Stopping in on one of my neighborhood favorites on a chilly day and glad I did as the one of the daily specials is the fideo bowl with picadillo and pinto beans. Nothing hits the spot on a chilly day like some a warm fideo bowl and this one didn't disappoint. The broth of the fideo was seasoned well and blended well with the picadillo. The pinto beans were also well made with a nice flavor profile. I combined all in the same bowl and it all blended together into a symphony of flavor. Along with the home-made tortillas, it made for a very good lunch. Overall, the staff was friendly, and the food was great, so I look forward to coming back for more really good Tex-Mex food. read more

Y'all, I can't believe I haven't left a review here yet! My family and I have loved coming here for breakfast for years and it's high time I shared our love for this place. Our go-to dish? The Huevos Rancheros - with eggs over easy and sauce on top, with barbacoa. I LOVE IT and not just me; my husband, mom, and dad do too! If you're unsure what to order, this is the dish to get. Also, their menudo is fantastic, and I really like that they offer it in a mini size too. While we're regulars for breakfast, we recently stopped by for lunch. I ordered the Crispy Taco Plate from the lunch specials, which came with beans, rice, and iced tea. My husband also chose from the specials but ended up preferring my tacos. I went for one beef and one chicken, and while both were delicious, the beef taco was the favorite of the two. What's even better? We spent less than $20 for both our lunch special meals with drinks, including taxes, and that included complimentary chips and tortillas. In 2024, where even fast food can set you back way more, this is a great deal. The service is always great too! We've never had a problem here. Highly recommended! The food is your basic Mexican fare. I like how when you come in they know exactly what you want to drink and they bring it automatically to your table. Table spaces are pretty spacious and the ambience is a cross between Mexican street style and a traditional restaurant. The owner is very diligent on how everything is operated. They have great breakfast specials, but they expire at 10 AM. They have very good lunch specials also. They do close at 3 PM so no dinner option is available. read more

Sometimes the tacos is fresh and its delicious. Bacon well cooked and good ratio to bacon and egg. Then there were times where the tortilla wasn't fresh and my bacon was kinda burnt or not that well cooked like I like. My over all review is that it's good. You seat yourself and pay at the front. If I had a dime for every time I've passed a Tex-Mex joint on my way to work, I'd have $5,304.20.* My travels throughout the Alamo City have led me to innumerable Tex-Mex joints, some well known, some a little off the beaten path, and a few so obscure I wondered if I had unknowingly invited myself into a "casa de la abuela." Like most popular things, though, ubiquity often leads to complacency and mediocrity. As I pen this review, I struggle to count more than four outstanding Tex-Mex joints in the greater San Antonio area. Rita's Mexican Cocina is the very definition of run-of-the-mill Tex-Mex: heaping portions, cliched food, and several telltale signs of a kitchen cutting corners. Flour tortillas are a reliable litmus test for any Mexican restaurant. If the kitchen can execute a respectable tortilla -- one containing the holy quintet of ingredients, namely Sonoran wheat flour, warm water, lard, baking powder, and salt -- then dinner is off to a promising start. On my first visit to Rita's, my waitress assured me that the flour tortillas were made in house. Although undoubtedly homemade, the chalky, barely pliable frisbees that accompanied my Bandera Plate were a letdown. Their stiff texture pointed to an instant mix or all-purpose flour. No bueno! Guacamole is so inexpensive and easy to make from scratch that I wonder why so many restaurants rely on premade stuff. Perhaps someone behind the scenes at Rita's can explain, because the dollop of watery neon-green gloop served here is definitely not homemade. I might have been duped by its brightness (a squeeze of citrus can retard oxidation in fresh guacamole), but the unctuous, whipped texture was indicative of science-lab thickening agents such as guar gum or xantham gum. No bueno! The core components of my Bandera Plate -- namely one crispy beef taco, one beef puffy taco, and one beef enchilada -- were serviceable but average. Each component bore the same cumin-heavy, Tex-Mex-style picadillo meat (a plethora of picadillo...a picadillo profusion), but at least the beef/tomato/onion/cubed potato mixture was savory and satisfying. Several Yelpers have praised the refried beans that accompany