Underwhelming. With a long line out the door on a Sunday morning, I was optimistic that this would be a bagel worth the wait. Unfortunately, I was wrong. To be fair, I was in NYC the weekend before I tried Rise, where I paid less for a classic lox sandwich that was a lot better than the Smoked Salmon sandwich I got at Rise. The key difference was the quality of the bagel, Rise just simply wasn't as good as the bagels I enjoyed growing up on the East Coast. Ultimately, I think the prices are what had me the most perplexed - everything just felt overpriced, especially for an average bagel. It was a trendy and cool space, but good luck finding a seat on the weekend. We ended up grabbing our food to go since we couldn't find somewhere to sit. I like what Rise was trying to do... Rise Bagel is one of the more well-known bagel shops in the Twin Cities and offers vegan egg, sausage and cream cheese. That said, it's not worth waiting in a line for this place (which is a given if you try to show up on a weekend). The Vegan sandwich ($7 + $3 for vegan sausage + $1.25 for vegan cream cheese) was passable. The bagel is fine, but not amazing (it was dry and under-toasted); the vegan egg is Just Egg, which is a popular, ubiquitous frozen product, and the vegan sausage was from a brand I don't know (I didn't love it, but didn't hate it). For the price, this was not a great value nor was it particularly high-quality or unusual (Peet's offers the same thing for a couple bucks less). The vegan cream cheese tastes okay but has gritty texture. Rise offers plain, scallion and jalapeno for its vegan cream cheese flavors. It's less of a cream cheese and more of a cashew cheese spread. Pro-tip: order online and skip the line. Second pro-tip: they sell out fast and are open only until 1 p.m. Get there well before noon to ensure you'll actually be able to get a bagel. I get it, everyone loves a good (or great) bagel sandwich and artisan (craft, if there's such a thing) bagels are a big thing (at least for those who eat carbs) and don't get me wrong, the bagels and sandwiches are good. Prices are a premium, which one should expect especially being located in North Loop and honestly when I think about the value relative to the chain bagel places like Brueggers and Einstein, Rise is better like maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10 versus the others at a 5 or 6. Rise is a very busy place and it's great they are open and running post-COVID shutdown. I ran in on a Sunday morning just before 9 a.m. to grab a quick egg and cheese bagel sandwich. Like I said, they are busy with several people sitting outside enjoying the day and their breakfast. Right when you walk in you see all of the take-out orders and it's great to see they are thriving. Numerous people waiting to get their orders as well and fortunately, I was able to walk right up and order a Classic sandwich, which is egg and cheese on whatever bagel you want for $6. If you want to add a protein, the price goes up to $8.50. I waited about 10-15 minutes, which was fine since I wasn't in a rush and as I walked out, I checked my food and there was a sausage but no egg so I turned around and went back to get the order corrected. The people working were busy but someone asked and I did get another sandwich - as I was walking out, I noticed there happened to be bacon as well as the egg - oh well, I certainly wasn't going back again so thanks for the little bit of extra value, I guess. Overall, it might look like a somewhat bad review but it kind of isn't ... I'm not a fan of people on Yelp or other services that just give glowing reviews and sugar-coat things all the time - that really diminishes the value of app/service and there are plenty of critics who don't like Yelp and others like Google reviews because people just give glowing reviews (thanks a lot to the social media influencers who probably need to be regulated a little more). We asked if they could toast them and they told us no. We ended up stopping here to meet friends before leaving back home and ordered 3 bagels and told her to toast all of them. We went to double check after the people behind us ordered to make sure she got all of them toasted and she said she only put ONE as toasted. First thank you to the postal worker who was in front of me in line for both the work you do and the recommendations you make about bagels! I had been anticipating going here for a long time so I was so excited that there was not a excessive line on a Saturday. Looking at the menu, I realized I had not come with a strategy, do I go with a bagel or a sandwich...then the heavens opened and the postal worker in front of me turns and asks what I usually get. I said this was my first time. She then excitedly tells me about the rosemary bagel and to pair it with the rosemary honey cream cheese. I took her recommendation. In addition to sample others I got a plain bagel and a everything bagel. The plain bagel was fantastic! The everything bagel was ok. But I think I might not be a everything bagel