Today was the first time I tried Rubios. Truly the food was good but the service was great. Jocelyn was so helpful when making a selection. I would come back only because of the service Jocelyn gave, rubios is lucky to have her as a devoted employee. She demonstrated keeping the clients best interest in mind and answered all over questions. She went above and beyond by recommending a plate she thought I would like after a few discovery questions. read more

I love this place so much more now after the renovation. It looks newer and "hipper." The way it's set up makes it easier to get in queue and wait for your food. This is my go to place for Taco Tuesday even though the prices went up a little. $1.75 for the regular fish taco and $2.00 for the taco especial (with guac). In the past, they didn't even have a deal for the especial so it's nice that they do now. My recommendation is to move the sauce bar so you can access it from two sides.That place gets crowded very easily, especially when people are trying to access the drink fountain too. read more

I've been a Rubio's fan for years, but have never felt compelled to write a Yelp review. Swung by today to grab my favorite California burrito and was super impressed with my experience and quality of the food and service. Fernando was super friendly and immediately made everyone feel welcome and it was clear he was having a good time himself. Tried the original fish tacos for the first time last weekend. I have to say that I liked them. The batter was crispy not overly oily. Not too impressive cold water lobster special. A lot of women eating, very few men. Somehow a three dollar coupon got me a $1.50 discount. Hard to read the tiny price on the special placard when in throes of ordering. The lady management type told me the lobster would be around for another month, but the website describes it as going til the end of May. It looks like she wanted to be somewhere else. My best friend in the whole world and her sister took me here today for taco Tuesday. Not sure if the prices went up or not but the fish tacos are $1.50 and they are amazingly delicious!! I like these tacos because they don't use the small tortilla they use the regular size one. WOO HOO!!! that's my kinda size. So in conclusion I was having a crappy day, my head, shoulder and stomach was hurting. Its been one of those months & these fish tacos just perked me right up. Maybe its because I haven't been able to eat well, and this food was absolutely amazing. Even tho its expensive for me its still worth the money and that is the only reason why I gave this place 4 stars because I wish it was cheaper and WISH they offered some FREE chips in salsa. Why is it that Rubios blackened Mahi-Mahi is not what I recall it to be? This one in particular was a little too salty. But safe to say it's not entirely the individual fault of this Rubios, the food is the same in all Rubios. On a good note, I like how the service works. Take your order, call your name and even the shift supervisor makes a valiant effort on making good rapport. It even felt like he waited for me to finish my meal and as I was getting up he respectfully asks to do it for me instead. Thank you shift supervisor Leno. P.S. I've recently moved to Newport Beach from San Diego. I haven't found fish tacos as great as Rubio's in several months. So when I was running errands in Costa Mesa, I was so thrilled to see this location. Great, friendly service; easy parking; and the tacos I crave! Normally like to leave good reviews but this Rubio's left us disappointed! I ordered a salad with dressing on the side. When I poured the dressing on my salad, there was a big mysterious hard piece of something in It. I took It up and the waiter and cook and they didn't know what it was! The manager came out and said he thinks it's chipotle skin. Did not give me a new salad let alone a new dressing? Also, Rubio's is normally so fresh. Our food was not up to the usual! When I stepped foot into Rubio's, I saw that there was a promotion going on for the Serrano Mahi-Mahi taco/burrito, so I thought I'd give it a try. My first thought for Mahi-Mahi was that I didn't think that it would taste all that great in either a fish taco or burrito, but when I had Rubio's for lunch, it proved me wrong. The fish was flaky, yet crisp, and the tortilla from the burrito itself wasn't hard and chewy like you were about to chew non-sweetened bubble gum. Oh, and the rice was also up to my expectations. :) The tortilla chips (on the side) were crisp and hot, just like what you would find in a cantina such as Acapulco or any other "authentic" Mexican restaurant. The service at such establishment was just AWESOME. Overall, what I got was a bit up there in price, like Chipotle and Chronic Tacos, but don't get me wrong, I love both Rubio's and Chronic Tacos, but if I had to pick either one, I'd still go with Chronic Tacos. :) read more

I liked their "original" fish tacos! This is a huge accomplishment for one reason: I don't like seafood. At all. But there is enough breading (and it's not oily, like Trina D. mentions) and seasoning to actually make this palatable for someone who doesn't like the fishiness or the texture of fish. Plus, you're not going to find many "fast & fresh" chains that sell alcohol. Their guacamole is also stellar! Well-designed location - clean, stocked - and great food! Getting takeout was super fast, but the food didn't suffer because of it. Would highly recommend the grilled veggie salad w/blackened mahi mahi and extra veggies. Staff is very young, but so courteous and professional - hats off to you, manager, for finding these kids. For being a fast food Mexican chain this is one of the best alternative to those 24 hour Mexican joint and Wahoos Fish Taco. Their salsa tasted really fresh and really good & also their chips were fresh, crunchy and delicious. I can tell you other chains gives you a bigger burrito but the size of their burrito was just right. I had the following food today. Fish Burrito 4/5 pretty decent but I think they need to add more batterd fish. Chicken Especial Burrito 4/5 good taste with rice beans and guacamole. Chicken Nachos 3.5/5 fresh crunchy chips not stale but kinda skimpy with their chicken, beans and cheese. These nachos are way better than El Torito. Service 4/5 Being busy as it is for lunch where near by employees from local business and companies came for lunch I got my food quick. Salsa 4/5 nice varieties of salsa, you will be in salsa heaven. Also on Tuesday after 2:30pm I think they got one of the best fish tacos I've ever had for dirt cheap. We ordered for the family 4 dishes only 3 got delivered. When we called back the person at Rubio's didn't even apologize neither tried to make it right and said was delivery service. So the DoorDasher took the burrito out and ate it... the representative then said she prepared the order and is sure it was in there....we are making this up... for what reason... get an idea of customer service never order there again. read more

