The space is a bit small, but we didn't feel cramped and were seated at a table by the window and front door. Prices are steep, and the food took a while to come out. After trying a good portion of the menu, I wouldn't recommend Rin-Tei unless you're ordering very specific dishes. Roast Beef Carpaccio ($28): House-made sous vide roast beef with red onion, cilantro, and green onion, served with chopped wasabi and citrus soy sauce. This was the only chef's special, so we ordered it for the table. Unfortunately, it looked much better than it tasted. The beef was dry and didn't soak up the citrus soy sauce. Garlic Shrimp ($22): Crispy shrimp tossed in garlic butter. I usually don't like shrimp with shells, but I enjoyed this more than expected. It had great flavor and was a generous portion. Thai Fried Chicken ($12): Garlic and fish sauce-marinated fried chicken. It looked and tasted like Japanese chicken karaage. The chunks were a good size, but the Thai flavors didn't really come through. Japanese Style Roast Pork ($28): Sous vide roast pork served with tortilla chips, papaya, cucumber, and radish sprouts, alongside a sweet bean and honey sauce. The pork was even drier than the roast beef carpaccio and pretty bland. The sauce helped make it more bearable, but I couldn't eat more than one slice. The concept also didn't feel well thought out. Rin-Tei Flight ($17): A tasting flight of IPPIN Junmai Daiginjo, Akaoni Wheat, and Uji Green Tea Umeshu plum wine. The first two were too strong for me, but the plum wine was sweet and divine. Rin-Tei Hot Pot with Cod in Creamy Soy Milk-Citrus Soy Sauce ($30) + Rice Noodles ($3): Braised cod with white radish, bamboo shoots, cabbage, mushrooms, green onion, seaweed, ginger, cilantro, and yuzu citrus. My mom felt there wasn't much cod, so she didn't think it was worth the price. However, the portion of rice noodles was generous--enough for two people to share. Tom Yum Noodles with Shrimp ($25): Rice noodles in a spicy & sour infused soup with Thai herbs, shrimps, sh balls, crushed almonds, shimeji mushrooms, & cilantro. I didn't get to try this, but my dad said it was good and filling. Basil Tofu ($18): Crispy tofu wok-tossed with garlic, chili pepper, and basil in seasoned soy sauce, topped with crispy basil. The flavors and texture were nice, but not remarkable enough to justify the price. That said, it was one of the better dishes of the night. Service was by this very friendly Japanese lady and we were seated immediately on Sunday lunch. You have to go to the front table to order the food and I found it strange that we had to pay first. The croquettes (appetizers) were delicious! Portion sizes for the noodle bowls are large and each bowl is probably sufficient to satisfy two adults. We got the coconut milk with chicken, the Tom-yum noodle bowls with shrimp and the Tan-Tan noodle bowl. All lunch items were delicious and we packed remainders for dinner. They were all good but I think next time I will go with a bigger appetite and order a noodle soup which seems very popular among other diners. Looking for a nice little lunch date, my partner and I had decided on Rin-Tei after hearing a lot about it on social media. At first I was a little confused about the whole concept, as it seemed to be Japanese owned, but had Thai flavors with some Vietnamese ingredients. However, this place was fantastic. I rarely give three-star ratings, so I'm a little conflicted. The service was terrific -- the lady who served my friend and me was really helpful and checked in on us a few times. I did not like that we had to order and pay at the counter. The owner responded to another review here saying the counter payment is part of the "service style," and I have no idea what that means. Tips should be dependent on service, not calculated ahead of time. Paying upfront also makes it a hassle to order more food. And I did want more food, because their vegan kra pao isn't filling at all. The description sounds fancy, but in reality, it's $23 for rice, tofu, kelp, a few tiny mushrooms, a handful of veggies, and a lime slice. It's the same price as the regular kra pao dishes, which have an egg and beef or shrimp. The vegan kra pao should either have way more volume (like 2-3x the amount of veggies and mushrooms) OR cost significantly less than the meat versions. There is no way the kelp and tofu cost the same as shrimp, beef, and eggs.... As for the taste: the dish was pretty good, but missing the spice I associate with Thai food. It didn't taste spicy at all? Anyway, I left feeling hungry. I did not want to bother with ordering more food (which probably would have been equally overpriced and unsatisfying tbh). The touch of the croquette is very soft and it is tasteless. ($15) The chicken rice, to be honest even rooster and rice is better. ($18) unacceptable, the