So where do I start. The massage sucks and they are very racist. Me and my partner went in today for a massage after some decent reviews hoping to get a reflexology. And I could have saved myself the trouble. They didn't even massage my arms let alone my legs or feet. She focused on my back and didn't ask me how much pressure I needed. I was visiting the city and needed a massage to ease the stress. When we finished I asked my partner how his massage was and he said it was equally terrible. We paid and was about to leave. The receptionist then told us that we should tip 20%. Which is optional. I told him I wasn't happy with the service. He then told me and my partner that we come al the time and never tip. It's one thing labelling all black people the same. It's another wanting to be tipped for terrible service. I used to like coming here. You can't beat the price. My last massage hurt and my back still hurts from it a day later. I must of told her at least 6 times that she was applying too much pressure. She would lighten up for a few seconds and then go back to applying too much pressure. Her English comprehension was also lacking. I eventually got tired of telling her and just dealt with it hurting. However once she got down to my feet I enjoyed that. The value here is unbeatable. Attentive, sweet staff. They're very accommodating! The massage itself was very thorough and I immediately felt so much relief from my major pain points. Atmosphere is nice, clean, cute. The ambience isn't perfect, and you can hear EVERYTHING, but for $39 an hour, I really can't complain. Important note: fat friendly! Best massage I've ever received!! The best part of the experience was Haley, who was my masseuse. I generally prefer a deep tissue massage, but hate when spas charge extra for it. Haley used just the right amount of pressure (for no extra charge), and relieved all of the pain, tension, and knots in my neck, back, shoulders, and legs. I will certainly be requesting her for my next visit and referring all of my friends to her. The atmosphere was very relaxing and I enjoyed the soft music playing in the background. The table was very comfortable, the towels and sheets seemed clean and sanitary, and the hot stones were a pleasant surprise as well! I take some of the blame but was so fatigued that I just let my person start without conversation. I was surprised and disappointed that he doesn't do massages anymore and that he only works the Frontdesk now. He did try to recommend someone but I wasn't interested. After around 8 years with my massage therapist, he dumped me after a two year hiatus during Covid. So, I decided to go back to the original source where I found him (Renew on 8th Street), after multiple attempts to find a good deep-tissue massage locally where I live ( Stamford, CT.). During the search, I found out that Leo opened another place in Chelsea which is much more convenient for me. There I found Paul. I am so happy with him, especially since I thought I could never adequately replace my original therapist. Paul really knows how to give a GREAT deep tissue massage. He uses techniques I had never felt before. Somehow, he manages to roll his arm across tissue at the same time as using his elbow to work joints and connective tissue. The overall sensation is strong but blissful. He has impeccable judgement on amount of pressure and is VERY communicative when he suspects there might me an issue. He listens and watches very closely. I did not anticipate that loosing my long-time therapist would actually work out better for me in the long run (sorry James - but you dissed me!). If you can get yourself past the buzzer at the barred from door off 8th Ave and up the dark staircase to the second floor, you're in for a transportive, super relaxing experience. Walking through the door, you'll be a bit surprised just how peaceful and pleasant the space is. The front desk staff is incredibly warm, friendly, and accommodating, and the masseuses are nothing short of talented, skilled, and remarkably effective. (Hailey is my girl.) I leave here walking on air (which is difficult to do with double bunions and crepitus, believe me.) Gentle frou-frou, it's not; therapeutic ecstasy, it is. Now, for the clincher: It's 39 freakin' dollars TOTAL for 75 minutes of massage (which I usually divide between back and feet). I went here for the first time the other day, and I'm having mixed feelings. The inside of the place was nice. Dimmed lights, nice music. It had the ambiance of a more expensive spa. The massage itself was ok. For $40 for an hour, it was amazing, but I think I'd rather spend a little more for a better massage. I don't like rough massage, but I feel like even this was too light. It got most of the tension out of my upper back and neck, but I just didn't feel a huge difference after. Although the massage was good, I was totally put off at the end when they asked for an extra $5 tip (over the 18% I had paid) to cover the free 10minute massage that I had a coupon for. I questioned it and said I thought it was free (plus tip). They said that it is free from the spa, but not from the masseuse and that the spa does not pay the masseuse for those 10 mins and it should come from the customer. Whaaaatt???? That's absurd!!! I won't come here again. It's clean and the prices are clearly listed which is good. It's definitely a no frills massage place which is totally fine with me. The rooms aren't really private. There's a small partition wall between you and the person next to you so you can't see them change, but you can hear everything going on next to you. My main reason for not coming back is I booked a foot massage. Usually these happen in a chair but I was lead to a massage table which was weird but fine. I'm used to foot massages hurting but then feeling amazing afterwards. It's been two days and the bottoms of my feet feel bruised. It hurts to walk. I've never had a foot massage where I left feeling way WORSE than I came in. You can get reflexology foot massages in Chinatown for the same price but leave feeling like you're walking on pillows. This location in Chelsea is super convenient, but I'll never come back. Edited to add: The business owner responded to this so I just want to clarify, I know to drink water before and after a massage. I'm also used to massages hurting. I've done Rolfing and other firm pressure massages and my experience has always been that even if it hurts during the massage, it feels better afterwards. I'm fine with experiencing a firm massage if it is effective. I was thrilled when I saw that a spa offering massages, at prices usually reserved for Chinatown, was opening down the street from my work. Since then I've stopped in a few times for a one-hour foot rub, and I have not been disappointed. Everyone has been friendly, professional, and good at what they do. The atmosphere is no frills and a little cramped (where you sit for your foot massage is an arms length away from the reception desk), but I can get past that when I'm paying less than $25 for an hour foot rub. Which leads me to this: I can't believe that some people are complaining about having to give a 20% tip on a highly discounted massage. In NYC 20% is standard and it is the least that you should give to any masseuse for the hard work that they do. There isn't enough money in this world to make me touch your feet! And if they give you extra time for free, be classy enough to throw a few extra bucks their way. Just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean that you should be cheap! read more

First time at a massage place. Didn't realize you had to take ur clothes off. They asked if I had a preference on male or female masseuse. I said no preference. Then a guy comes in and tells me to strip. Ummm. What?. Ohhhh No wonder they asked of I cared. They didn't have anymore female masseuse. I visited Renewing Spa at the recommendation of my coworker and fellow Yelper, Jackie S. She suggested I visit for a good, inexpensive massage after a weekend of bad decisions and debauchery. It was a good call, I'd say! When I made the appointment, they asked if I preferred a man or woman (I don't care), and when I got there, I had some cold water and some of those delicious candies while I waited (about 3 minute wait). David was my guy and he was very good.. he listened to me and followed my lead regarding what was tender and not, and he really got to the root of my aches. I felt quite taken care of, which i think is exactly what we all need sometimes. They were very kind and this was a very good experience.. FYI, there is a sign that says, "Legitimate Business, no Hanky Panky" which made me giggle because I am basically 12 years old. read more

I generally don't even bother going to get massages anymore because I can never find a massage therapist deep enough who actually knows what they are doing, but I was pleasantly surprised here! They start you out with a warm foot soak and a complimentary 15 minute foot massage, then take you to their massage room. It was very clean, but there are two massage tables in the room separated by two curtains. I had Jay. He offered me Swedish or Deep Tissue (which I had a feeling would be good based off his pressure on the foot massage) and I took it. No oil, just stretching and pressure points. He is AMAZING and he's the type who will really get into your knots with his fingers. He will go as deep as you want until you tell him to use less pressure. This has never been done to me before! Absolutely wonderful. He spoke English very well and understood even more, so there was no confusion or language barrier and he was very communicative and aware of my comfort level.
