I'm a regular at the Ricks Cafe and Bakery down the street , so when our server recommend this sister restaurant for dinner it seemed only natural that the food would be as hearty and delicious as the Breakfast place. Well I'm sad to say , this location fell short. It starts off promising, they bring you deviled eggs and are friendly and prompt. The disconnect came with the food.... Was my asparagus soup supposed to be sour? My aroz con polo was mushy ( look at my photo) and bland. The tostones and plantains were like deep fried nothingness. I would always pass by on my way to work. After so many years of it still open , I had to try . We came for lunch and ordered breakfast , wit the Cuban items on the menu we had to try lechone. ( pulled pork ) Everything we had was delicious so we came for dinner . Their service was great an ambience was good . Highly recommended. As excited as I was to find a Cuban restaurant in PSP it was unfortunately a total letdown. The $5 happy hour mojito was alcohol loaded almost to the point of being tasteless, it had a green sugar rim that was dried up like it had been made hours before, it was missing the sugar and minty taste that mojitos are known for. The only food worth getting is the fried yucca and plantains. Everything else tasted like it was freezer already made food or it came from a can. The service was slow, the waitress was nice and friendly but she seemed like she was overwhelmed not by her job but by the manager, you could tell the manager hated his job and lacked customer/employee skills. My rating could have been a solid five. The food was well-prepared and plentiful. I ordered fried chicken, cole slaw, onion rings, and flan delivered by Uber. Unfortunately all the food arrived packaged in one plastic bag. The slaw and flan were stacked on top of the hot items. I immediately unpacked the bag but the slaw that should be cold and crisp was already warm and soggy. The flan was soupy. Filling not bad but crust was weak. Owner needs to find a different place to get their key lime pie from in my opinion, there are much better ones out there. Not a bad price though. We have been going to Rick's for 8 years. We like their breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoy their specials and tonight we are trying Lamp Chomps for the first time! When I need comfort food, I order their Turkey dinner - just like Thanksgiving with trimmings. On the other hand, they have lots of light dishes and one of my favorites is their vegetable plate. I think Rick's does right by vegetables. Never over done, lots of seasonal variety and lightly seasoned. Sometimes I just order veggies and potatoes. We also like their ribs and chicken salad. The menu is varried- something for everybody: pasta, tacos, Cuban, and a great Cobb salad. Many very tasty deserts: I like the chocolate cake or apple pliers with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or lemon bars. I love their Cuban rice and beans too. Sometimes I order that for dinner (plenty of protein) and pie for dessert. And good service and very nice people. read more

I'm typically not much of a diner guy, and while the name belies the fact that this place has an upscale Denny's vibe, that's exactly what it is. Basic American diner food, with a vague Cuban vibe, fully Americanized and made into a one-size-fits-all "good enough" default eatery for those who are content with such places. Don't get me wrong. The place isn't ugly, it's just dineresque. The servers weren't bad, but utterly forgettable. I can't quite recall anything about them. The food was decent, in fact my Cuban steak sandwich was better than anything you'd get at a standard diner, if not amazing. The prices were average, nothing to complain about. You could probably find a better place if you did a little research, but frankly, you could do a lot worse. If you're going with unadventurous friends, this is a nice safe bet. read more