chicken is tasteless, the only thing that has taste is the ginger sauce. The rice is very mushy..... Creamy soy mushroom with chicken pho, this is their signature and most popular dish. ($25) overrated and overpriced. Yes their is soy milk taste, but it taste like instant noodle. Their dish takes a long time to arrive, but the device is bad. Once I finished my dish they quickly collected it and gave us a check. I'm telling you EVERYTHING we got was so good, we got spring rolls, the fried chicken and clam pho. Very attentive and courteous service, they checked in on how the food was multiple times. The ordering process is a little weird, you order and pay at the front kiosk after being seated. Ambiance was quiet and calm, great for chatting, and since it wasn't super busy we didn't feel rushed through our meal at all. The food was tasty, although one negative I'd say is their lunch menu has very few vegetarian options. I got the basil tofu, which was very crisp and flavorful, but none of the noodles or soups is vegetarian. My friends got the creamy soy milk pho with mushrooms and chicken which apparently was very flavorful, creamy, and delicious, as well as the creamy soy milk pho with keema curry, which also received praise. The first was real nice - it had a deep sesame flavour as expected (I particularly enjoyed this as I love sesame but I wouldn't recommend to someone who doesn't love this flavour). Would have liked it to be a tad more spicy though. The soy milk pho was very interesting - a homey comforting experience. I've never had anything like it, however my companions were not the biggest fans of the flavour. Chicken Croquette: I thought this was a perfect croquette. Crispy, well-breaded, and balanced inside. Highly recommended. Tuna Tartare: Another of my favorites. This was fresh, well-seasoned, and delicious. It was accompanied by chips. Highly recommended. Creamy Sesame Tan Tan Pho: Very interesting and delcious; I looked forward to this one when I saw it on the menu. It was rich but not overwhelming, with a well-executed balance of flavors. There is something unique and heartwarming about this restaurant. As soon as you walk in, it's very bright and modern yet simple and clean. The food was amazing. We came on a Friday night at prime time 6:30pm and there was a short wait about 10 mins. The host gave us the menu for us to look at while we waited so it didn't feel long. I got the pad kra braised beef and it was very flavorful and tender. For me, it was definitely more than enough food. For my friend, he finished all of it and probably could have had more. We also all shared the spring rolls and Thai fried chicken. Spring rolls were fresh and peanut sauce was yummy. The Thai fried chicken was pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary. Went here for a weekend lunch with friends. At first glance, the environment is cool and inviting. You are seated and then asked to return back to the front to order. We got the chicken croquette, creamy soy pho and the ka prow with braised beef. The presentation on all of their dishes is very well done. However, the croquette lacked favor despite being perfectly crunchy. I suppose the highlight would be the soy pho which was decent. Their most popular dish, it has a lot of ingredients but lacks a certain wow factor. Finally, the ka prow was similarly adequate in flavor. I wish this portion was bigger and spicier but once again I recognize they're catering to a wider demographic. Overall I had a great time with my friends but I would have had just as good as a time sitting on the grass at nearby Central Park. If I had to describe this place in short, it would be aggressively mid. They leaned too hard into the fusion aspect and the result is a melange of admirable yet lacking dishes. We just came back from our Japan trip and was really missing Japan. This place has been on my bookmarks for some time and we just so happen to be near by and my other friend had tried this place and agreed to go cause it was pretty good. If you don't know the area, you might miss it. As you walk in the decor minimal and modern. We got seated for 4 at the table top and ordered the tantan pho, creamy soy milk pho with mushroom and chicken, Keema curry, dassai flight, orange cream soda, berry lemon soda, and banana cream soda. Everyone enjoyed their food and love how different it is with "pho." The noodles was a little bit thicker than normal pho noodles cause it has a bite to them, but it's cooked really well! We all ordered different cream sodas cause you usually never see that in anyone's menu. Out of all of them I liked the banana cream sodas cause the most. The lady that took our order is so sweet and I loved how they spoke some Japanese to us. Will definitely come back here again with more friends and family. read more
