I prefer the original Hayden over the one on NW Military mostly for the quality of food. The Pastrami is "Texas Cut" which means the slicer isn't set to Deli. The Pimento Dip is tangy and can be used as a spread. The menu describes the dip served with house cut chips & veggies. Alas, we just got chips. Service is friendly and reasonably quick. The ambiance is casual trendy but, a bit noisy. Background music is okay however instrumental music would be better suited to this interior. This location is newer with an upscale decor. NOTE: some maintenance is required in both restrooms. My date said the locks on the stalls in the ladies room were broken. The meal is a bit pricy for what was served. I wanted to love this place. The service was ok. Slow but fine, and it wasn't a packed house. Food was also ok, a bit more expensive than we'd expected but still ok. We've tried going on three occasions for pastrami and they've sold out...chili cheese fries are not what we expected, tasty but dry. My Mom and Dad got a Hayden Burger and Patty Melt. Both were large portions and delicious. The French fries here are colossal and taste great. We didn't even need the ketchup but my Mom can't live without it. My Husband had the Frito Pie Chili Cheese Burger with fries. It was goood! I ordered the Build Your Own Omelette with Swiss, mushrooms and caramelized onions. This was a generous 3 egg omelette with huge breakfast potatoes that were perfectly seasoned. I didn't even need to add anything to my omelette because the potatoes complemented the Swiss cheese so well. Mijo had an egg with bacon and the Keep It Simple Salad with a Raspberry Lemonade. Obsessed. I really enjoyed coming here with my fiancé for brunch. We came on a weekend and got to enjoy a nice sunny day in San Antonio by sitting outside on the patio. The food was so delicious and the portions were very generous. We like to get something sweet and savory which lead us to the barbacoa omelette with salsa verde. We also got the stack of pancakes which paired so well with the blueberry compote. I ordered a side of sausage and was pleasantly surprised when I bite into it and it had cheese. Fun place to visit because it takes reservations and you don't have to hope you get there and wait in line for hours. The menu is different and smaller than the original Hayden on broadway but there are still plenty of choices to select from. Staff was friendly and efficient! We have been talking about eating there for over a year and finally we found the opportunity. 1st and this is a pet peeve of mine, an appetizer should be served well in advance of the meal. Stopped into this new location on a mid-afternoon Friday. The first thing that struck me was the nice interior of the restaurant. We were seated promptly and the server greeted us soon after. The table was clean and the rocking seat was very comfortable. I did notice the considerable bar area... and while half of the restaurant certainly felt like a nice diner, the other half was a bar with music that was far too loud - which only created a distraction during a lunch service. So I ordered the Pastrami sandwich on the menu, and at a $19.99 price point, was expecting a mile-high construction of a sandwich the likes of Katz Diner in NY. To my disappointment, I got a regular sized pastrami sandwich with kraut and spicy mustard. That's where the disappointment ended. Other than the soggy bottom slice of bread, the sandwich was absolutely delicious and the pastrami tasted completely house-made. I ordered the salt and vinegar chips with the sandwich, not knowing they were house-made. It was certainly a big mound of chips, but they were over-cooked.. and left something to be desired. Also the pickle spear that accompanied the sandwich was the bottom of the barrel. It was barely cold and very limp. The service was fine, but not over-the-top, nor did the server seem very friendly. Finally, as far as the price point, a $20 sandwich that delivered on flavor but not on size was disappointing. The Hayden on Broadway was a frequent stop when it first opened. I loved their Ted Danson, Salmon Sandwich and Elaine's Big Salad. Therefore, I was very happy to see them open a Hayden closer to me. But this new Hayden has some differences. The Broadway one is more bougie, while Alon's is a bit more casual. It is also a smaller space, but clean and inviting. And service was efficient. Food is similar, but we were disappointed because some food items were not included in this menu. Missing were the Beet Hummus & Egg Toast and the Shrimp Noodle Salad, the two plates that we want to try. We were told they would be added to the menu at a later date. Thus, we went ahead and ordered something else. There weren't any big issues with this other Hayden, except for one: the music. There weren't a lot of patrons at the time we showed up, around 10:30, but at some point, the music volume was raised! It was loud enough to make communication challenging and uncomfortable. I wouldn't say the differences at The Hayden at Alon are bad, just a change. Food was similar, albeit with a more limited menu, that will grow, I was told, as time