Happy hour heaven! This place rocks! Service was speedy, food was delicious and drinks were unique and amazing. Husband and I were visiting Denver to get out of the Phoenix heat in June and received this recommendation from a bartender at a local dive bar. Spot on! I started with the Beet Down cocktail, a brilliant magenta pink gin and aperol cocktail, using a beet shrub that occurs from making their own beet dishes. It was delicious in a completely unexpected way, the beets complimented the drink perfectly. I could consume many of these! The lamb slider was a large portion which my husband devoured quickly. Mediterranean influence on the menu is on full display with this slider including bacon and tzatziki sauce. He also ordered the Devils on Horseback, a skewered dish of Bacon and Cheese with Peppadew Peppers. Also a very unusual dish and totally delectable. We split a pakora which was a roasted vegetable and sweet potato fritter. Although tasty, not as special. The dip sauce was solid though, a cilantro chutney! It is humorous that our lovely female server was so quick and efficient that we finished happy hour and were done paying the bill in under one hour. She seemed a bit shocked we weren't staying for dinner, but had to catch the patio HH upstairs at Linger while in the area. She shouldn't be too upset, I think they are sister restaurants. And no worries, Root Down is a definite must-do in Denver, I will keep it on my list for future trips! I had the Columbian arepa which was Corn Cakes, Mozzarella, Smoked Gouda, topped with poblano cream & pico. This was gooey cheesy gluten free heaven. These appetizers were all $6 to $8 and a great value. I loved the Roasted Baby Beet Salad with Goat Cheese, Hazelnuts, and Arugula. Again, I could totally eat this every week! I'm not usually into farm-to-table, all natural, kinds of places, but when you're traveling on business, you go where the team wants. I'm so glad that I went as Root Down has me rethinking my aversion to these kinds of restaurants after an absolutely fabulous meal. And everyone in our group agreed. The space is kind of eclectic with a mix of cool, down home, divey, and retro vibes. Staff and service were spot on. Everything we tried was awesome, including the Lamb Sliders, Scallops, Bison NY Strip. I had Gnocchi with mixed greens and added Bison. I was skeptical, but loved it! Super friendly staff and servers in a warm and cozy but elevated space and delicious bites with a twist on traditional! I came here for dinner to catch up with a old friend and it's was perfect! Happy Hour offers plenty of options, we tried the lamb slider, Colombian arepa, beet salad, and pepper blossom, and was not disappointed in any way! So good! The beet down has a lot of beet taste to it, but it's a second favorite per the server. There is outdoor and indoor seating - and there is a unique look to the restaurant that is both inviting and intriguing. We split the Rockfish Tom Kha and the Chicken Two Ways. Wow, this was a great start to a week in Denver. They seemed a little pretentious when we first arrived, and the initial service was slow. Yet, the food turned out to be the best so far this year. Also a shout out - nearly the entire menu can be Gluten Free! Started with the arepas; good start. In some other places, this would have likely have been the highlight of the meal. The two arepas were the size of small pancakes lightly stuffed with mozzarella and smoked gouda. It came with a poblano-pistachio pesto which added crunch and a zesty spiciness and smokiness, and some grape tomatoes that weren't rock hard and boring. The whole dish melded together wonderfully. Next was the miso spring greens salad. This may have been the best salad I've ever had, even though there was a bit too much of the frothy whipped tofu, which was certainly original and interesting. It too had a nice zesty spiciness, and include Mandarin oranges, crunchy jicama, edamame-like beans and some wonderful little crunchy bits that made each forkful a delight. OK, so that's two for two, which is unusual. It was followed by the lamb sliders and the sweet potato tater tots. The tots were just like Oreida tots, but sweet from the sweet potatoes. They weren't bad, but just compared to everything else rather plain, boring, uninteresting, and just too sweet. But the lamb sliders with gluten free biscuits were fantastic. They came topped with a kale carrot slaw in a mint garlic yogurt with harissa aioli, and the buns were like biscuits, but didn't fall apart. There was a lot going on in such a small little meal, but it all worked and was so good. And, they were very substantial for sliders. In the end, it turned out that after an arepa and half the salad, just one slider would have sufficed, but we sacrificed to have two. The wine list was rather small, but both the Spanish field blend red and the Oregon pinot noir were decent. read more

First, the food here is amazing. We had a rough start though walking in on a Thursday evening with a baby. They said it would be 20-30 min wait which was fine. A few minutes later they said it would be an additional 20-30 minutes because they were waiting for one specific table that would accommodate a high chair for us. Everyone else was sat and multiple groups larger than ours were sat before us. Apparently there is only one table in the place that accommodates 3 and a high chair. It was getting late and I didn't even know if my baby would eat at this point. My husband and I like nicer places and quality food which our baby is used to enjoying rather than going to just a "family friendly chain" spot. They finally gave up waiting for the table and opted to seat us in a booth with the high chair on the end and this worked perfectly. She did not obstruct the walkway either. I am not sure why they didnt allow this in the first place. The manager apologized and offered us an appetizer for waiting which was very nice. All of the food was really thoughtfully created and had great flavors. We had the arepa, the Thai curry soup, sweet potato fries, the bison