San Mateo has some cool restaurants, and Rin-Tei is one of them. Parking is pretty nonexistent, but that should not detour you from checking this restaurant out. The seating, hostess and waitress turned out to be one and the same, so my speculation is that they were shortstaffed. The place was pretty busy when we arrived, and the seating can feel rather tight, as the actual tables are small and pretty crammed together We ordered the shrimp spring rolls. I wanted something light and fresh. It was packed with lots of fresh veggies and was pretty tasty. There was barely enough of the dipping sauce for the spring rolls and when we asked the waitress for additional sauce, she said she wasn't able to provide it. I thought that was rather odd. We ordered Thai iced tea, which were decent, but not anything spectacular. The clay pot with the caramelized cod was really tasty. It just wasn't a lot of it. Everything about the dish was delicious, but it ate more like an appetizer rather than an entrée. The Keema Curry- we specifically asked how identical to authentic Japanese curry. This dish was when we were told it was really spot on. It was really not spot on. The curry itself which is supposed to be a mixture of minced pork, a variety of seasonings, then topped with a sunny side up egg. There was barely any meat in this "curry ", and the flavor was unfortunately very underwhelming. As a fan of authenticity, this dish really missed the mark. I actually plan on going back because I wanna try some of the other dishes. Couples that were sitting on either side of us had ordered different things that looked absolutely delicious and one couple had remarked about how tasty their food was, so I'm guessing the curry was just one off. I went over the weekend with my husband & daughter to Rin Tei. No crowd on a Saturday which was nice. Parking - we found street parking in the area luckily. Baby friendly restaurant which was nice, they also have high chairs. You pay at the register then they'll serve the food. What we ordered: Chicken Rice: We ordered this mostly for our daughter and to be honest, we thought it was just ok. It was Thai style chicken with miso ginger sauce and the taste wasn't anything special. Overall 3/5 stars. Beef Pho: My husband ordered this one and he thought it was ok as well. Standard beef pho, nothing special as well. He was not fan of the noodles, I'm not sure what type they use but it tastes like a pad Thai noodles instead of regular pho noodles so it gave a weird texture. He gave it 3.5/5 stars. Creamy Sesame Tan Tan Pho: I ordered this one. I actually really enjoyed the soup for this one but I agree with my husband that the noodles just gave it a weird texture. The soup was delicious and creamy though. I'd give it 4/5 stars. Calamari: This one I must say was too much batter for us. This Asian fusion spot has been on my foodie bucket list for a while and I had some time before my shift to grab a bite, so here I am. I ordered the Thai fried chicken and the creamy sesame tan tan pho. The Thai fried chicken was good. It tasted basically like chicken karaage. The tan tan pho as it states is creamy and the flavor is very well balanced. The food came out in a very timely manner which I appreciated and the staff is very nice. Ordered the chicken rice because of other reviews, the chicken was juicy but way too peppery. The rice itself was dry and kind of bland, so definitely not like Thai chicken rice, but it didn't taste bad either. The new soy milk chicken and mushroom noodle soup was actually the best dish we tried. It doesn't taste like pho, ramen, or Taiwanese savory soy milk, more like a creamy miso-butter mushroom soup with noodles. Heavy but comforting. The shrimp kaprow was fine but not very flavorful. It came with a fried egg on Japanese rice, saucy but missing that punchy Thai basil flavor. The surprise hit was the Brussels sprouts appetizer: super good, especially the sauce. I got the Kra Pow, my friend had the Basil Tofu, and we shared a chicken karaage. Everything was good! I've also had the Creamy Tan Tan Pho (cold), and it was an interesting dish. I did enjoy it, but as Vietnamese girl, I couldn't really see how it was pho like at all. BUT, it was really good, even as leftovers the next days. The chicken croquettes did not have a pleasant texture: it was quite mushy and it was slightly under fried. The Rin-Tei was pretty good with a great assortment of different items to try: calamari, tonkatsu, spring rolls, and papaya salad. They were each very tasty and had their own unique flavor profiles which made the plate a fun experience. The beef stew and ASARI pho were definitely the best items we had. The cold pho is literally what the name suggests and is nothing too special. The price was definitely on the pricier side. Overall not bad but definitely not my favorite. I liked that the breading wasn't super thick and there was a lot of filling. The chicken filling was good. For my entree, I ordered the Cold Sesame TanTan Pho. This was a very refreshing dish. Some gfs recommended this spot for lunch after church and I have to admit I was a little skeptical. Turns out I really liked it! I got the Asari pho, friends ordered vegetable pho, and soy milk pho. The ambiance was cozy and clean. There were holiday decorations on the front door, which made the place very festive at night. Definitely make a reservation as it can get crowded, even on a monday evening. Parking is easy, as there are options for street parking or the garage across the street. Even though the tables were