We tried Royal India tonight after seeing the restaurant come up on Tik Tok. The food and service was fantastic. I think they may have been struggling to recover from COVID impacts. Everything was perfect. We had the butter chicken, paneer tikka and garlic naan. The food here was some of the best we have had in the Triangle. Definitely come try this hidden gem out. I enjoyed my lunch here today. The only thing keeping from a 5 star rating is that I don't like to spend more than $10 before tip on a lunch buffet. Not saying the value is not there, but $10 is my thing to spend on a buffet. This is the second Indian Buffet in Raleigh and I cannot figure out why they all deliver the naan bread to the table and not just have it out there on the buffet. I like to start with naan and sometimes the server does not have it at the table when the meal begins. The selection of dishes was extensive, I can honestly say this buffet probably had more choices than any I have been to in the past, and yes the food looked fresh. There were not of the tell tale signs of age on any of the food, and at buffets we all know that the dried out edges and the film across the top mean, and Royal India had none of those issues. The buffet was well stocked the entire time I was there, you did not have to wait or not try a dish. I do wish they had some lamb or goat dishes, again my second buffet in Raleigh and neither had any goat, and I do enjoy the goat. There were both vegetarian and omnivore dishes available, and both were spiced to my personal liking, they might not be spiced for you, but hey there is nothing that I can do or say that will change that. I am not sure if I will go again in the future and the reason is that it was just a little pricey for me for a buffet. I am sure at some point I will go, but it will be much lower in the rotation than it should be. My husband and I went here because we are new to the area and we love Indian food. The restaurant was completely empty. The food was mediocre in comparison to other Indian restaurants I have been to. It was extremely overpriced. We found a better restaurant that is literally 1/2 the price of this place. It cost of $80 to eat here and there wasn't anything special about it. The service wasn't anything special either and the Indian tea tasted like it was a premade mix, not fresh from scratch. I've driven past this place many times, but today was my first time trying it. COVID: We dined in on a Tuesday evening, and it was pretty empty. In a spacious place, there were only 2 other parties so we sat far away from away from everyone which made me feel safe. They require you to sanitize your hands and check your temperature at the door, which I really appreciated. FOOD: We got tandoori chicken, curry chicken, garlic naan, and regular naan. Everything was delicious! The naan was buttery and perfectly crispy. The tandoori chicken came out sizzling on a fajita-type plate. It was moist, charred, and had really good flavor. The chicken curry - I'm picky about chicken curry but was pleased with it! Although everything was delicious, it was expensive. $18 for chicken curry, for example. I would eat here more often if it was cheaper. SERVICE: There was only 1 server working. One dish came out about 5-7 mins later than the other dish, which is a little long in my opinion. The owner came by later and apologized, saying the order didn't print in the back. I appreciated that. At the end of dinner, we paid on a portable machine which was nice. Royal India is one of Raleigh's best and most authentic Indian restaurants. The menu was incredibly extensive with so much to choose from, including dishes of all flavor and spice profiles. If you want to try a spicier dish, I'd recommend pairing it with a mango lassi to cool the bite. If you're newer to Indian food or spice, the staff would be a great resource to inquire about your preferences or questions. We were treated with such hospitality. Our server offered suggestions and took his time reviewing the different plates. Their pick-up option seemed to be busy that night. I have been going to this restaurant since it opened. At first the prices were very good but now they are about $5-$8 higher than other Indian restaurants. One time I was there for dinner with friends and a fight broke out between the owner and an employee. The bar liquor is behind the checkout and even though there was a barrier between there and our table, the irate employee broke a bottle or something and glass ended up in my meal. The owner would not give me another meal nor did he take anything off of the price. I mean I wasn't finished eating and he thought I should just pick the glass out and continue eating. I should have stopped going then, but the food is very good. He waters down the liquor. The last time my husband and I went, I was looking over the overpriced bill and noticed a charge on it that I wasn't sure what it was. When we asked he said it was a credit card surcharge. He said the notice was posted at the entrance. When I looked for it, I couldn't find it and asked him where it was. He