RJ Skillets is a 10/10. it's an intimate spot with only about 10 tables. It has a very Mom and Pop feel which I love. The food was as if Abuela was in the kitchen cooking. It was absolutely delicious. I had a Omelette which they kindly made with just egg whites for me. Dude had the Hash Skillet with homemade tortillas. The service was the best I've experienced in a while. They were so kind and friendly and tried to anticipate every need. I'll definitely be back! After all it's only half a mile from my house. I'm sadly disappointed with the food and cleanliness. My cup had lipstick marking on the rim, which I felt was totally forgivable after I asked for a new glass. But my food was below mediocre. The middle of my pancakes were raw -- literal batter in the middle of both pancakes. The texture of the cooked pancake portions were dry and didn't taste that great. If you go here, I imagine the Mexican food options might be better in general. My friend got chilaquiles and those were ok; she said she'd give this place 3 stars. A wonderful little gem...not your typical Mexican restaurant. Everything looked and tasted so fresh. We went here for breakfast, got the mole enchiladas with brisket. Quite the entree...two hearty enchiladas stuffed with the tastiest brisket, topped with two perfect over easy eggs and an incredible mole sauce. A great deal for the price. Usually I don't like sit down style Mexican restaurants as much as taco trucks/taquerias since I'm a taco guy and like quick, cheap street tacos mostly. But we stopped in here since I was with my dad who doesn't like tacos as much and I thought this place seemed a bit Americanized and milder for him. While they do have many of the standard rice & bean enchilada/burrito standard fare, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety. I chose one of the seafood combos - Camarones ala Mojo de Ajo, which was a bowl of shrimp sautéed w/ butter and garlic and served w/ beans, rice & tortillas to make your own Shrimp Tacos. Very good. I've also tried their Mole Enchiladas which is my favorite dish of theirs (i believe only available on breakfast menu so before 2 pm I think). I just got veggies w/ it but it was quite tasty, and they had quite a variety of veggies in there. I've also went back to try some of their standard breakfast items (they have some American classic options like pancakes, French Toast, and a limited kids menu for the less adventurous eaters). The skillet was pretty good w/ brisket and the salsas as well as the pancakes. If you're looking for brunch on Alberta, whether you like Mexican or not or vice versa i would say this is a great spot, never a wait either which is how some ppl judge the quality of the restaurant but rest assured no line bad food here. read more

Fantastic breakfast and service at this family owned and operated business on Alberta. The interior is decorated like a comfortable Mexican home. The daughter got the Chilaquiles, which she loved, and I got their Green Chili Brisket Omelet. OMG! What a perfect ratio of meat to egg to cheese! Wonderful! The flavors within the brisket were deep and savory, and the three types of salsas served on the side allowed you to add just as much blend of flavor and heat you wanted. Brilliant! We also got a side of the fluffier and tastiest pancakes we've had in quite some time. The daughter kept saying how we had to come back for dinner soon. No problem for me! This restaurant was a very good place to grab some good authentic food. Good amount of seating and very nice service.

The food was really good and the servers were pleasant but it took longer to get the food than I would've thought and it wasn't busy.

