Had a fluctuating idle issue on an 80s 911. They diagnosed the issue super fast. I brought the car back and they got the work done within a week! $2248.05 to tell me what I thought the problem was in the first place. I brought my 2006 Porsche Cayman S on Monday April 1st because of increased oil consumption and engine light. I paid 182.92 for a diagnosis (Just checking codes.) (What did he look at? What was the process of diagnosis? Did he open the engine cover?) Answer:NO! As indicated in the past I've had oil changes and major service done at Reno Rennsport with no warning of a duct taped crank case hose oil separator issues or IMS or bore scoring. Keep in mind that this car is known for IMS and bore scoring issues. After the mechanics assessment he determined that all I needed were oxygen sensors 4 for $1393.09. When I spoke to the service advisor I mentioned that it sounded more like a symptom not the cause of my issues. The mechanic did not speak to me. I was concerned about the oil consumption. Thursday April 4th I paid another $160 to check for the oil leaks. The technician determined that the oil separator and hose was leaking. (Ten years prior I had the oil separator replace by Porsche of Reno.) He also mentioned that there was light bore scoring. On Thursday 4/9 I brought the car in thinking this was the final solution. Replaced the oil separator and hose. After the parts were installed, during the only test drive the technician determined that the bore scoring was worse than he thought (smoke and knocking under acceleration) and recommended that I should replace or rebuild the engine. The first $182.92 should have made a thorough assessment and test dive instead of gaslighting me thinking that these symptom solutions would be the remedy to the car's issues. I followed the proper repair schedules and stayed with the same shop and they acted like it was the first time they seen the car or the issues that come with it. Reno Rennsport failed to meet my minimal expectations. I feel cheated. After the initial diagnosis if they told me that it was bore scoring I would have been interested in getting my engine rebuilt or replaced. Or sell the car without spending for these unneeded repairs. Now they have lost a customer. read more

I've been taking my 1976 Porsche 911S Targa to Reno Rennsport for normal periodic maintenance (oil and filter changes, minor adjustments and smog inspections) for several years. Finally decided to do a complete engine rebuild and transmission tune up after over 167K miles. The original 2.7 liter engine was leaking oil badly and had lost its zip. The release (throw-out) bearing in the tranny was making a lot of squealing noise when engaged and the clutch travel was much greater than in the past. Past owners had replaced the heat exchanger with headers thus making the heater nonfunctional. The brakes, front and rear needed work and the front struts and rear shocks were worn. They replaced all worn parts like the clutch cable, tie rods, sway bar bushings, CV boot, brake lines and master brake cylinder, shift bushings, and the exhaust-muffler assembly. Restored the heater function. New front oil cooler kit was installed to improve engine oil cooling and a faulty brake light switch was replaced. They also fixed a broken driver's side seat release that had prevented the tilting of the seat back forward for access to the rear compartment. The engine rebuild included cleaning all parts, rock arm reconditioning, valve job, replacing the valve guides, resurfacing the cylinder heads, reconditioning the connecting rods and bushings, installing stud inserts, realigning bore to standard, machining cylinder and transmission mount inserts, polish crankshaft, cleaning the oil squirters, replace oil plugs and cleaning the engine case. New synchros and release bearing for the transmission. Plus new shifter bushings and adjusted shifter. Wheel alignment and smog testing completed the work. I was not in a rush to get the car back and had told Reno Rennsport to take the time to do the job right. The work took about 3 months as some of the tasks had to be sent out to a third party and there was wait time for some parts. I am extremely pleased with the work performed by John Trautwein and the technicians at Reno Rennsport. They kept me informed all along the way and invited me to see the engine work as they proceeded. I valued their expert consultation and advice about the details of the rebuild. Carla and Forrest tended to the office/business side of the process and were great to work with. The performance of my 911S is fantastic, the best acceleration, handling and shifting since I first took ownership of the vehicle nearly 17 years ago (I'm the third owner). Although not a concours museum piece, the car had always looked good on the street and now performs even better. Looking forward to many more years of exciting road trips. What can I say? I was recommended to about four different auto mechanics all over Sparks. I've only been up here for less than three weeks, so I'm a prime customer for swindling. The 3rd mechanic I was referred to didn't do German cars, so he referred me to Rennsport. Forest took my call early afternoon on a Friday. They aren't open on Saturdays, so I thought they probably couldn't see me until Monday. I was delightfully wrong! Forest asked if I could make it in within a couple of hours? Um...YEAH! Forest saw me right away and checked my car out, tested it and I was on my way within less than an hour! Friendly service, free wifi, making a nervous new girl in town feel welcome. What is there not to like about this shop!! Ken is great at communicating about what is going on with your car. He is very knowledgable and friendly. His eagerness to help is outstanding. He calls to give up to date information on what is being completed on your car and always confirms if any additional work is needed so there are no surprises when you pick the car up. They use true OEM BMW parts at great prices often far less then the dealership charges. Chris and John do the best work in town. They use the top of the line diagnostic software that often out does what the dealership uses. My LCM went out on my car the dealer wanted to put a new computer in but RennSport was able to reset the software and it works perfectly for far less then what I was originally quoted. I can't thank you guys enough for keeping all my cars on the road!! In short this is the only shop I use now I am very picky about my cars and this shop has done nothing but exceed my expectations. I have three BMWs and they can handle everything from a simple oil change to rebuilding a entire engine. Have been to 2 other Porsche places and been treated like a turd. I heard these guys have a great reputation so I made the 2 hour drive from the north to explore. The owner greeted me and was really professional throughout the inspection. I've had a bad alignment, wheels pulling hard left when wheel is turned to the right, and a knocking in the engine for months. Sounds awful and annoying. Anyways, back to the shop, they did a free evaluation and test drive to hear the noise. Something the other places didn't explore and didn't believe me because the noise comes and goes. The head mechanic gave the car hell and knew how to handle my car like his own to find the noise. He was pulling some serious G's as we did donuts in the parking lot. I was very impressed. I took my BMW (they also service other German makes) here for some basic maintenance, and felt well-cared for by the staff here. Duck (don't ask, I didn't) who runs the front office was very clear about making sure I understood the estimate, and they got my permission before doing any work -- I like a place that does not surprise me with "extras" when the bill comes. Their shop is spotlessly clean, from the bathrooms to the waiting area to the service bay, which inspires confidence. They have free wi-fi if you want to hang out and wait, or they might be able to give you a ride someplace if it's close. I was very favorably impressed with their professionalism and their commitment to helping me understand what needed to be done to the car. They have a customer for life in me. read more