girl...as I think back to my years and appreciation to a plain bagel. Now the rosemary bagel...WOW! That was a treat! That right there was amazing! I doubled down and also ordered the rosemary caramel latte...WOW! It was so great! I actually called my chef friend and said I just had a food experience and told her about the rosemary infused breakfast. It takes a special level of flavors to happen for that to occur. After living in nyc for 3 years, we were hopeful that these would somewhat hit. These are actually the saddest bagels in the world. Maybe .5 oz of cream cheese on this thing. It tastes like a Thomas grocery store bagel. Got mine "double toasted" and it showed up this light.. (pictured). Disgrace to call themselves nyc/toronto bagels. We got there around 830 on a Saturday morning and it was right before the rush. Street parking was easy to find at this time. You can order to pick up or order when you arrive, which we did. My friend calls this place "bougey bagels" and she is absolutely right. Sometimes you just want to feel simultaneously fancy and hip, yet laid back and cool, modern and artisanal with your Sunday morning bagel and coffee. Rise checks all those boxes. This was my first visit, but won't be my last. Things I loved? Organic and locally sourced ingredients. Well designed space with enough different seating options that, while absolutely packed, never felt claustrophobically crowded or overly loud. Delicious looking menu with enough options to make it difficult to choose and will beg me to return. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan friendly offerings. And most of all, a really tasty breakfast sandwich. I had the "Harvest" on a rosemary bagel (organic egg, kale, mushrooms, caramelized onion, garlic cream cheese). Super yummy and I'd highly recommend it. My friend enjoyed her salmon breakfast sandwich, too. The oat milk cappuccino was delightful and came up quickly so I could sip it while waiting for our sandwiches. Things I didn't love? They ran out of bagels. Wtf, a bagel place ran out of bagels on a Sunday at noon? Yep, they sure did. And had to start turning people away. Although my friend and I totally enjoyed our bagel sandwiches, we both wanted to grab some more to go before leaving. Nope! Scratch that idea. Not such a bougey moment. Recommendation to Rise management to be better prepared for Sunday crowds, and if you're open until 3pm and in the business of selling bagels, make sure you can bake enough of those bad boys to satisfy your customers. Just some humble advice from lil ol me. To their credit, it was totally packed upon arriving around 10:30am with a steady ordering line about 10 people deep. Back to some other positives though, on top of the all day breakfast, they had some lunch sandwiches and even tomato bisque soup that I'm eager to try next time. Rise Bagel is the perfect brunch place for a Saturday. The neighborhood is safe and quiet. There's plenty of street parking around the area. There was a line when I arrived, but it only took like 5 minutes for me to place my order. They only took 5 more minutes to prepare it. The bagel was delicious. I grew up on the East Coast, so I have a particular soft spot for a bagel and schmear, and I have a particular weakness for a bagel with a lovely slice or three of lox, capers and red onion. So Rise has been on my list since it opened and we finally made it there - as luck would turn out, twice in one weekend for reasons I won't get into here. So overall I like it a lot. The bagels are super fresh. The cream cheese options are not only inventive but interesting. And the place itself is very modern and industrial looking while also being warm at the same time. The staff is very patient and nice. (I felt very bad for the poor guy who had to keep coming out of the kitchen and shouting people's names - surely there is a better and more efficient way to do that, no?). A couple of pro tips based on our two visits thus far: -Grab a table if you see one open -Recycling and composting are available, plus trash, so separate thoughtfully! -Water and coffee fixins to the right of the counter where you order kind of tucked in the corner I will say that as good as these bagels are, and they are really good, they still don't quite scratch the itch for a home-like bagel. There's something about it (some of you will know what I'm talking about). A good East Coast bagel has a certain flavor and mouthfeel to it. It's very distinct and very important. These bagels don't have that. But they are still mighty fine bagels and arguable some of the best if not the best in the Twin Cities. The bagels here are made fresh daily and are such good quality! I got the Lox sandwich and the salmon portion was very generous. Overall, the sandwich was a little on the dry side, but their signature Rosemary latte was AMAZING! I wish that the salmon was flavored with a little something, but the everything bagel I got it on added a nice touch. It was also VERY filling! I ate half the sandwich and had to save the