This was definitely a pleasant surprise. I've visited this restaurant a couple weekends ago for brunch on a late Saturday afternoon. We were seated within five minutes, but it seems this place gets pretty busy. Definitely a nice diner in the San Pedro area. The menu has a lot of different types of omelettes and breakfast items. I had a really great Omelette with shredded beef in the inside, and avocado and sour cream on top. You had a choice of a tortilla, biscuit, or muffin. I definitely got the tortilla and wrapped my omelette inside of it and it was amazing. Don't forget about the green salsa it was good too! My sister had the fridge toast which was pretty good. I went back outside and a few other groups came by to be seated and they were seated first and then they told us oh, I have tables outside you can sit there. Really poor service. Actually non existent service. After waiting nearly 20 minutes we left before anyone even bothered to take our order. This was after I went and found a waitress (surprisingly difficult given how small the place is) and told her we were waiting to order. Service was poor the last few times we went there but this was the final straw. Also what used to be somewhat charming 'shabby chic' is now just shabby. Definitely in need of a facelift and of staff that actually give a crap. I get the difficulties caused by the pandemic but there's no excuse for how it's gone down hill. It's the kind of place you don't wanna tell anyone about so that you get it all to yourself. Just promise to go when I'm not there. I'm happy the owner has let Maria run the show. She's done great, they haven't stopped being busy. Breakfast lines and waits are common as they're likely short-staffed or experiencing shortages, and people tend to stay a little longer cause it's comfortable. The menu is eclectic and the majority of the things I've tried are all pretty amazing. Favs are the flavored lattes if you're not a regular coffee drinker, machaca, stuffed French toast, and the soups. Believe it or not the burgers with fries and the teriyaki bowl are actually delicious too!!! Heads up the pancakes are a big as the plates. I dined at Rex's Cafe two days in a row. The first day I almost got the California burrito, but decided instead on the turkey bacon melt. Don't do it, it's not good. I honestly couldn't tell if it was turkey or ham. But I also got the black bean chili and a bagel, both of which were delicious. Spinach cooks down like mad. Other menu selections were a great deal - large portions for a good price. I saw the lunch specials going by my table, and for 8 bucks you got a crapload of food. So what I'm sayin' is......be consistent, with the side of spinach. That's all I ordered, in fact, when I found out from my server that I could not get a taco a la carte. I would have had to order the taco plate, with 2 tacos, beans, and rice. I didn't want all those carbs. But I figured I'd order *something* as long as I went to the effort to park and all (free street parking nearby, btw). Anyway, aside from the ridiculously skimpy portion of spinach, the place was pretty overall cool. The decor is charming, like a little cafe oughta be. Service was very friendly and accommodating. When I asked what the sauteed spinach was sauteed IN, and was told canola oil, they also offered to use a different oil if I preferred. Nice. The place is very popular with locals, and it had been recommended to me by two different locals because of the salads. I got a rep for eating green stuff, apparently. The menu has a good selection of sandwiches, wraps, burgers, salads, and breakfasts. Lots of breakfast choices including steel cut oatmeal. And brown rice is offered, thank you. And fresh-squeezed juices: orange, grapefruit, tomato, apple, cranberry. There are daily specials & a soup du jour. But I really had a taste for a taco. Just one. After I ate the spinach I went elsewhere for the taco. Before I left, I complained to my server about the tiny portion of spinach and she (politely) reminded me it was a "side". This place is five stars all day errrry day! Showed up bright and early yesterday and was the first person to be seated at Rex's on Pacific in San Pedro. The omelette was all fluffy and perfect with real ham in there not some fake ham roll junk (hate fake ham roll crap and many places try to get away with it). Pancake was great and the fruit is the reason to go to this place. Trust, order the fruit as your side or get a bowl of it. The latte was great and the service was really good too! I even went back and talked with the guys in the kitchen for a minute just to tell them how great everything was. They were cutting up tons of fresh fruit and it looked amazing. Quite possibly the most bland Greek Wrap and Breakfast Burrito I ever had. Green Eggs Cabrillo tasted incrementally better. Either the chef left early that day, or we all ordered the wrong thing. I came for the first time last Friday with a co-worker. This little cafe offers good tasting food that is very healthy for you. The parking is a little difficult but it's worth the struggle because the food here is delicious. I ordered the Stuffed French Toast with over easy eggs and sausage. Wow...it was so delicious. The French Toast wasn't overly sweet so that you couldn't finish it. The bananas and strawberries were nice and fresh. The service was excellent. My co-worker wanted a special order and they put it together for her without any problem. The only other downside to this place besides the parking is that the soda comes in a can...which means no free refills. So when I came here I was pretty much set on that, however I found that everything on the menu looked good and there is quite a variety of breakfasts and some lunch menu items. Instead of adding from the many choices of fillings or topping to go with the quite large whole wheat pancake I opted for an egg sunny side up with a turkey sausage patty. Next time I am absolutely going for the extra filling ! I liked the cozy dinning area and other than parking being a bit of a challenge I certainly enjoyed my experience. The Mediterranean burger came with a big bowl of excellent chicken soup and a few pieces of some kind of pickled veggies on the side. For nine bucks it would've been good to at least have the option of some fries. The 1/2 lbs of Angus beef patty was big and beefy but not all that tasty. Service? Not memorable. Went here today around 10 am to grab takeout. I overheard the hostess say there was about a 25 min wait, which seemed correct; there were about 15 people waiting outside. I got the tofu scramble and home fries. The tofu scramble (tofu with broccoli, mushrooms, carrots) was yummy, a little too heavy on the garlic for my liking and the home fries were the standard home fries you get anywhere, delicious as well. It came with 2 pieces of toast. The server who took my order was super nice and my food took about 10-15 minutes to come out. Overall, I was pretty happy with my meal here and yay to non veggie restaurants having vegan breakfast options! I really like their San Pedro burger, which comes with cheese, avocado, and bacon on a honey wheat bun. The meat was juicy and flavorful and all the other ingredients were fresh and tasty. It's delicious! The burger comes with a side, and I like to go the healthier route so I skip the fries and usually order the side salad with honey mustard ( IT'S THE BEST HONEY MUSTARD). Honestly, I could probably eat the side salad as a meal because it's so massive! The side salad comes with half a toasted bagel so it's really filling.
