My wife and I shared a Carbonara and wanted to lick the plate clean, then onto the Tre Colori salad which had a ever so slight touch of cream of a cooked yoke and mayo, PHEW was that good. Our entrees shrimp oreganata and striped bass with a drizzle of lemon butter sauce. So pleased we just room for expresso. We'll be heading back on Sunday's, easy parking! Refined but unpretentious old school nyc Italian white-table-cloth cooking. I went for the lunch special and ordered the soup of the day and the Pollo alla Francese. The bread arrived first, fresh and gently toasted. The soup was a potato leek and it was exactly that, on the light side in terms of the potato purée but with what tasted to me like a solid, honest stock for its base. The chicken in wine sauce with butter and lemon also had what seemed like a simple but well made sauce with fresh ingredients. The chicken was tender, not over cooked, nicely pounded and lightly breaded. It came with a few vegetable sides and a tasty little rectangle of what tasted like sautéed polenta. I asked for a fruit tart with ice cream and an espresso and was charged extra for those but it was worth it. The apple tart had thinly sliced apples layered on it that still had some juice to them and still tasted fresh. The tart base had a light taste of almond paste, not too much and the whole slice had a nice, light glaze to it. The espresso pull was bracing, nutty and not too bitter, perfect. read more

Had a lunch meeting here today with a banker I get together with often. I live so close to this spot I was surprised it had taken me so long to come by. First, I was shocked at how big the restaurant is - definitely a very large establishment. When I got there the restaurant was fairly empty but it filled up by the time we left. My friend and I have been trying out new restaurants in the city, so this was next on our list! It's a very romantic place, so it's a great spot for a date. We started off with the baked clams and the burrata to share. Both were delicious, and they even split up the baked clams onto 2 plates for us so it'd be easier to eat. As a main entree, I got the eggplant parm, which is one of my favorite italian dishes. They did a great job making this, and I even had some leftover for lunch the next day. We also split the chocolate mousse for dessert. I'm not a huge chocolate mousse fan, but this one was actually so good because it wasn't too heavy. And of course we had to get some drinks, so I got a margarita and then a french martini. Both were very refreshing, but the martini was amazing. A little on the strong side, but it tasted so good. Aside from the food, the service was great, and our waiter was happy to give us recommendations of what to get. read more

As a New York visitor, this felt like the real deal. I could totally see Tony Soprano meeting with Johnny Sack here. They would have loved the pasta dishes -- we had carbonara and fettuccine. I was a little skeptical going to this restaurant because the prices are higher than I am used to paying for Italian food. But it was the only Italian place within walking distance that had good reviews and reservations available so we decided to try it. The restaurant has been around for awhile and it shows in the decor. The place is a bit dark and when I saw one of the wall lamps askew I was a bit concerned about what we were getting. The service is attentive and polite. At first I had some difficulty understanding the NY Italian accent but they were patient in communicating with me. As the meal continued their friendliness was quite apparent. I appreciated how even though the waiter took our order without writing it down they still served the dishes to the people who ordered them. They kept checking in and even brushed off the crumbs before dessert. The food itself was quite good. The pasta was obviously made in house and the sauces were delicious. This restaurant was pretty mediocre. My chicken parm was $36, and it was salty and not particularly good. For that price, I'd expect a delicious meal. The restaurant had a "show" which was two opera singers walking around the restaurant and singing intermittently--the singing/piano kept stopping and starting. The ambiance was also spotted with random valentines decorations (which, not to be rude, looked very cheap). An accidental find that I am overjoyed to have discovered. We first found this venue when my mother and I were aimlessly looking for an Italian venue to get dinner before catching our train at Grand Central. The experience was phenomenal. Fast forward a few years and we scoured Midtown looking for this restaurant, finally successful in our search. The food was delicious and the servers were very accommodating. I ordered a 2nd glass of campagne, which they forget, but upon realizing their mistake our server offered my mother, her boyfriend, and me three complimentary glasses to make up for it. I had to discuss some matters with my coach for work so we decided to grab lunch. I am not familiar with the area around my office so I asked around to see where was a good place to eat. Someone that sat by me recommended this place so I decided to go. When we arrived, we didn't realize that it was a fancy place where they took our coats and such. They had a prefix menu where you get an appetizer, entree, and dessert for $39.00. You really cannot beat the price for a fancy italian place in Manhattan. One thing, if you are not a fan of the stuff on this menu, there are NO substitutions allowed. However, the normal stuff is reasonably priced as well. Appetizer: mussel with white wine broth: we all know from my PMF review that I am very bias with this type of dish. The broth could have used more mussel-ness, but overall the mussel was cooked very well and it came with a crusty cheesy bread. I like my bread to have a soft middle and crusty crust, but it was okay. So far, nothing really measures up like XIX. Entree: pasta of the day: linguine with warm creamy pesto: super delicious. Usually I like my pesto with fettuccine, BUT this was a wonderful exception. The thin noodles grabbed the sauce. Wow! I am a fan. Dessert: cannoli: above average cannoli. Very crispy shell and very creamy filling with a unique oomf. The staff was super fine, my water cup was never partially filled and a dirty plate did not linger on our table for a long period of time. The ambiance is great and very old school. I would like to try some things on their normal menu one day, but for now, I like this place. read more

