I went to Rise N Dine today for the first time. The rest of my family frequents the place. What a surprise! (I am typically not a fan of coffee houses.....) It was clean, including the bathrooms. Great little breakfast place. The inside is really cute with a fire place in the center. The portion sizes are huge though! I got the volcano omelette that came with hash browns and pancakes. I definitely could have shared it with someone. My friend got the American skillet with toast and said it was great. So now that we have a little munchkin, it's harder to get out for a dinner date. We've been exploring more brunch places in the North Shore and damn, I think we have almost exhausted our options within a 15 mile radius. We've always passed up this place but for some reason never stopped in. On the coldest day of the year we made a trek up here. Since no one was on the road, not only did we get here fast but we got seated right away too. Surprisingly there is a fire place and the waitress put us next to it, which was a nice touch. The menu is expansive. I liked that you can get frittatas and omelettes with crab meat. My au gratin frittata and his crab omelette were tasty, but his was better. The coffee is great here, Douwe Egberts I think. Pancakes as a side were also pretty good- so good in fact that I am contemplating getting an entree sized set next time we come. I saw a girl having hers with yogurt and berries and I overheard the waitress say that she liked hers with honey so she brought a side to the customer, just in case. So far, a winner. And it's a huge plus to find a place with a menu like this that is close to us! read more

I love places like this. Really small and compact appearance from the outside, yet cozy and homey inside. There is a center fireplace that really makes Rise and Dine feel like you just woke up and walked down into your family room. I came here with my mom on a Saturday afternoon and we were seated right away. The dining room was about half full. The service was great and our server was very attentive and ready for our every need. My mom ordered a poached egg scrambler that looked great with lots of potatoes and peppers. I went the sweet route and ordered the Red, White, and Blue Crepes. Let me tell you this, these were the BEST LOOKING crepes I have ever seen! Three big, huge crepes, one smothered in strawberries, one smothered in blueberries, and one smothered in cinnamon apples! The crepes themselves were a little healthy tasting and probably needed something to make them less healthier, but the sugary fruit made up for it, and I bet that's why they make the crepes that way so you don't go into a sugar overload. Bottom line: please order these if you like crepes and you will not be disappointed! The servings are big so this makes for a perfect brunch meal. I told myself I wasn't going to finish everything, but I did anyway! There's nothing wrong with one extra lap around the track tomorrow morning! Overall, great restaurant and I can't wait to return. We've been here 5 times and each time was excellent in regards to food, portion, price and service. Unfortunately this last time was not as good. I ordered the Greek style pork chops. Although the flavor was good, they were tough and over cooked. My vegetable medley had some woody parts or end part of the vegetable in which it stabbed the roof of my mouth. The potatoes were seasoned with lemon as Greek style usually is but they were actually sour. It tasted like sauerkraut. My husband had a strip steak and it was not medium rare as ordered. They were very nice and apologetic. Even though it was an off night it doesn't cancel out the other 4 dinners we had there. I will definitely go back. I think the chef was just having a bad night. My sister and I had breakfast here last Sunday. It was very crowded with people waiting inside and out. Food was good, service was good and fast. Only reason we will not go back is the noise level. The perfect French fry. Immaculate. But that's not what I got, I ate it off my buddy's plate. What I had was equally as remarkable, the Volcano Omelet. Don't get scurred, it's NOT volcanic heat by any means, it has some jalapeno in it but no seeds and no ribs which are what give it heat. No the volcano omelet was the first item I ever ordered there upon recommendation from my friend, who didn't know it but whose friendship hung in the balance on if the omelet was good or not. And his ride home. Suffice it to say he got a ride home (begrudgingly) from me. An omelet with skirt steak, mushroom, jalapeno, jack cheese, all in a delicate egg-wrapped magical package is something I only thought Disney could create, but alas, Rise N Dine did it and it was outta this world. The service was quick and friendly (like 5 minutes from taking our order to table delivery, Saturday morning at ~9am) the interior ambiance is diner but cozy diner, noise level just what you would expect, overall an uplifting, inspirational bordering on divine moment of tranquility at a diner. As a teaser they cooked too many fries for my buddy's delicate 7-year-old girl stomach and I ate most of them. The French fries are PERFECT. I repeat, perfect. Crispy golden brown on the outside, soft, fluffy on the inside, French fried potato bliss. My mom and I go there a few times a year and were very pleased with their recreation of the place; minor remodel with new owners. The food was still good as before, which was great to know and our waiter Sam was very courteous and friendly and checked up on us numerous times. (Which was super nice) Most restaurants the waiter or waitress serve you and you never see him/her again. There was little wait for the food and it was very tasty. I would recommend Rise n Dine for a breakfast place any day including Sundays. Mom and I go out on Sundays and on a few, we have to do breakfast since I work some Sun nights. This is a benefit of the doubt four star rating; probably more of a 3.5. Thought I'd try another breakfast spot and while I had been to this place several years ago, it's been so long that it seemed like I had never been there. Sought out one of my breakfast favorites - a lox omelette and yes they had it on the menu. However this one came with tomatoes and green onions - I'm used to grilled or raw onions only. So I ordered one, sans tomatoes along with an OJ. Well, when it was set on the table, I thought the waitress had forgotten to omit the tomatoes. However, upon further inspection, I discovered the bright red chunks were actually bits of lox - the cheaper food colored variety. Not that big a deal, I guess since one really doesn't need to use high quality lox in an omelette. The hash browns that accompanied were excellent - the stringy variety, not the chunky stuff that more places seem to be using. Lightly toasted English Muffin came out as ordered and the OJ was fresh squeezed - and pretty decent. Service was prompt and attentive - overall pretty decent - would be interesting to try some other dishes. When I do I'll come back with an update and we'll see if the four star rating sticks! read more