full, it wasn't too loud and you can still engage in conversation with those at your table. The decor was simple but gave modern japanese vibes. For appetizers, we ordered the brussel sprouts, tuna tartare, shrimp spring rolls (not pictured) and octopus aglio e olio. The brussel sprouts were very crispy and well seasoned. Tuna tartare had a nice and light sauce and paired well with the chips. It tasted like poke with chips. Octopus was tender and had an interesting texture with the fried rice noodle. For mains, we got the cold ox tail noodle soup, creamy soy milk tantan pho, beef stew (they suggested this to be shared with 2 people - it wasn't as flavorful as we thought it'd be. I was having a cruddy day, but Rin-Tei made me feel better with their wholesome food. I've followed them since their opening, but was honestly skeptical of the concept. High-priced Asian fusion? A random mix of Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, and some Chinese? Even some Italian. Like, why..? So it took me a while to come around to being open to try them out, and I realized that I had been missing out on something good as soon as I had my first spoon of food. I did try to eat here at an earlier date, but I had an off-putting experience where a group of 2 came right behind us, though their entire party of 10 hadn't arrived yet. However, my party of 2 waited for tables to open up along with the party of 10, and when the entire 10 came along, they told us to wait for all 10 people to look through the menu and make their orders. We left, since we should have been accommodated first and the 10 people were taking ridiculously long to order. Their ordering process is weird, by the way - they ask you to order and pay at the front, and then you are seated. At least you can leave as soon as you're finished eating. My incident is definitely worth at least a star deduction (and no support, since the obvious preferential treatment was rather rude and unfair), but I like their food so much that I'll forgive it. To address the obvious high price point, it's worth it, and I taste it. Their ingredient sourcing and meticulous care in crafting each meal makes up the cost. - Thai Fried Chicken The description says it's marinated with garlic and fish sauce, but it honestly tasted plain. There weren't a lot of pieces given the price point, though the chicken was moist and tender. - Croquette Cute little croquette fingers filled with shredded chicken salad, served with something that tastes like subtle marinara. The inside tasted like a tuna mayonnaise mixture with a lightly fried exterior, and was certainly interesting but nothing I'd get again. - Creamy Soy Milk Pho with Mushrooms and Chicken The soup is a mix of chicken broth and soy milk, though it mostly tasted like soothing, savory hot soy milk. It is thick and rich, and certainly unique. The chicken even has an individual treatment of being sauteed in butter and soy sauce! The mushrooms also tasted like they were separately sauteed. I admire the care that went into each ingredient, and the effort shows in the taste. If you enjoy creamy broths, this is amazing. - Beef Pho It's a solid bowl of pho, with a few criticisms: it's not as good as San Jose's best, the noodles are a little wider and on the al dente side, and the soup has extra star anise taste. Aside from that, the meat is hearty and good, and it's piping hot. - Tomato Beef Pho Same as above, but with fresh spring mix and freshly plucked cherry tomatoes, which makes it absolutely amazing. I think I go through a trance whenever I eat fresh vine-ripened tomatoes, and they gave so many of them, so juicy, so plump, so ready to burst in my mouth (they're really hot). - Tom Yum Noodles with Shrimp The tom yum was not overwhelming with some unexpected creaminess. It's a savory sweet and sour soup with plump shrimp, generic fish balls, mushrooms, squid, random almond slices that somehow worked with the crunch, and two fried wonton dumplings which I wasn't expecting. It's a solid pick, though I wish the fish balls were homemade. - Kra Pao with Braised Beef I think they use Koshihikari rice because that rice tasted extra plump and premium. The ingredients once again shined so well in this dish, and the flavors were incredibly balanced; the acidic bell peppers and onions went well with the perfectly seasoned braised beef and basil. - Basil Tofu It's a crisp and chewy skin wrapped around a steaming hot block of silky tofu, in a bowl of delicious savory soy, adorned with lightly fried basil leaves. I do wish the leaves were more fried. It gives off Thai version of agedashi tofu vibes, and works well shared. While I wasn't too pleased with the appetizers, the taste of the entrees more than made up for them. They are very kind and attentive in service, and it's an overall quiet and calm place to dine. Not many places source ingredients or create innovative dishes as well as Rin-Tei, so for that I consider them a top tier Asian restaurant. read more