We had the Cuban ribeye & the Ropa Vieja and both were super tasty. Came with veggies, perfectly cooked plantains, & probably the best rice and beans I've ever had! The iced Cuban latte was light & didn't need any sugar added. The Cuban flan was just perfect and not too sweet. On top of the great food, Scotty the host/waiter was so warm upon greeting! Let me use the " I am of Cuban descent " disclaimer before my review. We have been in the desert over four years now so this was a long time coming. A restaurant that serves some Cuban fare is always a consideration when in the area. Finally, we gave Rick's a chance yesterday right when they opened. The four of us entered and were seated at a booth in the back room close to the bar. The digs are clean and ample with a couple of TV's for your viewing pleasure. They had the Michigan/Michigan State game which ended up being a doozy. We ordered lemonade all around before we looked over the menu. I had a preconceived idea of what I was looking for and I should have stayed on course. The children requested the mini-slider with fries and the chicken tenders with fries. You just can't mess that up unless there is a major malfunction. The kids enjoyed their meals and ate heartily. My wife and I decided to split a couple of appetizers. We asked for the Mini Media Noche sandwich and a Cubano Trio. The sandwich is comprised of ham, pork, cheese and a pickle. It also comes PRESSED. This sandwich was packed with meat and reminded me of the new Arby's commercials. " We've got the MEATS " (I still can't believe that is Ving Rhames) The sandwich was good but it comes on a roll in lieu of the regular sandwich which is normally on a lighter, sweeter bread. (Think a big King's Hawaiian Roll without the air) It also came with fries and two Platanos Maduros. (Fried Plantain) These are fried once and they are sweet like a dessert. The Cubano Trio are plantains that are fried twice (Tostones) and are cupped and covered with different fillings. You have a choice of Ropa Vieja (Shredded Meat), Lechon (Pork Chunks) or Picadillo (Ground Beef). We agreed we'd try one of each. IMHO this was a mistake. The Picadillo had so much flavor and brought back childhood memories. A definite staple in the Cuban diet that you can mix with white rice. This one just BLEW the other two out of the water. It was seasoned to perfection which included garlic, onions, green olives and raisins. After dinner, our server Becky surprised us with a Flan for dessert. Something about making up for the time they had us waiting when we arrived. Nonsense, the service was very good and Becky was attentive and sweet. Unfortunately, we already had plans to visit Great Shakes after our lunch. Oh, and my wife and kids do not eat Flan. You KNOW what THAT means. It was good but my mother's was much better. Not only that, I know some Dominicans that make an OUTSTANDING Flan Cheesecake. Overall, it was a decent meal although I will try the regular Media Noche the next time out. This is not JUST a Cuban Restaurant. There are items Cubans are programmed to eat but American selections exist as well. I also found the pricing of this very simple food to be a tad on the high side. Back in L.A. I could eat like a king at a Cuban Restaurant for the same we spent on split dish appetizers. This is not a critique but merely a fact. We will return. It is in MY BLOOD!! read more

We heard this place had some good pork, so that's why we walked in. First ordered the grilled salad wedge. We should have stopped there because that was the best part of our meal. I ordered the pulled pork sliders. Something I make at home myself and brag about to friends. Their sliders? Nothing special or even Cuban about it. It was just pork. Plain and tasteless. Disappointing and forgetful. My wife had the Ahi sliders. I tried some of hers and hers was a bit better than mine. But nothing to call home about. And nothing that would have us ever come back. We have been to Ricks twice in the last two weeks for Happy Hour and the service, food and value is excellent! Generous portions, good pours and well prepared food plus really good service from experienced waiters that really know their business make Ricks an enjoyable experience! We had the Tostones and pork quesadillas and a Caesar salad which were all teriffic! We had two glasses of wine and two IPA drafts and the bill was under $27. Try it you'll like it! We were at Ricks for breakfast this am. I had the corned beef (not out of a can) with poached eggs which was excellent, my wife has eggs and bacon prepared perfectly. We stopped here on the way to a short girls getaway. The girls ordered from the kids menu and each and every one of them enjoyed their meal. We tried their chicken strips, the chicken was juicy and the batter was not thick as you would typically find in a children's meal. I had the Cubano Trio which was fantastic! The flavors were perfect and just enough food. My daughter split the Patty Melt with my friend and they both enjoyed it. After a long day spent traveling I was really hungry. I went for a walk to explore the area near the hotel. Rick's Desert Grill got my attention with a sign that said they had Cuban food. After a bit of a wait I was seated. The menu offers a number of American items and several Cuban items. I could resist the Media Noche Cuban Sandwich. My food arrived quickly and the sandwich was accompanied by a bowl of rice and black beans and two small fried plantains. The sandwich was perfect. Generous portions of pork and ham topped with gooey melted cheese, crunchy pickles and yellow mustard. The bread was crunchy on the outside with a chewy interior. The beans and rice were tasty and the plantains were lightly caramelized and sweet. My server Jill and the rest of the staff were very attentive.