every plate, but the allure of pasty, underseasoned mashed pintos eludes me. The most egregious offender at Rita's is unequivocally the taco norteno, an ironic celebration of the kitchen's worst offenders. A "toasted" (the kitchen's euphemistic parlance for "hard as a hockey puck") flour tortilla forms the base of a taco topped with a spoonful of gristly carne asada, a sprinkle of processed white cheese, and a dollop of the aforementioned glow-in-the-dark guacamole. I haven't a drop of Mexican blood in my body**, but I'm sure I could make a much better taco than this abomination. On a positive note, the servers are attentive and the restaurant appears to be clean. I considered adding an extra star for these reasons alone, but I just can't justify awarding Rita's Mexican Cocina a three-star "A-ok" rating. Sadly, by San Antonio's standards, Rita's is indeed "A-ok." The fact that I've dined here on three occasions proves that I'm part of the problem; I've eaten so much boring Tex-Mex over the years that I've become inured to its mediocrity. The time has come, however, for us to raise our expectations. I don't know how many times and I have driven by this place and never noticed it. I finally noticed a couple weeks ago and was invited to lunch This past Sunday. It was hopping. Parking lot was nearly full. Always a good sign. There was a short line to get a table, another good sign. I tried the Chili Relleno plate. So glad I did. This is a traditional style Relleno, lightly breaded with salsa on top. The insides contained cheese and picadillo that was very good. It came with Boracho beans and Mexican rice both of which were excellent. Yes, the tortillas were homemade. Of course there were the obligatory chips and salsa prior. The chips could use a little salt and the green salsa has a pretty good bite. Looking forward to another visit to try something else. read more

I've been eating breakfast every day for the past two years and always order the same thing. I get special order with my plate cooked a bit longer. Until today, there's never been a problem. I ordered the same today and the owner comes out to inform me that I will be getting my order the way they want to cook it. She informed me that after 2 years that they can't make my order the way I asked. How does a restaurant tell the customer how they are going to cook your food?! I will never eat here again. I've been ordering food from these for 2 years and their food is great! I usually get my food to go however these past two times I've eaten there. Not one time did anyone come over to see if there was anything I needed nor to refill my drink. When I gave zero tip the owner told me that if I don't tip then they won't want to service me and if her staff did something wrong to tell her. So I did. I felt pressured to give a tip. I always speak highly of this place and this will be my last time coming here due to that experience. I brushed aside the times when they would mess up my Togo order up and the owner would requested me to send her a picture via text of my food in order for them to remake it. My kids love the carne guisada tacos and the flour tortillas could compete for the best in the city. Had a great experience at Rita's this rainy morning. Walked in and was easily able to find a table to sit at as I waited for my other guest. The waitress was quick to take my drink order of water and coffee and brought both out quickly. Once my guest arrived we looked over the menu and ordered a pancake, eggs, and bacon plate and a couple tacos. The food came out fast and it was nice and warm! It was also delicious! Lunch specials are a good deal. I would honestly just travel down the road to Henry's puffy taco. Food was good here. Tortillas and chips taste homemade! I came here on a Saturday with my family for lunch. They don't have lunch specials at this time, but you can still order the combinations. I think I got the Lisa's special - 1 chicken fajita and 2 cheese enchiladas. Chicken fajita was good. Cheese enchiladas were nothing fancy, but also not overly greasy. Their guacamole was delicious!! Love it when they don't use all that filler tomatoes. I believe their tortillas are homemade so definitely try the corn too! Service is quick and friendly. Friendly service. Clean place. The food was just okay. I got huevo a rancheros scrabbled with a pork chop. Potatoes were basic. Beans were bland. The pork chop was just 2 small pieces. I will say the waitress did tell me but I wanted to try the pork chop anyway. My plate was so watery that I didn't eat much. We also ordered the bean and cheese nachos and those were pretty good but again the beans lacked flavor. This was a while back that I started this review. I left it undone...my bad In my humble opinion the quality of the