain. I don't recall paying for a massage in my life before. It was a Thursday mid-afternoon that I stopped in here around 3:30pm. I was asked what kind of service I wanted. I told the person I wanted a 30 minute massage. I was asked if I wanted a massage therapist of a particular sex. I requested a male but they apparently were not available. That was relayed to me about 5 minutes after I asked while I waited. I said ok. I was escorted to a dimly lit room with candles and soft music playing. I was told to take off everything but my underwear. My massage therapist immediately got to work after a brief break which allowed me to undress.. While I was stripping down, I noticed a sign on the wall that indicated "no hanky panky". My massage therapist immediately got to work when she came in. I let her know that I was having pain in my left shoulder and that side of my neck. She gave me a very effective and relaxing massage but there was a lot of pressure applied effectively. Toward the end of the massage she focused on the areas I mentioned. I couldn't tell if they gave me the extra 10 minutes advertised because I couldn't really check the time when she started. When she was finished she let me know. She left and so I got dressed. I left the room and went back to the front where I was given my bill. I paid with my card including a decent tip. read more

Have been here many times. It's hit or miss. On this particular occasion it was a very big miss. Had a massage without the masseuse using her hands once. I was stepped on for 80% of the massage and then 20% of it she drove her elbow into odd spots of my body, which was extremely unpleasant. To make it an even worse experience, for some reason I was in a room with a complete stranger next to me getting a massage, there was no divider. My masseuse was talking to the other masseuse during my session and there was no divider between us. Very odd. Horrible and not going back. Couldn't even speak to a manager because when I paid another masseuse rang me up and she barely spoke English.
