Apparently Minnasota is known for fried chicken. Who knew. I googled best fried chicken places and drove 30 min to this spot. It had a pretty long wait for a Tuesday but I got seated at the bar right away since I was a party of 1. Surprisingly, the bar tender pointed out that this place is know for the best chicken and the best burgers in Minnasota. So guess what???? I ordered both and it was a great choice in a place with a great atmosphere and a great bar tendered. Super crispy chicken that had me picking up the crumbs. Many recommend to go to Revival for the chicken, but I have to say their burger is my favorite burger in town. Be warned- you will likely have to wait some time for a table. We grabbed a spot at the small bar and avoided the wait. But regardless, Revival is worth the wait. Between two of us we split Tennessee hot chicken (all-white 2pc), a side of mac n cheese, the burger (add the bacon!), and hush puppies. Everything was delicious and this was plenty of food for two people. Staff was friendly and helpful on helping us decide what to get. A few great beer choices as well. This place has great sauces. Highly recommend the brown vinegar based sauce to keep in your fridge and use to make steaks later when your leftover chicken runs out! The chicken is always the best choice with the biscuits, and grits. The hush puppies are dry and we're not our favorite item that we ordered. The only thing is that we did take out, and when I walked into this particular location it was very small. I'm not sure the space is the best compared to the Saint Paul one, which has a better ambiance in my opinion, but the food was great regardless. read more

Got the fried chicken sandwich. It was excellent. From the buttery bun to the crispy chicken and house pickles! Drippy juicy goodness. Also got a side of grits, greens and Mac and cheese. Really bad service the guy with all tattoos on his right arm I believe completely covered . He didn't greet us and said are you ready to order, no smile just took or order and left he wasn't even the one that brought the food out nor checked up on us when we received our food. Sooooo - a friend really wanted to try this place on Saturday night. She got on the list for a table at 6:50 pm and we sat down at 9:45. So when they say it's a 3 hour wait on the weekend that's real. When we sat down I was starving so this may impact my impression. It's good but not worth a 3 hour wait. We started with fried chicken livers. Some of them were perfect but a few pieces were completely under-cooked. Not okay after a 3 hour wait. Next we shared the entree. Mac and cheese, greens and two forms of fried chicken (TN hot and regular). Don't bother with the hot chicken. It's not quite right - spicy and sweet but not as tasty as you'd expect. If you've been to Gus's in Memphis or Macon TN you will be disappointed with this hot chicken. As a matter of fact, just don't bother with the hot chicken at Revival and get the regular chicken. The regular fried chicken was very good for Minneapolis. The greens and Mac and cheese were good too. After three hours and hot chicken that is "meh", go when you don't have to wait. Update - visited again today. So, there was still a wait on Sunday afternoon about 2 pm; however it was only about 30 minutes. Today, we ordered Southern Fried Chicken, collard greens, grits and Mac and cheese. As I mentioned previously, the southern fried chicken did not disappoint! Best friend chicken and southern cooking in the Twin Cities. I'm not a huge fried chicken guy, but theirs is so delicious. The meat is so quality and incredibly juicy while having the right amount of crispy breading. Not over breaded, but just enough. The half bird is more than you need (and I eat a lot) so I recommend the 2pc or sharing a half or whole bird depending upon how many people you have. Or, their chicken and waffles is a great option too. Same chicken, except with the most delicious waffle you've ever eaten on the bottom with a lot of syrup and butter. My goodness, so delicious. Sides wise, I enjoy pretty much everything they have. I was particularly impressed with the collard greens and cheddar biscuits, but I've yet to eat a side that I didn't like. Grits, Mac and cheese, hush puppies, hoppin john, were all tasty. I've only been to the Minneapolis location and I love the vibe. Very small on the corner on Nicollet in South MPLS. Quaint and homey vibe, but always always busy. You pretty much have to get the chicken when you go, but I live close and order their burger from Bite Squad all the time. So if someone really isn't into fried chicken, the burger is amazing. Definitely a top 10 burger in the cities. But again, order the chicken if you go. I'm not a huge southern cooking fan, so it's not a place I go super frequently, but man when I do I always love it. Also... they have the BEST bread and butter pickles. read more

