SFUSD failed immigrant and ESL students like me…read more As a former SFUSD student, my experience was that the district did not provide meaningful education, safety, guidance, or protection for immigrant and ESL students. ESL was supposed to be a bridge. In my experience, it became a low-expectation track. ESL science and history classes did not provide the academic structure, English support, reading/writing training, or serious guidance needed to prepare students for college-level work. Students were left to figure things out on their own, and the system treated that as "learning." That is not education. That is neglect. My family was not properly informed about the risks of ESL placement, how to exit ESL, how placement could affect academic tracking, or how to access stronger academic pathways. I was not clearly informed about honors/AP options, community college pathways, career training, adult school, independent study, continuation school, GED/high school equivalency options, CHSPE/proficiency options, vocational programs, or youth employment programs. A school district should not leave immigrant families to discover these pathways years later by themselves. The problem was not only academic. I also experienced bullying, insults, racial discrimination, and humiliation in the school environment, including PE. I did not experience SFUSD as a system that protected vulnerable students. There was no clear, accessible, student-centered complaint or help mechanism that I understood. I was not meaningfully taught how to report bullying, discrimination, harassment, unsafe situations, or abusive dynamics. I was not taught how to document incidents, seek outside help, or understand my student rights. This caused long-term damage. I did not simply "struggle in school." I went through an educational environment where language barriers, immigrant family limitations, low expectations, bullying, racial discrimination, lack of counseling, lack of rights education, and lack of career guidance overlapped. That kind of system can derail a student's confidence, academic direction, career planning, financial judgment, and trust in institutions. SFUSD may have policies on paper today, but policies mean very little if students do not know how to use them, families are not informed, and adults do not actively identify when students are being harmed. A real support system should not wait for a child or teenager to already understand legal language, civil rights, complaint procedures, or alternative education pathways. My criticism is not directed at every individual teacher. There may be good teachers and good schools within SFUSD. My criticism is directed at SFUSD as a system. In my experience, the system failed to protect and guide students who most needed structure, advocacy, safety, and clear information. ESL should never become academic isolation. Language support should not become a low track. Immigrant students should not be left to survive bullying, discrimination, poor guidance, and institutional confusion on their own. SFUSD needs to do much more than offer language programs. It needs real accountability, real family communication, real anti-bullying and anti-discrimination protection, real sexual harassment and student safety education, real counseling access, real complaint mechanisms, and real college/career pathway guidance. A school district should not only teach students English. It should protect their dignity, rights, safety, and future. In my experience, SFUSD failed to do that. A school district that fails to confront racism does not remain neutral. It creates an environment where racism becomes normalized, and vulnerable students are left to internalize the idea that humiliation, exclusion, and racial hostility are simply part of school life.

From intake to our final class, the staff made sure that the scheduling process was a breeze, and that visits did not fall short of expectations. They have an excellent staff dedicated to your child's development, and the office is pristine. Not just clean; very well kept. I noticed that there wasn't one tear on a book or broken toys. They put lots of effort into upkeep, knowing well that toys and books can take a beating with younger kids. East Bay Child Development Center has terrific speech therapists and therapists specialized in helping in all other types of child development, including but not limited to physical therapy, etc. We went through 2 different speech therapists and 1 or 2 therapy students which was a little harder for our son to grow accustomed to because it would take him awhile to warm up (which I've learned isn't unusual for any development therapy center), but each therapist tried their absolute best to ensure they were giving him the utmost care and attention.

