Very disappointing visit here. Like many other reviews noted, I also was upcharged without explanation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was the only patron in the restaurant between 11:30 AM and 12:30 on a weekday[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. There was one DoorDash order picked up. I can see why this place is doing poorly. I will not return. I ordered a lunch special which was $18 on the Internet and $19 on the menu inside. OK, no big deal, some places don't keep their Internet updated. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The menu and drink menu were dirty and the corners worn off, had holes in them, and had writing all over them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They clearly don't want to spend the money to reprint their menus. The food was decent, but nothing special. The chicken curry was served on the bone and you had to chew off little pieces of chicken. I ordered extra spicy, but the curry was bland. The butter chicken was better, extra spicy as I ordered. The Samosa was tiny, but good. The naan was greasy but tasty. When I went to pay, the bill i was charged $19.67. I asked why approximately 4% was added. (there was also an up charge to the soda). The waitress, who was Hispanic and did not speak good English, did not know. I asked her to go get the manager or owner. She went to the back, came out and said there was no one there, but the cook and the cook didn't know either. I had no choice but to pay the up charge. She acted like no one had ever brought it to her attention. Very sharp business practices. I wonder if this is a new owner, the old guy used to come out and meet people and I cannot imagine him ripping people off like this. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At least I know why there was only one person (me) in that restaurant in one hour.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Unfortunately, any Goodwill this owner had left is gone with me and apparently most of his other former patrons. With so many new Indian restaurants open in the triangle since the pandemic ended, I can't see this guy staying in business. His demise will be well deserved.

Amazing service and incredible food- it's one of the city's highest rated Indian restaurants for a reason. I don't get too crazy with Indian cuisine, but this was by far the best Indian I've had in the Triangle. Chicken Biryani and garlic kulcha is all I'll ever need. 10/10.

This restoCame in for lunch and ordered #3 it has 3 different viants Chicken curry, Palek Paneer and another chicken. Basmati rice, samosa, salad , bread and a dessert. For all that food it's a little more than a regular lunch budget but you'll still have some for take home. Gulab Jamun is the dessert it's like a round donut with syrup. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambience is nice and server is nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I order medium heat when they ask but I recommend mild. They also have other lunch sets. I've been to other Indian restaurants but for a lunch with this offer it gives you a taste of everything without needing to order for everything separately. A must try if your in the area.

Flying horse lager, I will recommend as a great light beer. Chicken Xacuti, Royal Naan made with lamb and rice.

I entered to eat after my flight arrived in Raleigh, this was close to my planned route and I am so glad I stopped in. Service was very friendly, fast, recommendations were amazing, the perfect amount of spice. Music was easy to listen to, the volume was not overwhelming, it would have been easy to have a conversation. I had the Chicken Xacuti, with Royal naan made with lamb. Food was prepared to perfection. Dessert was the Glaub Jamun, it was delectable, talk about slowing down to enjoy your senses. I can't wait to come back to Raleigh for dinner

My friend saw a tik toc about this place and we decided to give it a try. It is the definition of classic. They are one of the oldest Indian joints in NC. Their food is on the pricey side but worth it. The service is here is very hospitable. Our server was very patient and understanding. We had little knowledge about Indian cuisine and he was more than willing to give us some history lessons. The place has a very classy, boujee look to it. It is adorned with timeless pictures of royalty. Before the bathrooms, you see pictures of the owner with celebrities and political figures. The owner is well-known in the community and it shows that the place has an ingrown network. Very impressed and would recommend anyone wanting to try traditional Indian food. Sidenote: I've never had Indian beer before. Let me say. This is the best beer I've ever had. Honest

Lunch special #3 (medium spiced, the perfect amount of heat) -Butter Chicken -Samosa Chaat -Bhuna Goat -Palak Paneer -Naan

My first time @royal.india.nc was a very memorable one. Royal India has served the Raleigh area for over 30 years and offers an array of unique dishes. The food was incredible and I was so excited to try their lunch special #3, which included: Butter Chicken: Aromatic juicy tandoori chicken prepared in a buttery tomato based cream sauce full of flavor and a silky smooth rich texture. Samosas: These are pyramid shaped flaky puffed pastries. Inside is hiding a delicious blend of potatoes, peas & spices. My first bite into it was a surprise of flavor that I could not get enough of. This is the perfect appetizer for this meal. Bhuna Goat: tender fall off the bone savory meat, tossed in a rich flavorful brown sauce. You are greeted with garlic, cumin, and a bit of bitter that rounds everything out nicely. This goes especially well with the yellow rice. Palak Paneer: fresh homemade cheese cooked in a creamy spinach sauce with delicious earthy flavors. It's perfect for eating by itself, but I liked it best with their fresh baked naan. After finishing my wonderful meal, I was given a tour of the restaurant and shown the process of how Royal India makes their naan from scratch. I learned that they bake the naan in a tradional clay oven known as a Tandoor and it was super cool watching as the naan rose and bubble as it baked. I can't wait to return to @royal.india.nc for more delicious dishes.

