Major disappointment. We were in town for the weekend and stopped by on a Sunday morning for breakfast. After ordering we sat at the table waiting for our name to be called. They were a little busy so we figured it may take some time. We waited 45 mins. After seeing other customers getting their food, that ordered well after us, I thought I would check on my order. When I asked about my order she looked at all hanging orders and said, yes they had the order. I asked when she thought it may be ready. She snapped at me and said "they were behind because customers keep coming up and asking for their orders". That was it - we went to the register and asked for a refund where we received even more attitude. Look, I understand getting behind it happens, but I won't give my money to a restaurant that treats customers so poorly. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

We came upon Roast & Toast one evening when we were very hungry and craving a good chicken salad. Visiting Petoskey on a trip up north, we came upon this cute cafe while looking for a dinner spot that did not have an hour wait time for seating. This coffee cafe was a slightly out of the box choice for dinner; however, they offered soup and salad--exactly what we were looking for! The salad was quite plentiful and had a good serving of chicken included. From the menu selection, this cafe seemed like it would be a great spot to visit for brunch or morning coffee. The coffee and tea menus sounded quite delicious and were posted on the wall for your choosing. The interior was inviting and had lots of room for seating. Some customers were even posted out doing work from their laptops, which looked like a great location to do so. Parking was located just a short walk up the street in a paid lot. Food was good! I had the grilled pesto sandwich on sourdough bread and I liked it a lot! That's the only reason I'm making it a 3 star and not lower. The atmosphere is what I didn't like about it. You could barely move from one side of the restaurant to the other. And for a first-timer, the menu and many, many other options were very overwhelming. The only food menu we saw was written on a wall and people were sitting in front of it so you couldn't even see all of the options. We walked in and we were immediately attracted to the giant chalkboard wall full of colorful drawings paired with the drink options. We ordered our food and sat down. The bottled drinks were not very cold... more like room temperature, so we had to actually get them in iced cups. We ordered the chicken Cobb pita, belt and pizza pita. The chicken pita was enormous and tasted fantastic. Also had a cup of soup and got the broccoli cauliflower cheese. It was so good I wish I had gotten a bowl of it! The food overall was tasty and had a homemade feel to it. The roast and toast is definitely the place to go if you are attracted to coffee, warm sandwiches, and an interesting, almost hipster feel to a restaurant. This was a great experience with good food. The food makes Denny's look like a 5-star restaurant and although the advertise getting their food "locally", save for a few items, they use Gordon Food Service for their overpriced food that looks like it's been sitting there for days. My daughter had the Cranberry Cafe Spinach Salad and loved it. My wife had the half sandwich and cup of soup which she loved. I had the Blackwich sandwich and Creamy Chicken Quesadilla Soup. It was wonderful. My other daughter had a special request sandwich which I won't go into, but she was happy with it. We loved everything about roast & toast. We will visit again. read more

Visited this place yesterday while we were on vacation in Petoskey. While it's a small place, and finding somewhere to sit may be a bit of a challenge, it's worth the wait. I tried the pesto grilled cheese sandwich (actually split it with my husband). Sharing it was a mistake. Wish we had ordered our own! Served with watermelon...what a nice touch! The bread was amazing and the sandwich was so yummy! Had to go back and order a coffee drink for dessert. It, too, was well worth it! I will definitely go back anytime I'm in the area! read more

this is such a cozy little place. i'm a college student and i looked up any cool places downtown and this caught my eye, so on some weekend i went down and wowie! i was pleasantly surprised. i settled myself in this corner in front of one of the windows and did my homework. i got some coffee and a muffin and they were both exquisite! fascinating staff, i told the person taking my order that it was my first time in a place like that and they were so nice and patient with me. highly recommend! read more

This was my first time at Roast & Toast. I went based on some friends' recommendation from a couple of years ago. Maybe it was better pre-pandemic and I am sure they need more help right now but that shouldn't affect the quality of the food. My English muffin was stale and my home fries were cold. As someone who successfully managed an organic coffee and tea shop for several years I love a great coffee shop and scrutinize it in equal measure. Upon moving back to Northern Michigan I was thrilled to see such a cool and edgy place in downtown Petoskey. I've read the reviews, and get why some are negative as they have some valid points, but overall I think it is a nice establishment with decent coffee (I have yet to try the food.) As for the cleanliness issue raised in other reviews, it could be a lot cleaner but the thing is when you have food and coffee (which stains easily) you are going to have less than pristine looking walls and counters and when you are super busy, you aren't going to get every little crumb.) I have been there about a dozen times and like the vibe so much, but found the drinks to be lacking in "kick". I hate, hate, hate their system for getting drinks to the customer and find that a little organization and training could improve this. Also, get rid of the soda machine and they might have room to line up drinks and it won't take as long for customers to get theirs. It is a coffee shop, not a diner. People can get soda elsewhere. That thing is a huge waste of space and it is ultimately hurting their business. Roast and Toast is so close to getting a five star rating for so many reasons, and I hope they eventually address the issues because I like going there a lot, and I found the staff to be pleasant. read more

I'm all about supporting the smaller coffee shops.. the problem is, NONE of them ever seem to live up to the hype and this place doesn't appear to be an exception. The reviews here seem to be the work of tourists who were happy to on vacation, and easily charmed by this place's artistic decor (come on, isn't everything better when you're on vacation?) .While some have described the interior as artsy, hip, or funky, the vibe the patrons gave the place was much more "spoiled Birmingham teenager" than creative or artistic. The definitely did not help the place in terms of authenticity. Don't get me wrong, it was not without it's charm, but I came here for coffee.. and for close to 4 dollars a piece for a 16oz coffee, they were both a swing and a miss. I had some peanut butter concoction that conjured little or no reaction from my senses, and my g/f had a coconut flavor drink that she had to go back and ask for more coconut flavoring... the girl behind the counter happily obliged and what little service we required was very pleasant... no complaints there. Not sure if it was an off day, but they were just over priced and not that good. Didn't try the food, and have little or no interest in soups that a lot of people have been complimentary about. I would probably go back, you just won't find me sprinting past the tables of androgynous teen-aged boys who are constantly flipping there hair like Justin Bieber, in order to try it again. read more
