A very bad experience. Roto Rooter over-charged me by about 40%, as demonstrated by independent insurance experts inspection , they did not provide me with an estimate ex ante, they executed un-requested work without estimate and send me an inflated bill, they pressured me to sign ambiguous paperwork. By now, I am out for .... $ 5,500 for the replacement of 15 inches of a drain pipe. Most of the cost was "ventilation for humidity" (I did not ask for that), mold cleaning (there was no mold). I am certainly disgusted with this company. I called and scheduled an appointment and I was told that a plumber would arrive between 519 and 919. I received several text messages stating that there had been a delay but not to worry and that the plumber would be on his way. After waiting over six hours. I finally received a phone call Which went straight to voicemail. I immediately called the number back and was told that my ticket had been canceled. Of course, I was very upset and I was not given a reason so I asked to speak to a manager. A manager told me that they have been trying to reach me which I let her know was a complete lie. I had the phone right next to me at all times and there were no missed calls on my phone at all. I only received text messages and with each text message. It was assuring me that someone will be on their way. I was not offered any further discounts other than an apology. This is my very first experience, attempting to use Roto-Rooter and trust me. I will never use them again. I was only told that they could reschedule for tomorrow but obviously if someone makes an appointment for an emergency plumber it's needed right away. Poor customer service. They did not even try to win my business. it appears to me that this is how they run their business which is unethically and very unprofessionally. They came to my house to fix a small leaking in my bathroom and charged me $640 to re-tie the bath drain lid. It was a 15min work then they look at my insurance contract and said the insurance would cover the full recovery (heater and drywall). They called them, filled the claim and the insurance declined after 2 days, so I will have to pay $3000 from my pocket for something that any local plumping company would charge me $200. This company doesn't deserve our respect. Stay way from them. read more

Two stars because an initial technician and estimator who came out in 2017 were helpful, and because I had a great experience with two plumbers who recently came to correct a contractor's work. Everyone I've dealt with since then has been a dumpster fire of incompetence and nastiness. I purchased a home and it turns out there are roots growing into my sewer line. The first drain tech who came out and showed me the roots. A team came out to scope the line, work was scheduled but had to be put on hold due to a financial emergency that took precedence. Fast fwd to 2019. Another rep comes to scope the line and gives me an estimate, I get a date for the sewer line replacement. He guarantees that it will be done, start to finish, in 2 days. Sounds great, right? It would have been if he had kept his word. They mixed up my address with another job in the neighborhood and failed to get the utility company out to mark the gas lines. They failed to tell me that they'd be killing the 70 year old tree in my yard when digging. They failed to show up on time. At the end of the first day, when the actual line was supposed to have been replaced, they still had done nothing but push the job out til next week. The rep who sold me on this was SO RUDE and so misogynistic, laughing at me when I expressed my frustration at having to take more time off work to deal with his mess. This attitude was reflected all the way up through management, who basically shrugged and said "ok, so what?" Needless to say, I did not use this company, and suggest you stay FAR away from them. I just called for a gas fitting and the rep at the call center was SO disgustingly rude. This company does not provide good customer service, and there's no shortage of others who do comparable work at the same price. Save yourself the headache and go with one of them instead. read more

Called Roto-Rooter to fix a leaking pipe at our business restroom. The technician arrived, checked the pipe, and began work. We gave approval for the seemingly minor repair, but the technician never gave an estimate prior to working. We assumed that it wouldn't be much since it was minor. The pipe was replaced fairly quickly. After completing the job, the technician began repairing a loose restroom door (which we did not ask him to do, we thought he just did it out of good will). Throughout the visit, the technician stepped outside to take phone calls for a good half an hour. After repair, the technician went to his truck for about an hour to write up the invoice. He took so long, we thought he left! We were stunned when he came back with a bill of $1,100! On the invoice, he even stated that he repaired a restroom door (which we did not ask him to do). I will say the technician was skilled and polite, but we were completely thrown off by the exorbitant price. At least tell us beforehand that the bill will be that high! Although he was at our business for a couple of hours, only a small portion of that time was spent working. Thank you for fixing the issue, but with business practices and price gouging like this, we will not seek Roto-Rooter for repairs again. read more