The fiance and I decided to stop in even though we were originally in pursuit of an Indian buffet and we were not disappointed! There was an abundance of selections on the lunch special list but we went for the #1- Butter chicken, tandoori chicken, curry chicken, samosa, naan bread,, and rice. I opted for double of butter chicken on my plate because curry is sometimes too spicy for me and they were happy to accommodate. :) Everything came out on one large plate minus the Naan bread that was in a side basket and dessert came at the end of the meal. The portion size was perfect that we left full and happy even without a buffet spread. We will definitely be back when we next crave some authentic Indian cuisine!!

Please go elsewhere. Do not buy into social media. Called my order in which included vegetable samosas, palak paneer, chicken curry, and garlic naan. Upon arrival, there was no one attending the front desk. I waited a few minutes and then decided to peek into the restaurant area. A man, I'm assuming the owner, was serving. When he saw me he nodded his head, I thought I would at least be greeted. 5+ minutes pass and still no one has the decency to at least greet me. By this time, it had been about 50 minutes since I placed my order and was told it would be 30 minutes. And the restaurant was not even half full, so they weren't that busy. ...Still no one bothers to greet me. I contemplated leaving but decided to give them 5 more minutes. I decide to go and stand by the entrance to the dining area so they could clearly see me waiting. A few minutes later...the owner finally comes with my order. I'd read reviews about bill discrepancies, so I wanted to check each item. They had added a service fee for using a card, which he ends up removing. Now about the food...hands down the worst Indian food I've had. The samosas were greasy and lacked flavor. I've had much better frozen samosas. The chicken curry only tasted like onions, nothing else. Palak paneer seriously lacked flavor. It was cream and spinach, nothing else. And the garlic naan, worst everrrr. My first amateur attempt at home was much better. Nothing tasted fresh. Never ever again would I return here. ****AND their sanitation score was in the low 90s..I definitely should've just left when I saw that.****

Amazing authentic indian food made from scratch. we came late at night and got food to-go. the owner was super nice and made sure everything was done right. Me and my friend ordered everything vegan and Gluten free. Spice level was perfect, sweat and tears, just how i like it.. lol. The pakoras could have more substance cuz it was mostly just spinach it tasted like. The rice was especially delicious Very nice environment too. next time we'll dine in my recommendations : stuffed baby eggplant - this was hands down my favorite thing aloo gobi masala - very intense flavors

Ups and downs at this spot, with some very well spiced house made desserts and a deft hand with the tandoori oven. The breads, normally a high point of the experience for me in an Indian restaurant, were unfortunately tough and chewy. The prices were quite high for the portions. The atmosphere is pleasant, but the staff seem inexperienced. The food was a mixed bag of enjoyable, average and not particularly good. Probably would not return due to the higher prices for food that is not better than any of the other Indian spots in town. read more

Poor service, high prices and mediocre food dominate this understaffed shop. The owner was very visible and completely unengaged the entire time. Is his office a table on the floor? Is he there to intimidate the staff, who are rather sullen and invisible? We gave them a try based on reviews here. After our regrettable visit there I checked the reviews again. I should have put them in order by date before reading. It seems they have one happy customer then a slew of people who experienced what we did. Indian food is at the top of my favorites, but Royal India was nothing more than a Royal Failure. read more

Due to Covid, they are not offering a buffet, but they have 10+ different combination meals available that allow you to have multiple items on your plate like a buffet. We have gone several times for lunch and the portions are very large and include a delicious dessert for $13.99. Very good value and delicious food. We really hope this place can stay in business through the pandemic. Tables are spread out, you have to use hand sanitizer and take your temperature before you walk in, so we felt very safe with the whole dining experience. Definitely worth trying! read more

My Indian husband and I ate here tonight for dinner. So so good!! Best Indian food we have found in Raleigh so far. We ordered samosa chaat and aloo tiki for appetizers and they were sooooo yummy. If you come here, order them!! Then we got goat masala, butter chicken, garlic butter naan (not on the menu, but we asked them if they had it and they made it for us!) and roti for dinner. Again, it was all amazing! This will definitely become our regular Indian restaurant. The service was also very attentive and did a great job making sure we had everything we needed. Also a bonus, the interior is definitely more unique than other Indian restaurants we've seen. Just go, okay? Go!! read more

