We walked in around 515, buffet posted for 430-830 was set up, that's okay we will do ala carte. Sizzling beef was good, sweet sour soup was good spicier then most places which I liked but my daughter couldn't handle. And honey walnut shrimp was kinda ehhh... better name might've been sweet mayo walnut shrimp. Royal Palace is now offering their lunch buffet for dinner now for $1 more on weekends and holidays. My wife, mom, brother and brother in law (my other one who lives in Denver) went there tonight. It's not worth it as much as lunch. For dinner there is really no difference in the dishes and actually, you may end up with some items leftover from lunch. Maybe that's why we noticed another dip in quality. When restaurants do something like this, it's not a good sign and it's a move to try drum up more business as their sales could be dipping. One of their better dishes they offered before, shitake mushrooms is now taken off, I guess it does get expensive. We were invited to this place for regular dinner in the past and it was pretty good. The lemon chicken I ordered, (that came w/orange sauce) was SUPER SALTY. Most of the chicken was un eatable. I mean it could be chewed, but that was it. The sweet sour spare ribs had no flavor at all. It looked great, but when I tasted it, it was very bland. The meat itself lacked flavor. The house noodles also looked great. This place used to be a million times better. Every time I give it another chance it fails me yet again. Their service is really bad especially if there is a large party there. That means that your little party of two (Who will have the smaller bill and smaller tip) will get no attention. On my last visit we waited 30 minutes to get our order taken, another 30 to get the food, another fifteen to get plates and chopsticks (by then the food was cold) and another five to get asked if we were done and if we needed boxes. When we got our check, there was a mysterious $0.52 added to the bill. It was only change so I just paid it and left with no intention of ever returning. I wonder how many other people they do this to and get away with it. Everything is written in Chinese so most people will just trust what the wait staff wrote and pay the bill. The only real exception would be the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Those were pretty darn good, but I'm not willing or able to eat all-I-can-eat of just Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Decided to support our local restaurant after seeing a picture of several specials they were offering which looked delicious. Wrong, the food was unacceptable!!! Had there salt and pepper pork chops, salad, french fries, sunny side egg on rice with a drink for $9.25. We were torn between 2 stars or 3 stars, not because the food isn't great, but this is the second time we've been to the Royal Palace Restaurant where a customer complained of having a cockroach in their food. The first time was a takeout order (in 2010). The customer came stomping into the restaurant demanding her money back as her order had a cockroach in it. Without the evidence in hand, the manager would not return her money. This past Sunday (05/08/2011) while dining there, a customer stood up from her table (shared with a male companion) and together they walked out of the place, with her complaining (loudly) of finding a cockroach in her fried rice. A patron, sitting next to us, got up and went over to the serving tray containing the fried rice, and with the use of the serving spoon, searched through the rice looking for evidence of anything other than edible ingredients. As far as we know, nothing out of the ordinary was found, but he did ask the staff to replace the fried rice being served. Of course they didn't. We've always enjoyed eating at the Royal Palace as their cake noodles can't be beat. I particularly like the way they make their fried chicken. It always has a nice crispy skin, yet is tender and moist inside. They cut the chicken up into small pieces so it's easy to load ones plate up and enjoy. Most everything they prepare is tasty and a real bargain ($9.95 per person) if you can make it to the buffet (10:30 AM to 2:00 PM). As in the earlier incident, we didn't actually see (or find) any cockroach ourselves, but when someone mentions it, ones appetite is severely curbed. read more

It's been a while since we came here. As always, knowing that when you go there early for lunch, expect to see some food from last night. You just have to be choosy which to eat. As I started eating my gindoi (round dessert coated with sesame seeds with black sugar inside) and almost half way through it, I noticed something brown (same size as sesame). It's a TINY BUG!!!!!! (I uploaded the actual picture on the photo share "tiny bug on my gindoi"). I showed it to the owner/manager. He took it to the counter to inspect it and I guess to make sure it's really real. He came back to our table. Instead of telling me that they'll be more careful, he tells me "you know, it probably came from the sack of sesame seeds becoz there's plenty inside the big bag" (I don't know if he meant more of that bugs or more sesame seeds inside..lol). I can't say this place makes the best Chinese food I've ever had, but it's the best Chinese buffet I have been to. They have a decent selection of food and all of it is pretty good. I love the cake noodles, though they have the tendency to get really hard, so you gotta look for the ones that are still a little soft in the middle. Their ginger chicken is also really good - their sauce is perfect. They also have chicken with green beans and beef