Great family style restaurant located not too far from the airport. Great type of place for breakfast or lunch. I ordered the two eggs and meat and out comes a plentiful serving of eggs sausage fruit and pancakes. I wasn't ready for the amount of food that came. Everything had a great taste and came out of the kitchen nice and hot. Went here Sunday for a late brunch (2:30pm). Does not look like much from the outside but definitely a "hidden gem" for breakfast food. It was pretty empty but the inside was inviting & the food we saw while walking to our table looked delicious I got the healthy french toast, which was very good & plenty filling. My friend got the rise n dine steak wrap, which he also said was pretty good. Overall the service was attentive, friendly & the place looked clean. The only complaints I have is that my waitress charged me for 2 extra coffees. I brought this to her attention, she apologized, took my card & said she would fix it. When she brought the receipt back, she actually overcharged me for another coffee, so I paid for 3 when I only had one. Not a huge deal or the end of the world but I felt that was a bit careless on her part & we felt like she was kind of rushing to get us out of there. We also had to wait an additional 35 minutes for the manager to come back so he could void the additional charges only for me to get my $5 back in cash (my original suggestion) because I didn't want a pending $66 hold on my debit card for breakfast. The food itself was very good and reasonably priced as well. One thing that I personally loved was the fact that she was able to deliver and process our check very quickly. I came here for breakfast two times and had the GF pancakes with the volcano omelet one time and the GF pancakes with skillet with corned beef hash (forgot the name) the other time. The skillet was awesome and the omelet was just so-so. I would definitely get the GF pancakes every time though. The one real knock I have is the coffee. It wasn't that good. I love trying new brunch places but always preview menus before going. I already knew I would be ordering the Santa Monica Frittata sans onion (eggs, red peppers, spinach, mushroom, cheese and avocado). It was actually really good and the highlight of our trip! My husband decided on the Tortilla Scrambler: tortilla chips, chicken, cheese and salsa on the side. He gets something similar at our favorite brunch spot, but today's really just seemed like something a kid could throw together at home, not something you'd be excited to eat at a restaurant. Both meals did come with pancakes. I highly prefer "doughy" pancakes over "well-done," so was not very impressed by the pancakes. Oh. And...they serve pumpkin pancakes year round (MY FAVE!), but I wasn't allowed to substitute them. Nope, couldn't even pay for that. I would've had to simply order them separately at full price. What. The. Heck. Finally, the coffee. Major bust. It was just bitter and no amount of cream or sweetener helped. I did like that they left the pot of coffee on the table, but just wish the coffee had some flavor. Overall, because I like to be honest, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you don't drink coffee. Definition of hidden gem! My first time here was a treat. My father told me this was a place he and his brother used to frequent so I decided to give it a shot. Does not look like much from the outside but when I saw the parking lot jam packed on Saturday morning, I knew it must be pretty good. Inside has a very pleasant home cooking feel. We sat in a small patio room which was really nice. Gets pretty loud in there though. But on to the important part... the food. I ordered the Big Kahuna which is 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, 2 sausage links and choice of either 2 pancakes or 2 mini waffles, and orange juice. Love waffles so went that route. Came out looking like it should be in a magazine. I don't usually take pictures of food but I was tempted. Every bit was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend this place. It's going to be a regular place for me. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I want to see if the second time is just as good. I'm confident. read more