I'd been going for decades and noticed the edges starting to fray over the past few years. Little things like no paneer in the saag paneer. Naan that is either chewy or like toast. Being ignored at the front door - no, not ignored. Eye contact made, but we weren't seated right away. Things like this once in a while are expected but they started to become the norm. But the thing that will made me decide to never, ever step foot in there again: we watched a customer go down the buffet and push a piece of chicken on the floor out of the way. A few minutes later a waiter walked by it, picked it up, and tossed in back into the buffet container. My friend and I put down our forks, paid our bill and got the heck out of there. I think they were a Raleigh institution before other Indian restaurants came to town. Now it seems that they're riding on their credentials instead of maintaining the front-runner position. I can forgive minor slips, but putting food on the floor back into the buffet? C'mon. read more

This little gem is close to our house but unfortunately only have delivery thru (expensive) third parties. That's okay, for the quality and service we will gladly pick up take out! This place was absolutely amazing! We ordered multiple dishes, both meat and vegetarian, and everything was so delicious. The spice level was just what we expected and the portions were perfect, a great value for the price. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and helpful. The owner even gave us milk balls at the end of the meal to try. The ambiance was also very pleasing and felt authentic all the way around. We live an hour away but will definitely come back for more! read more

Great place to dine in or take out. One of the best Indian restaurant's in the area. I'd recommend the chicken tikka masala and the samosas. They also have a really good vegetarian selection. All the food is definitely on the spicy side. I normally get medium, but when I'm here I get mild and it's plenty hot. read more

This place has the best Indian food in the North Raleigh area!! The owner takes his pride of his North Indian culture, and presents it beautifully in his food. The food is spectacular!! The garlic naan bread and chicken tikka masala are classic favorites!! Some special items on the menu include traditional chicken curry, royal naan, and lamb seekh kebab with its incredible spice! Horrible!!! Wouldn't recommend to anyone. I wish I could give negative ratings.. were on our way to Atlanta and for some stupid reason this was the only Indian restaurant showed up in 50 miles radius . So with high hopes we drove 50 miles to get Indian food ... unfortunately the food was horrible same as the service for the money they are charging , floor was so sticky my wife 's shoe stuck on it same with the bathroom. Only thing I liked was the watermelon which was one day old at best . I hope they keep only two items but edible read more

Sunday Brunch...limited amount of food, not replenished often enough. Only one person working it seemed. I just expected better and was definitely disappointed. Not sure why there was a soccer game on the large screen with the volume on. Was hoping for Bollywood and I got Barcelona vs. Madrid. You guys can do better. read more

Located off Capital Blvd in Raleigh, Royal India is one of the oldest Indian restaurants in the Triangle area of NC. We offer authentic Indian vegetarian, vegan, and non-vegetarian cuisine. We offer dine-in, take-out, delivery (using 3rd party services) and catering services. Established in 1990.

