May I just say, if nothing else, try their soup bar. I always forget to ask if they create the soups onsite, but even if they don't...YUM. Don't care. I've never, ever been disappointed ordering a cup or a bowl, and neither will you. The sandwiches are all quite tasty and fresh-tasting. Salads look good, too. I may veer over to that part of the menu one day. Smooth coffee with on-site (right?) roasting. I took a group of eight women here for lunch and all left with satisfied smiles on their faces. While swinging through Petoskey on a business trip, I couldn't stand the suspiciously spotty coffee maker in my hotel and went out in search of local caffeine. I wound up visiting Roast & Toast twice during my short stay there, once for lunch and then breakfast. It's a quirky place decorated with found memorabilia and run by friendly people in their early 20s. In Ann Arbor, something like this would be stricken with pretentiousness and students stuck behind laptops, but it seems locals and tourists of all ages frequent the place. And even in the off-season, the place fills up fast for lunch. I stopped by around noon on a rainy Wednesday in late October, and the line was nearly running out the door. The menu is sprawled all over one side on a blackboard. There's free Wi-Fi and a big shelf full of board games in the back. Right before I left town, I stopped by for a cuppa joe and their nutty French toast, which was this gargantuan, wonderfully eggy piece of bread covered in nuts and served with Michigan maple syrup. It was perfect for sharing - highly recommended, if you have a sweet tooth in the morning. read more

There are about 40 interesting coffee drinks to choose from, tons of freshly made sandwiches, a good selection of soups, not to mention several breakfast choices like burritos, french toast, and pancakes. Teenagers. Grunge. Dirty... And that's just the staff in this used-to-be good diner. Tonight I experienced: Horrible service, dirty floors and tables, and weirdo waitstaff that are just too cool... And by "too cool" I mean a pink mohawk, piercings, and lots of facial hair. Service was amazingly slow... 25 minutes for a sandwich. My date's sandwich was prepared wrong, but she opted to just eat it because of the confusion and slow service. There are better options for a sandwich... Occasionally, a restaurant experience defines your view of a town or a trip. On our little stop-over in Petoskey in September, my lunch at this restaurant made me love the town. This was an incredible sandwich. The bread was just amazingly soft and every ingredient was just so fresh and wonderful. I loved the fact that they didn't have an overwhelming amount of choices for sandwiches (like most sandwich places often do) but I LOVE the large variety of drinks you can order. I got a frozen latte type drink and it was perfection on a summers day. When we went, it was a group of 6 of us and we were pretty crowded but it was still a very fast service. It is slightly more expensive for the amount you get, but the quality is something that they definitely don't skimp on. read more

Roast and Toast is a fun, funky cafe with excellent house roasted coffee. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Soups are house made, daily, breads are baked every morning, and bagels are brought in by Johan's Bakery. Coffee drinks are super affordable (much better priced than a certain chain coffee shop, and definitely better tasting), and yummy! The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. It does get very busy at this hot spot, so they sometimes have little chance to chat. Don't take offense, they're just trying to get everyone served. My only criticism might be that the restaurant is very busy and looks worn out. I know they clean it, so I'm not concerned about cleanliness or food safety, but those who aren't familiar with it, might think it is dirty, even if it isn't. Really, it is clean, just ignore the age. Try Roast and Toast, you won't be disappointed. read more

About 10 years ago this place was great. Now it's just hit or miss. And mostly misses. I love the coffee, but the surly attitude from the wait staff keeps me away. Not to mention the multiple health code violations I've witnessed every time I've eaten here. And yes, I am servesafe certified. The Lake Street salad is my go to, and occasionally the soup if it hasn't been sitting on the counter for too long. I'd really like to see the owners take action and make this shop better than what it is now. It has so much potential. read more