Now he's 12 years old saying he's not a good fit. Shame on you to say that to me. You can't discharge him that's illegal. My son is trying with his speech and he has rights in California to receive speech therapy any age. Discrimination by the ability, then age, what's next because his sister running around the office and also I was on the phone? For that lady who spoke with me today over the phone couldn't wait on me. And making me feel like I was being fired from the job, she sounded rude and said my daughter was running around the room and I was speaking loud on the phone so the excuse to fail my son. Then changed her words saying he's not a good fit and he runs fast and wants to push the kids. She needs to find more excuses for her to dismiss him. You don't know how hard and challenging to be a mother of autistic kid. I finally thought I have him his speech going and then you locked me up like shutting my mouth. Fast forward to today, now my son attends Modern PlaySpace at the new location! Sandy has not changed, always so warm and friendly. All the new teachers I've met are just as amazing. Modern PlaySpace is always so clean and organized. When you walk in, it's so inviting with all the toys and colors. There's so many fun activities for the kids. My son is within autism spectrum and at Modern PlaySpace all the activities are so supportive of his needs. They do lots of sensory friendly activities and the kids practice living skills. Not to mention we have been accommodated with having my son's therapist arriving to give him his session there. All of my son's therapists love it at Modern PlaySpace too. We're honestly so grateful to be at Modern PlaySpace working with Sandy and all the teachers. Never in all my years have I ever felt pressured in any way. Hack reactor was an amazing program, and I can attribute my success in the field to it. It was fun,…read moreand intense, and I distinctly remember it being a work hard, get rewarded type of scenario. The instructors were fantastic, and the curriculum really taught you what you needed to know to succeed as an engineer in the valley. As grateful to the program as I am for what I learned there, what really amazes me is the support I continue to get from its Alumni Director, Marlene Tang. Marlene is truly a lighthouse in the dark when it comes to actually functioning as a software engineer in the industry. Sure, Hack Reactor had gotten me in the door, but Marlene not only keeps me in the building, she pushes me to climb to the top. She gives support in working, learning, growing, promoting... you name it, she's there. Recently, I left my previous company and started looking for my next home. I brought it up, and as usual, without hesitation, she dove right in, set up meetings with companies, reviewed resumes, emails, and made sure I stayed on track. I just signed my offer, and she was a huge part of it. All I had to do was study! I honestly don't know how she does it all with an ever growing network of Alumni. In addition to being a tremendous resource when you reach out to her, Marlene actively reaches out to the Alumni network to collect feedback and make it even better. She is ever present and if for some reason a HR graduate forgot about the immense support system available to them, it won't be long before Marlene is there to offer her precious time and energy. All in all, Hack Reactor was an amazing experience and I'll never forget it. The real start of the show, and the one thing that continues to provide immense value on a consistent basis is its extremely dedicated Alumni Director, Marlene, and her superhuman program. I can't emphasize enough that this is the one thing that puts Hack Reactor leaps and bounds ahead competition. I went through hack reactor a while back and am leaving a review…read more This part of the review is in hopes that hack reactor addresses some of their issues: During the cohort, there was a student that was expelled due to inappropriate jokes during a show and tell. However there were many other instances of inappropriate behavior never addressed. 1. There was a male student that had at the same time of the show and tell repeatedly walked around behind the audience checking out female staff and students backsides. He never faced any issues. 2. The male students had at points discussed female students and rated them based on looks and date-ability. 3. There were lunch trips that weren't appropriate. 4. Female students were judged differently based on their behaviors aligning with certain gender norms than male students. This directly did affect some of the ways their career paths developed. To hack reactor, stop enabling sexism even at the entry level to the field. Be more aware of biases within the instructors and have some training. In terms of the course merits based on their ability to help land a job: 1. I think the lead instructor at the time was good. The instructors for the actual cohorts varied in their experience and their ability to help students. The progress, results, and the cohort's feeling of togetherness (which does play a huge part in final team projects) depended in part on the cohort's instructors participation or willingness to be a leader. I think in general the cohort instructor I had was not as helpful nor as experienced to really be effective in teaching others. So while the overall course was decent at giving barebones fundamentals to some of the concepts in software engineering and structure to those that need it, the impact varied based on your cohort instructor. 2. The course is really geared to be successful for certain people. The prereqs does filter a lot of people out. The financial cost filters even more out. I think that for a lot of people trying to enter the field, it's not the best option available. Especially since the job market entry rate is more reflective of the individual's ability to ace interviews and the current job market availability and not the boot camps ability to necessarily train people.