Five stars for their employee Will in Costa Mesa! - though the food was good too. I had a Veggie burrito, chips and guacamole. The guacamole was really good. I stayed to eat and was just impressed with hearing Will in the background the whole time, doing nothing but having a forward presence, a quick, great smile and providing each customer with individual, sincere attention. I just ordered The Shrimp California Bowl with quinoa and the portion size is really small....as always. 5 shrimps and a small amount of quinoa was mixed in with brown rice and barely any black beans. Really? What was the $1 extra up charge all about then? Very poor execution of the food. No surprise that I just ate and am still starving. I'm a big Rubios guy. Something about their chicken, its just almost always perfect. Juicy, tender, flavorful.....yum! This place doesn't recreate the wheel or anything but for any kind of chicken burritos or tacos, they are towards the top of my rankings for quick Mexican food. I also grab the occasional fish taco which are usually great and even better in a flour tortilla than the corn ones. Their salsa could be better and their chips are usually over-fried and all stuck together but other than that, 2 thumbs up. read more

Rubio's are all the same, well at least all the ones I have eaten at. It is pretty basic fast Mexican style food, just a smidge more expensive here. The food isn't bad and I rather enjoy their fish tacos, but it just isn't worth what they charge. Much like the Honda Civic, Rubio's food has increased in price much past it's worth due to growing popularity. Hit it up on a taco Tuesday or whenever else they offer a special and enjoy. However looks like it was not manager at all , on line we were around 8 or 10 people and only one register working. That is very disappointing, when a FAST food place is getting this busy all registers must be working and should be some one direction the people and making sure line moves, no one likes to be waiting for food specially if we are hungry, I asked cashier if you guys were short handed and she says NO so I asked were is the manager, she says on the back. I tolde her, the manager supposed to be here using the register no washing dishes, I'm in the food industry and I strongly believe someone needs to take seriously this comment. I saw 7 people working and only one reagister. That is no the way to make business. Are you guys are here just for certain time make the check and go or to make sure you guys meet guests expectations and make the businesses grow. Not sure if I will come back to this particular Location. Also when the manager came out i had a conversation with him, one of the excuses He gave me was we don't use the second register because if we go faster we don't have to much prepared on the back. On my way to Newport Beach we pulled over and ate here. As a Mexican I'm not a big fan of these types of restaurants. Why? Well When I want tacos, I want real authentic tacos! Knowing these tacos would most likely come with lettuce etc i ordered them plain. I figured since they are not going to be loading my taco with lettuce they will stuff it with more carne asada right? Wrong! I still got the insufficient amount of grilled steak I knew I would get. Although they lacked carne asada, my tacos didn't lack taste. Got Togo here on vacation because it was literally less than a mile from our hotel. The lady helping us at the register was very nice and friendly. We got two burritos and chips and Guac and I got the California bowl with NO chipotle sauce, due to allergies. The lady repeated everything back correctly . We got salsas from the salsa bar which is one of my favorite things about the franchise. And our food was out very quickly. I should have checked our bags that was my fault, but I was tired and it was already 8:40. We went back to our hotel and I opened my tasty looking bowl and chipotle dressing was one half of it. Every Rubio's location I've been to never disappointed me until today at this Costa Mesa location. Rubio's is my go-to spot for tacos on Tuesdays. The $2 Fish Taco Especial loaded with guac and cheese is an insane deal for insanely good fish tacos. I was super disappointed to see there was about half the amount of fish a tiny smear of guac and little to no cheese and a mountain of cabbage, its understandable if this happens on one taco but it was all 3, a huge let down. 1 star is for Fabiola who was super nice and friendly, other star is because this location is huge compared to others there's a ton of seating. Maybe should stop advertising the fish taco special if they can't afford to do it the right way like every single other Rubio's locations. read more

I was attracted to this restaurant because of their $1.25 fish taco Tuesday! Best fish taco deal I have seen! I had 3 of the fish tacos, and one chicken taco. Overall pretty tasty! Yumm!! They had a nice salsa bar with four salsas, big lime wedges, cilantro/onion & marinated jalapeño. I am a fish taco connoisseur so I am very critical of them. The strengths were: great crispy breading, light flaky fish, tasty sauce, & yumminess from the salsa bar to enhance the flavor. And you best be using lots of lime! Ay yi yi!!!!!! The downfalls: cabbage wasn't great, only 1 tortilla (I prefer the authentic way of serving it with 2 so you can divide the ingredients into the tortillas & get more bang for your buck!!!), tortillas weren't horrible but not great...kinda chewy. I was impressed with how many ingredients were on the chicken taco: guacamole, cheese, lettuce, chipotle sauce, etc! And the meat was tender! I wouldn't call this an authentic taco by any means, but still a tasty one. It is rare that you find a chain restaurant that voluntarily puts guacamole on your taco without charging an arm and a leg! So that gets it major bonus points. I didn't try them but Rubios have lobster tacos. I'll try them next time, and so should you! read more

Fantastic customer service. The Manager Fernando is excellent: very positive, checked up on me 3 times and even brought out water for my dog AND wouldn't even accept a tip. Food is good, customer service (in the evenings) went down the drain.This used to be my go to spot, I would call orders about twice a week for a few years. It seems like something happened over the last year though. I was left on hold for close to 20mins while I was driving, pulled up and see no one in line and the cashier not doing anything. Or they just don't answer the phone, a different time I called for 30 mins straight (back to back calling) and when they finally answer at 8:50pm they told me the kitchen was closed and I would need to go to another Rubios in Irvine if I wanted food.