I don't take time out to write many reviews, good or bad - I usually only find the motivation when a business is so fantastic that they deserve a pat on the back, or so terrible that I feel I have a duty to warn others. I am glad to say that Roto-Rooter (Jessup branch) falls into the first category. Our kitchen sink was backed up on a Tuesday evening; we noticed it around 8pm. I called Roto-Rooter and was surprised that someone was answering the phone. I was even more surprised when a Roto-Rooter plumber arrived within the hour. His name was Sat G. (Technician #5733) and he was extremely professional and very polite. I appreciated that he wore some plastic "booties" over his shoes (like they do on CSI) so that he did not track dirt on our carpets. I explained the problem and Sat went to work on it. He was able to clear the blockage and we were soon back in business with our kitchen sink. Sat took the time to carefully clean the area below the sink where he had been working. The following day, I noticed that the grease that had been dislodged from the pipes when our sink was snake had backed up outside in our area drain, outside our basement. The outside area drain was no longer draining, which was a pretty big problem because, once the water level reaches 5", it can come into our basement. This problem seemed to be connected to the kitchen sink work, so I called Roto-Rooter and asked to speak with a manager. I was put in touch with Ed Clark. After I explained the background, Ed offered to send a technician back to my house to clear the area drain, free of charge. He also took the time to explain how the kitchen and area drain pipes are connected. I was very pleased that Ed and Roto-Rooter agreed to clear my area drain without charging me another fee. I think many plumbers would just say, tough luck buddy. I took a few minutes to scroll through some of the other reviews for Roto-Rooter. It appears that some folks think the company's prices are too high. I can't speak to that, but for what it's worth, you have to take into account the fact that Roto-Rooter stands behind its work. The nice thing about them is that they seem to be available 24/7, and they will come out and inspect a problem for free and provide a price (in other words, there is no flat fee for a "service call"). This is in contrast to outfits like Magnolia Plumbing, which I also have used, which charge a $75 fee just to come out and inspect the situation. After the inspection, they offer to do the work for a flat fee (say $350 to snake a line), and if you don't like the price, you can send them away but you feel like your $75 payment was a sunk cost. I have no affiliation with Roto-Rooter, Magnolia, or any other plumber. I wasn't offered anything, and did not receive anything, for writing a review, and was not asked to write one. They did right by me, and I thought they deserved a pat on the back. Thanks Ed and Sat! read more

I want to thank Matt and Al, and the rest of the team at Roto-Rooter for their above and beyond excellent service over the past week. We woke up to a backed up basement toilet last Sunday, and Roto-Rooter was out at the house within four hours to assess the problem. It turned out to be MUCH more than a clogged toilet...cracked pipe, crazy old DC plumbing issues, etc. The guys worked methodically to figure out each new problem they encountered until FINALLY it was revealed that the problem is on the DC city side, not in my home. Matt, Al, and David stayed at my house until almost 8 pm at night to ensure they spoke directly to the DC Water crew, as they knew the problem could be ignored without their expert commentary. I will shout their praises from the roof deck from the rest of my days because DC Water has finally agreed to dig up the street and replace the emergency line. Without the team staying to speak to DC Water personally, I would probably be dealing with this for the next few weeks instead of (hopefully) the next few days. read more

"We're not landscapers." That was the phrase which was uttered, more than a few times, by the Roto-Rooter representative who came out to perform a video inspection of the main sewer line to my house, as he explained the various options of how to address my old and decaying sewer pipe. That phrase was beyond prescient. Synopsis of the scenario: The basement floor drain backs up. It'll have to be snaked. It's the weekend. I have to call Roto-Rooter, as they are one of the few companies that are 24-7 with no emergency call rates. A plumber comes and snakes out the line (around $500). He suspects tree roots are the main culprit and recommends a free video inspection of the line. I schedule an inspection. That's where I meet Andy, who informs me of a crack in my old lead pipe and offers various suggestions as to handle the situation, while also describing how they would perform each task. Cue - phrase: We're not landscapers. He writes up a few proposals. I call a couple of other plumbers with good reputations. One plumber never show ups to make a bid and the other plumber's bid is a few hundred dollars more than RR's. Roto-Rooter gets the job. A crew comes out and tears up my front lawn. This is to be expected and I am reminded of the cryptic fact that Roto-Rooter are not landscapers. After Day 1, the new pipe is set and awaits for a WSSC inspection before all of the earth that has been dug up, can be returned from whence it came. I arrive home from work on Day 2 to see that all of the earth is still sitting in the same spots where I had left it that very morning. What happened? Apparently, they did not pass inspection. Did I receive a phone call about the failed inspection? No. Did I receive an explanation for what had gone wrong? No. Was I ever given an apology for the screw up? No. All I did get was a game of phone tag with RR rep. Andy. It's odd how easy it was to get a hold of him when I wanted to hire his company to do the job. Now that the job was almost complete - all I was ever able to reach was a voice mail box. On Day 3 the mounds of dirt and back fill was returned to the hole, along with various broken bricks and trash that the crew had left behind. I understand that plumbers are not landscapers, but that is hardly an excuse to leave a person's yard in such an abysmal condition, and at least have the decency to clean up after yourselves when you leave the work site (aka someone's home)! A week later, I had a sink hole garden in my front yard. It took me weeks of hounding the main office in Jessup in order to get the final paper work and warranty mailed to my house. Inexcusable. A customer should not have to hunt down the warranty and the record of all the work done on their house. The coup de grâce of my experience with this company was the fact that they automatically charged my credit card with the second half of the total bill without my approval! I paid the first half with my card and was told that the second part of the bill was to be paid upon completion of the job. I expected a bill to be left in my mail box or something to that effect. Nothing ever came and Andy never mentioned anything about the charge to my inquiries in his voice mail messages. All he would say, was to give him a call back, but no matter when I would call - not a soul would answer my call. It's a good thing thing that I have a high amount of credit on my card, because not very many people would be able to take a $5,500 punch on their card. I don't know if this how they treat a majority of their customers, and as much as I would love to say that I will never call these people again, this much I do know ~ it would have to take a huge emergency situation at 2 o'clock in the morning with no other plumber available, in order for me to give these plumbers a call again. Such fast & easy service! I called at 6:30a because we had no hot water and someone was at our home by 9a. Zaw was so professional and trustworthy. We had to get a new water heater. He called Nyi and together, they were able to get us a new water heater installed by 3p. They were observant and told me about the setting of the new heater because we had an infant at home & they both had children too. They were both professional and cleaned up our laundry room too very well (and if they had any dirt on their shoes). I would definitely use Roto Rooter again. read more