Every time I visit Petoskey, I make sure to stop into this coffee shop/cafe. I've never had the food, but it always looks good to me. They seem to feature the Three Ss (soups, salads, and sandwiches). I really enjoy looking at their latest coffee creations and deciding which to pick. Today, I opted for the Thai Iced Coffee, which was a steal at under $2.00. Most of the specialty espresso drinks are at least a dollar more than that. I enjoy the names of the drinks, such as the Accidental Tourist, the Yorkie, the Construction Zone, and the Butterfinger Mocha (I mean, who could see those words and not want one?). I've tried some baked goods and they were very good, and large. This place seems to attract a bunch of different people: parents with kids and strollers; students getting work done; twentysomethings going shopping; and Amy Winehouse lookalikes hanging out and hogging tables for an hour. Okay - when we arrived (as first timers) we were super confused. Direction on what to do was super unclear to us and we couldn't even find a menu. No employee tried to help us and it was crowded and chaotic. Once we figured it out, we got a rude cashier. Ugh. But finally our moods were restored when we bit into our sandwiches - OMG so good. The bread is to die for. So big, soft and fluffy. The ingredients were super fresh and lots of veg options. The vibe (besides the chaos) is super cute and quirky. Probably the most unique latte I've ever had. Large size for the understandably high price, but the only downside was that the food selection was very basic. Definitely go if you want to get extremely good coffee, but maybe go somewhere else for lunch. read more

Great place for homemade soups, sandwiches, coffees and treats. Friend and I split the roast beef-cheddar and avocado turkey club sandwich which each were served on homemade bread of choice ( whole wheat, vegetable, sour dough). Not deli turkey or roast beef either, the real deal! I also had a chocolate chip scone which was crunchy on the outside but moist inside. I highly recommend. Lived in San Diego for a couple years, but I am from this area. There were cafés all over, but nothing compares to my roast and toast! Missed you guys! I'm glad to have this place back in my life... We came here because of the high Yelp reviews but were not impressed. French toast was dry, tasteless and yuck, food wasn't seasoned and lacked much flavor. It was very busy, loud, and hectic. Didn't know if we should sit down for a server or wait in a line. The bagels were good. read more

Stopped there this weekend for breakfast. I think maybe they are just trying to do too much at one time. Had a long wait to order at the counter, only to get up to order and find that food would be another 25 minutes. Most of the staff were working hard, between creating drinks, serving tables (claimed quickly by people who hadn't even ordered yet), and filling to-go orders. One goth girl didn't really look like she was there to work. Coffee was good. Took my avocado toast to go...good flavors, but eaten in my car due to a place that is stretched thin. This seems to be the hip spot in Petoskey for young 20-somethings to come and hang out. Even before entering Roast & Toast screams personality with it's cup and saucer mosaic lining the store front. The menu is found on the left wall after you enter and it boasts a fair amount of options somewhat standard for a coffee/sandwich shop. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it consisted of a decent sized portion, at times falling out of the wheat bread. The chicken tasted fresh and the bread was nice and soft but overall the sandwich was somewhat dry. Still it wasn't the worst chicken salad sandwich I've ever had. The generous serving made up for the dryness. My fiance ordered a cinnamon roll and it was fairly large. It didn't taste nearly as fresh as my sandwich but it was still good. It was a standard cinnamon roll with nothing fancy. To drink I think I had something called a "Chai cow." It was a chilled Chai Tea Latte I believe. Unfortunately I don't remember the name but I do recommend it. The fiance had a peach smoothie that was delicious. Both drinks were hand made, fresh to order. I went there in the hopes of getting some breakfast food at noon. The name of the place has "Toast" in it, unfortunately, they stop serving breakfast at 11. This would be ok if I had not found out that Twisted Olive across the street serves great breakfast after 11 with a great view. Also, the gentleman preparing our order took 20 minutes to inform us that they don't have the type of bagel I wanted. The kitchen seemed pretty chaotic and spent a lot of time fixing peoples orders. I am a big fan of Roast & Toast, feelings that go beyond three insta-observations: - I love their font - I appreciate any establishment that shares an affection for rhyme - I applaud their colourful quirky vibe (neon! tin! Weezer on the loud speaker!) The coffee is roasted in-house, and the people behind the bar seem truly proud of the product they're serving. The coffee drinks are great quality, but what really stands out is the variety of drink options using coffee as the base. An iced chai drink is made special with a spicy mix of cinnamon and peach syrup. A banana is blended with coffee, chocolate and caramel syrup for another iced treat. Fruit smoothies, italian sodas, fresh juices...a perfect place for any and everyone in the Petoskey area to keep hydrated this summer. We were here last Labor Day weekend and returned today for Memorial weekend. They are probably the only breakfast place open at 7am in the area. The vibe is great-- very hipster. They care about the environment: locally and responsibly sourced ingredients, composting food waste etc. Unfortunately the food is just barely acceptable. Get a menu. Ordering from the wall is extremely frustrating. Atmosphere is shabby or...artistic if you are a hippy. But like I always say "hippies know food". The bread makes all things fantastic. You get the crusted loaf ends with your soup which is a great idea. Creamy Mushroom was possibly the best ever for me. Real mushroom soup should not be just one stop thinner than mashed potatoes in my opinion. They get it. Go here and enjoy. read more