I'm not a fan of using hyperbole when describing events and experiences, so when I claim something to the effect of "JRJ Skillets is one of the best breakfast places in Portland", I truly mean it. Everything about our experience here was impeccable, from start to finish, and more so than any other restaurant in recent memory, left a lasting impression on us that will be hard to beat. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately by Ramiro, our fantastic server, whom we would come to learn is also the owner of the restaurant. He cordially escorted us to a window seat, provided information on the day's specials, as well as a quick tour of some of the favorites on the menu. Many of the entrées available are breakfast standards with a Mexican twist, but there are some wonderful Oaxacan specialties as well, such as the Mole Breakfast Enchiladas, that left us struggling to decide what to settle on. Although I was tempted otherwise, I went with the item that I'd seen online and had captured my attention: the Scramble Hash - a heaping helping of eggs, veggies, cheese, potatoes, onions, sausage (my choice of protein, but many others were available) and herbs, piled on top of one another in a cast-iron skillet. An array of sauces were provided as well: mango habanero, verde, and a third that I failed to identify, but was splendidly savory and spicy. We took some extra of each home with us, for our leftovers! My wife ordered the chorizo omelet: a truly massive, almost calzone-sized pocket of eggs, cheese, delicious, non-greasy green chorizo, and a side of delicious sliced potatoes. We were also treated to a single pancake, free of charge, just to give us a taste of what we were missing. I'm normally not a fan of sweet things, but this fabulous flapjack has me seriously reconsidering that stance: rich, creamy, vanilla-y, the perfect density and consistency: not too soft, not too hard. Wonderful! Again, Ramiro and company performed at a level that desperately needs to be emulated elsewhere. Everyone was welcoming, courteous, personable, friendly and knowledgeable. Although JRJ Skillets has only been around for about a month, there is a level of professionalism and experience here that few restaurants ever attain, and this speaks to the character and talent of the mastermind of the operation. JRJ Skillets is an easy to miss, hole-in-the-wall tucked away on the heavily foot-trafficked Alberta street, and surrounded on all sides by plenty of competition. That said, passing this place by is to settle for an inferior dining experience. My wife and I both expressed to each other an earnest and urgent desire to return, not just for breakfast, but also to see how Ramiro and crew pivot to lunch and dinner menus. I haven't been this excited about a restaurant in Portland for a long while. Incredible food, (over)filling portion sizes, excellent prices, unparalleled service: I have nothing but rave reviews for Ramiro and JRJ Skillets. A new authentic player to the Mexican food scene. While this term is subjective, many would probably concur that this isn't "Portlandnized" in the likes of Tacovore or Por Que No. The proud and passionate owner/chef is from Mexico and is striving to make this a top tier consideration for sit down Mexican food. The mole made from scratch is one of the best I've had in PDX. And I usually order chilaquiles whenever I see it on any menu, the version here is in the upper echelon. I topped mine with a very generous portion of salmon. My friend's seafood tacos looked scrumptious, while another's American-style breakfast portion was ample. The homemade chips, beans and rice are not an afterthought, all were a cut above. Lastly, the margaritas were a value play. The server was very friendly and the owner made his rounds, speed was above average fast. Outside seating was a plus, but inside looked very inviting. We were politely greeted and sat at our table. Wait staff was incredibly responsive and friendly. I ordered the Green Chile Brisket Omelette and my GF the Scrambled Hash Skillet. Delicious! Eggs were fluffy and tasty. Brisket was very flavorful. Loved the hash browns. I typically don't like crunch hash browns, but these were great! The flavors and service were divine! We were warmly greeted by a server who explained that the restaurant was just expanded. We came at a great time with no line and were seated promptly. The server gave us a bit of restaurant history and handed my small group menus. The chilaquiles (green & red) with brisket were incredible. We also ordered the barbacoa plate and I was impressed my the flair this dish. The barbacoa had a delicious hint of smokiness to it that I don't normally taste this dish at other restaurants. My favorite was probably the selection of salsas that were brought to the table. It included- habanero, mole salsa (not like your traditional mole), verde, rojo and another I can't tell recall. We ended brunch with churros con cajeta. One of the best Oaxacan brunches that I've had in a long time. I will be back with family and friends very soon. read more

Honestly, this might be my new favorite breakfast spot. The space is cozy, and there was no wait for a Sunday brunch seating which is astounding in Portland. The service was probably some of the best I've had in the city. The server was super friendly and offered lots of suggestions. Multiple people also checked in during our meal to make sure everything was going good. The food here is outstanding! I got the virgin strawberry margarita. It wasn't too sweet which was perfect. The mole enchiladas were the highlight for me. The mole is delicious and paired well with the brisket. We found this spot on Yelp and decided to try it in a whim; we are so glad we did! We were quickly greeted and seated on the patio with our pup, a bowl of water was already waiting for him. There were a good variety of options on the menu without being overwhelming, and a note that 75% of the food is sourced from local farmers. We both ordered chilaquiles and asked for a side of carnitas for our pup. The chilaquiles were delicious! Neither of us had ever had them before and now we aren't sure we ever want them from anywhere else. The side of carnitas was huge. The service was excellent and the entire experience could not have been better. We were surprised the bill was only $35 for all our food and drinks.
