Back in the day I visited Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill at least once or twice a month. I really liked their street tacos that come with chicken, steak or carnitas, but would occasionally try some of their other offerings. Then they completely revamped their menu to emphasize a full array of seafood offerings. I must admit, I was no longer a fan. Not only did I not like the taste of the few seafood items I tried, but it seemed like the price point rose significantly. I hadn't been back for many months, but while doing a Yelp search of local restaurants I stumbled onto Mike H.'s review that mentioned the Chicken Tortilla Soup and was immediately drawn in. I have a weakness for a nice spicy chicken tortilla soup and this is one of the better ones I've tasted. I ordered a bowl of it to go for three dollars and change and then made a few stops on the way home. It was still hot when I opened the to go container. There were slices of fresh avocado on top that kept their texture and even a slice of lime. I discovered, with the first spoonful, that there was a cheesy component to the soup. It made for messy eating but it was quite tasty. There were large white chunks of chicken, a LOT of chicken, mexican rice, tortilla strips, and veggies. Yummy! The cashier who took my order asked if I wanted flour tortillas to go with it, but I asked for corn tortillas instead as I usually prefer them. The soup was fabulous, but I was not a fan of the tortillas. I took one bite and then threw the rest away. I'd definitely come back to try the soup, and I did notice that they do still have the street tacos on the menu so I may even come back for them. I will not, however, be tempted by any of their seafood fare. read more

I've probably walked/drove past Rubio's a thousand times on my way to Panda Express and have never thought to try it out. Wasn't till I heard they were giving back to the community and helping kids attend camp. Perfect excuse! Walked in and was immediately greeted with smiles (there's a ton of workers on staff) I ordered the California bowl with seared shrimp. I was told the green sauce goes better with the meal vs. the red so I trusted the employees advice and got green.....I should have got red! Lol Bowl came out hot and fresh. The green sauce was ok....but I opted for the salsa bar and got up twice for their picante sauce....SO good! Only complaint is I felt the black beans were too watery nothing a strainer can't fix though! I will be returning, their menu is pretty extensive I'd like to try more of it. Washed my meal down with a cold corona. I'll have to drag my other half here next time. Definitely a healthier choice. -Minus the beer calories ;) read more

How could I have missed Rubio's all these years? The salmon burrito was by far the best fish burrito to ever enter my mouth. Lime and chili sauce, fresh cabbage, guacamole...sigh. We used to go here about once a month. Nowadays, we visit about twice a year. I'm a member of their e-mail club so I'll receive some offers from them every other month or so. When I see something that I want to try, then I'll go there. These items are usually only available for a limited time. I'm yet to try one of these limited edition items which were really good. The old standby item that I'll order are their hand battered fish tacos. I like it's crispy taste. There is cabbage, salsa, and a white sauce inside the corn tortilla. Add some lime juice, and the taste of these fish tacos is enough to satisfy me. The food is affordable and always comes out quick, and I've never had troubles with the staff. I actually used to like Rubio's. This was delivery. Never again. It wasn't fresh. The seafood smell was awful. It took over an hour and a half for delivery so I am sure that had something to do with it. It smelled unclean. My memory holds on and I won't go back. What was an "okay for fast food" became a "never again" disgusted. I can't eat food that smells like dirty kitchen. Seafood is just too much of a gamble. I hope they clean up. Just gross. read more

We have been coming to this Rubio's for years even during the lockdown we would order to go and eat in the car. We came in today and got our usual the chopped salad except I ordered the mahi mahi fir the first time and we ended up waiting 20 minutes for our order. We asked for 2 red salsas and 2 green we got 4 red! The salads are the same price but about 1/2 the size! To top it off my fish was cold! We've decided it's time to find another place. read more

The shrimps tacos are amazing! I really enjoy seafood and tend to order shrimp tacos often, these are definitely some of the best I've ever tasted. The sauce is great and the shrimp are fresh. The side of pinto beans isn't the most flavorful, but the tacos more than make up for it. read more