I had a plumbing emergency. I called and they guaranteed that they could come out in two hours or less. I clearly described the problem. The dispatcher assured me that they could snake an exterior drain. 4.5 hours later the dispatcher called and said they had no ability to snake a drain. Their plumbers couldn't do that. Meanwhile I had cancelled another plumber and my basement was flooding. What does "rooter" in the name mean if they can't even do that?!? I am extremely disappointed. I would not recommend this plumber. By now, no other plumber I've contacted has availability tonight, and the damage in my basement is increasing. It was a very costly mistake to call Roto-Rooter. The dispatchers need to be honest the first time about what services are provided. read more

We've used Roto Rooter for our on-going plumbing (toilet) issue since we bought our house 4 years ago. We've gotten different estimates (all from RR but the different Service Techs that have come out) to excavate and replace the old broken drainage pipes on our property. Finally, after the 8th time of snaking the toilet in 4 years, we decided it was time. The original mapping showed that the pipes went to the right in our back yard (away from the driveway)... once the excavation crew came and started, they found that was NOT the case and they had to break up our driveway to get to the pipes that fed into the county sewer line. The job started on a Friday morning and would probably have been completed that same day if the County Inspector hadn't decided that he wanted the very long trench that went down the driveway and wrapped halfway around the back of my house 2 feet deeper. This left a HUGE pile of dirt in the driveway we share with our neighbors (luckily, they're very understanding people), along with that trench, all weekend. At least our plumbing was working properly. After the Inspector passed the job on Monday, the trench was filled in with the dirt that had been dug out, as well as new gravel. My only complaint is that I would have preferred that my driveway be re-paved to its original condition instead of graveled over. This was a very pricey job and it would have been nice to have my driveway the way it was when Roto Rooter arrived Friday morning. read more

