I cannot say enough about how much I love this place, and I couldn't disagree more with the other reviews. Having eaten there at least 10 times for both lunch and dinner, it has become my "go-to" place for breakfast/brunch on the weekends. Before today I thought the crabcake breakfast was my fave, and that it couldn't get any better. The crabcake is ALL crab! It's fantastically seasoned and I eat it in its entirety before even tasting the creamy scrambled eggs, grits and hearty whole grain toast. Awesome! I also truly enjoyed the Migas (scrambled eggs with a mexican flair), but today I went a different route and chose the BBQ shrimp and grits. I worried the entire time until it came that I might regret my choice as I love the crabcake so much.... but WOW!! The flavor was outstanding! I could hardly get enough. The sauce was perfection, intense with worcestershire and rosemary! I have a NEW favorite! This place is awesome - the environment is quaint and the staff is super friendly. Today I even purchased two huge chocolate chip cookies to go because I saw them come out fresh from the kitchen and couldn't resist. I was in town visiting family for the Thanksgiving Holidays and wanted to try something new. I am so glad I did. The Ruby Slipper is a very cozy and inviting place with a warm welcoming staff. The food is very good. AS FAR AS THE OTHER REVIEWERS THAT WERE A BIT OF NEGATIVE NANCY, I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOU. If the place draws a crowd, they are obviously doing a pretty good job. This is in response to a recent review. The reviewer mentioned that a server's girlfriend received faster service than she did, and that the server actually ignored the reviewer in lieu of his girlfriend. I am the girlfriend, and these complaints are baseless. My boyfriend (the server) and I had made plans to eat lunch together, but he was then called in to help with the lunch shift, so he suggested that I eat at Ruby Slipper to make up for our lunch date. By the time I got there, he was no longer needed - still wearing his Ruby Slipper staff shirt, but not on the clock. Shortly after I arrived, in fact, he changed out of his staff shirt. This should have been indicator #1 to the reviewer that her initial perception of the server as negligent was misplaced. I did indeed bring my laptop, as Ruby Slipper is a cafe and offers free wifi, and I was expecting to be dining alone (boyfriend supposed to be working). Restaurants that do not want their patrons to use wifi while dining would not offer free wifi. I am sensitive to taking up a table when a restaurant is busy, but that was not the case on this day. There were many tables available, including four-seat tables. My boyfriend and I sat at a four-seat table; the patron and her friend were seated at an adjacent four-seat table. This was opportunity #2 for the reviewer to revise her initial perception of the server, who was at this point eating lunch with me and obviously not working. Also, for the record, I was drinking an iced tea. Not "nursing" a "latte." My iced tea was served in a clear glass and thus should have been obvious to the patron, who, again, was sitting at the adjacent table and has made no bones about how closely she was observing me, my behavior, the speed with which I drank things, and my interactions with my boyfriend. Unfortunately the patron seems more interested in embellishing a complaint than reporting the facts of her experience. This experience at Ruby Slipper was my first time dining there, and it was very nice indeed, although it is upsetting to know that someone was watching me resentfully while I enjoyed my rich and flavorful shrimp and grits (love the rosemary in there) and took juicy bites of my boyfriend's mountainous hamburger. The food came out quickly; our waitress was sweet and efficient. I would hate for anyone to think that the service here is problematic based on this reviewer's misconception that my boyfriend was ignoring her to provide service to someone else - in fact, he was no longer on the clock and was merely greeting me at the door. read more

A delicious destination, but be prepared to wait if you don't show up early on the weekends. I love the crab cake breakfast, while the hubs usually goes with the huevos. And the grits!! Amazing creamy delicious. They have both booster seats and highchairs (and a kids menu) for the little brats - mine got the french toast which he gobbled down before proceeding to ruin other people's brunch by screaming with joy from the sheer deliciousness of it all. I visited this restaurant for the first time this Saturday. I was on a quick vacation with my family. Let me begin by saying that the food was great and the service was outstanding!!! We ordered breakfast. The portions were generous and seasoned to perfection! I can't say enough nice things about the staff. Everyone was nice and greeted you with a smile. But Joe, the manager, was a true gem. He was friendly and welcoming. He checked on us regularly, and made us feel right at home. We came as customers, but left feeling like family. Been going to Ruby Slipper in Mid City for the past year and while I have gone though most of the menu, everything that I have gotten has been of the best quality. I have never had a bad meal. The best part about the place is the entire staff seems generally happy that you are there and tries to make your experience better. It is refreshing to go to a place where the employees actually care that you are in the restaurant instead of just waiting for their shift to end. I mostly go on weekend mornings and while there is a wait most mornings, the food and customer service is ALWAYS worth the wait. Visited this spot on Tuesday for breakfast/brunch with my roommate and girlfriend. We were seated pretty quickly, but our server was extremely slow! She seemed preoccupied with her other tables much more than she was with ours. My roommate, girlfriend and I started with mimosas which were amazing! We ordered our food and their food came out in a timely fashion, but unfortunately I was left hungry without a plate. As stated before, our server was slow and preoccupied, she didn't check back on us until my friends were basically done eating. Upon her coming up to the table she then asks me where my food is as if I was preparing it myself. Smh...well I waited another 15 minutes for my food to come and asked if it could be comp'd since I waited so long. She had a slight attitude, but management took care of it. I would give this place a higher rating if I had been there more than once and could have verified that the great experience I had there. If you're like and you're a Yankee who loves Southern food, you know how hard it is to get up in the North. Whatever you do, don't take a Southern friend or relative from the South to your favorite barbecue joint in New York or Vermont or Pennsylvania--you're likely to get an earful, even if the restaurant in question is a good one. They're not going to take you seriously. That being said, this rule applies double for Louisiana, where food and cooking is a particular passion. Even beer-swilling, brawling brutes there have a taste for the finer things in life. New Orleans manages to achieve quality without pretension, a noticeably rare skill. That being said, when you go to New Orleans or anywhere else, look for the places the locals frequent. I found the Ruby Slipper on Magazine Street after several recommendations. It has a reputation as a breakfast place, but I'm more of a lunch guy, and after helpings of fried green tomatoes and sweet potato fries, my opinion of southern food changed forever. There is, of course, a difference between southern and cajun; The Ruby Slipper does both. The main course was three very nice sandwiches, all of which were split up between myself, my girlfriend and my brother, all of whom were pleased, all of which ingeniously blended home cookin' with quality food. The burger was the ultimate rarity today--handmade out of fresh ground beef. All around, an enjoyable meal. Lovers of local cuisine (depending on how broadly you interpret the word "local") will find what they're looking for, and that person everyone knows who can't eat anything that isn't white bread or processed food will...well, there's a McDonald's down the street. read more