I recently tried veganism and the only thing I miss is revival chicken thigh sandwiches. Seriously, it's the best chicken sandwich. Also the sauces you can add to the chicken really add depth and spice. It's usually pretty busy but for good reason! I wish this location could serve cocktails but zoning laws don't allow it. Tennessee Fried Chicken Juicy chicken, decent breading, but it was barley spicy. Don't quite understand the bread on the bottom. The pickles were pretty good! Fried Green Tomato Salad This was a recommended appetizer from the server. I should have went with something else. The green tomatoes are meatier than regular tomatoes. The breading was super light. It's just like any other salad to me. Won't get it again. Mac & Cheese Surprisingly the highlight of the meal. I loved the crunchy and crumbly top. Expensive but amazing fried chicken. Also the biscuits are heavenly. I have zero issues with the food here. My only issue is that when I ordered online for a pickup order I noticed a 15 and some change service fee. I called the Minneapolis location about this and was told it was a fee of 6% that went to the cooks. The fee was way more than 6% of my order but I did not argue. There was no reason for this charge imho since I was driving to pick it up. Just be honest and raise your prices so you can afford to pay your staff. Don't hide it in a fee. Wow, great fried chicken here. You have a choice of three different styles of frying. I chose the southern style. I am a traditionalist with my fried chicken. I got a half chicken (because the son wanted leftovers to bring home) and the son ordered his favorite, a fried chicken sandwich. We also ordered sides of mac and cheese, mashed potatoes with gravy and pickles. The fried chicken was amazing. It came out piping hot, so be careful with the first bites as you might burn your tongue. The chicken was fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The coating had tons of flavor with lots of nice spices added into the batter. The mac and cheese was very good but surprisingly I preferred the mashed potatoes and gravy. The potatoes were just great. They had nice flavor and texture. The pickles were great too. Lots of nice vinegar and pickled to perfection. Sonny loved his chicken sandwich but it wasn't quite enough to fill him up. It would have easily filled me up though. He is just a big eater. Be prepared to wait if you come here. We arrived late-ish on a Friday night and still had a 45 min wait. I did appreciate their wait list app and how they text you when you are next in line. My partner and I tried Revival yesterday, a Saturday, for a nice midday meal. We figured we would avoid the lunchtime crowds but no, this place was packed, with people waiting outside for their table. We were offered two seats at the small bar and took those instead of waiting. Basically, your choices of food are different kinds of fried chicken, a couple of sandwiches, appetizers and maybe a couple of salads. Decent number of local beer and wine choices. Wished I had taken pics of the food because it was delicious!!! We had the Tennessee hot 1/2 bird with sides of hush puppies and collards. Warning: the greens are sweet, unusual for collars greens, but the rest was wonderful. Tennessee hot is their medium, but I think it's a bit too hot for the average Minnesotan so if that's you, order the southern fried and get some sauce in the side. Give this place a try!! So. I have to take back all my sassy comments about no restaurant is worth that long of a wait. Today I had the most delicious lunch/early dinner ever. Let me preface this by saying I'm not a fan of waiting in a cramped entry nor am I a fan of putting in my name, leaving, and then getting a Nowait notice. I'm a fan of reservations. Today we decided to try going at 3:30 in the afternoon to avoid the waiting chaos. Luckily we were sat quickly. We were told we could only order from the lunch menu. Fine. I'm here. I'm going to see what the big deal is all about. We, two adults and kid, ordered a half of a fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, mac n cheese, and coleslaw. Perfect amount for the three of us. Loved the chicken. Like loooooved the chicken. Wow. Perfectly done. The sauce on the fried green tomatoes was heavenly. I wanted to lick the plate. But I didn't. Because manners matter! Coleslaw was funky but I liked it. The mac and cheese was incredible. I could have eaten more if we weren't sharing it. Place is small. Our service was perfect. I loved everything about our experience. I would definitely go again at an off time. Lunch menu is great. I still think all restaurants should take reservations, but I will say that this place is probably worth the long wait. read more