Royal India is the oldest Indian restaurant in Raleigh, NC. When we opened our door in Raleigh, we soon became a popular eatery for many South Asians (natives of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh & neighboring countries) who craved food from their homeland. Overtime, we popularized Indian food in a broad segment of population and won awards for being one of the finest Indian restaurants around. In order to offer an authentic Indian cuisine, Royal India prepares food in traditional Indian charcoal oven or tandoor, an essential requirement for quality food preparation in many part of South Asia. This form of cooking prepares crispy naan bread, grilled vegetables, tandoori chicken and kabobs with delectable taste, aroma and texture. A native of India, Ram has traveled extensively in the Middle East, Europe and has been a resident of North Carolina since the late 80s. Ram has a knack for making incredibly delicious dishes. Located in Raleigh, NC, Royal India is his crown achievement and has set a standard for Indian cuisine around the area. Ram has hosted many public officials and celebrities from the U.S., India, and around the world. His goal is to serve the highest quality Indian cuisine to everyone, irrespective of their budget. I'd like to recognize Sam Sanchez at the bar, who guided me from cocktail to entree and beyond for my eventual second visit while in Raleigh. He listened closely to my taste preferences, and his recommendations were flawless (although I can't imagine ANYTHING on the menu isn't delightful). On my first visit I started with the Byadgi Chili Shrimp and then feasted on the Lamb Sheekh Kebab. The shrimp texture was just right and the coconut sauce is a perfect compliment. The lamb kebab comes in two separate pieces; one is wrapped in naan and the other is naked. The chili beurre blanc sauce has a kick that I really enjoyed! And my favorite: Dal-e Tamasha, 24 hours slow cooked black lentil. My mouth is watering even as I think about it. You might think something as humble as lentils could not make one's heart race... but you would be wrong. My second visit saw me reunited with my dear Dal-e Tamasha plate and what became the pinnacle of my visit to Raleigh: MUSHROOM "MADE IN HEAVEN" dish. It is difficult to describe how AMAZING every bite is. There is a complexity of flavors that somehow blend AND standout. We arrived on a Thursday night at 6pm with a group of 5. The dining area didn't really accommodate a group that size, but they made it work by moving tables around, which was nice. The place was not very large, but there was maybe only one other family eating inside. The bathroom was clean. I split two dishes with my son-- salmon tikka masala and shrimp (prawn) saag, both coming with rice. We were given some papadum, I think, as a snack as we waited on the food, along with some spicy dips. Food came in maybe 10 minutes or so, which was great timing. However, I have to say, both dishes we tried were underwhelming. The shrimp was oddly translucent and not very flavorful in its dish, and the spinach in the saag wasn't especially tasty (though it did have a nice spiciness). The tikka masala sauce was great, but the salmon also was pretty underwhelming. We both said we'd probably just get chicken next time and not splurge the extra for the salmon. No dish was "bad", but just we expected them to be delicious and they were just OK. I'm just really surprised given how many people said this was the "best Indian" they'd had. The staff were friendly-- refilled drinks well and were good at answering questions. And the price was reasonable. Altogether, I'll give it 4 stars given the great location, good service, good price, but not 5 given the food was "just OK". Realistically, I probably wouldn't go back-- we have lots of great Indian in Durham and Chapel Hill, so I'd rather wait and get that.

When I compare the food and environment here to other places that offer Indian cuisine buffets, for the $20 with tax I'd rather go to Kabab and Curry not too far from here on Hillsborough St. There is more food available, it is fresher, the environment overall seems more hygienic and well-organized, and the food has better flavor and seems less greasy at Kabab and Curry. The only difference is having to pay for parking or parking a bit further away for a free spot--but for what you pay at Curry Club and they only offer buffet over the weekend, Kabab and Curry is better and offers more value and is where I will probably go from now on. The only way Curry Club's buffet would make sense is if they brought the price down. I'd put their food quality about on par with China Queen's weekday Chinese buffet, but China Queen has the better sense to charge less for the quality and experience they offer their customers. If you're already in the plaza and it's convenient to drop in over the weekend, give Curry Club a try, but if you can make it a little further north, Kabab and Curry is the better place. It is worth noting that Curry Club has interesting theme days and specials that may offer more value and culinary enjoyment than what I was able to experience while I was there including weekend breakfast combos, and weeknight dosa, biryani, and rice deals. They also have momos and spring rolls that look delicious (though I can't vouch yet). They stock authentic items like frozen Shahi Kulfi (not included in the buffet), and beverages like Delhi Darling, Thumsup, and Limca. If I go back, it'll be to sample dosas at Dosa Night or see what I think about the momos and spring rolls. I'll update when and if I find out and get to sample more.

This dish is a must try when you visit Taverna Agora in downtown Raleigh. Lastly, someone at the table exclaimed that their grilled salmon was one of the best salmon dishes he had ever enjoyed as its unique presentation features pickled beetroot, sautéed spinach, and a lemon caper sauce. I had the Poseidon Branzino which was fabulous. The dish had roasted branzino, medley of sautéed cherry tomatoes and onions, fresh herb rice, and skordalia (I had to look up what that is - a fascinating Greek garlic puree). The blending of all those flavors made for a scrumptious dinner, and thanks to the kitchen team for preparing it perfectly so that I could even eat the skin of the fish. We shared two bottles of Assyrtiko wine which is one of our favorite Greek wines after visiting Greece a few years ago. The wine list at Taverna is simple but thorough and fun to experiment with. Walking in you'll feel like you've been transported to a village like, Greek atmosphere. To sit down you'll check in with the host and then be seated either inside or on the rooftop. We opted for the rooftop as it was a nice evening. To start I ordered the Baklava Old Fashioned (Bulleit bourbon, homemade baklava syrup, Angostura bitters, and Amarena cherries) which was amazing. Next we ordered the trio of all three spreads (Tzatziki, sun-dried tomato hummus, and spicy feta spread) and the calamari. Both dishes were excellent and I definitely prefer the spicy feta and tzatziki sauce. For my main course I ordered the Tomahawk Pork Chop (Chargrilled tomahawk chop, spinach, barrel-aged feta, herb aioli, Greek lemon potatoes) which was a bit disappointing. I probably should have sent the pork chop back as it was cooked well done and was very dry but was I was too hungry and didn't want to make my parents wait. For dessert I ordered Baklava Cheesecake (New York-style cheesecake with nuts and baklava filling) which was very nice and my mom ordered the Limoncello cake (lemon cake with lemon cream frosting) which was definitely the star of the show. If I'm back downtown I may try Taverna Agora again but will definitely avoid ordering the pork chop.

