The tortillas had the perfect blend of softness and crunch that is so hard to capture, and the zesty green salsa that came was a perfect balance for the cheese. I also had a great hazelnut latte! Cute place, but a little over-hyped in my opinion. Street parking is hard to find and the neighborhood is a bit sketchy, even in the daytime. Always a wait on weekends and holidays. Food was good, but not great. There are two key things that Rex's has going for it: 1) Freakishly large potions, especially pancakes and burritos. 2) More healthy and veggie options. Otherwise, I don't see what the big deal is. Coffee was very ordinary. Service was a little scattered. I really like good breakfast potatoes, and these were your basic red skins with some Lawry's on them. Meh. My personal rule of thumb is - with so many restaurant options available when traveling, would I return to this image? Yes. Arrived at 7:30am on a Thursday, and the place had many free tables. Sat down immediately and was served right away by a cheerful server. Ordered a mocha with stuffed French Toast and was served promptly. The over-medium eggs were cooked perfectly as ordered. The stuffed squaw bread French Toast was just right, not too sweet. It was a lot of food but I almost finished it. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a BIG smile and a very inviting good morning as if we were regulars. They have a big breakfast menu leaning towards the healthy road ++ which we really liked. We ordered their pancakes and french toast stuffed with cream cheese, banana and blueberries (special), the fruit bowl (popular) and coffee. The pancakes (2) were huge, more than enough for three people. Though it could be a bit fluffier it was still delicious, especially with the maple syrup..YUM! French toast was made with squaw bread, which I thought would be tough, was actually pretty moist and tasty, not too sweet. The filling had just enough cream to berry to banana ratio. Great fruit bowl, visually and appealing ...full of fresh cut banana, pineapple, honeydew, cantaloupe, kiwi, strawberry and grapes,,shheeesh...what a deal!!! I noticed the service was spot on. They would come around every so often to see how you were doing and asked if you needed anything. The dining area is cozy and clean. Turnovers are pretty quick as the staff are always on their toes.They make every attempt to make you feel at home. We will definitely come back...and maybe next time try the lunch menu. read more

The servers were very sweet, and rather busy so they did not check on us too much, my bf prefers to be checked on a lot while as long as I have a full glass and my food is a timely manner I'm fine. I ordered the huevos rexeros which came with black beans, corn tortillas, salsa Verde, eggs and two kinds of cheese. I ordered it with hasbrowns, which also came with pinto beans. The flavors were delicious together and topped it with some sour cream... oh my! The bf ordered a California omelet. He ate the entire thing, with the roasted potatoes. The portions are large and taste like home. His order also came with a bagel which they toasted, buttered and gave cream cheese, sweet cream butter and jelly. All and all the meal was delicious and very reasonably priced. The flavors were rich and enticing. Not sure if the workers are family but one woman in the back east extra Fiesty with the waitresses, more to be on top of their orders as she slammed them out. Definitely wasn't something to expect, but I rather have more food than not enough. This place is great for everyone: family coming into town, before going somewhere, with a group of friends have a "crazy" night. Definitely serves for all crowds. I've only been there once, but I'll definitely be coming back and it's a legit local spot and not one of those restaurants that try to look all modern and fancy, but doesn't put enough into their service and food. So far I came here twice and tried the breakfast wrap and green egg cabrillo. They were both good. Green egg cabrillo is pretty much an eggs Benedict without the hollandaise sauce, which I dislike anyways since it's so creamy. I tried my fiancés Mexican omelette and they added so much more chorizo that it overpowered the eggs and made it too salty. Highly recommend the green egg cabrillo and a fresh bowl of fruit!! I was in pain going back over and over trying to convince myself they are still good. Every time when I'm in town to see my friends in San Pedro, there are probably 3 things I think about the most. 1.) Lobster Fest 2.) Beach 3.) Rex's Cafe. Rex's Cafe serves variety of food but specializes in breakfast and lunch items. The only bad thing I would say about this place is that they close early. There's usually only about 1 or 2 servers working at a time so there is a slight wait for your order to be taken and served. Portions are very large which is a plus. Maybe a little bit too large? As far as the taste goes, it gives you a sense of familiarity of being at home; having the famous breakfast made by your mom/dad/loved one. You know, an omelette, pancakes, waffles, bacon, etc. Very hearty. I would definitely go back here when I get a chance. But for now, it's more exploring other eateries for me. read more

It seemed like a favorite place for the locals. The French Connection was huuuge and delicious!! My latte came in one of their gigantic mugs that was almost as big as my head. I wanted to get their chicken tortilla soup but it ran out as I was being indecisive :/ Great food & great service! Came here for brunch before heading over to the Cirque show (Totem) at the LA Port. Less than 10 minutes from the port. This place is located in residential area so it might be a little hard to find. Just make sure you keep your eyes open for the large "Rex's Café" on the front of the building. There's plenty of street parking if you don't mind parking a little further away. Cafe is not big. It is nicely decorated with an autumn theme, using a color scheme of orange, red, and brown. Being that it's a smaller place, it is pretty cozy and gives you that Sunday laziness feel to it. You know that feeling of sleeping in, going to grab some breakfast, and just hanging around and doing nothing for the rest of the day. Now on with the food. BF ordered the Greek omelette, which has spinach, cheese, and mushrooms. Also came with a bowl of fresh fruit, 2 slices of toast (you have an option of toast, english muffin, or biscuit), butter and jam. The omelette was good, the right amount of flavor, not bland or too salty. Also not overly cooked. The omelette I had at another place a week earlier was really bland so I appreciated that this omelette wasn't like that. The fruit was sweet. I ordered the stuffed french toast. The french toast was stuffed with cream cheese and had a generous amount of fresh strawberry slices piled on top. It was quite good, although the best french toast I had was this small cafe in west LA. Now as I'm writing this I have a craving for it lol. This place is kind of a far drive for the BF, so we probably won't be driving out there just for the food. But if we were in the area, I would come back to try other items on their menu. read more
