I scheduled a tech to arrive at home on 3/19/26 between 11-12 and was informed via text that tech was running late and they would need more time for him to arrive, which I canceled appt since I had other things to do. I scheduled two consecutive appointments with Roto-Rooter for a dishwasher leak that had already damaged my neighbor's ceiling. Both days I left work early to be available during the 4-6 PM window. Both days they never showed and never called. When I followed up each time, I was given no real explanation and offered another reschedule. No accountability. No waived service fee. Nothing. Two days of lost wages. A plumbing issue still unresolved. Complete disregard for the customer's time. Do not use Roto-Rooter if you actually need the job done. Worse I have ever dealt with. The story is long, and I never saw a plumber. They sent out two technicians who rapidly upsold us on stuff we did not need. The story is even worse. They said the best fix was to tear out the ceiling in the breakfast room and replace a T-pipe connection with a Y-pipe connection. Then they said they could not cut the hole because our house was built during the lead-paint use period, 1967. So we had the ceiling section removed by a building contractor. Then they were slow in coming out. So we called our usual plumber, Rotto Roter, because our plumber could not come on the weekend. I had appointment for 2/17/26 from 8am-10am. I called at 9:37 am. I was told the plumbers were running a hour later. And to call back at 1040am if I didn't hear anything. I called back at 1103am. Was told the dispatcher would call me back in two minutes. Never received any call back. No one never showed up the whole day. I wished I read these negative reviews before I contacted this company. I requested service on a faulty residential water heater. Although Roto-Rooter did not arrive at the scheduled time and had to reschedule for the next day, the technician who appeared was courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. They may be a little more expensive (what you expect from a nationwide business), but the technician did all he could to resolve the issue without charging for additional parts. I honestly wished I read the Yelp reviews before I reached out to Roto-Rooter. Silly me for thinking a big business would actually have good process and people. As others have said, they subcontract out their work. Someone named David in an unmarked white van arrived. We had an odor coming from our sump pump. He promptly told me that our sump pump needed to be replaced. I almost fell for it too because he was initially convincing about how old our sump pump is and needing a backup pump and battery. And I had agreed to that work. What really got me suspicious was when he then told me that I had to replace the ejector pump too because the warranty is only 3 years old. I kept pressing him on warranty vs actual lifespan and he kept saying warranty is warranty and it needed to be replaced. Then started to give me a "if you buy two, you get 20% off the second today but if you decide tomorrow, the deal goes away. I don't make this up, Roto-Rooter does." He left to go get parts. He had said he doesn't make up the pricing And I promptly called Roto-Rooter to ask about the pricing. The receptionist said that the technician comes up with the price and Roto-Rooter has no insight. I told her to cancel the work order because this was so sketchy. She then said she had to call the dispatcher. The dispatcher called me, assured me I wouldn't have to pay anything and that I could cancel. When David returned for his tools, he wanted to charge me $411 for having done absolutely nothing but claimed it was for 1 hr of analyzing the problem. He said because I agreed to the work then changed my mind. I was happy to pay for his time but asserted that I was told I didn't have to pay. So I ended up paying $200. I had a small business plumber come out and they were able to quote me at $750 for replacing the sump pump when Roto-Rooter was going to charge me $1300. read more

I was desperate for a plumber on a Sunday and called Roto-Rooter for the first time. I think the quality of the work was great, but the pricing was exceptionally high, even for a Sunday. They quoted a fixed fee for the job, but then increased it $400 because they said it was harder mid-way through the job, and by that time there was nothing I could do but accept it. The reason they cited for the upcharge was forseeable when it gave the original quote. The total cost was $2700 for a water heater and installation. They don't split it into time and materials, but I know the water heater cost $700 since I was there when it was purchased at Lowe's, which leaves $2000 for labor for a 5 hour job. That feels like a lot, even for a Sunday. So overall, I'd definitely call them again if I was desperate and needed a job done when my regular plumber is not working. However, they will not be replacing my regular plumber. read more