My husband spilled an entire beer and we asked the guy who came to help wipe it up if we could get another. His response was a very snippy, "...that's not my responsibilty". No help at all. 4. While we were still deciding on drinks, someone came by and took away the drink menu. we asked for two more, they brought only one, then someone came by and took it again! Since we now couldn't get a waiters attention, I finally went to the station myself to get one. 5. The food : Brussels sprouts in sauce were placed in front of us with no serving utensil, we asked for extra roumelade for the Pickles & Peppers but it took so long to arrive that there was nothing left to dip in it, wrong plates were placed in front of us, hamburgers were WAY over cooked and super dry, sweet potato fries were very soggy, sushi was bland. The espresso caramel chocolate malt that we loved so much before had zero malt flavor and was pretty much melted by the time we got it. We asked for six spoons for the malt and they brought five. They serve small plates, which we love because it gives you the chance to try different things and experience a variety of flavors. We started with the fried pork belly on tostones. It was perfectly seasoned, topped with avocado, and every bite just melted in your mouth. Next, we had the tamarind sticky ribs with a tamarind mango barbecue sauce. This was a perfect example of how simplicity can create complex flavors. The ribs were cooked just right -- not completely falling off the bone, but tender enough that when you bit into them, the meat pulled apart so easily. They were juicy, full of flavor, and had just the right touch of spice from the chili flakes. Then we moved on to the mini arepas, and oh my God. They had slow-cooked pork, guava barbecue sauce, and fried papas on top. The arepa itself was crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. The savory pork paired with the sweetness of the guava barbecue sauce was incredible, and the crunch from the fried papas took it to another level. Now, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but my wife does not. I wanted dessert, and we were leaning toward the tres leches, but our waitress highly recommended the bread pudding. I am not usually a fan of bread pudding at all, but her recommendations had been on point all night, so I decided to trust her. I am so glad we did. They take a Mexican bolillo, soak it overnight in tres leches, then pan-sear it to create this crispy caramelized outside while keeping the inside warm, soft, and sweet. It is topped with crema and toasted coconut, then they pour warm guava syrup over it and serve it with a scoop of coconut sorbet. The layers of flavor in that dessert were unreal. Honestly, it may have been the best dessert we have ever had. And remember, my wife is not big on sweets -- she usually only takes one bite of dessert, but this time she tried to eat over half of it. Lol. I highly recommend this place. The food, the service, the drinks, and the atmosphere were all amazing. And after dinner, you can even head upstairs to work off the food with salsa lessons and a dance club. This is definitely a spot worth checking out! Este lugar fue absolutamente increíble. They check do a touch-less temperature check and hand sanitizer dispenser before you can enter the dining room which is awesome. Food is absolutely out of this world!! I've been here twice in a week and whenever I find myself in Raleigh in the future I will definitely be back!! They treat you like family and have a genuine kindness to them that you only get in family run businesses. First time was lamb cooked over potato's and recooked in some kind of curry. Absolutely blew my mind!! Tonight was a chicken tikki masala with samosas! The atmosphere was great, service was prompt and attentive. I've worked in restaurants for over 10 years and after this first impression I know I have found my new regular spot. The owner is very friendly and personable. Truly a food experience that everyone should have. Mango chutney that was to die for and Naan so soft and flavorful. Owner was great, he explained everything to us and made us feel at home. It is hard to find a South Asian restaurant in the Triangle area that consistently offers high quality Indian food. Royal India has been able to maintain their quality for about three decades. Stop by if you are interested in authentic North Indian/Pakistani food. Great to see they are taking covid-19 safety precautions. read more

I have been coming to Royal India for 20 years. This is by far the best Indian food you can get in the Triangle area of North Carolina. You should specially their North Indian specialties including butter chicken and Palak Paneer. It is great that they have multiple delivery services, especially during COVID-19. read more
