Roast and Toast has always been one of my favorite up north spots since I can remember coming up north but today, if I could give them 6 stars I would. We had been checking the daily soups for our favorite soup, Chicken Corn Chowder and I messaged them on Saturday morning asking for the day's soups. I shared my disappointment when my favorite wasn't on the docket and they offered to make it during the upcoming week, which is awesome but then it got better. After I shared that we wouldn't be able to make it during the week they made changes and our favorite soup was available a few hours later. It was DELICIOUS as usual and so for their service today 6 STARS!! The food was great for the price, but the menu is extremely misleading. I ordered an egg wrap (spicy veggie) that seemed to be completely vegetarian but upon receiving my meal I found two large strips of bacon. I wanted to ask for a remake but due to the amount of people huddling around the counter I was unable to speak to a cashier or cook. I also noticed a cook with dreads hair as he was moving through the line. Each time he turned his hair would run right along the cutting boards on the line. I still found the service to be quick paced and professional, I just wish that what came with my food was actually listed on the menu. OK, decison overload when you come here ... I have never seen so many choices for a coffee drink before, and I wish I had time to try every one of them. The atmosphere is fun, coffee was good - not great (for me - my aunt said it was the best iced latte she had ever had ...). The baked goods are awesome, creative and fun. I'm from out of town and love hole in the wall places vs chain restaurants. Took my parents here and place was crowded but food was prepared fairly quick. However they did forget one of our meals. For all of the coffees they do have my parents were disappointed no "regular" coffee. Overpriced for the small portions. read more

Needed to grab dinner for two hungry adults and two hungry kiddos, all while dressed like dirty camping bums & this was the right place! Low key, unlike most of the upscale places in Petosky. The food was amazing and I wanted to order everything off their menu! I got the Lake Salad and a cup of black bean soup. My kids got strawberry lemonade smoothie and grilled cheese. First time here, visiting from Madison,WI. We are really impressed. The 10 person line was reduced in just a few minutes. After ordering our coffee was ready immediately, but the food took about 10 min to come out. We did a BYO breakfast wrap that came out hot and tasted awesome! Great sandwiches on thick, fresh baked bread, served with fruit. They also have Northwoods Soda Pop, which is made in northern MI. My wife found it to taste fresher than typical pop. Reasonable prices in downtown too. read more

SUPER Hipster. Place doesn't look the cleanest. Long line and the perceived hygiene of the workers made me question my choice.

A true northern michigan has-been. Was once a great place to get a cuppa-joe and a dose of culture in little northern michigan, is now a tourist-catering, half-assed coffee shop. Several times have I gotten coffee that is either burnt or not nearly strong enough. They claim to have locally sourced ingredients, when in fact they sysco truck is out back every week. Their poorly treated employees are almost as bad as the microwaved eggs. As Roast and Toast keeps its business solemnly because it is truly the only place up north to feel any sense of individuality, Ben Walker is filtering out any sort of self-expression. Won't be long before they paint the walls white. I miss what was once my favorite coffee shop. read more

I believe a reliable review requires several visits for a fearlessly honest appraisal. That said, Roast and Toast is a disappointment. I say this because I like their product, i.e., locally roasted coffee beans and their food. I cannot jive with the service, however, and feel it lacks in promptness, courtesy, and appreciation. Each time I visited, I feel as though my presence interrupted whatever else went on behind the counter. Today was no exception. When I approached the counter, the server kept his back to me for several minutes, whilst preparing froth, before acknowledging my presence, which feels like a lifetime while waiting. After which, he stumbled his way through the transaction while trying to multi-task, poorly. I feel bad for the people waiting on their drinks. I've been in food and beverage service and understand the loss of focus and engagement during business lulls, but this is a pattern. I hope Roast -n- Toast doesn't take it's customers for granted; there are other roasters. read more

Great coffee and food! My favorite sandwich is the turkey avocado club - delicious. The coffee is excellent, but it can be difficult to hear your name being called when it is busy. There is also not much room to move - or wait for your coffee - on a busy day. It is always worth the wait, though...love the atmosphere, service, location, food, and drinks! read more

Swung through on our way to Walloon Lake cabin. Had the Almond Mocha Joy Latte which was quite tasty. My Scone left a lot to be desired though. My dad had a cinnamon roll that also wasn't anything to write home about but enjoyed his Dirty Irish coffee. Fantastic place for breakfast! We had bagel, egg,spinach,Swiss sandwich, and some really great oatmeal!

One word: Gross! The restaurant smells like rotting garbage and I was served spoiled steamed milk. This really stinks because the coffee house is right across from the condo we rented. I walked in at 7am on a Monday and was promptly ignored by four women behind the counter. The two nearest the register were super busy eating pastries, another female employee was loudly explaining a recent sexual encounter, and the manager was having a meltdown over inventory issues. I would have been more appalled by the scene if I had not been distracted by a strong foul odor radiating from the store. If I had to guess, the smell was hot garbage. When one woman finally decided to take my order, vanilla latte and hot tea, she made it clear I wasn't allowed to ask any questions. 20 minutes later I emerged from the empty restaurant with drinks. When I got home I discovered that the latte was made with spoiled milk. They can keep my $6 as I refuse to ever walk in there again. read more