Wanted to love this place but have to just say that I liked it. The atmosphere is great - cozy, fun, comfortable, and welcoming. Slight line when coming in but moved relatively fast. The coffee was good - not amazing for what I tried, but served the purpose. If you get coffee in to-go glass there are not refills, but you can get coffee cup and get refills. For the food, we had two different breakfast choices - a bowl and a wrap. Veggie breakfast wrap was good and nicely done. The bowl was missing the potatoes (and when got them were overly done on one side), and there was a mound of overdone hardened cheese mixed in (would've been nice to just have some melted cheese instead). So would I go again and give another try - yes. I just hope for a little more success on food side. Worth a try. read more

This weekend I visited R&T for the second time. It is the perfect place to stop in for lunch if you are strolling around Petoskey, doing some shopping, enjoying the weather etc. A big plus for me are the soups. I've stated in other posts that I love soup and I get it whenever I can, no matter the season. Roast and Toast shuffles in four different soup offerings each day. They range from the classics to more unique kinds. I'm told the soup bar used to be "all you can eat" but they had to put a limit on it. Depending on the soup there are add-ons which you can help yourself too. This time I went with the Broccoli Cheese and added shredded cheese and crutons on the top. The sandwiches and bread always taste fresh. This time I added a strawberry smoothie which was perfect on a hot summer day. If you find yourself in Petoskey looking for a quick lunch stop, walk no further down Lake Street passed Roast and Toast. read more

Took a day trip to petoskey with my wife and 1 year old and wanted a quick place for an early lunch before heading out of town. As soon as we walked in we noticed the place was packed and figured it would be slow service but the line to order moved very fast. Everyone behind the counter was very nice and did their jobs quickly and efficiently to keep the line moving. The food was absolutely top notch and we were very impressed with it all, including the cold brew coffee and frozen vanilla late. They have a cool outdoor seating area out the back door which was clean and a nice change from sitting indoors. We will be back to this place every time we come to petoskey. I'm not the coffee guru, and I've been liking ice coffee lately, so I walked into this eclectic diner/barista and asked for a "almost no calorie something", the lady suggested a latte with a sugar free syrup, I picked Carmel and asked her to work her manic! The menu and atmosphere suggest a rewarding and eclectic breakfast experience. Perhaps it's the overworked, short-staffed team dealing with an unusual Wednesday morning rush of tourists, but the food was just not good. I'll give them a break on service, knowing many businesses are having an issue finding employees, and will focus on the food. I ordered a basic breakfast plate, scrambled eggs, toast, potatoes and sausage. I got one very small (not even one egg's worth) scoop of cold (not warm) eggs, cold potatoes, a warm sausage patty *best part of the meal* and passable sourdough toast. My wife had the French toast (it must have hardly touched the cooking surface) that was not hot and not crisped in any way (tasted like sourdough bread with some cinnamon sprinkled on it). Her side of bacon was good and crispy. I ordered an Americano coffee - tasted as thin and flavorless as any gas station cup of coffee. Normally I'd talk to the person in charge and let them know so that they could correct things for the next diners. The one that appeared in charge was working like crazy in the small kitchen, trying to keep up. I would not have gotten his attention, nor would he have been in the right frame of mind for the discussion. I might be tempted to try this place again if ever in the area, but I'd be very direct on ordering of my expectations. Since this is the type of place where you order and pay before they then bring food to your table, I had already tipped (and I am being extra generous to help servers get back on their feet). In normal times, I might have approached the cashier and asked for my tip back. read more

Cute little coffee bar with small sandwiches etc. Long lines, but good coffee. Had a raspberry chocolate one, and we also had a vanilla latte...both were good! Expect long lines in the summer. Stopped in after a morning run by the marina and was not disappointed. I'd read some Yelp reviews, so I had pretty lofty expectations of this place. Cute little cafe right in the heart of downtown. Walk in, check out their drink specials, and order a light breakfast. Even got a window seat to look outside. I had their special of the day called the chocolate river--basically chocolate milk and coffee with some other bits of magic in it. I had it iced since it's a warm summer morning. I also had the ham and egg English muffin sandwich. Not as basic as it sounds. The eggs had really good seasoning and overall I was impressed that such a simple food was so good.
