Okaaaaay . . . . when I write a bad review on Yelp, I consider it a form of venting. I certainly don't think of my reviews on the website as veiled threats or attempts to actually change things. Sometimes you just need the whole world to know you're having a bad week . . . That being said, less than 24 hours after my review was posted, things with Richard's changed. A lot. The second my clock ticked to 8 am, Dave called, apologizing for the trouble, never referencing the review, but noting details I'd never mentioned to his mechanic. He offered explanations for the Geico confusion, travel compensation for the month without my car, and promised that I could have it back by lunchtime. I arrived at the shop that afternoon to find my car in perfect condition, polished and detailed, and was given a tour of the repairs by Eddie, the mechanic. We chatted about the mechanical repairs my dealer suggested and he gave me a few suggestions and estimates - after seeing his work and talking to him, I did feel like I trusted him to do more work, and to do it well and reasonably. Everyone at the shop was lovely and helpful and the car looks so good that my garage guys have been complimenting it. I just wish that there had been better communication from the outset. When I got the printout of Geico's estimate, it clearly said that the work was going to take 10 business days - exactly the amount of time that it was in the shop once the repairs were started. If anyone had been straightforward with me about how long it was going to take - instead of the "maybe tomorrow, maybe next week" - I would have been annoyed but able to handle it. And while I really appreciate the fantastic customer service I eventually received, I wish that it didn't have to come after a public internet rant. read more

Ohhh, what to say about Richards. I have such mixed feelings. I brought my car here after a hit and run that destroyed the back end. I got it back about a month ago and it looked beautiful and has run great since. So those are the positives, that yes, they did good work. BUT they took forever! I was first given an estimate of three weeks. Which then became four, then five, and finally after SIX weeks I got my car back. SIX weeks. Also, kind of annoying, the guys who worked on my car put different CDs in my disc changer and reprogrammed my radio stations. Richards knew I was annoyed by the delay and cut a couple hundred off my bill, which was nice, but it doesn't replace the hassle of calling every other day to see 'Is my car ready yet?' and waiting only to be told it will be couple more days, over and over and over. read more

Professional scam artists!!! That's all they do well!!! After getting my car back notice that the airbag light is still on and the body work on the hood and bumper we're fixed very poorly. Their sister shop on Touhy agreed to fix it. when I got it back they fixed it just as poorly as the first time. read more

So far so good! I was in a minor accident this morning that left the car undrivable and I was picked up by the owner, driven back to the garage where they took care of calling my insurance and mailing the report to the state. They checked to make sure that my insurance covered a rental car and arranged for a pick-up from Enterprise. They gave me a 10 day estimate, so I may change my review after I receive my car back. For now, I was so relieved to have someone help and take car of all of the paperwork. An accident is already a stressful thing and David from Richard's was great! ***Edit 4/23/08 I had to do most of the follow-up and they were never that friendly or helpful when I called back. I called today and they said that my car was ready. When I asked how long it had been ready for, the guy gave me attitude and said "it's not like it has been ready all week." Very poor customer service once they get your car. I'll update tomorrow once I pick my car up. read more

SMASH!!! In less than a second, your life and your car could be altered forever. Or, you could be lucky enough to live close to Richard's, when your vehicle, the victim of a hit-and-run crash, is given a hopeful prognosis by the staff at a well-reputed neighborhood body shop. I have to say that my review is definitely influenced by the good fortune I experienced after being hit in the middle of a major intersection by a major jerkface who decided they'd rather risk arrest (leaving the site of a crime) over an insurance hit. My opinion? Not smart. After being in total shock, but escaping serious injury, David, owner of Richard's, happened to be making his way back to the shop and stopped to assess my unfortunate situation (my Ford Focus being t-boned by a Crown Victoria on the driver's side). He arranged for my tow to the shop, and gave me a ride over. How wonderfully kind! When you're in an accident, it's about the little things: you've got to call the police, call your insurance, arrange for a tow, find a shop, get the paperwork done, get a rental, fill out the police report and send it in, contact your loved ones and make sure they know you're okay (or not), etc. The staff at Richard's, particularly Simone, made the process simple. She helped me talk to the insurance company to describe the damage and get all the details of crash aftermath taken care of. She arranged for my rental, as Richard's has Hertz and Enterprise representatives in shop, helped me fill out my police report, and dealt with all of these things in a professional and kind manner. Now, this review will remain incomplete until I get my car back. Due to the damage, the shop said it should take approximately 12 days to finish the job. I will definitely update when I get my car back, and let the Yelpiverse know the kind of job Richard's does. But as far as customer service goes, they've earned themselves a gold star in my book. read more

