    911S Targa @ Rainbow Bridge
    Brian S.

I've been taking my 1976 Porsche 911S Targa to Reno Rennsport for normal periodic maintenance (oil and filter changes, minor adjustments and smog inspections) for several years. Finally decided to do a complete engine rebuild and transmission tune up after over 167K miles. The original 2.7 liter engine was leaking oil badly and had lost its zip. The release (throw-out) bearing in the tranny was making a lot of squealing noise when engaged and the clutch travel was much greater than in the past. Past owners had replaced the heat exchanger with headers thus making the heater nonfunctional. The brakes, front and rear needed work and the front struts and rear shocks were worn. They replaced all worn parts like the clutch cable, tie rods, sway bar bushings, CV boot, brake lines and master brake cylinder, shift bushings, and the exhaust-muffler assembly. Restored the heater function. New front oil cooler kit was installed to improve engine oil cooling and a faulty brake light switch was replaced. They also fixed a broken driver's side seat release that had prevented the tilting of the seat back forward for access to the rear compartment. The engine rebuild included cleaning all parts, rock arm reconditioning, valve job, replacing the valve guides, resurfacing the cylinder heads, reconditioning the connecting rods and bushings, installing stud inserts, realigning bore to standard, machining cylinder and transmission mount inserts, polish crankshaft, cleaning the oil squirters, replace oil plugs and cleaning the engine case. New synchros and release bearing for the transmission. Plus new shifter bushings and adjusted shifter. Wheel alignment and smog testing completed the work. I was not in a rush to get the car back and had told Reno Rennsport to take the time to do the job right. The work took about 3 months as some of the tasks had to be sent out to a third party and there was wait time for some parts. I am extremely pleased with the work performed by John Trautwein and the technicians at Reno Rennsport. They kept me informed all along the way and invited me to see the engine work as they proceeded. I valued their expert consultation and advice about the details of the rebuild. Carla and Forrest tended to the office/business side of the process and were great to work with. The performance of my 911S is fantastic, the best acceleration, handling and shifting since I first took ownership of the vehicle nearly 17 years ago (I'm the third owner). Although not a concours museum piece, the car had always looked good on the street and now performs even better. Looking forward to many more years of exciting road trips. Thanks Reno Rennsport for an outstanding restoration and performance enhancement.

We dreamt the vehicle we are building together and I was helped along the way making my novice ideas into sensational one of a kind ones then materialized them. With their 3D capabilities, they also showed me parts and pieces on their computer first before we did anything that was semi permanent. Even when some of my ideas didn't work great, Harrison and Kyle were quick to figure out solutions on the fly and make things look like they were right the first time. With the current project at a stand still, they also helped me refigure one of my more recent builds by adding air suspension with a management system, as well as completed odds and ends the last guys didn't do. In the automotive world, most don't like working on someone else's projects but being as how I explained I knew they were working on someone else's work, we agreed to tear out all the bad and then they could put their name on the project which worked out great. As it sits now; I'm a life long friend of theirs weather I build another car or not. They check in almost daily and bring a shop that charges by the hour, it's nice to hear at the end of the day where time was spent and what my bill would be for each day. I'd recommend these guys to anyone knowing they are on the up and coming. I am very fortunate to be one of their big build clients. Check out their IG @illegalspeedshop to see what they are doing for me.

Great advocate for the classic car community in northern Nevada. I recommend them for your projectread more

I have never been treated so poorly as I was at AL's Rod & Custom by the owner Jason…read more I spoke to the owner Jason regarding repairing my classic car (1968 Camaro) and was upfront about the damage as well as that this would be an insurance claim. He stated he was uneasy about working with insurance companies but still had me tow the car to his shop so it could sit for more than a week to get a phone call stating that he isn't going to look at the car or work on is due to a case of phone tag with the insurance adjuster. (For reference, I called his shop 4 times and hade to leave a message on two occasions, so it seem a little hypocritical to state that when you call no one answers). So fast forward a couple days, I go and talk with Jason again and tell him that I am willing to pay for the repairs and deal with the insurance company myself to have him blow me off and tell me he had filled my spot with another car and he is passing on the job because he "has a bad feel about me". Its hard to believe that he could have had a bad feeling about me as we had very little interaction up to this point. But after more discussions he said he would think about it and get back to me early next week as to a final answer to if he would work on my car or not. A week has come and gone with no communication from the "reputable" business owner. I guess he can't even hold up to his word to give me a courtesy call. All I received from Al's Rod & Custom was a waste of my time. I would not recommend working with Jason, especially if you need insurance work done.