progresses. This was my first time to The Hayden and it might be my last. This was their first week and they have the service down! We arrived for Happy Hour and the drinks were good. We ordered the Pimento Cheese dip on the HH menu (not pictured). It was good. The pimento had some spice to it. The chips were overly seasoned though. We also ordered the Brussels for the table ( also not pictured ) and they were ok. I had the pork schnitzel it was good. The sauerkraut was different. The breading was good but also over seasoned. The German potato salad was tasty. My friend had the salad and there wasn't any dressing with it so we had to ask for it. It was good. My other friend who had the chicken fried chicken really enjoyed their plate. The sandwich was also good, but nothing extraordinary stuck out about it. The staff was super friendly and very attentive. It was a bit loud in the restaurant so just fyi. The place is smaller, diner style. The pricing was a bit high, but whose pricing isn't nowadays? This place! Wowzers! They have a few locations but we ate at the one by HEB as a whim after grocery shopping. My son loves to read reviews when making food choices and this place had great reviews. This is a nice place in the strip mall by the Alon HEB. We were seated quickly, there were several families in the restaurant, and, helpfully, they do have kids menus and crayons (and kids cups!). I ordered the Chili-garlic chicken sandwich with a side of a cup of the Matzo Ball soup. The soup was brilliant and the sandwich was good - war'ning - they do hide a ton of pickles that I do not remember in the description. We waited to be acknowledged at the door, we were seated and waited so long to meet our waiter that a person from the party had to get up and let them then know we had still been waiting. The same with the check, we had to wait a while before the server came back to the table. I never received a water refill. One drink was forgotten and had to be reminded. It's like a salad, only bigger! I love this place! It's a old style deli in the HEB Alon Shopping Center. The original Hayden is down on the Boardwalk on Broadway, but now the northside has our own Hayden! I got to learn about the Hayden when they had a Seinfeld Festivus Party, with a costume contest and everything. This delightful fellow showed up dressed as Kramer, who was dressed as Dr. Martin van Nostrand, with an Ascot, a pipe and glasses that he would tear off in moments of suspense. He won! Here's all that we got- a Reuben- amazing!! Piled high (SO HIGH!) with Pastrami on Rye with sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. One sandwich could easily feed two. The fried pickles that had a spicy sauce were a delightful pairing. We got the Matza Ball Soup- which was just like Bubbie used to make. We had to get an extra serving of the smoked whitefish. It's served with homemade pita chips and a deep smoky flavor that's divine. The restaurant is reminiscent of the diner from Seinfeld. It's traditional, with bar seats and booths and waitresses who were super nice. The drinks are fantastic. The best thing is the professional level of ice that they use- giant bricks of ice that don't dilute your drink. Nom! read more

The urban diner decor is so cool and the combinations they create for their menu makes for delicious meals. I've always enjoyed the original Hayden and this location is just as good. Our waiter was really nice and attentive. The food was delicious as well as cocktails. I was surprised to see an extra charge for kitchen love. We are great tippers so I did not question it but I do feel it is wrong. If the owners cannot afford to pay their staff they should not have built their restaurant in a pricey strip center. I think it would also come back on the waiters tip when people notice this they will tip less. It also lends waiters to have to address this if a patron gets upset and this is equally wrong to put staff in this position. read more

The food was phenomenal, my drink was perfectly crafted and the service was quick. Our server was engaging and made sure we were taken care of. Okay everyone I was extremely hesitant about this review. I have actually put it off for months. About 2 months to be honest. The staff was friendly at this location however it was not very well ran. When I say tan I waited 20 min until someone came over to my table to ask me what I wanted to drink. The drink was an additional 16 minutes at that time I placed my order. I was waited about 28 min for my order to come out. During the order which was a lovely pastrami sandwich got to me I placed a second drink that took about 20 min to arrive. I went there not during a busy hour or time. It was fairly empty. A few people in the sitting areas but it was right after happy hour ended about 30 min after and some people were seated at the bar. I'm not sure why the service was so long when I did see a very well staffed restaurant. However I won't be coming back to this location. The food it a pretty price however it was tasty. I suggest you check it out yourself. Try both locations. But not sure what was going on the evening I was went.
