Roberto's has been consistently one of the best taco shops for all the years. I've been eating there, close to 40 but the one in Leaucadia is suffering, the last three times I've eaten there. The quality has definitely gone downhill. I ordered rolled tacos last night, and I had to fight to get guacamole on every bite, it was very skimpy, I could smell that the oil needed to be changed in the air fryer, and unfortunately for them, and for me, I'm not going to eat there anymore. The one in Solana Beach is still meeting the old standards, and still producing food of high quality. I will make the effort and drive down there rather than visit the one in Leaucadia. Literally this place stands alone on the north end of Leucadia and is conveniently located within walking distance to Ponto Beach. I was in the mood for a Cali burrito. Cute little place right on the 101 and South of La Costa Ave. Parking is convenient (out front and side lot), a couple tables and counter inside and several outdoor tables on the patio. Very clean and quick. No drive thru, unfortunately. I ordered the Cali burrito (carne asada, cheese, sour cream and french fries) and a breakfast burrito (eggs and cheese). Order totaled $10. Cheap and fast, although I would have preferred guac in my Cali burrito. The breakfast burrito was left to be desired. The service is OK - the cashier didn't even crack a smile. I used to live across from the Leucadia Roberto's and often walked over the railroad tracks for a burrito or taco. I love the look and feel of this Roberto's. The location is close to the beach directly on Coast Highway. You park in front of the restaurant on the asphalt or off to the side in the dirt. It is also an easy stroll from South Carlsbad State Beach. Actually, look and feel seem to distinguish Roberto's from some of its other more generic looking competitor chain taco shops. The Leucadia, Solana Beach, Carmel Valley Roberto's - all are really cute. All the faves are pretty good if standard taco shop fare, but the setting here really makes the meal. I ALWAYS get the #7 Machaca Plate. Popular in Northern Mexico and the American Southwest, Machaca is typically thought of as a breakfast dish with shredded (sometimes dried) beef (or pork) mixed with scrambled eggs, onions and peppers and served with flour (or corn) tortillas. I get it whenever I see it, regardless of the time of day. The Roberto's variant is particularly and consistently good, and the beans and rice on the side make it tough to clean the plate. #Excellent. On a recent visit, my buddy and I chatted with the manager responsible for a bunch of the local Roberto's locations. When I first heard of a big burrito with French fries in it, I have to be honest. I thought it sounded strange. Being a foodie I had to try it though. I did my research and Roberto's California Burrito was very highly rated. It did not disappoint! The carne asada is tender and flavorful. Over priced and not very good. I went with my usual baseline of a carne asada burrito and was unimpressed. The meat was decently flavored but really tough like a grilled rubber shoe sole. The guacamole was the highlight but it and the salsa fresca was unevenly distributed resulting in a warm end and a cold end of the burrito. Their hot sauce was equally disappointing; think mildly spicy reddish water. Great spot. A must Every time you are around or going by. Rolled tacos are the bomb. Burritos are fat, sauces are solid.

I love their burritos! I made substitutions every time I go, and the owner is gracious and open about extra charges. We always go here for late-night Mexican. They also never screw up our order. I've been in some other spots where this happens. (If it weren't an intolerance issue, I'd suck it up and eat the errors!) So I appreciate their attention to detail and friendliness too! My wife's rolled tacos came with nothing but shredded cheese even after I asked for lettuce and tomato to be included. The California Burrito was dry, compact and needed lots of salsa. The fish taco was good and pretty big for a taco. Service was good and we had a discount coupon so this dinner for two only rang the register to the tune of 11.47. Roberto's is like a pair of well worn jeans. Mexican comfort food hits the spot on those days that cooking just does not happen. I always order the Chile Relleno burrito which is a massive tortilla stuffed with deep fried cheezy pepper goodness and rice. They let me substitute veggie beans for the rice, a win win. This indulgence is one of the few calorie laden foods that I eat without regret. Chile Rellenos have a place in my heart, they make me happy. So happy that I don't even mind taking an extra spin class to rip through the calories. Many of the Mexican fast food joints in the hood don't have vegetarian beans, or they won't substitute them for rice. Their loss. I heartily thank Roberto's for catering to my picky needs. Simplicity. Freshness. Quick, hot & tasty. And, yes, they're consistent. Roberto's always has plenty of yummy salsa on hand, green (mild) & red(hot). It's clean, the staff is friendly and attentive. We have been going to the sit down restaurants in the area and would normally pay $4.50 for just the beans. At Roberto's it's $1.50 for an 8 oz. side of beans, just 3 bucks for 8 oz. side of guac. We were so excited about this place we came back the next day! This is where they get 4 stars instead of 5. We had an awesome first experience. The fish tacos were crispy and delicious. Their burritos were awesome. The chips and quac where as good as any sit-down place. But, when we came back the next day, our order was all wrong and the customer service wasn't as good as the day before. The cashier at the front with short hair should really take some time to rest her bxxxx face or get a job where she is not interacting with customers face to face.