got irritated and then noticed it wasn't visible. It was on a shelf under the cash register. I won't be back. It is a shame because the food really is good. Good selection of chutneys and appetizers, onion kulchi, aloo ghobi, saag paneer, lentil daal, butter chicken, curry chicken, tandoori chicken and naan. Now you can't expect too much out of a buffet but I was hoping for a bit more from Royal India. The dining room is pretty large and service was fine. I did find out that Royal India and Royal India Express have different owners. And if I had my druthers (love having druthers every now and then :) I'd stick to Royal India Express on Glenwood. It was understandable during the pandemic, but it has not been coming back to its former glory. Servers are indifferent or flat out rude. Food quality is hit or miss, and they have zero comprehension of spice level. Sometimes I ask for spice and there is none. Other times I ask for mild and it is inferno. I met a friend for a girls dinner out, firstly we were the only people in the restaurant for the whole evening and secondly, there seemed to be only one waitress who did not speak a word of English. I believe it was the owner who finally took our order, they have frozen drinks on the menu but apparently no longer serve alcoholic only non-alcoholic frozen drinks. We both ordered a main dish, naan bread to share with a glass of house red. The food was okay but nothing to write home about, the portion was small and chicken not very tender. We said we wanted to split the check so the owner took our credit cards and ran them at the table without giving either one of us a copy of the bill. We requested a copy so he printed off two copies and gave them to us - they were not itemized and in fact both had my name on which seemed strange, also the price was just under $40.00 so we thought he was showing us the complete bill before it was split, but no, this was the bill once it had been split in half and apparently we had paid $10 for the naan bread - when we asked about it he said it was two portions. Firstly we did not order two portions but it was only two pieces sliced in half. He just said the amount was correct including his tip so we decided to cut our losses and leave. This restaurant is underwhelming, expensive and service almost non-existent, I would recommend Azitra in Briar Creek which is well worth a visit with wonderful food and ambience and avoid this place like the plague. read more

It was the tale of 2 dining experiences. When you first walk in you are greeted and asked to take your temperature on the electric scanner (which I appreciated during this time of COVID) Then you are abruptly told to walk through (not guided as a normal host/hostess would do) their labyrinth of a setup to get to whatever table they want to seat you at. It was lunch time when I arrived and it was just myself so naturally I wanted to hear any lunch specials they may have. I asked my server if they had any and she she simply replied, "Yes." I then asked, "Well, can I hear them?" She said they're posted outside and walked away. Well excuuuuuuuuuuse me... A minute later she comes back and again I ask, "Can I hear the lunch specials?" She again replies, "They're outside." So now I'm feeling my blood pressure rise, so I say, "I understand that, but YOU are my server, so I would like to hear the lunch specials. Do you know them?" At this point I could tell she was flustered so she hollers back to the kitchen and outcomes who I can only assume was the chef and he gives me the very simple thing that I asked for... the specials. So that was one experience. The other experience was the actual food itself. I must say it was quite good. Not the best I've had. But since moving here from California it has been hard to find Indian food that matches what I've had back home. My plate consisted of chicken tikka masala, goat curry, rice, a samosa, and a generous basket of naan bread. The tikka was very tasty. Not the consistency in sauce that I'm used to as I am used to a more runny sauce and this was a very thick and grainy texture. Not ideal for dipping your naan as I love to do. But I loved the flavor and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The goat curry was also extremely flavorful and well seasoned. My only gripe is that I would constantly get little bones in just about every bite. I had to keep spitting them out onto my plate. Not an ideal situation. The samosa was excellent. Everything about it was top notch and it was quite possibly the best I've ever had. The rice was decent. Nothing to scream about. Just a very average, standard Indian rice. The naan was also decent. A little dry for my taste. I like my naan to have some butter, garlic, and some chopped parsley on top. This was just a very simple, stripped down naan. Still decent tho. If it weren't for the poor service I would've at least rated this place a 4. If they can better train their staff to be more knowledgeable about the menu, put a smile on their face, and be attentive to their guests, this place could be something special. read more