other half for later and I usually have a huge appetite. Been meaning to try Rise for a while and finally got to check it out this lovely Saturday morning. They have indoor seating with tables, a bar by the window and a few soft seating areas. They have a couple outdoor tables too but not many. You can get a bagel with a variety of spreads to choose from or a breakfast sandwich from their menu. All the bagels are made in house and there were tons of staff busy to replenish the bagels all morning. Unfortunately we were not here early enough end they were out of some of their bagel flavors- I have a hunch that their rosemary bagel is the most popular- lots of people were asking for it and they had run out. We did the artisan sandwich with an everything bagel instead. It was tasty! Only thing that could have been better was the sandwich seemed like it was kinda put together in a rush and there was a really tasty apple mustard on it but only in some bites, would have liked it to be more consistent throughout the sandwich. Food was good and a little specialty bagel place in the middle of chain central was a nice change of pace. I would note, it seems to get busy FAST. We got there just before 8 (when they open) and there was probably already a half dozen people ahead of us. When we left, 15 minutes later, the line was out the door. Ok, now the food. I had the Migas. While it was tasty, holy Hannah, what a flippin' mess. I was glad we decided to grab a spot at a table because this in the car would have been disastrous. When Rise first opened Minneapolis was basically devoid of non-chain bagel shops so Rise rose to prominence quite quickly. In those early days they had seven "all-day breakfast" options, two "open-faced" options, and four 11AM and later lunch options. During the pandemic Rise announced that due to supply chain issues they had to cut back on offerings. At the time that was completely understandable. Now, in 2023, to have only six total offerings that lack the whimsy and creativity of the early menu (the open faced Wonton bagel and the Migas come to mind) is a lame shame, and you don't even get a free house-made pickle anymore. I'm glad to see more independent and pop-up bagel spots continue to open in Minneapolis, but it makes me sad to see an early pioneer like Rise become more boring than Bruegger's. Also, the in-house coffee is pretty mid. Walk a couple of blocks to FRGMNT for the good stuff. read more

Pro Tip: Use the Yelp app to find the entrance. It's been a while since this spot opened. We visited on a Monday morning, which we figured would be a calm time for such a popular place. Still, there were two people ahead of us... but not for long. The fellow at the cashier spot was efficient and the folks in back handled the orders expertly. The space is beautiful. If I worked nearby, every coffee break would happen here. Tall ceilings, wooden flooring, big windows that are glorious on a sunny day and very open seating make it a very welcoming place. An old-school coffeehouse feel inside an industrial-like building. Fresh, uniquely-baked organic bagels with fantastic vegan options. Have a bagel with some in-house-made cream cheese and accompany it with some strong espresso (which doesn't come out of an espresso robot). Lines can be long on the weekends, which I would attribute to a loyal customer base that doesn't mind the wait. There is only one location, but that just gives Rise that much more character. P.S. Don't be deterred by the huge construction site that Rise currently sits in because they do have some solid bagels. For our first breakfast stop in Minneapolis, we stopped by Rise at around 10am on a Friday morning. As native New Yorkers, we take pride in a lot of things and bagels is one of them, so it was going to be a tall order to impress us. The area where Rise was located was a bit secluded, but we managed to trek (drive) over. In New York, we're typically used to deli-style bagel shops, so Rise was a bit of a change up. It was a complete 180 with its more modern décor and ample spacing inside. The menu was smack dab right above the cash registers so it couldn't be missed - Bagels & Spreads to the left, All-Day Breakfast Items to the right of it, Lunch next to that and Sides on the right. We were here for bagels and breakfast, so we basically ignored everything on the right. All of their bagels were showcased in a glass display near the entrance and they listed, at my count, 10 cream cheeses and a number of other vegan and organic spreads on the spreads menu. On the All-Day Breakfast menu, there were your classic egg, cheese, meat sandwiches along with some lox sandwiches. This was probably going to be our only trip to Rise, so of course we wanted to go "all out". We ended up getting a Lox breakfast on an everything bagel, open-faced and the lemon blueberry cream cheese on a poppy seed bagel. