This wine bar has been on my list for a while, finally got to try it! It's located in an area of town where there's not other bars or restaurants, so a bit hidden. There's street parking in the front and surrounding neighborhoods. Loved both the indoor and outdoor seating, the concept is unique too! It's like beer on tap, but for wine. There's an array of wines to choose from on the right side, insert a wine card into the slot and pick the type of wine and size you want. I really enjoyed the concept of this space. I visited during happy hour and while the menu felt limited, I highly recommend the Patatas Bravas. Additionally, the baby greens salad is great to add on the side if you're going to share (wouldn't recommend it as your only dish). The wine is self-serve on tap and I love that you can sample as many options as you like because you pay by the ounce. Kinda feels like an arcade because you're given a card to use to activate the pour and track what you purchase. The staff was very professional and helpful. Someone was usually around at the wine taps to help, offer suggestions, and answer any questions. The ambience was pleasant with a variety of seating inside and outdoors- we even witnessed a proposal! Stopped by roots on a Tuesday (yes, they're now open on Tuesday) and to my surprise it was all day happy hour for the wine. The happy hour for food lasted until 7 though, which was great. The food was delicious and served quickly. We loved the self-service wine system and getting to try different glasses. The staff explained the system and done there we were able to choose our different pour sizes. They have a wide variety of wines t various price points. We sat on the patio since it was nice out and overall had a great time. The parking is street only, so when they're busy you may have to park further but it's a worth it stop! read more

You'll receive a personalized card at the counter that grants you access to a variety of hand-picked regional wines that can be dispensed in 1oz, 3oz, or 5oz pours. Prices and tasting notes are listed for convenience. Roots lets you choose your own adventure in an interactive format, whether you fall into the picky, indecisive, or adventurous category. The space has a cozy but refined aesthetic, a color palate featuring mostly grays and browns, and large branches (inverted roots?) snaking across the ceiling like stag horns or wooden arteries. I was impressed by the culinary ambition of the menu at first glance. I ordered the gourmet Burger, but it wasn't available on that particular evening, so I instead chose the Butter Noodles, which sounds like it was created in a laboratory by a mad scientist hell-bent on creating the most umami dish in existence: dashi + squid ink + pecorino romano + mushroom + bonito. Unfortunately, it sounded better than it tasted. While the squid ink was pleasant, the Italian cheese was overpowering and the pickled mushrooms were jarring, though I assume the acidity was meant to stand up to the richness of the dish. The shaved bonito was also caked over top rather than dry and wiggly. A dish that definitely has potential but is a little unbalanced in its current form. Nonetheless, Roots is a great place for both locals and visitors to check out. I'll definitely stop by soon to see what else the menu has to offer and to sample more of their wine selection. read more

It's a great covid-19 friendly spot! It's a wine bar but what's so great about it is that it's a self-serve winery with very light lunch options. There's also a wide range of selections to choose from! I would suggest eating before going. I went here for my 21st birthday and I had a great time. I really *want* to love this wine bar. I've been to self-service wine bars before that I loved, but Roots has a few small issues to work out in their opening phases. First, I'll share what I did love about Roots: (1) The self-service + choose-your-pour-size concept makes trying new wines very accessible. The little paper cards about each wine were fun to take back to the table to discuss. There were several unique bottles and wines to start conversation, such as a bottle by Chateau Montelena (the first CA winery to put US wines on the map). (2) The ambiance is very boho-chic and charming. The outdoor patio is adorable, and it's a cute space. (3) The food we tried was very tasty. The Brussels sprouts and beet salad were both well-prepared and with fresh ingredients. Now, for the parts that I did not enjoy as much... (a) There are only 7 self-service machines, which means that only 7 people at-a-time can be tasting or serving themselves wine. Even though there are ~5 bottles per machine, there is only 1 card slot per machine, so only 1 person can use a single machine at once. When someone is standing in front of a machine, it's hard to read about the bottles, so there was quite a crowd around the machines. (b) The layout of the machines is very clustered... all 7 machines are right next to each other, which added to the crowded feel. I think Roots could benefit (if not by adding a few more machines) by at least separating the machines on 2 different walls; maybe by whites/reds? If not a less crowded layout, it would be helpful if the wine lists were posted elsewhere, so guests don't have to physically be at the machine to consider their next glass. (c) The wines were so expensive. My 3rd glass was $21, which I didn't quite realize until I pushed the button already... but it certainly wasn't the most expensive one. Even wines I've seen at local wine shops for $25 were being sold for $75+. I know that all restaurants have 300-400% markup, but I just wish Roots had more wines that I couldn't go buy just down the street for that much cheaper. Paying such a steep markup is more palatable if I'm at least buying a wine that I wouldn't/couldn't buy at the local Spec's or wine shop. My total bill (before tip) was $100 for 3 glasses of wine + 2 appetizers. I was honestly shocked to pay so much for an afternoon "happy hour." (d) The food menu variety was disappointing. There were fewer than 10 items total on the menu, and the smallest items were salads (that came with obnoxiously large silverware). For a wine bar that is promoting wine 'tasting,' I would expect to see some tasting-appropriate snacks on the menu... maybe some cheese, olives, bread/butter, bruschetta, dips, empanadas... Honestly, any light finger foods would have been nice. We did enjoy the brussel sprouts and beet salad, but they were just a bit difficult to share, and the petite patio tables did not really fit the plates/silverware. It would have been nice if the menu matched the table set-up. Overall, I will surely return to Roots again to see how the restaurant changes as it's been open longer. I just hope to see some improvements to make the experience less awkward for guests. read more

Has become one of my favorite spots since I found out about it! The staff is friendly as soon as you walk into the door, they were very helpful explaining their process of how the wine cards work. It's open seating and really good to place to wind down with friends and have a very relaxed night. The wine selection is exceptional and I'm almost finding something new to drink. It's great for anyone, either if you just want to do wine-tastings or doing full-pours. If you like something you have drank there, you can always purchase of bottle of it there. Parking is really good, you'd find plenty of street parking - even on a busy weekend. I had celebrated my graduation at roots, and the staff treated me and my friends really well! If you wanted to find a Wine utopia in Houston, Roots is it. This place is chic where many varieties of wine are on tap. The offerings are vast and you can switch at any time. The wine bar has a rustic chic feel to it. Plenty of space indoors and a nice front and side patio. Happy Hour food options are a little slim. I ordered the Patatas Bravas from the Happy Hour menu, and the Juicy Lucy Burger from the main menu. The Patatas Bravas was a unique dish with potatoes in fondu. Visually the elements in the dish look unaligned, but as I started eating, I couldn't stop indulging. Ohhhhh myyyy Juicy Lucy!! The burger was everything I didn't expect. Juicy Lucy is the perfect name for this work of culinary art. The best part is the cheddar oozing out of the burger. I didn't need any condiments. All around a great experience. I love this concept. The have an entire wall of wines that range from white, rosé to red and you're able to select how much you'd like from a taster, small pour or larger pour. When we arrived, there were maybe 4 other parties seated, so there were many spots to take a seat at. The beverage dispensing process was explained to us and we set sail. We got to try several things and the stars were the Brussels sprouts, my husband who has never liked a vegetable - ever - ate them up! A miracle! This was a pretty cute spot. I loved browsing the wine options and they have a lot of information on each wine. It was fun sampling different ones. They offer 1oz, 3oz and 6oz pours which makes it easy to just try a few options for the fun of it. I feel like this experience would be a cute date activity. Servers were kind but being that the whole concept is self - service, there wasn't a whole lot of help from the servers. You go to the hostess counter to order food and they leave a pitcher of water at your table.