We had an emergency repair (kitchen faucet detached from the sink - water everywhere) and needed help fast. Roto-Rooter was extremely responsive. They sent out technician Donovan Rose who stopped the water, helped us choose a new faucet, then came back immediately when the faucet arrived to install it and get us an operating kitchen again. Plumbers should look at Roto Rooter as an example of excellent and premium service. We will definitely use Roto Rooter again - even though they cost more however they stand behind their services and did multiple extra services without charging for it - even when they could have! When I found out my wife called Roto Rooter to fix a sewer backup, I was upset because I told her that I heard Roto Rooter was very expensive. To clear the sewer backup, we were quoted approximately $600 dollars. We were impressed because they cleared the clog quickly and left. Roto Rooter was clear and forthcoming about the cost before they started the work. After I read the invoice after I got home from work, I was disappointed as tech wrote he only snaked 40 feet of line, rather than 100 feet as verbally agreed before I went to work and let my wife handle it. When I informed Roto Rooter about my concerns, Roto Rooter came back and cleared 100 feet at no charge to give us some peace of mind which was excellent - they could have easily claimed and said "Tech did up to 100 feet, but didn't write it down" and they took steps to reassure us the sewer drain was clear. Guess what happened a week later after we replaced everything (drywall, molding, carpets), we had.. another sewage backup! We were both confused and upset, so we contacted Roto Rooter. They were on site within 2 hours and snaked the line. DC Water also met with the technician and they discussed my case, and they both believed everything would be good. We were hoping the third time was a charm - the third snake would clear all the issues. To be honest, we didn't have this reassurance because if we had sewage backup twice, it could happen again. We contacted Roto Rooter and requested camera service to inspect our sewage pipes. After inspection, it was identified the issue was on DC Water's side of the pipe and not with our pipes - in other words, DC Water was causing the sewage backup. The technician was getting ready to leave, and I asked about how much I owed. I was blown away when they said I didn't owe anything. I was honestly expecting to pay for this, and Roto Rooter had absolutely no obligation to give me the camera service for free. And yet, they did this because they were equally frustrated as we were. If I have plumbing issues, I will definitely use Roto Rooter again. I don't mind paying a premium if the company stands behind their services. Bonus: They're open 24x7, so if you need services in the middle of the night, make sure you give them a call. It'll cost you, but honestly, it's worth it for the peace of mind. After calling several local companies, a few of which who said they offered emergency service during all hours, with no avail, my husband called Roto-Rooter. They were a welcome change. Dispatch was understanding and helpful. A tech could be here within a few hours. Music to my ears since we had already been without running water for almost 24 hours. Jeff (#1174) arrived and couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. He was knowledgable and understanding. He worked quickly and efficiently and waited around long enough afterward to make my husband feel confident that the flooding was over. I'm thankful for the company, their employes and their rates. When you stand by a warranty like these guys did, you get my business for life. They've always been prompt emergency responders, and cost just as much as any other plumber. We had to get our sewer line replaced 3 years ago- they came out, did what seemed to be a good job, even spared our walkways and driveway by going through parts of old line (new PVC fits inside the old terra cotta lines.) Cost us 10grand, because the old line was flawed and flowed UPHILL partially, causing water to stand in pipes, rotting out under the basement- I watched the cameras to be sure, as I never heard of basement pipe being replaced. Big, big job. I wondered about using parts of old line considering problem, but they were the plumbers, and all seemed to work fine. Well-- County came out a few months ago, as it was running slow due to holding water. Turns out-- line was flawed, they didn't correct all the uphill sloping. Called Roto Rooter- without fuss, the came right out, assessed the situation, ADMITTED they goofed by following original line w/o correcting grade, and installed a brand new sewer line in a different direction. BIGGER than the last job. ALL FOR FREE WITHOUT ANY HASSLES AT ALL. Both times, line was working at the end of day 1, by end of day 2 clean up was complete. Including patching basement concrete. Yes, they messed up first time-- but who's heard of a company willing to give you over 10grand in repairs not only FREE, but completely HASSLE FREE!?!?!? Anyone can goof. It takes a big person or company, and a big and HONEST company, to stand by such a costly error and make it right w/o hassle. Good for them!! They earned a customer for life!!! read more

Extortion-level, dishonest pricing I have a slow drain in my yard that is partially clogged from mulch. I called Roto Rooter DC to get the drain snaked. I've used them before for a simple disposal replacement in DC and they were premium priced for that to say the least but I was in a bind so had to agree. They wanted $400 to snake an outdoor drain that is only slow--not clogged. This is a 10-minute job. Unbelievable and dishonest price gouging. Find an honest plumber before you turn to these people. read more

Super fast and efficient. Nobody likes to call a plumber but they were there on a Sunday within 90 minutes of calling.

I've been lucky enough never to need their services, but someone I knew had a bit of a plumbing emergency and Roto-Rooter did a pretty good job. They showed up less than an hour after being called at noon on a Sunday and were able to get a main sewage line unclogged without any trouble. The plumber they sent was friendly and professional, and while the service wasn't cheap it wasn't outrageous considering how promptly they arrived on a weekend. I can't say anything about how good they are at major work, but if you have a problem that needs to be fixed ASAP this seems like a good company. read more

As advertised! Called Roto Rooter at 10am to have a technician come out and swap out my garbage disposal. By 10:30am, William had arrived and began working on the job. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and finished before noon! A bit on the pricey side ($239 after $50 Yelp discount) but it's a flat fee and William had to do a little bit of work to adjust the pipes since the new disposal wasn't a perfect fit. read more

I had a water line break in my house and had to have DC Water turn me off at the road. They said to have a licensed plumber come out and turn me back on. Called Roto-Rooter this morning because they offer free estimates. They came when scheduled. It cost $120 to have my water turned back on, which was pretty expensive to stick a pole in the ground and turn the water main back on in my opinion, but the fact they showed when they said they would was impressive to me. The technician I had was Jonathan, I would definitely recommend Roto-Rooter based on this experience, just be prepared to spend more than you would want to. I am updating my review after speaking to a guy in the office.... apparently plumbers make a ton of money per hour so $120 for 15 minutes is normal. :) read more