Mid-City Ruby Slipper is the best. One morning I had breakfast at the Ruby Slipper in the CBD, and at the original mid-city location the next. It was no contest. Breakfast at the Mid-City location was beautifully cooked, wonderfully flavored, and served hot--must be great cooks in the kitchen. I never post anything, but it was that BAD. DON'T GO! I've been to the Ruby Slipper three times now, and I won't ever go back!!! Nothing special the first couple of times either. My Dad was in town for Thanksgiving, and he wanted to get brunch. I thought we would try it again, because everybody raves about it. I made a reservation through the app. When we arrived, we only had to wait a couple minutes which was great. It took 37 minutes to get our food. I initially ordered the Crouque Madame, but they were out of ham at 11:00am. How are you out of ham if you're a brunch place? My Dad ordered a $13 shrimp omelette. It was overcooked and had barely anything it. I ended up getting a $11 turkey Reuben, which was a huge mistake. It was sooooo dry. When I asked the waitress for thousand Island dressing, she didn't seem to know what I was talking about, and said they didn't have any. A Reuben with no thousand Island dressing? I told her it was very dry and asked if she could bring me something to add to it. It was seriously terrible. She had who I assume was the Manager bring me extra coleslaw and a side of mayo. They charged me $.50 for mayo, which I didn't even use because you don't put that on a Ruben. The only thing that was edible was the biscuit. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. They weren't even friendly. So basically they get 1* for a biscuit, and because I can't give a zero! I'm disappointed in myself for not speaking with the Manager, but my Dad was visiting and I didn't want to make a big deal about it. Was looking to go somewhere different and non-touristy for breakfast on a Saturday morning and decided on Ruby Slipper Cafe. There was a bit of a wait at 9:30 but it went by quickly and my friend was able to get coffee for the wait while we sat outside and passed the time on a beautiful morning. As we were seated I was able to observe what others were dining on and everything looked fabulous! I ordered a special, Eggs Cochon (a large biscuit topped with pulled pork, 2 poached eggs, hollandaise and fresh chives) and a "double" mimosa. My food was great but I would have been happier with a little more hollandaise on top, there was only about a tablespoon (if that much) of the decadent sauce sitting on top of each egg. Our server was very pleasant and prompt and there was no problem when my non-meat eating friend wanted to substitute spinach for the bacon (an abomination!) on her egg order. Overall, I was happy with everything but found 10 bucks for one mimosa served in a wine glass to be kinda steep. Oh, well, I'll know that for next time when I try the pancakes. read more

We first tried the Canal St location but the wait was extremely long and wound up at the S Broad location and really liked the parking lot availability. Waited maybe 15 to 20 minutes and enjoyed the outside walk up window bar. We got two morning margaritas which were very good. Ordered the two specials of the day, the eggs Benedict with brisket and the salted caramel cheesecake stuffed French toast. Both were delicious, really enjoyed the French toast. This place is cute. Very cute. The staff is efficient and friendly. The first time I dined here, it was just okay, so I really wanted to give it another try. We went for brunch on a Sunday, and were pleased that the wait wasn't long. I got a $10 double mimosa and waited happily in the sun. So, we ordered and while we were waiting, my partner, who was facing the service window, quietly pointed out that there was a roach crawling along the wall towards a yummy egg dish, that had already been sitting there for a good five minutes. Monsieur le roach then got delivered to a table, where the waiting diner was sufficiently horrified upon his arrival. The server whisked the dish away, and eventually brought out something else. Now, I live in NOLA, so I do understand that these little buggers really can show up anywhere, but the order did sit in that window long enough for us to witness a little show. Our drinks were great, but, again, the food was disappointing. My partner had the BBQ shrimp and grits. The shrimp were teeny and the dish was quite bland. Her biscuit was tasty. I, stupidly, ordered a breakfast sandwich and potatoes. The sandwich was just dull. It was barely warm, and the sausage tasted, well again, bland. I loved the potatoes, but for $2.50, all I got was a tiny, tiny bowl, that left me wanting more. Again, the place has a cute look, a great location, good but expensive drinks, and a nice staff. We are probably the easiest to please gals in the city, and the food here is just not memorable. I didn't hate it, but will not return.