While on a family vacation near Lake Tahoe, I opted to purchase a BMW X5 in Reno as I needed to tow a trailer on the return trip. I dropped the car off at Reno Rennsport to have minor maintenance repairs and an oil change performed before departure. When I picked up the car the evening before a return trip of 800 miles to Phoenix, Arizona, I was informed by the owner, John Trautwein, that I may want to consider having some additional issues addressed. While I am not an expert on cars by any standard or measure, he explained the problem and showed me considerable evidence of an imminent water pump failure. He actually said he could not in good conscience send me and my two young children across the Nevada desert under the circumstances of what he discovered. Understanding that I had to depart Reno the next morning, he insisted on performing the repairs himself (and fortunately he had all the parts in stock) and we left his shop at 9:30pm (4 hours after their closing time) that same evening after settling up the invoice for a fraction of what he _could_ have charged a desperate man almost a thousand miles from home. I am not a regular customer of Reno Rennsport and have never had a vehicle serviced by their shop (and it is unlikely I will ever have to have a car serviced there again, as I live 800 miles away). Regardless, I suspect a lesser technician may have mentioned it to the customer and sent them on their way in lieu of missing dinner with their family ... but thankfully, not John Trautwein, who has worked at this shop for over 10 years, prior to the purchase by the co-owner, Brian Lowder (I believe it used to be Bob's BMW, which serviced many BMWs in Reno over the years). It's my understanding there are several Porsche & BMW owners whose cars are maintained by this shop and I can say they exceeded my expectations beyond measure. I made an appointment, which took a month, to bring my 1986 Porsche 928s into this shop to have some issues fixed. After having the car for 1 month and with a bill nearing $1800 the car was returned to me running as poorly as when I dropped it off. On top of what was already being charged to my bill Ricky wanted to charge an additional $1900. Please be aware of misleading quotes and false claims of work performed. I thought that the manager, Ricky who is not the owner, had some experience with Porsche. Looks like he came from a Japanese car dealership before working for RennSport. Very disappointed. read more