food and the friendly service earned them 5 stars. I remember the rice and the beans [I had chalupas with a side order of rice] being exceptional. This is what I often refer to as comfort food* Other than that I only recall thinking this would be a good place to return to.... which obviously I have not! Tomorrow I'm headed back from a camping trip and will be traveling down that way. This was our first time here and today is Sunday and the time is 10:30am. I mention this to give you some perspective. My wife and I feasted on Breakfast items. She had the Ham & Cheese Omelet which was a chunky folded omelet with diced ham pieces and cheese and a side of Charro beans along with some homemade corn tortillas. (Usually comes with potatoes and toast). Very good choice. Delicious omelet with great tasting Charro beans and the homemade corn tortillas. I ordered a sampling of tacos which I always do when trying a new Mexican place. I ordered: Chorizo& egg on flour, Beef Fajita (on corn), Carne Guisada on flour, and a Chilaquiles Taco with cheese on flour. Man, oh man. Great choices. Chorizo&egg taco on flour was well mixed and had a good flavor. The Beef Fajita on homemade corn was tender and came with cooked onions & green bell pepper mixture. It was very tender and tasty. The Carne Guisada taco (@$3.19 ea) was very tender and the sauce had an excellent flavor. I ate that one up. The Chilaquiles with cheese taco was my favorite. Hot,fresh, and delicious. I ate this one up as well. Bit of spicyness but all in all very delicious. All of the food was "Hot,fresh, and delicious". Coffee was hot and medium bodied. Waitress ("Lupita") was excellent. Our water glasses never got further down than half and our coffee cups never ran dry. We will be back and you should come try this for yourself. It is a little out of my way but worth the drive because I truly believe they are the best breakfast tacos in "Leon Valley". Food ain't bad but if you want to get ripped off and pay six dollars a taco be my guest the last time I went to charge me four dollars a taco. They said she made a mistake change it to six dollars. This was an excellent choice for breakfast! If you were looking for a good breakfast tacos this is the place to go. Our order was perfect and our waitress was stellar! I had a Barbacoa taco with a slice of avocado and a mini bowl of menudo. Their corn tortillas are awesome. This place is not that good for the high prices. For my plate and coffee it was $12. And it doesn't even come with potatoes, those are $1.50 extra. Tortillas were old and hard to chew. Their salsa is very good. Coffee is weak. The beans were terrible, just tasted like chili powder. I wouldn't comment about it but the price for that quality is frustrating. I have been a customer of Rita's for many years. On Easter Sunday they messed up my order which was 2 bean and cheese tacos with a strip of bacon. I called and spoke to a gentleman who said they would replace both my tacos with the strips of bacon that were missing. When I called to place my order to go, Mary the lady who answered said they could only replace literally the two strips of bacon only. If a business owner can't see the mistake that they make and only wants to replace two strips of bacon because they're greedy on their food cost. Then they need to train employees to read the tickets clear and double check before bagging. They don't deserve my business! I was patient the day that they messed up my order considering I had a lot going on that day, I live about 15 mins away from their establishment so driving back again just for two strips of bacon that were already paid and owed is a no no is and another inconvenience. Note to the owner: shove your "policy!" And learn what good customer service is. read more

Very inconsistent....I've been to this location at least a dozen times over the last 2 years and in the last 9 months it has progressively become very inconsistent. I almost always get the same items.....Breakfast tacos. The tortillas are made in house and at times very good with just the right chew and texture. However, what goes inside has been very hit or miss....I get the bean and chorizo, Potato and chorizo, egg and potatoes, and egg and country sausage. The potato are flavorless and so greasy that it like eating cubes of fat. The eggs are some kind of egg mix not fresh eggs and over cooked to the point of yellow rubber. The chorizo has changed....had never been so greasy that when you pick up the taco to eat there is a pool of grease underneath. I really wanted to keep hoping that "maybe next time it would be like i remember", but I just cant any longer. I don't know if they have changed their cook in the last year or what exactly, but should consider looking at quality and consistence. read more