A few weeks back, I was trying to switch lanes while en route to work and the front end of my car was clipped by one of the many upstanding citizens of Chicago. It wasn't anything too terrible (dented front bumper and smashed side headlight), but it was still enough for me to go and try to get the thing fixed. After looking around at what shops there were in the Lincoln Square area, I came across Richard's. I gave them a call on a Thursday around 5:30 or so to see if they could check out my car and see if it was salvageable. Sure enough they invited me to bring the car in for them to give me a quick estimate. Once in there, I was told by Eddie that he could order the new light for my car and have it in the following day and that the whole process of ordering the light and repairing the car would cost me a paltry $50. This seemed a bit unbelievable, but I said alright and went ahead planning to come by the next day. Sure enough, when I showed up that Friday around 5:30 or so, they had the new headlight and were able to put it in and also pound out the dent in about 15 minutes time. And for the promised $50 price tag. I was and still am impressed by the quick service and great price they offered me. I definitely know where I'll be coming if I ever (God forbid) need to get my car fixed up again. read more

I used to come here for years until I noticed that the paint of the part they had fixed in my car started to peal off. The new part was actually rusted underneath the paint. I was giving an old car part. Unfortunately I had lost my receipt and apparently they also didn't have me in their records. .....strange....After all the many times I was there. I was referred to them by MiniCooper of Diversey. I had a better experience with Gerber. I had 2 doors that needed to be replaced and painted. It took 14 days. Then I had to take the car back twice because one door would not open a week later and they promised me that it had been fixed but the indicator light inside the car still showed that the door was open even when it was not so I had to take the car back again. They are more expensive than Gerber and there was absolutely zero communication from them during the 2 weeks they had my car. I had to call them for updates. They require 50% of the cost upfront and they do not take credit cards. Cash only. The paint job itself was very good and the car was spotless when I picked it up. read more

Richard's is a money maker! Please!!!! We need to start making police reports to any scams that Richard's Body Shop is creating for its customers so we can stop this cycle. Richard's is putting vehicles that have been claimed as totaled by insurance companies back on the road, over charging fees, holding customer vehicles illegaly, .......and more. Read the reviews for yourself on Yelp and other websites that have been posted. These are not only legal and ethical issues but also a major safety issue concerning the community when improperly serviced vehicles are being put back on the roads by Richard's Body shop. Richard's Body Shop is a scam. They charged my insurance company with Allstate almost $2,000.00 in towing and fees. Now Richard's Body Shop is trying to charge me storage fees for the time they had my vehicle in their possession while waiting on the check from Allstate. Richard's is keeping my car hostage until they get their check from Allstate. Despite Allstate reassuring them that they would receive their check and they should release my vehicle to me. Eddie Zipperstein who claims to be the owner then proceeded to tell me that his workers Gaby and Esmeralda who answer calls and do paperwork gave me the wrong calculations for fees that were owed to them. I had a 3-way call with Allstate and Eddie and the Allstate claims dept. also asked Eddie why he was reporting different amounts that were owed to his company. Eddie blamed it on his workers as miscommunication and stated that this is his business and he now decided that he was charging a different amount than quoted. He proceeded to tell Allstate that he was being generous and decided to charge me storage $100.00 per day instead of $150.00 per day for storage. How is it that Richard's body shop can get away with so many scams over the years on its customers and still be in business? Richard's body shop is charging me storage fees when they refused to give me my vehicle and I clearly stated to them i would pick it up. Who is regulating this company? Let's make sure Richard's is held responsible for their actions and report your concerns to the BBB (Better Business Bureau), file a formal complaint through the Illinois Commerce Commission, file a complaint with the city's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection as well as the news reporters like ABC7 I-Team and NBC5 response team. We need to make our complaints heard and show that this has been a consistent issue that Richard's Body shop has been scamming customers for years now and continues to be in business. read more

I had a horrible experience. Richards had my car for a month and a half to repair front end damage. While I respect that there was a lot of work to be done hey continued to tell me that the car would be ready a few days from now, but failed to call me when there were additional delays. When I voiced my concerns to Eddie and the staff that this was not only taking an insanely long time but that they kept changing the due date on me, they have me a bunch of excuses and failed to make the situation any better. I would just like to say that David K At Richards is about one of the best people in the industry and exceptional at his job customer service and not only going the extra mile for going the extra 10 miles. I can't say enough positive things about David. My mother went in there to get service done. By accident she did some damage to her car while pulling in the service drive. This happened at 9:30 in the morning David went with her to multiple car rental locations so that she could obtain a rental car while her car was fixed. He spent over five hours with her to get her what she needed to finish out her day. To me words can't express what he has done. We have been to multiple dealers and no one has come close to David. I can't thank him enough and my mother is beyond words. If you need body work on your vehicle or anything for that matter I would not go anywhere else but where David is at. In this customer service industry he is number one. Thank you David you are the best we have When work was done terms changed very disappointing all the fluff at the beginning was not sincere just a show. read more