Holy delicious greasy gut bomb. That's my reaction the morning after having dinner at Revival. I was drawn to Revival because its burger was touted as one of the best new burgers by Mpls Eater, and it advertised gluten free chicken so the girlfriend would be able to enjoy their staple offering. The website and exterior present Revival as an upscale Southern-themed restaurant of the relatively trendy variety. Upon entry, however, we immediately said "Oh, this is it?" before being consumed by the chaos that is Revival's plain, small space at dinner time. I give Revival credit for choosing a theme (Southern) and really going for it. The fried chicken is juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, but it's not a gourmet or high end meal like the price tag would indicate. Fittingly, a group of three wandered into the restaurant and inquired about ordering some chicken for takeout, only to be turned down. I can't blame them for wanting to get the chicken and some sides to go - that's the type of food Revival offers. Delicious but very greasy southern food that you want to take home and have at your own table, or, let's be honest, on your couch in sweatpants while watching Netflix. The service was actually pretty good, but the atmosphere was so chaotic that it was difficult to enjoy the dining experience. The space is so bare bones that it is screaming out for some sort of organization - a booth or two, just something to make it more than just a rectangular box with a bunch of tables, a small bar, and kitchen in one corner. And what's up with the tacky wallpaper near the bar area? My burger was incredibly tasty - I can see why it made Eater's list. It was juicy and full of flavor in a unique way, but I realized a couple of hours later that this deliciousness was due to the copious grease and butter. I wanted to curl up in the fetal position it hit my system so hard. I've had a lot of greasy, buttery burgers in my life, but this one did not sit well. Revival is trying to be two very distinct and conflicting things - a neighborhood Southern style food joint that cranks out delicious staples like fried chicken, and an upscale trendy sit-down restaurant. I think Revival could be successful if it chose one or the other, but definitely not both. The easiest way to do this would be to drop prices and simply go for the neighborhood Southern chicken joint, and offer take out. I can tell Revival wants to be more than that, though, which would require rethinking of the space and making the food truly higher end (keep the taste, just make it less greasy). read more

Half bird was enough for two and some to bring home if you have sides. Minneapolis location is quite busy on the weekends so I suggest coming early. I'll start out by saying that this place has some of the nicest wait staff I've encountered. Our server was very attentive, friendly, and offered great recommendations. I came here with a friend to find out what all the hype was about. As we were seated we kept talking about how excited we were to try the food however my expectation may have been a little too high. During my visit we ordered the funyon style pork rinds, shake and bake pork chops with butter beans and greens, Tennessee hot fried chicken, Mac and cheese, and the chess pie. Of all these my favorite was a chess pie. I loved that it was served with ice cream and tasted like a super soft snickerdoodle. The Tennessee Hot Chicken although well battered and cooked perfectly there was much left to be desired in terms of flavor. I felt as it had just been doused in hot sauce and it was just hot for the heck of it with out any real flavor. I have grown up eating very hot food and this was hot even for me. Shake and Bake Pork Chops: Very good and very tender but not seasoned whatsoever but in combination with the butter beans it tasted great! Mac & Cheese: Good but nothing that stood out Funyon Style Pork Rinds: Good but felt like they were a little under cooked since there were some pieces that were still a little chewy. Food was good. My issue: I was given a 50 minute wait time estimate. My cousin is in town from Vegas and my wife and I wanted to go out for dinner with him. 90 minutes later, we still were not seated. My wife had to leave so she didn't get dinner. We got seated after 100 minutes - double the estimated time. This is not ok. That is a horrible approximation of wait time that cost us our night with an out of town guest. We did not have this much time to wait, and would have gladly found any one of a hundred great minneapolis restaurants to go to instead. Nothing got comp'd either - we ordered 1 app, 3 sides, and an entire chicken (I figured I needed to bring my wife leftovers since it was my idea to go to this restaurant).