Tried the scungilli ( not sure about the spelling ) but it's basically conch sliced thinly and served in spicy tomato sauce . Awesome appetizer but it wasn't on the menu - had to ask for it. The veal Rossini was amazing - tender and flavorful and my favorite. We also had the veal chop which was nice and tender but not as flavorful as the other dishes we had that meal. I've been on a real handmade pasta kick lately that has spanned both Los Angeles and New York; and while there have been some clear cut winners and loser, a visit to Rossini's left me a bit unimpressed. Given the atmosphere and the price point, I simply expected better. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Rossini's is a sprawling landscape of traditional New York Italian decor, and they back that atmosphere up with good service. Our party of six was well taken care of late on a weekday night. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Rossini's isn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be, but that's not to say it's a bargain. My specialty pork pasta of the evening ran me $28.00 for a medium portion, which was just about right given the atmosphere of Rossini's. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? To my surprise, this pasta dish simply wasn't that good. Just by looking at the picture I took you can probably tell that it was plain, but even after I added some black pepper to the mix I couldn't get over the fact that this was simply some very basic pasta and pieces of pork. It was a sum of its parts, which was disappointing. No Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? There's so much good pasta in town that it's hard to say I would. No Star. read more

I had dinner at Rossini's last night with the same group of friends that had a terrible experience at Emilio's Ballato (Ballato) in July our $1,000 was much better spent at Rossini's we felt welcome and appreciated, not like we were doing the restaurant a favor. The service from the front bar to the waiter was like night and day vs Ballato. And we did not need to wait on line like cattle for over an hour. food and dessert were excellent. We passed a group of men chatting at the bar (I would go so far as to say we were "ushered past" the men) and coats were taken before being seated. Hidden in one of the quiet streets but inside the restaurant, it's usually pretty busy. It has that classic vibe to it and old italian decor with nice chairs and tables. It's a pretty fancy restaurant actually but also has cozy feeling. All their food is above average with excellent service. All their appetizers are good. I think most people will like their tomato sauce pasta but to me it's a bit sour but it's not that strong so it doesn't bother me. I'm not a huge fan of their tomato sauce so I get the ravioli with vodka sauce which is fantastic. Desserts are pretty good too. They have round and large tables so it's good for groups. read more

The prior yelp reviews weren't kidding when they said the clientele were geared towards older folks. As I walked in, BAM older person, BAM another one, a whole sea filled. When I say older, I mean late 50s/60s (notice I didn't say old, just older :) ). Dinner started a little rocky; we asked our waiter for the wine menu twice and didn't get it until 15 mins later. The restaurant is an old classic feel. Waiters with red jackets and all spiffy. We all opted for the restaurant week menu. Appetizer: clams with breadcrumbs (where's the clams? All I tasted was the bread crumb). One of my gf had the sausage with spinach, and it was yummy. Entree: chicken with a buttered sauce with potatoes and spinach (chicken was tastey but the spinach was a little too salty for me). Overall, I enjoyed my dish. Would I ever come back? Only if I wanna nab some "polar bears" (im jk). But the food is decent Italian cuisine, but nothing extravagant that makes me wanna come back. read more