I should say this; the bodywork they completed was fine. Everything else was a huge hassle. Maybe it was just the person I was dealing with, but I felt like it was a "bait and switch" routine. David looked at my car and made me all kinds of promises he couldn't keep. He told me he could have the work done by the time I got back from vacation (so I wouldn't be without a vehicle), he told me that they would buff out all of the scratches on my bumper. He called me over and over until I agreed to get the work done and then after they picked up my car, I never heard from him again. Not only could they not complete the work on time, but they were three days late and never called to update me or tell me they thought it would take longer than they promised. I emailed and called about getting my car the day it was due and no response, I called the following day after not hearing back from them because I needed it for a client meeting. I found out 2 hours before I had to leave that they needed it for a few more days. I again emailed him to explain my disappointment, but there was no response, no apology. When I finally got my car, they had not done all of the work they promised. The work they did do, looked fine. I will say the man who picked up and dropped off my car was very friendly. Even when they were running behind, they kept me informed, and even got me a car rental on them while the work was being completed. Overall, pretty meh with my experience with this body shop. The most important part, obviously, is how well did they repair my car. I would say they did a pretty good job. It looks great and it seems like it was done correctly. Really no issues regarding the quality of work and the final product here. The main issues I had were with the front desk, time of completion estimates, and detailing the car at the end. The lady I spoke to at the front desk was accommodating, however, she was not good at follow through. Examples, I called her multiple times with questions, and a couple of those times, she said she would need to ask and get back to me, asking for a call back number and everything, and just never called. I would have to call to follow up. Another example, the repair took about 5 days longer than expected, so she said she would call the insurance company covering the repairs and rental car to extend my rental, she never did. The time of completion estimate was also significantly wrong. I was told at the beginning it would be 2-3 weeks (and this was after they took my car apart and assessed the damage). It ended up taking almost a month to complete, which I realize in the car repair industry happens because it can be unpredictable, but it was just frustrating to call them and have them tell me "it will be done tomorrow" and then do that for 3 days in a row. Finally, when my car was ready to be picked up, I was unsatisfied with the quality of the detailing they did to my interior. They left some kind of sticky residue on my steering wheel, streak marks from the cleaner they used on a lot of the interior surfaces of my car, and dings to my window tints (which they did compensate me for, but still a hassle). Overall, I am torn. I believe that my car was fixed properly and was done well, but there were a lot of unnecessary annoyances during the process that were frustrating and in my opinion, avoidable. EDIT: also noticed after I got home that they lost my umbrella that I kept in the car door, not impressed. read more

I was in a minor accident. When I called Richards, whoever answered the phone said they'd try to get it repaired and returned to me in the week. They picked the car up on a Monday. Two weeks later - no word from Richards. My insurance adjuster called and reported that he got the run-around. A week later - Richards called and took payment over the phone and said the car would be delivered by the end of the day. Never delivered - no call - nothing. Absolutely terrible customer service.....patheric work ethic...and by far the most unprofessional business I have come across. I dropped my car off on the 17th of December 2011 for some minor repairs, and now its Jan 13 2012, there is still no sign of my car. Not once did they have the courtesy to call me and give me an update regarding my car.....even after saying that they gave me their "word". I guess their word counts as much as the word of a pick pocket. My insurance company mentioned that they they did not bother to get in touch with them until the 29th of December, i.e. two weeks after I dropped off my car. Owing to their tardiness, I had to pay out of pocket for a few days of rental use. Overall, I would suggest that you NEVER go to them, or use them. I left my car with these folks after my parked car had been hit by another car. It was critical that I had my car back by that Friday because I needed to drive back home for the holidays. I didn't receive any updates or feedback from them for 3 days straight (even though I had mentioned I needed it by Friday at the latest). I was upset and called in to get it sorted out. A helpful employee, Frank, really went the extra mile to take care of me. He prioritized my car to get serviced and worked with my insurance company to get the transaction done swiftly. Let me start by saying thank God for this place... I just bought a new car about three months ago when I was stopped at a red light and a semi hits my car (at low speed, but still maintained a lot of damage!) Their insurance company, which I will not name, would not acknowledge the pictures or quotes sent to them, or return any phone calls from Richard's Body Shop or myself. After almost a month, the insurance company refused to comp my car rental bill stating that it, "Exceeded the amount of time authorized." Unbelievable. Richard's comped my rental, and did so in an extremely pleasant and professional manner. Not to mention that my brand new car came back looking just as good as the day I bought it. It was even washed, and vacuumed. It looked perfect. Highly recommended; great work, and they really took all of my headaches away. read more