My family and I were coming here for years before we decided to give it a break. After finding out there were new owners, we decided to give it another try. My daughter has severe peanut allergies and I am a vegetarian (not vegan). One of the owners came to our table to address my daughter's allergy. She was informed not to have the pancakes because he wasn't sure if they were nut-free. My daughter informed him that she has had them in the past and they were OK. The cooks just needed to cook them in a separate pan and use a different spatula. They did what she asked and she enjoyed them. My veggie skillet was OK - not great but OK. My husband said his Spanish omelette was very bland for him. What bothered me the most was after we ate, the owner came outside to talk to us. He stated that my daughter's allergy and me being a vegetarian was difficult for his cooks. I am sorry but in the restaurant business, they should be able to accommodate customers' allergies and dietary needs without being told how much of a hassle we are on the cooks. That, alone, did not make me want to go back. I'd rather go somewhere that doesn't complain about our dietary needs. read more

Everytime I come here, I always consider trying their lunch menu but I always find myself tempted by the breakfast foods. They have traditionals, as well as more eclectic options. My favorite is the biscuits and gravy. The gravy is thick, sausage-y and peppery. The biscuits aren't too sweet. I'm pretty sure the sausage patties are made in-house, they were almost the size of hamburgers! Keep an eye out for what looks like a 1950's "fallout shelter". The building is recessed so what you see from the parking lot on Milwaukee Ave. looks more like a "roof" with no building attached !!!! If you love diner's R & D Pancake Cafe is going to blow you away. It has all the trappings of a Greek fast food place, with a real emphasis on quality. On this cool Fall morning, I was glad to be seated next to the gas fireplace. My server was freindly, organized, and professional. Even on a busy weekend, neither the service or the kitchen missed a beat. The menu is extensive and filled with all your diner faves. Big plus is that the ingredients are "fresh". Imagine, fresh sautéed mushrooms and veggies in your omelette. I ordered the Anitra Skillet because (1) anitra is the "Italian" word for duck, and doesn't typically make it's way on to a menu at your typical diner and (2) add some crisp hash browns and some runny yolks, and I'm in heaven. I wasn't disappointed. The duck sausage , potatoes, spinach , peppers and cheese hash was delicious. Great coffee. Salads and sandwiches being served at the table next to me looked awesome as well. This is one of the places on our Sunday lunch rotation, coming in every couple months for some great home cooking. The restaurant is fairly clean for the amount of turnaround during their breakfast / lunch rushes. The decor is attractive and neat, and everything looks well kept. The staff is fairly friendly to very friendly - our last visit was great. Our server was attentive, helpful and friendly, making sure we had what we needed. Water is usually filled by the bus crew, though sometimes you may need to ask if it's busy. The food is very good. Most dishes are done with an American flair (i.e. Mexican dishes are not authentic), though the Greek dishes are as good as any. I tried a flatbread this visit, and it was excellent. I don't remember what it was called, but it had Mediterranean ingredients. Crust was perfect, and toppings fresh. Prices are in line for the food and service. The cleanliness was decent, but could use some work. There was silverware on the floor, and my knife needed a wipe down. Otherwise, pretty good. read more

2 things I need in my life: Diners and Q Tips. While Rise N Dine doesn't offer ear cleaning devices on it's menu, if it did they would be absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. On my first visit it was so good, I went and bought Lottery ticket immediately after lunch. I won the $5 back that I paid for it. I ordered the Rise N Dine Skillet and it was everything I ever wanted in a skillet, but without the hangover. When the restaurant names a dish after itself it usually means it's pretty decent, this however, was spectacular. If there weren't so many delightful treats on the menu, I would order it exclusively every time I go to Rise N Dine. Trip 2. I was just off work in Wheeling, but was expecting to get called in. Needless to say, I was as happy as a Yellow Jacket who just used his only stinger; not terribly excited about anything. I went to Rise N Dine because I knew that I had an outstanding skillet there the first time, so anything else should be pretty good, right? Wrong. It was outta bounds! My buddy told me to give the breakfast burrito a try, said it was the best he's ever had, 'Try it' he said 'You'll like it' he said. D*#n liar! It was the best breakfast burrito I've ever had, hands, down. Look, I don't know how they do it, but they do, and you will not regret ordering anything at Rise N Dine. Whatever you do, do not go back alone, you will need another person there to understand what you mean when you say "It's the best I ever had!" Ambiance is outstanding (fireplace given the season) wait staff is attentive and on point, prices are very reasonable, portion sizes are exactly right, and the food? See the previous 3 paragraphs.