I have my main drain rodded out yearly, Roto Rooter came out on 10/8/25, rodded the drain and then asked for an additional person to come out with a camera. This other guy claimed I needed to have a liner put in the drain (at a cost of $7,200.00) or if I let it go could cost as much as $20,000.00 and claimed I only had a 2" opening to the house. I brought in a real plumber who told me the drain had way too many roots in the drain, he rodded again and said that he can now see the entire opening and it did not need a liner. I wasted 625.00 on an incomplete con job From Roto Rooter in addition to the cost of another plumber. Called them for a simple sink clog/stopage. The tech cleared it in about 30 minutes, nothing complicated. Then came the shock: a $720 "service fee" that was never mentioned on the website, never shown in the confirmation email, and never clearly told to us before starting. On top of that, they pushed an extra "DCP" charge of $93, plus tax, bringing the total to $822 for a half-hour job. This doesn't appear to be the fault of the technician they sent--he did his job. The problem is with the company itself. Management confirmed this is their "standard flat price." That means the deception is baked into their business model. They justify it with talk about "equipment, training, and guarantee," but that doesn't excuse hiding core fees and upselling extras after the fact. Just call a damn plumber. Came out two weeks ago to fix severe clog in kitchen sink. Rodded twice under the sink, then tried to convince me it was fixed (water was still pooling and bubbling as it was trying to drain) and I needed to pour hot water, vinegar and like half a bottle of Dawn dish soap down the drain to "finish it off." I followed these EXACT instructions and the seal of the PVC connected to the sink actually burst and disconnected from the sink. $720 charge with $200 coupon, got charged $520. To not fix it. It was still clogged when he left! Not draining properly. I have called another company. I'm not going to go through this again. I'm iffy about what kind of review I should write. I do feel there was some over estimating of labor. We had clear blockage in our sewer line. I tried to do my own investigation and work but could snake anything out and was able to get about 20' in the line. I Called Roto rooter on Thursday. They came out when I asked. They had to pull the toilet in order to snake. The drain tech spent an hour or so but couldn't get past where the sewer line dropped a few feet to go under the foundation. The tech called a supervisor who brought in a camera. I watched the camera. Clearly it was sludgy and clogged. More work was clearly required at this point. That was all fine. The tech and supervisor were great. This was a $750 service. Note this DID NOT clear the line. Although the paper work says that the line is cleared and warranties for 6 months. That didn't make any sense and should have caught it sooner. If the line is cleared then why is further work necessary? I should just kept calling him back every day since it was covered in the warranty? The first quote for excavating up to a 10ft section near my foundation and under a concrete slab, to jet the entire line, and to install clean out was initially $11,500. I definitely hesitated with that quote. I definitely pushed back asking what part of the labor I could get done, such as tearing out concrete, etc. the field supervisor made a call and came back with $9,500. I then tried to get the initial $750 snake work removed since it didn't do anything. But I was told that would most likely not happen. I should've pushed harder especially after seeing the paperwork saying it was cleared. Ha - that's a blatant lie. So all in $10,250. I was initially okay with this and signed all the papers for the work to commence. I did ask for a break down of the pricing. But only received a generic description of the work. Now that the work is done I do wonder about the pricing. Three guys worked on this line. Two guys worked on the excavating and new pipe install 4' of sewer line and 6' of clean out line. I clocked about 9 hours of on-site labor. The guy who hydro jetted the line was probably on site about 2 hours. I guess that's for you to judge. They did partial work on Friday 10a-12p and then 4p-6p and finished on Saturday 1045a-345p The costumer service was great. I was popping in on all the work being done. Anytime there was a camera involved I was looking over their shoulder. And they were cool with that. Definitely wanted to see and understand the process. Which made me realize I should've just rented the excavator myself to install a clean out and then just paid for the jetting. All the work comes with a 5 year warranty on parts and labor. read more

We had Roto-Rooter out 6/30 to replace our main sewer line. While excavating they hit our main water line in. They did replace it by running a new line in, but left the old line, uncapped, open on both ends. With flash floods recently this allowed mud water to pour into our basement. Be aware of this company at all costs. The experience with this company has been a nightmare. They essentially disappeared after they got their money and ignored us after getting the money. We followed up with over 10 emails, texts, and phone calls and no support. I highly doubt their google reviews are real. Check the real reviews on other websites as their reviews are 2 stars. They also push you to waive our right to cancel the contract (which is a violation of Illinois state law). Don't fall for their scams. Very scammy company. They also charged $4,500 for just 3 hours of hydrojetting and unblocking work. I consider it overpriced -- but I wouldn't have minded it if the after-service would have been good. Avoid this company. now they are trying to to charge 4500 to rod with a picoter machine which is something they should have done in the first place. they told me it would last 20 yrs but in the contract it says: This is a temporary solution and will not address the underlying problem with the pipe. There is high likelihood that the line will back up again in the future. When that will happen cannot be determined at this time. But they told me it will fix the problem. Steady trying to milk for more money. it's been like three months since they charged 10,000 and they have had to constantly come out and rod because the toilet keeps backing up. It never was fixed. One of there workers even charged 1500 for a 3ft pvc tub drain pipe. He lied and said he worked for 5 hours but he broke a part went to Home Depot twice and went to lunch and sat in his car. Smh. I had to call corporate and fight for my life and they took 1000 off but I still feel like 500 for that was way excessive. This is affecting my health and I can't sleep. I am contacting a lawyer and the attorney generals office. They also lied on paperwork for the homeowners insurance to go thru and charged insurance 15,000 for water mitigation and took all my brand new Flooring and cabinets out sayin they were water damaged (false) I spent 50,000 remodeling Before and the insurance company 27,000 after separate from the 15,000 Had to pay 5,000 deductible. Called for emergency service at 6am and booked for tech to arrive between 8 and 10. I gave my address which included the apartment number. Received a call at 915 that the tech was running late and the dispatcher had no idea when someone would arrive. Received another call at 1130 stating again that the dispatch team had no idea when someone could come out. Next call did not come until 530pm and I was asked if my building was a hi rise and if a COI was required for entry. I had to ask 3 times for the dispatcher to define what a COI was. When I asked I was told to ask my building. When I told the caller that I'd booked someone else since this was an emergency and I was leaving town the company rep with whom I spoke didn't really seem to care at all.