Left the car with him Monday afternoon and picked it up first thing Friday morning that same week. They went above and beyond to replace the bumper with a new Subaru part (rather than after market). UPDATED So they try to appear to be on top of their game but execution is lacking. They send emails letting you know what is happening with your car but you come to realize they are standard emails and nobody has actually reviewed them. After receiving one that will make that my car will be ready in two days I called to confirm. I was then told it would be another six. Call to confirm the day before told it would be another couple days. But wait, it gets worse. After confirming again that it would be ready on the fourth promised day I spoke to a very nice woman, Beatriz, who confirmed my car would be ready. I drove my rental car an hour to the body shop and was told it was not ready. Beatrice seemed angry with some of her coworkers but there was nothing they can do. I have wasted an incredible amount of time due to their incompetence. I have still not seen my car (they now claim they will be bringing it to me) and I'm hoping the repairs are done with a lot more precision then their customer service. In speaking with the enterprise rental car representative he confirmed this is a ongoing problem with this particular body shop. After getting my car I notice there is a loud vibration coming from the rear that was not there before. I speak With Eddie Z and he say, " I know what that is, bring it back and we will fix it" What? take another 4 hours out of my day to fix their mistake. really bad service + bad work equals NEVER AGAIN read more

Insurance fraud? RIGHT HERE. This scam body shop will hand you reused parts when they charged you for new, your car will come back dinged, dented and crooked. When I drove off the lot, the CHECK ENGINE light is on. Then, I took it to the mechanic and they CLEARED THE LIGHTS WITHOUT TELLING ME THE FAULTS. I took my car because my local Honda Dealership recommended them. +I called on a Saturday, and they have a great answering service. They towed my car the same day. -They had my car for four days before they finally came up with an estimate. +I got my car back so nice and cleaned and it was completely buffed. -I got my car back today (a week later), Now my steering wheel shakes a lot and it didn't shake before. I am going to call them tmrw so I will provide an update to let u guys know how they handle this. -I took my car back the next day n they discovered the control arm was broken so they fixed it -they returned the rental to me, while they fixed the car -I got my car back the next day and Finally my car is completely fixed Overall, it was a hassle and I'm not sure I would go back nor recommend this place. read more

My car was repaired here following a fender bender. The final product was great but they constantly lied to me about the time of completion. Ultimately, I had to beg for my car back. They were kind, fit me into the schedule, cleaned the sunroof drain which was causing the leak inside. This past time, they also cleaned my car. I had an extremely basic repair done to my vehicle- passenger door shell replaced and wheel covering. Originally told Friday pick up, then Friday afternoon. No return call after told would call me back. Then pushed to Monday, then Monday afternoon. Again said would call me with update, no update. Finally told would be done Tuesday at 10am. Came to shop and vehicle not finished. Although they did send me back home in a ride it was over an hour and $44 Lyft wasted as I live 35 minutes from shop. Then when I went to check out they added on an additional almost $600 due to them incorrectly matching the vehicles paint during initial quote. When I dropped off vehicle I wrote the quote $ I was given and signed next to it. I should not have to argue for the quote while my vehicle is days overdue and after I've made a trip to the shop to find out it's not ready. There should be no issues matching paint color when this is a certified Nissan repair shop. The error was on their end, not mine as the customer. Assured me the detailing on the inside and outside of my vehicle would be prestige. Vehicle was returned to me with crumbs still under drivers seat and several white hue marks on body of vehicle of wax not rubbed in. Definitely not a "prestige" detail job. Overall a very stressful journey with Richard's Body Shop, specifically Nahn. Will not be recommending. read more

