This used to be the old Jonathan's Diner location and I am SO IMPRESSED with how the place looks since Restaurant Beatrice took over. The place looks amazing, service is phenomenal and food is great. A taste of New Orleans in Dallas! My favorites: gumbo, fried chicken and their praline syrup used for the waffles and French toast. I've been multiple times for brunch so will definitely be back to check out dinner at some point. I just wish they had more options and brought the food and drinks out a tad bit faster. Had brunch here. The quality and presentation of the food is great- service was friendly and attentive, the bar was slow. The drink menu is a little pretentious (even in 2023 mimosa shouldn't be $15 under any circumstances). Had The Breakfast Beatrice ($18) was served with eggs your way, grilled andouille sausage, a house-made biscuit and house-made jam with potato cracklins. The andouille sausage has nice snap and a kick of spice that brings you back to the bayou. The biscuits are buttery. The potato cracklins are whole smashed double-fried potatoes with a crunchy and soft. The flavors were fantastic and worked so well together. This was a great find! The food was amazing and the atmosphere was definitely Louisiana style! It's really hard to find good of creole food outside of New Orleans in the Metroplex. What a brunch gem serving Cajun style cuisine. Excellent food like the andouille sausage Benedict. Biscuit was so soft, served with peppered cream, and homemade andouille sausage. Love love! Also another must try is the cornbread. Who would have thought to fry cornbread? It is almost like hush puppies but cornbread inside. So so addictive! Served with butter. Beet salad was one of the best I've had. Make sure to save room for dessert. Desserts are so good here! We had the hummingbird cake. It was Texas size! Chef even came out to speak with us. I wish I had snapped a photo of my meal. I didn't order an appetizer as I wanted to go straight into the appetizer. I was disappointed to find out the menu changes and I had originally came in for the Chicken and Waffles and another entree I saw on Yelp but I still made the best of it. The menu is fairly small and quaint but still many great choices to choose from. I ordered the three piece dark chicken and added a side of Mac n cheese. It came with a house made homemade dinner roll and a special jam. My Mac and cheese was cooked to perfection and I enjoyed the texture of it. I bit into my fried chicken and the breading was very air and crunchy. The chicken was extremely moist. My friends order the same entree but added the grits. The grits seemed to be grainy and undercooked. I ended up sending it back. The waitress didn't seem to be receptive to the feedback on how to properly prepare the side. Oh this is such a gem of a find! It's liek a little house restaurant in oak cliff. The ambiance is really cute and quaint. The drinks were fun- I got the king's cup. It really tasted like king's cake! The food was so so good. Def get the potato cracklins. My husband got the Cajun French toast which he loved. He said usually French toast is way too sweet and he gets tired of it half way through, but this dish he loved it and finished it all. I got the crawfish omelette. I would have never thought to put celery in an omelette but it was really so good and a nice balance the crawfish in the dish were big fat and juicy too. Not sure how they're in business since we've been turned away twice now both times with a nearly empty restaurant. We went one time and really enjoyed our brunch but haven't been able to go back. This is a really cute restaurant and very intimate; the tables are close together but it gives the feeling of being hosted in someone's home. The staff was really nice, but service was EXTREMELY slow, and for there to only be about 6 parties at the time, that was a little weird. Menu wise, my favorites were the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Pecan Praline Bread Pudding. The Green Gumbo was also pretty tasty! The Shrimp and Grits and the Vegan Cassoulet were fine, but I felt like they were missing that OOMPH seasoning wise; they were kind of bland, just on the precipice of having the right spice but not quite making it over the finish line. My experience at Restaurant Beatrice blew me away. First of all, the story of local and seasonal sourcing of ingredients is very evident here. The food was the freshest tasting food I've had in a long time . The cocktail offerings are incredible and well executed. Finally, the stories built into the food are a stand out! Trust me, there is no other fine dining experience like Restaurant Beatrice in ALL of Dallas. Chef Terrence Jenkins is a new culinary star! So glad he and Michelle Carpenter are sharing their talents with this type of food experience. Bottom line is their food is full of flavor and exceptionally executed. Very unaccommodating to group diners. We were a table of five. We knew ahead of time that they would only take 2 credit cards max per table. Some of us brought cash to pay the 2 people that were paying by credit card. The restaurant refused to break a $10 bill of us. I don't know what the big deal is. They claimed they didn't have cash, yet after 15 minutes of us trying to figure out how to split our bill, they came up with the change. By then we already figured it out. Server was not knowledgeable with the menu. He could not understand his at all. He charged us $2 each for hot sauce!!! At a Cajun restaurant, you would think hot sauce should come with the food. The food was flavorless. One person had shrimp and grits. She said 2 of the shrimps were bad. She couldn't eat them. My seafood gumbo had no seafood. The only thing that was good was the eggrolls. Just a bad taste in my mouth all around, which is a shame. When I came more than a year, the staff was wonderful and the chef came out and talked to us. The space is a converted house and the inside is charming; you need a reservation to sit inside but outside and bar space are