short rib and the rockfish thom kha. Excellent brunch spot! The beet cocktail was so zingy, tangy and refreshing in the morning, I had to get two! The croissant sandwich was so filling and I loved the fluffy square eggs and the romesco sauce slathered throughout. Felt elevated and yet somewhat healthy and super hearty. I ordered a side of sausage but honestly didn't have to the sandwich was filling enough. We were a larger group of 6 and they expertly handled all of our orders with no mistakes and even gave every person an individual bill at the end! Top notch service, much appreciated. My only previous experience with Root Down was at the Denver airport. Much like the airport location, the OG did not disappoint. The brunch menu contains a decadent selection of sweet and savory selections. I split the lamb burger with another in my party and that was very filling with only half. The burger was cooked and seasoned well- it comes medium rare. The house made slaw and over easy egg were great additions. One of the better sides Root Down has is their sweet potato fries-always a winner regardless of location. The curry sauce that goes with the fries is divine. Their brunch menu features bottomless mimosas as well as some hand crafted cocktails. The Jack Rabbit was fantastic- a sweeter take on a Bloody Mary using carrot juice- it's perfection! The menu includes espresso and coffee drinks as well. Almond and oat milk are options as well for your espresso needs. Service was great considering it was packed on a Saturday. The waitress made sure all in our party were taken care of and even offered us a special birthday celebration treat. Root Down has unique photographs that have been turned into murals that adorn the walls. There are fun little details throughout the restaurant. Set in what look like an old service station, this place had to different outside seating options. Very cool place. Sleek designs and decor. Service is as impeccable. Now the food. Simply amazing. The ambiance was solid, though I did keep my coat on because it was so chilly by the window and the giant digital clock at the kitchen counter was distracting. Love this place! We have been multiple times and they never cease to make us feel welcome and stuff us with great food. I had the vegetarian dish of crispy sweet potato fritters in an Indian goodness of roasted veggies. Hubby had the bison steak. The dessert we shared was the strawberry shortcake. While visiting friends in Denver, they wanted to take us to their favorite restaurant. While none of us are vegan, every thing we ordered was amazing!! I'm so glad we had a reservation because it was packed! Luckily, it wasn't too hard to find parking. The staff was really friendly walking us through the menu and giving suggestions of what they recommend and how much to order. Between four of us we split a hefty number of dishes. You know a full-vegan restaurant does it right when you leave and forget you were even eating at a vegan restaurant. My friends and I came for lunch without a reservation and waited about 45 minutes. Before arriving, we had checked out the menu to see what we would possibly get, but when we arrived at the restaurant, we found out that the menu on the website was not updated. I got the burrata toast, which I'll give a 4.5/5 only because it was slightly salty for my taste. One of my friends got the banana bread french toast, and that was like a 3.5/5 personally. The toast was vert soft, but there was some sort of very distinct taste and scent that I didn't enjoy too much. My other friend got the breakfast sandwich? Which came with potatoes and salad. Another year, another birthday in the books at Root Down. My husband and I went on Sunday for the $45 price fix meal - we got the beet salad and devils on horseback appetizers (my absolute favorite salad to get at a restaurant), we got the glazed short rib and Kadhi Pakora for main meals, and the banana cream pie and root down candy bar for dessert. The Pakora was new for me and So delicious - there were so many flavors going on from the tomato chutney and the herb chutney, it had a perfect amount of heat and the fritters had the best crisp!! I got the Hex Sells cocktail and it was quite tasty too, a little warming spices with the nutmeg. I was a little bummed with the service for a birthday; historically they've given out a small dessert and candle but didn't have that this time. Another fantastic experience the other night at Root Down. We make it a point to always dine here once while we're in Colorado. They sat us in the phone booth in the bar area and it was so cute and intimate! We ordered the veggie sliders to start and they made a swap to make the kale slaw in a vinegar (versus yogurt sauce). You get two sliders per order and they come with sweet potato fries. A great starter in my opinion. Then we had the Kadhi Pakora which was described as their most complex dish on the menu right now - lots of flavors and they all worked well together. We also had the bison NY strip which was cooked perfectly medium-rare. The sweet potato purée and charred broccoli really elevated the dish. I'd love to try their brunch sometime. Came for a bachelorette party and had truly the BEST brunch. So well priced for such amazing food. We had a party with some pretty strict dietary requirements and custom orders. Our server Jason handled it SO well and had a great sense of humor about it too. People loved the breakfast burrito and the ability to add different sides. My celiac and dairy allergic friends loved the chicken sausage. My vegan buddy got a vegan breakfast burrito and loved it. I had the chicken and goat cheese biscuit and oh my GAWD so good! I really would have wanted to order everything on the menu if I could, even the salads. My friend got a salad with beets and beet and sunflower seed pesto and that pesto was so delicious. I'm not even a beet person. If you have a big crew for a weekend trip, Root Down is so fun, flexible and beautiful. It's close to a ton of great watering holes like Happy Camper as well. Beautiful