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why the open-faced lox bagel costed $2 more than it when it is closed, but go figure. First, the Lox breakfast bagel was excellent. The generous serving of lox sat on plain cream cheese with some red onions, capers and dill on top. To be honest, since it had been a very long time since I had lox and it's not something we order all of the time back home, I have to admit that this review of it might be a bit biased. With that said, the lox + cream cheese was still very tasty and had just the right amount of lox to cream cheese. The everything bagel that the lox sat on was OK as we didn't taste too much of it with the lox and cream cheese really dominating the flavors. As for the lemon blueberry cream cheese on the poppy seed bagel, the cream cheese was very flavorful, but there was just too much of it. I rarely ever complain when I get too much of any food, but the cream cheese was really spilling out with every bite and the cream cheese was a bit too whipped for me. The cream cheese had a very soft texture and was on the border of being a bit liquidity. There is also a drink menu here for any of you coffee or tea lovers, however they do offer free water where the condiment station is. This real life person left Rise Bagels with the impression that it was good (3 stars) yet overrated (5 stars).    Born and raised in the New York Metropolitan Area, I grew up eating bagels. I know outstanding bagels from good and poor  bagels. Unfortunately west of the Delaware River it is difficult to find New York style bagels. So, on the one day that we overslept the Embassy Suites Manager's Reception Breakfast; my dad, brother, and I decided to walk from the heart of downtown Minneapolis to the North Loop District.    From the downtown Minneapolis Embassy Suites and hotels in the vicinity of Hennipen and 6th, getting to Rise Bagel is an interesting walk. From level 2 of Embassy Suites we hooked up with the Minneapolis Skyway System in City Center. The skyway continued through the Target Center and Target Field. At the south-westernmost end of the skyway system it dumped us off in a gritty part of the warehouse district where we passed Sex World and top less bars. Turning left onto northbound Washington Avenue the scenery changed for the better. We walked  into the North Loop where attractive converted red brick lofts and businesses consumed the landscape only a couple of blocks west of the Mississippi River. Ultimately it would be a challenge finding Rise Bagel. It is located in a historic red brick building slightly off the beaten path. At the time of this writing the road is a torn out dirt road that brings up images of horseback riders approaching the business instead of cars.    When we finally arrived inside Rise Bagel, it was almost full. My dad managed to find a seat in the relatively spacious bagel shop. According to my research, this is a relatively new spacious bagel shop that opened in 2017 inside a building that at one time was a chocolate factory. With its new use as a bagel factory specializing in old world artisan bagels with organic ingredients, customers get to see the bagel making in action. At the left of the counter there is a spacious open kitchen where the staff makes the bagels. On this busy rainy morning they were making lots of bagels.    After seeing the prices, I can say that they rise to the top. Some of their prices would be at home in the MGM Grand. At Rise, a bagel with cream cheese costs $3.25. That isn't even a true sandwich. And it doesn't include a coffee. This leads into the price of coffee. A cup of coffee that in my opinion was inferior to the coffee house chains cost more than $3. To make matters worse the prices rise to the occasion when a refill costs more than $3. To this real life person that grew up in bagel country, refills are usually complimentary at the same time that they never exceed $3. This is an area where Einstein Brothers Bagels has a mom & pop bagel shop beat. At Einstein Brothers Bagels you can get a small cup of Caribou coffee for around $2 with self service refills. There was no way that I was spending $3 on a bagel shop coffee refill. My attitude was that we can have a change of scenery and walk a couple of blocks south on Washington Avenue to resume the conversation in Dunn Brothers Bagel. From a business perspective this is a poor policy. Maybe if they served me a free or reduced price coffee refill I would of encouraged my family to hang out a little longer on the comfortable couch and we might of spent more money on bagels. Speaking of prices, $13 is a bit high for a lox bagel sandwich. The menu also seemed limited to the bagel shop menus I grew up with and Einstein Brothers Bagels. For example, they did not offer egg salad on a bagel.    I ordered a poppyseed bagel with jalapeños schmear ($3.25) and coffee (over $3). It was a good bagel.   Ultimately, this is just the opinion of one real life person based on his real life experience in Rise Bagel. Obviously several other real life people have a different one. Best bagels outside New York. Crunchy exterior with a nice chewy interior. The lox and whitefish is right up there with Zabars.