for walk ins. We ate from the regular menu and thought the fried green tomatoes and the chicken & waffles were both excellent. The praline syrup was a too sugary for me but I'm sure many love it. Honestly, don't fall for the hype. Based on the buzz we came in expecting to be wowed, but we left feeling "meh". The food is okay, but most items (notably the mains) are priced about twice as high as they felt worth considering the simple components of the dishes and relatively small portion sizes. I could come closer accepting the prices if the service had been stellar, or perhaps if the experience had been elevated in some way. For example, a basket of their house-baked bread items could have been provided as a complimentary starter like many other restaurants at this price point (and lower). But unfortunately that was not the case: The bread basket was a $14 side, and our server was unable to offer any useful information about the dinner menu or portion sizes, beyond informing us that the chicken was the most popular item and "deservedly so". About that chicken: Yes, the chicken itself was good. Nothing made it particularly memorable but it was nicely seasoned throughout with a flavorful, crunchy crust. However - it was just two thighs and a drumstick, with no included side other than a salty little biscuit and some extremely sweet pickled items meant to accompany the chicken - all for $23. Sorry, but even in 2023 there is simply no world in which two thighs, a drumstick, a biscuit, and some pickles are worth $23. The predominant flavor of some other savory dishes we tried was salt. Don't get me wrong: I like plenty of salt, but for a few items - namely the gumbo and red beans & rice, salt was the only thing I could really taste. In stark contrast to this was the macaroni and cheese, which tasted primarily of milk and flour with the only cheese flavor coming from the few shreds broiled on top. A few positive notes: - The fried crawfish balls appetizer was really good - well-presented, nicely seasoned, and we could actually taste all components of the dish. - The cocktails we had were also quite good, but also quite expensive at $15-17 each. - The praline bread pudding dessert was excellent, and one of the only items (next to those crawfish balls) that came close to feeling worth its $15 price tag. To sum it up: Nothing we had was outright bad, and at a 25-50% lower price point this restaurant would've gotten a 4/5 from me. But in consideration of the overall basic food and service we received in exchange for the prices we paid, I'm struggling to go higher than 2.5/5. read more

I have to admit, this Oak Cliff spot wasn't on my radar until I saw that it had been nominated for Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation. I think I secured a reservation for my family literally 10 minutes after the list dropped. Chef-owner Michelle Carpenter, born to a Cajun father and Japanese mother, made a name for herself as head of the only female-led sushi restaurant in Dallas, Zen Sushi in the Bishop Arts district. Beatrice is both an homage to her "mammaw" (grandmother) and an expression of her Cajun heritage. Having married a Louisianian myself, an elevated but faithful exploration of one of the tastiest cuisines in the world sounded right up my alley. The house-like building gives off strong NOLA vibes with a small patio for crawfish boils and a cozy but refined interior outfitted with a casual cocktail bar and fleur-de-lis wallpaper. Our server had a very soothing and casual approach but managed our table with expert precision. You can also tell that the staff cares about the product and culture here. I came in expecting to be blown away, but I confess I was a little let down by our experience. The long and thin "Cajun Fries" (i.e., fried okra) were just alright and arguably over-breaded. They tasted pretty much as you'd expect without much flourish, though the accompanying sauce was tasty. We tried a special Fried Oyster appetizer that came with pickled onions and goat cheese; the flavors here were compelling and the plating was beautiful, but again I found the breading to be overpowering. My main course was the Rabbit Stew with Dumplings, which really channeled the homestyle theme by coming in a white baking dish. The soupy dish was rustic and soul-warming with shredded rabbit, herbs, and scratch-made pasta, but I wouldn't say that it was particularly memorable or something I would want to order again. I also had a few bites of my cousin's Gumbo Yay, which was dark chocolate-colored - just like I like it - with spicy, zesty, and a pervasive seafood-y flavor. The crab was a bit overcooked and stringy, but I think this was probably my favorite bite of the evening. I love the story and vibe of Restaurant Beatrice and their vocal commitment to sustainability, but at the end of the day, I felt at least the plates we tried merited a collective 3.5/5. Where to start?! So many amazing things. This place is worth every penny and every calorie. The grapefruit gin cocktail is refreshing and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Forks were being passed around to try different things. Oyster appetizer on par. Everyone was pleased with their dessert. Cheesecake was light and creamy. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. What a gem of a restaurant! In a city that is inundated with flashy restaurants that leave something to be desired, Restaurant Beatrice is a true breath of fresh air. My husband and I so appreciated how approachable the place is and how it lets the food/experience do the talking for it. As someone who grew up in the Deep South within easy driving distance to New Orleans, I can say this cuisine is as authentic and delicious as any you'll find in NOLA. The raw oysters with pomegranate mignonette are a must to start! We followed it up with gumbo and entrees of crawfish etouffee and pecan-crusted trout with some of the best grits I've ever had. And do not sleep on the bread basket! WOW! The pastry chef hit it out of the park with some of the most mouthwatering biscuits and dinner rolls we've ever tasted. DON'T Get the CRAB BOIL!!!, DONT GET the GRAB BOIL!!! We went to this place based on the recommendation on Yolandas on the go show. That had to be the worst and least ordered food on the menu. Wasnt in a bag, not seasoned, and served on a tray . They OVER BOILED every thing. Or microwaved it . Shrimp was dirty wasn't cleaned, heads on, not devained, (wished I had taken pictures) Andouiue sausage tasted like a bike tire. The only thing that was good was the Fried Green Tomatoes. Not on the menu, but offered. I'm sure the inside food was better and was given better attention. Crab boil is only offered on the patio. The price we paid for what we got was BS. Whatever! Walked in for my 2:30 reservation on Saturday, and my friends are stressed telling me we need to order because the kitchen is closing at 3:00, because it's the restaurant's 2 year anniversary and they've got to get ready for dinner. I asked who accepts a 2:30 reservation when the kitchen closes at 3:00. True enough they badgered us and made us order apps, entrees, etc. quickly and hovered around us the entire time making sure we didn't linger. As we attempted to salvage and enjoy our meal and catch up, a waiter told us we had to leave. This was highly insulting and I was embarrassed, because I wanted to show my friends how wonderful the Oak Cliff neighborhood is. Add to this, the food was TERRIBLE!!! We spent $150 for biscuits they cut in half and slapped some old gravy on. Chargrilled oysters that weren't chargrilled or really cooked, gumbo with rice and roux only-like it was from the bottom of the pot-no seafood, chicken, or sausage to speak of, undercooked fried chicken, etc. No one had cocktails, so this bill was way out of line. If they treat their customers this way, they can get all of the local press and James Beard recognition in the world, I will never spend another dime at one of Michelle Carpenter's restaurants. Her employees-especially the sour-faced woman with the fake friendly demeanor who appeared to be the manager-felt way too comfortable treating us as though we were an imposition. Later, I remembered my first and only time meeting Michelle Carpenter was at her other terrible restaurant Zen Sushi in Oak Cliff. I was with my friend whose husband is a local professional athlete-the entire dinner she never made eye contact or spoke to me. So, maybe you have to be a local celebrity, the press, or the James Beard folks to get the good food they're writing about or be treated as a valued customer. I don't see them celebrating too many anniversaries based on the food and treatment we received. PS-I have been to this restaurant a few times, and have kept coming back because I like to support my neighborhood businesses. And in all fairness, the food has never been great just good and the service always clunky, but this was on a completely different level. read more

I've loved Cajun food since my introduction to it near the French Quarter in New Orleans a few years ago and have been looking for Cajun inspired restaurants wherever I go, and this place exceeded all of my expectations. I arrived here a few minutes before my friends that recommended this place, and sat by the bar and was immediately greeted by staff that were genuinely ecstatic to be there and share their knowledge. Sage was a magician with the drinks as she asked my preferences and customized a drink that immediately excited the senses. Once my friends arrived, I moved to the dining area which has such a cozy and inviting vibe. Elena, Ebony and Chef Terrance made it a point to always check in on us throughout our meal and let me tell you, that truly elevated our experience. I learned so much about the restaurant and even something some would think trivial such as the artwork in the restrooms was so cool! The food was amazing. The catfish, perfectly seasoned with the right amount of crunch and tender middle, the grits, perfection. The chicken, perfectly crunchy on the outside while retaining such a tender and juicy meat inside. This will definitely be a to go spot for me and my group of friends. Also, that hot sauce was made out of something magical because the flavor profile was out of this world. It tasted like it had an andouille sausage base that just played well with everything on the plate. And don't even get me started on the bread pudding! If you have not visited this establishment you're seriously missing out. First, the service was impeccable. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. He provided several suggestions which was great since this was our first time at the restaurant. The food is made to order and it shows. My husband's chicken was crispy and so juicy. My five year old literally ate the chicken to the bone lol. The mac and cheese was phenomenal! The greens and red beans are a must as well. The cocktails were winners too. We celebrated Father's Day here and what a great experience. My Father-in-law is allergic to shellfish and they more than accommodated him. The appetizers were very good. We had the bread basket, charcuterie board, and those of us that aren't allergic to shellfish ate the oysters. We all had different cocktails and they were all very good and unique. Daniel our server and Ramona the manager kept an eye on our table and made sure that there were plenty of options for my Father-in-law to eat. We shared the watermelon salad and the fried green tomato salad. Both were well executed. Dressed perfectly and you can tell they put a lot of thought into their dishes. After visiting the Taste of Oak Cliff I wanted to visit a place on the area on my list. Beatrice was my choice . I called the girls amd we met up for some great drinks and delicious food. The atmosphere was awesome. Sage our waitress was great and attentive. She made our evening even better. I ordered the catch of the day with rice and creamed greens!!! Omg those greens were Heavenly!! My friends ordered the Pastalya they all loved it.