I recently had a backup/ overflow problem in my home. I call Roto-Rooter since they pop-up first online and they had there 24/7 service. The customer service representative told me they would have a technician at my house within the hour. The tech arrived 15 minutes after I got off the phone. I was really surprised on how fast he got to my house. Once he arrived, the tech evaluated the situation and explained to me the options I had. He told me he was gonna do the cheapest option first, then if that didn't work he was gonna have to do his second option. Which cost more. Luckily his first solution worked. He had everything unclogged within 30 minutes. The tech was very friendly and informative. We then had another representative from there company stop by and explain to us the aftermath damages done to basement. He explained to us how the effected areas need to be removed and replaced. He helped us file a claim with our homeowners insurance as well. The Roto-Rooter clean up team wanted to clean up the same day as well but unfortunately my family had plans. We rescheduled for the next day and everything effect was removed and ready for repairs. This was a very unfortunate situation for me and my family but Roto-Rooter eased the frustration with there service. Thank You!!! read more

I called Roto-Rooter to repair a small slow drip coming from a pipe in one of my closets. The technician, Conrad, was here for 15 minutes before he realized he needed to go to the store to get pipe small enough to replace the failing section. Before departing he asked me directly "how much do you want to pay today." Shocked I said well I want to pay what the service is really worth and not get ripped off. He then said there's a $245 flat fee for me coming out here, and I'm going to charge you an extra $100 for parts I get from the store and my time for going to get the parts. So, the technician is gone for almost two hours and the Home Depot is literally 8 miles from my home. He shows back up with maybe 3 feet of a very small PVC piping and a metal connector he was going to use to splice the old pipe with the new. Didn't seem like $100 worth of parts to me by any means. Took him about 10 minutes after returning from the store to make the repair. All in all, he was in my home for 30-40 minutes, where majority of his time was spent talking to me about the high prices to live in the area where I live, and earned $345. Considering a few months ago I called the same Roto-Rooter and had a complete drain under one of my bathroom sinks replaced for $276 with far more labor and parts included I am beyond disgusted. While the technician was friendly generally speaking , talk about dishonest premium pricing for minimal service!! **UPDATE** Immediately after posting my review I got a message from Pat in customer service asking for my address and stating a official complaint was filed with my technician's district manager. Shortly after that I got a call from a manager at the branch where my technician was dispatched from who expressed apologies. He noted that the technician's behavior was not appropriate and should in no way be a reflection of the company as a whole. He put the technician on a "do not send" list for my address and offered me a good portion of my funds back to compensate me fire my horrible experience. That's the kind of customer service I truly appreciate and will get Roto-Rooter future business from me. they could have ignored my post but took time out to ensure the situation was rectified. I woke up Saturday morning (March 14, 2015) to a non-working toilet and immediately called Roto-Rooter. They verbally told me what time the technician would arrive as well as sent a follow-up email. Additionally, they called to provide an update (really liked this) as well as called to say the technician was on his way. When the technician, Lal, arrived - I liked how he introduced himself, put on his booties, and immediately diagnosed the problem. Since I liked the customer service (call to intro) I added on more work....would have added more but had some where else to go. Had Roto Rooter come out to fix a clogged pipe in my basement. Service representative was Donald Smith. He tried for about 30 minutes and said he couldn't get the drain unclogged and I probably had a collapsed pipe... seemed like he was giving up because it was hard. I called another plumber who came out and fixed it with no problem, the plumber said he gets calls like this all the time where Roto Rooter said it's a collapsed pipe but in reality it's just a hard clog. read more

My husband called RotoRooter on a Saturday afternoon around 4:00 PM because we had a clogged drain. They said they would be there in about an hour. Much to our pleasant surprise I think they were at our house in about 30 minutes. The gentleman who came was very efficient and did his work promptly. I think he was there around 45 minutes. He used a cable machine to clean the sanitary drain through the toilet. I was a bit surprised though that it cost as much as it did, but will say he did an excellent job. read more

Jeff #1174 and Chris #2952 showed up at my house within an hour of my call. They were both friendly and courteous. They gave me an estimate on installing my new disposal quickly. I was disappointed at how high the estimate was but Jeff and I quickly agreed to a more reasonable price. Chris did the install expertly. He tested the install thoroughly for leaks and cleaned up after himself. They even took the old disposal away. I was pleased with the service which I received. read more