broccoli. For dessert, their taro tapioca is awesome. Sorry, late review. Had my wife's Half Century Celebration here. Originally reserved five tables. That morning kids called me and told me to increase to eight. When I called them, they said no more room. Maybe seven tables. Okay. I will take what I can knowing not everybody will show up. Kids get there before us, gives them a hard time because only seven tables. I tell them no worries. Poor staff trying so hard to accommodate eight tables. And they were stressing. I kept telling them no need but they said they'll work on it. We had the buffet, and all was taken care of. For a Buffet style meal, our guests were happy. Praises went to the Ginger Chicken, Kau Yuk, Crispy cake noodles, and black bean clams. All followed close with the salt/pepper shrimp, fruits and soft serve ice cream. As predicted, not everyone came and we didn't need those extra tables. Regardless of all that stress that I fully apologize for. They only charged me for the people that came, applied all the senior and keiki discount. Gave me an additional discount, and presented my wife with a golden koi pudding made with mango. The discounts and pudding was a surprise to me as after all that problems my guest made. From loose balloons, to loose kids. I left a big tip. No explanation was needed. I really wish I had looked at the reviews before I came. I ordered and paid $39.00 online so I could run in. It is a super hot binge watching Netflix pajama kind of day and Chinese food seemed necessary. I showed up at the restaurant 30 minutes after I put in the order. The staff said they never received my order. I showed them my credit card charge with their name on it. They said they didn't get it. I reordered and had to pay again. I was told to contact my credit card company about the charge because they didn't do it even though it had their restaurant name on the charge. Somehow, the new charge came out to $45.00. I asked but was told they didn't know. Then, I sat there in my Sunday binge watching pj's for 45 minutes waiting for my food. 45 minutes...I was uncomfortable so it felt like a long 45 minutes. The staff smiled my way occasionally. Finally, I told the lady I was just going to go and I wanted a refund. She said she would be back and 5 minutes later my warmish food appeared. The food got maybe a 2 star rating. It was super bland aside from a burnt taste to it and not hot. No seasoning. Fried rice was basically white rice. Very little meat and veggies in it. The service was cordial but very slow and they charged me a special haole fee they hadn't charged when I ordered online. Despite this place being 5 minutes from my house I will not be returning. The food was kept warm in stainless steel pans on a cafeteria-like cart right in the center of the restaurant. Hubby and I wanted to give this place a chance. Usually we don't ignore the Yelp Stars/ Reviews... but idk why we decided to proceed with this Buffet even though we had our fair warning LOL. Walked in & it was just like a time warp of the Buffets in the 90's, only 2 hot tables with the trays where the "buffet" is supposed to be. But as we looked into the selections, there's hardly any food. Now, I thought this was a buffettttt! Where is all the food at?!? LMAO, so aunty comes along and asks us what we would like to eat.. My family has been coming to this small Chinese restaurant for years to order take out or hold family dinners as it's in a convenient location. We don't go too often anymore as my family has found better places that they'll actually travel further for. However, on the occasions that my mother doesn't feel like cooking this is still the place they'll go for a quick take out dinner. Tonight was the first time we tried out their take out special which consists of your choice of rice, fried rice, or chow fun and 2 or 3 choices from the buffet line. We ordered three plates which the waitress helped pack up for us. I wasn't expecting the waitress to give such generous portions when she was loading up our plates. The entree choices actually spilled over the little dents in the take-out container :) At around $8 a plate it was a pretty decent size meal, enough to feed two people! Or course the food itself isn't anything amazing, but it's not terrible either. My favorite from what we picked would have to be the steamed fish with ginger and soy sauce. We are big Lemon Chicken fans and they have the best Lemon Chicken I've had on Oahu so far. I've had Lemon Chicken from a few restaurants in Chinatown, but they just dont stack up to Royal Palace. Our to go order each time... -Lemon Chicken -Seafood Combination -Shrimp Cake Noodles -Sometimes Mongolian Beef -Two bowls of rice. We never do finish everything, but I like having a variety. This is the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to in my ENTIRE life (I'm Chinese by the way). The char siu is made fresh every day, the ginger bass is so soft and tasty, and the lobster has so much sea flavor that I forgot I was in Hawaii. Every menu item has a sauce that is just SO good that you put it over rice and down the whole thing. Honestly... even the pickled vegetables had a sauce to die for. Now that I go to Royal Palace now, I must say it was much better back in the day. Somehow they're food tastes a bit worse than my last visit in a few months or years. It is really big and spacey, the hygiene this restaurant is just terrible. The noise level is okay, and I like the idea that there's a buffet. My family used to come here for celebrations all the time. But now that we know of Wah Kung, we go there now. read more