Wow Bakersfield, another surprisingly great discovery! Great spot for lunch. Ordered the MANGO HABERNERO MAHI MAHI tacos, amazingly scrumptious especially with the mango. The guacamole in the STEAK BURRITO added so much flavor to the steak. Both were great choices. Can't forget their Salsa bar! Mild, picante, roasted Chipotle, and spicy Chile. I visited this Rubio's on the long drive back from Vegas to Sacramento. We happened to come on a Tuesday, meaning it was Taco Tuesday! The original fish tacos and the sesame soy tacos were on sale for $1.50. This location seems to be very generous with the portions. The fish was freshly fried and both types of tacos were really tasty. I also ordered the shrimp burrito (about $7). There was shrimp in every bite and the tortilla was nicely grilled so that it had a little crispiness to it. All of the food came out hot and the portions were very fair. The salsa bar was fully stocked and the service was very friendly. This is one of then best Rubio's experiences that I have had. Notes: -Plenty of parking. You fell down today Rubios. We went in, took the time to order and waited 25 minutes for our food. To go. Then, you served it to someone else waiting at a table with a similar name. Equals - me being pissed as I now have to go elsewhere. I do not have another 25 min to wait while you refire. And do not try to lie to all seeing customers saying it will be right out, that you are short staffed and the kitchen is simply backed up. I watched the poor guy dining in return our meals and for some reason the eatery seemed to wonder why we did not want the food that had been sitting on his table for who knows how long. I'm usually a fan of fish tacos and rarely have a bad one, except here. They were pretty much awful. They were soggy and salty. I was hoping it was an off day, and tried a few times more. Nope, consistently bad. But, it's just the fish tacos. The chicken, shrimp, carne tacos are all ok. Not the best, but enjoyable. I am biased. We live in Bakersfield. Competition is tough in the taco circuit. FYI-Their chicken quesadilla is pretty awesome. Big chunks of chicken, at least three kinds of cheese. It's slightly sweet yet savory. I want to give them two stars but I don't know if the price deserve two stars. I kinda like Rubios food but holy hot diggiity dayum its expensive!! I just think that if I am gonna spend $30 for two people to eat I can go to a sit down restaurant where someone takes my order and clears my plate. The food is good but its not $15 a person good. I think I paid $11 for a salad but I didn't see the price on the menu so I'm not really even sure. I wanted a side of chips and the woman told me they weren't free with my $11 salad. The salad was okay- I would have paid $6 for it and had no complaints. The lettuce was very wet. Not wet with dressing wet with water. It was soggy. I think if price was the same level as the food and the quick-service atmosphere I would likely be leaving a 5 star review but its just too much money for what I feel I got. read more

Place an online order today for 11:30AM pickup from this location. I walked in around 11:25 along with other customers to the online pick up counter. The caucasian lady with long blonde hair at the counter doesnt say anything to anyone and then just stops and looks at me, like what do I want. No greeting or hello. I told her that I have an online pickup order for 11:30. She doesn't say anything. Mind you she only asked me, not the other customers. Then when orders come out she calls out customer names. Then when my order comes out she places it on the shelf and walks off. I knew I was being discriminated against since I was the only colored person in the restaurant. Terrible service and will never go back! I can spend my money elsewhere. Rubios, you need to work on training your staff on customer service and greetings when paying customers come in. And not treat people differently due to the color of their skin. I work hard for my money and came in to get lunch for me and my family. But never again!!! I can spend my money else where. read more

Fish Tacos and Burritos are 3 stars. They are ok, nothing special. I tell you what is special is their new Chicken Tortilla Soup! The soup is fantastic. chunks of chicken, avacado, tortilla strips, mexican rice, and cilantro. Add a squeeze of lime or lemon juice, and that soup can be compared to any of the best mexican restaurants in town. I just hope the soup is not a seasonal item, because it is that good. read more