Richard's was recommended to me from my car dealership to repair damage to my car door and this body shop created a more stressful, frustrating experience than I ever imagined. I only wanted a quote to see how much it would cost me to repair the car. The only thing David wanted to talk about was whether or not I would be using my car insurance. I told him that I would make this decision once he gave me the quote. I wanted to make the decision once I found out if it would be feasible for me to pay out of pocket. He did not accept his answer. He kept pressing me to use my insurance no matter what, trying to tell me that it would not increase my rate, that I would be better off using insurance, etc. I told him multiple times that I was not asking for his opinion on whether to use insurance or not, I only wanted a quote. It was my decision to make whether or not to use insurance, but he still did not let up. I gave David my car and said I just wanted a quote and wanted to pick it up after work. I went back to work, and didn't hear anything for the next few hours. Finally, around 3:45, I texted David asking for an update. No response until he finally called me at about 4:45. I told him I wanted to come pick my car up. He said that they had taken the door off of my car to see if it needed to be replaced (BTW - the other place I got a quote from did NOT need to take the door off, and gave me my quote in about 30 minutes without taking my car, so I know that this process was not necessary). David then told me that instead of the about $1700 he had estimated earlier, the repair would cost $3500. He again started going off about how I should use my insurance to pay for this. He completely overwhelmed me - first he told me that they had taken the door off of my car, then he told me that the repair was almost $2000 more than he had originally said, then he was pressuring me to start the repair right away. I told him that it was overwhelming to get all this information at once and I was not ready to make a decision on what to do - I just wanted my car back. He AGAIN started pressuring me to use my insurance to pay for this. I AGAIN stated that I was not asking for his opinion on how to pay for this. I asked if I could pick up my car. He said he would make a call, and called me back 10 minutes later with a Hertz rentals on the line telling me that he could get me a rental car right away and they would start working on my car. I asked him to hang up on Hertz and focus on getting me MY car back as I had asked multiple times in the previous hour. All I wanted that day was a simple quote and it turned into a nightmare. David again hung up and called me 5 minutes later, this time saying that because it was 5PM there was nobody at the shop to put my car door back on, and the earliest I could get my car was noon the next day. This was even more frustrating to me because I had been asking for my car back for 1.5 hours, and it felt like he purposely delayed putting the car door back on to try to pressure me to just get a rental and let them fix the car. He was literally holding my car hostage and trying everything to avoid letting me pick up my car. I asked him why they hadn't put the door back on and he made an excuse about how the quote would have been difference if I had been using insurance vs. paying out of pocket, so they didn't put the door back on??... Not sure how this makes ANY sense, because 1. the repair cost should be the same no matter how I am paying and 2. I had been clear that I only wanted a quote that day. He also started yelling at me that it took so long to get the quote because "I know it might not matter to you, but to SOME people, $1000 is a big deal, and we wanted to give you the right quote rather than coming back and adding $1000".......David doesn't know me at all, and to insinuate that $1000 is nothing to me is an incredibly rude assumption/completely untrue & also IRRELEVANT. At this point, there was nothing I could do that day, so I waited overnight (obviously incredibly stressed). When I called the next day, David texted me saying he was taking a personal day and was no help. I called the main shop number and was told that I owed $150 for the quote & for taking the door off. Again - another auto body shop gave me a quote without taking the door off, so removing the door was not needed. At this point I was so fed up and just wanted my car back, so a coworker drove me to Richard's and I picked my car up. They had done a terrible job putting the door back on my car, and it no longer closes properly (it had been closing properly before Richard's, even after the damage happened). On top of that, my car was a complete mess, with dirt and dust everywhere. This experience was awful, they tried to force me to give them my business. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, where they don't pressure you, take advantage of you (especially young people & women) or try to make decisions for you. read more

This was one of the most painless experiences with car repair I've ever had. Someone hit my parked car (while I was at home in Ohio, of course...weird) and left a decent enough dent for me to take it in. I took it in on a Thursday after work, really close to the time they closed. He looked at it, told me what my options were, told me how much it would be, and sent me on my way. Monday after work I picked it up, again, close to closing time. Not only is the dent COMPLETELY gone, my car is clean (even the inside!!! It's like new in there!!), I got a jar of touchup paint for when d-bags don't know how to park, and it was all EXACTLY THE PRICE HE QUOTED ME!!! Un-flipping-believable. Love me some Richards! I have been going here for over 7 years for the same vehicle. Mostly I use them for mechanical repairs. Their top guy over there Juan knows his stuff. I've also had them repair said vehicle when I almost totalled it a few years back. It looks fantastic to this day. They are fair price wise and best of all have another shop on Grand that is close to my house. I can just drop off my car there now and they take it up to the other shop for me! Sweet! Richard's Body Shop is recommended by VW, so I have taken my car there a couple of times for insurance-related work (thankless Chicago drivers banging into parked cars). The work - albeit covered by someone else's insurance - was performed well, which is what you should expect. My complaints have to do with the 'other business' they seem to conduct with my car when they have it: Richard's staff put 26 miles on my car during the last 2.5 day repair visit (to repaint the driver side door). They can't need to test drive a minor paint job, but if they do, 26 miles is way too far. They've denied doing this in the past, but odometers don't lie. read more