I have been working with Rennsport over the last year on several vehicles (BMW, Mini, Volvo) and have had superb service. Sonny is the BMW specialist and I would not trust my BMW/Mini in anyone else's hands. I also know several Porsche track enthusiasts who trust them to handle their cars properly. I find it hard to believe any BMW dealership would repair VANOS for $560 (yes Linda- I am looking at you...) as a remanufactured unit costs roughly $900 bucks not including the 5 hours of shop labor. I doubt a dealership would deal with remanufactured units versus new, let alone something like Dr. Vanos..... Regardless, everyone has an opinion, but from a long time enthusiast, Rennsport does it right. read more

BEWARE....these guys are shady and I am not sure they know what they are doing. They quoted me $1200.00 to repair a vanos solenoid on a BMW and said the job would take 12 hours. I went over the hill to the trusted Niello and the job took 1 hour and cost $560.00....You should see the bogus quote they gave me as the BMW dealership was laughing at them as they made up names of parts that don't exist. Turned out not to be anything major, but what was cool, was that they didn't charge me and just said to give a ring when I wanted to take care of it. Having Reno Rennsport locally is the only reason I own a Porsche. They're specialists. They aren't cheap compared to say an independent Honda or Chevy shop. But Porsches and BMWs have a higher cost of ownership, and Rennsport helps lower that gap. I highly recommend anyone thinking of buying a Porsche or BMW have a pre-purchase inspection done through Rennsport. You'll feel a lot more confident knowing exactly what is wrong with your car, plus it helps from a price negotiation point to be able to show exactly what is wrong with a car and how much it would cost to fix. I'm almost tempted to give a bad review to scare people away as they can get quite busy at times... :) read more

These guys worked on my Mom's beemers so I took my M5 there several times for servicing. I've had a lot of nice cars over the years and been told a lot of stories about what I needed to get done from the various mechanics where I've lived. I feel that Eric, Ryan and his crew are pretty straight up guys, honest. They also helped me out in a pinch when my coolant tank blew up in my garage...guys came out to my house and cleaned the garage floor before taking my BMW to the shop to fix...who does stuff like that anymore? I've been going to Reno RennSport for the past two years, after the previous shop I went to got a new owner and seemed to go downhill. So far? Pretty good, in my opinion. Obviously, German engineering is synonymous with "prepare to pay with the first born and your kidney," but I've found my experience with Reno RennSport to be great overall. They let me know well in advance whether a repair is going to get painful and costly -- or, on the opposite spectrum, if I can just hold off and wait on an item. Duck is a pretty honest guy, and when I have technical questions or want to know more about what's going on, he's happy to fill me in, or even take me out to the car to show me. As a chick, I've worked pretty hard to know my car reasonably well, but it's nice to have a shop respect you and not be condescending about car mechanics just because you're a lady. Now, I have to give the shop four instead of five stars because they have goofed on a few things. Thankfully, they were minor; first, Rennsport attempted a jerry-rig on my windshield wiper reservoir, because I am cheap and did not want to sell my kidney for the thing. Unfortunately, the first modified band-aid they tried to use failed, and my reservoir leaked terribly. The second time they got it right. The second thing is more nit-picky, but I went in for an oil change, and the mechanics didn't reset the oil guage. I tried to reset it on my own but kinda failed, so brought it up to them when I came in for a seat repair and they reset everything without a fuss/price. The above is honestly my only nitpick: sometimes, the guys seem to miss the little stuff. Otherwise? I respect this shop and will continue to go back for work on my Bimmer. read more

These guys saved my a-- when I was up in Tahoe in my Porsche Boxster, and it started acting flaky--headlights wouldn't work, fan was dead, and sometimes I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. Turns out it needed a new ignition switch (a common malady of the Boxster), which they diagnosed over the phone. I called them on a Friday at 1:30, and they had it fixed by 4:30. With a smile! And before they let me off the phone, they checked both that the mechanic had time to do it, and that they had the part in stock. Very efficient, thoughtful and thorough! And VERY reasonable prices compared to the Porsche dealer. read more

The first time I called and explained the problems my car had, the mechanic was very helpful, Brian I think, and I was encouraged to ask them to work on it. The second time I called a different mechanic there said to bring it in, we scheduled a day and a part to have on hand. I called the day before and now that mechanic doesn't know who I am, what my car needs, and has no time to work on my car the scheduled day and blows me off. I don't think I've ever been informed so clearly that a shop doesn't want my business. read more