building, beautiful decor, and an overall great ambiance. The out door seating in the back is lovely. For the price of the dishes they have I was not impressed unfortunately. The tempura mushrooms were good, not great and small. The vegetarian sliders (2) were okay but not as decent. The risotto was pretty good though, we got the vegetarian version, so they took out the chorizo and added a sweet potato for 8$ but it was pretty tasty. For the tempura mushrooms appetizer Two sliders the risotto and a iced tea the bill came to over $100 Which is crazy for basically two appetizers and entree that were literally JUST decent... You go to root down expecting to spend some money, but I expected to be satisfied and absolutely was not. I won't be back, but it's still a well designed place with good energy to it But for the price, there is so many better places to spend $100 and not leave still hungry and wishing it was, just better, for what you spent. We almost got one of everything on the happy hour menu and just shared it all. My favorite was the veggie slider, it was perfectly cooked and had a lot of flavor. Root down really won my heart with some things and let me down on other issues. I usually like to start with what's good about a place before I start getting into the negative stuff. The Columbian arepas were great! This dish had Griddled Corn Cakes, Mozzarella, Smoked Gouda, Poblano-Pistachio Pesto, Achiote Crema & Pico de Gallo. The textures and flavors all came together in every bite to deliver the perfect dish. 10/10 for this meal. The pepper blossom is the alcohol drink in the picture. It was great, and had a little kick in it which we loved. It was a solid 8.5/10 or 4.5 star item. We would definitely want to order it again. We also had the "devils on horseback", which seems to be a local dish many restaurants in Colorado seem to serve. Their menu said it was Tender Belly Bacon, Smoked Almonds, Gournay Cheese Fondue, Peppadew Peppers & Sherry Gastrique. The dominant flavor is the tender belly bacon, and it's pretty decent. I would say this dish is deserving of 7/10 or 4 star rating. The banana pudding pretty! It was decorated nicely and looked good on the plate. I would say it was tasty but looked much better than it tasted and we've also had better banana pudding in a fair amount of places. I really wanted to love it but I only thought it was decent. We felt it was like a 5/10 or 3.5 star item. The lamb sliders were pretty good. I'll say that it's true, Colorado lamb has a milder, better taste to the meat naturally, so that part was great. We tasted some flavor in the burger for sure it wasn't completely without, and the cheese was a good touch but we had to wait forever to get the food. I'll explain more about this issue at the bottom of this review. 6/10 or 3.5 star for the meal. The diver scallops were sort of a let down. Okay I love scallops, so the part that is the let down isn't so much about the texture or how the scallops was cooked it's more of the flavor. They described it like this on the menu "Crispy Plantain, Black Bean, Chimichurri, Watercress, 'Nduja Gremolata & Lemon Habanero Aioli". Sounds delicious right? Well I got sauces that really tasted kind of bland. I didn't really taste the chimichurri much, and gosh, the habanero, or lack thereof was probably the most disappointing part. If you advertise a spicy pepper like that on a menu, people finicky with spice won't order and those who love spice will order. Well we read that and immediately ordered, only to find out the sauce tasted more like mayo and the spice level was so soft I would say it was more like a bell pepper, we couldn't even feel any spice in it at all. So it was definitely a major let down and we felt like it was false advertising. I gave this a 2.5 star or 4/10 rating. The worst part about our experience was the lack of service here! It was so bad, and it wasn't just to us, it's funny because it was so bad that a couple was leaving and noticed we had food and no utensils and they picked one up off a table and gave it to us and said "trust me you don't want to wait for it to arrive". The burger arrived cold with the cheese hardened and the meat at room temp. We waited soooo long to get that burger back after sending it back. I don't even know where to start, first of all getting someone to glance at our direction was so hard it took a while to even ask for another one, then once we did get someone's attention, it took them a long time to bring food back and once they did it was the wrong item, they apologized and then we waited some more to finally get the burgers. It was. Fiasco. Refills on our drinks? Forget about it haha, we wanted to drink more than we did, we took and Uber there and everything but getting their attention to order it was too difficult. So we couldn't even catch a mild buzz at all. If I ever do come back here I would return on a week day and at non prime hours and only order 2 of my favorite things. BEST GOAT CHEESE BISCUITS We recently had brunch at Root Down, a restaurant in the LoHi (Lower Highlands) area of Denver. The décor is upscale industrial casual with funky art and an outdoor garden. The farm to table menu will appeal to a range of diners from the vegan gluten sensitive to the steak lover carnivore. But the menu is limited (there is only one omelet on the menu) so best to preview the menu to avoid disappointment. We ordered Lemon Poppyseed Pancakes ($9 for only 1 pancake or $17/3 pancakes) with a side of Black Pepper Bacon ($6) and Fried Chicken and Goat Cheese Biscuit ($22). Friends ordered the Mushroom and Herb Omelet ($18) and the Red Pepper Grit Cake Benedict ($19). The medium size pancake was deliciously hearty yet also light and fluffy - if you are hungry, order the full plate of three pancakes. The chicken and biscuit dish was good with chunks of deep-fried dark chicken in a not too spicy sauce and a sunny side up egg. Order extra goat cheese biscuits (medium size) for the table because they are that good! Skip the three thin slices of hard (not crispy) heat-lamp warm bacon.