Looking for a place for dinner on a Saturday night, partner Yelped dinner places based on ratings, Rin-Tei came up. 4+, 1K ratings? How'd we miss that? It's early, decided to walk in. Just in time, by the time we got seated there was a line, so it must be good. While we were waiting we chatted with the maitre'd, a Japanese man who was polite, knowledgeable, engaging. We talked about our recent trip to Japan, the great service we received, how it could be done in the U.S. to set a standard for servers, all done without tips in Japan but sadly in the U.S. that's not how it works. Interesting, service is part of the allure of Rin-Tei. We ordered the papaya salad, the green curry, and the Kra Pao beef, all but the papaya salad recommended by the maitre'd, who suggested the curry because it was flavorful but not spicy (Japanese curry). The papaya salad was so different from typical preparations, light on the dressing, a little citrusy, but the flavors of the papaya and the spices used were apparent but didn't overwhelm each other. The green curry and the Kra Pao came almost simultaneously, other served with a Japanese rice not available to the public, and two separate bowls, daring us to enjoy each separately without mingling their distinctive flavors. The curry was not spicy except a hint of heat the didn't linger like a bad cigar. We enjoyed each of the components married to a curry that didn't overwhelm but accompanied the vegetables and the chicken. A refreshing version we enjoyed (especially since we typically avoid curries because they're made more to highlight its heat rather than its flavor). The Kra Pao was excellent, too. We could enjoy a well marinated beef with its components being equally highlighted with the beef. Having separate bowls meant enjoying separate flavors over and over. The chefs have a deft hand in their creations, none overwhelmed the other, each was flavorful on its own accord. Too often dishes nowadays present muddled tastes that are either overwhelming or taste the same, especially in Asian dishes. Our bill including tip was $87, including dessert. We are old school, used to getting value for our meal, and tasting good. Rin-Tei satisfied both, service was Japan-esque, stag was sincere and seemingly enjoying what they were doing, which made us enjoy the meal even more. We will be back for more! read more

We came with a party of 9 so we called ahead to make a reservation because the restaurant was pretty small. The interior was very cute and minimalistic. We took a few minutes to look at the menu and placed our orders. I got the Tom Yum Noodle with Shrimp ($25) and I loved it! The flavor was amazing, the noodles were al dente, the toppings were so good. I wish the shrimps were pre-peeled but it wasn't a deal breaker. The portion size was pretty big too! Happened to bumped into this resto as I was staying near the SFO airport for a business trip and was looking for some good restos around and found this gem of a place in San Mateo. I came around 7:45 pm and there was free street parking available. As soon as I entered the resto, it reminded me of a lot of izakaya or ramen places in Japan. They had few tables and also a bar space for solo eaters like me. I was seated quick and sat at the bar. I was given the regular menu and the chefs special menu so of course I had to choose from the chefs special menu. I ordered their Creamy soy milk Pho with chickens and mushroom as this really intrigued me from a dish and flavor profile perspective. Never had a soymilk broth as a base for Pho. It had lots of umami flavor and wasn't salty but well balance flavor and you can taste very ingredient on this soup. BRAVO to the chef!! Then I and their spicy wings which came with 4 full-on chicken wings, which I love esp the tail, and it was well cooked and loved the touch or 7 spices but not overpowering. This was a really interesting small establishment. We didn't eat much here but what we did have was good! I'd say a little on the pricier side. The establishment is very small and I'm guessing they're shooting for super fine dining. However all the patrons were pretty much dresses casual to semi casual. A super comfortable and aesthetic spot. The restaurant is cozy with a good number of tables, but there's also bar seating (which is where we sat). Service was amazing; everyone was so nice, explained the dishes, and really made us feel welcome. Parking is street parking, but we found a spot right outside without any issues. The food is fresh and flavored well, and the menu is way bigger than I expected. They've got everything from pho to curry to classic Japanese dishes. We tried the chili cauliflower, asari pho, and the hotpot with cod and they were all so tasty. The asari pho was very savory and the clams were clean and flavored well. The hotpot was exactly what I was looking for, a light balanced meal with yummy sesame dipping sauce. The chili cauliflower was perfectly seasoned and not heavy at all. We had the yuzu sorbet as a palette cleanser, and even that was elevated with orange, mint, and two scoops. Definitely coming back. The food was excellent I was a big fan of the spring rolls, you can taste the fresh ingredients and the peanut sauce was delicious as well. The chicken rice came was also very good, very authentic, and came with a nice dipping sauce and soup. One thing that really stood out was the presentation as well, comes on a wooden lunch tray like platter which I thought was a cute detail. Lastly, the beef pho was also very satisfying, the nice rich beef broth with jalapeños was went nicely with them. We went on a Saturday around lunch, no wait, got seated immediately. The hostess was also very friendly and attentive. The inside of the restaurant is also decorated nicely and gives a modern homey vibe. Would definitely come back! read more

Highly recommend!! The Roast Beef Carpaccio was so good and tender!! Loved both the noodles but have to say the Creamy Soy Yuzu Chicken one was more to my liking! The Cold Sesame TanTan Pho is a great summer noodle dish! Excellent service! Really liked the small and cozy vibe. read more
