We chose to reserve the table at this restaurant for our wedding anniversary dinner. I was really excited by the photos of ambience and menu i saw online. I wish i could say i was totally satisfied with the choice i made though. We ordered crispy rock sushi and chicken fried rice which was fairly good. But the cocktails were huge disappointment. I ordered passionfruit project which tasted awfully bitter right after couple of sips. The service at out table was not great experience either. He did not care to ask whether the food and drinks came out okay. After we finished our food we were offered the check instead of dessert menu. We had a wonderful early Valentines Day dinner here. It was our first time dining at RUKA. The ambiance was one of my favorite parts of our meal and evening. There was so much detail from the mural on the wall to the colorful ceiling. Bae and I ordered several dishes to share and the plating of each was next level beautiful, like a work of art (see pics). This place is expensive yet absolutely delicious. Strongly recommend a reservation. It is a dark atmosphere and the music is pretty loud, but they had some amazing music, my fiancé and I were both talking about the great music selection during dinner. The only issue was the music was way too loud, I wish it were just a tad softer so you can actually enjoy and hear conversation. We had a group of 4 and no one could hear one another :( The drinks are all delicious and presented so beautifully you will want to instagram it ;) All the food was incredible and exceeded expectations above and beyond. This is an imaginative Asian fusion themed restaurant with primarily Japanese inspired food but also Chinese and Korean influences. The food here was great! TL:DR this place is great - order one of everything. I got a last minute reservation while in town and my only regret is that we didn't order more. We ordered plenty, but there was so much more we wanted to try on the menu. We read a few reviews to see what others had enjoyed, and decided on the King Tupac and Crispy Rock Shrimp rolls, curry fried rice, chao shou pork wontons, wok charred scallion roti, and the lobster ceviche. The only thing I would probably skip is the lobster ceviche. It was good, but the (really delicious) sauce overpowered the dish and you couldn't really taste the lobster. The rolls were both interesting in flavor combination but not hard to eat. The scallion roti was perfection. I would have never thought of combining a scallion pancake with a feta sauce - or melting feta down to begin with...but it worked. And for dessert - the big fish. Duh. Yes, it's instagram worthy...and maybe that's why many get it...but it was DELICIOUS. the spice was a nice contrast to the sweet, and many textures, so each delicious bite was different. All three of us got the maracuya (i think) to drink, kind of like a passion fruit mule. I would definitely get that again.... And the service was impeccable. I think it was hovering around 10 degrees out, and the moment we walked in, we were welcomed and felt at home. Our server made great suggestions and was a delight. We lingered a bit because the room is just gorgeous (and who was going to rush into the freezing temps!) Looking forward to returning when I'm back in Boston in the spring. read more

I heard about this place from a friend and decided to try it. The decors, colors and vibe of the place is awesome! The food did not disappoint. I opted for the sushi instead of tapa dishes and I was blown away! I got the spicy salmon blt and the RUKA spicy tuna roll. Both were delicious but the BLT was amazing. They serve it with a spicy ponzu sauce that added just enough kick to the sushi. Ugh, I was expecting an excellent experience and was disappointed. The price is so high and the portions so small. Seating was unnecessarily crowded. The kitchen staff was having a hitting match in front of me. I was by myself so was seated at the bar. The bar was completely open but they sat me right next to a couple. Then another person by herself came in and they sat her right next to me. It was so tight I had to try not to touch the people next to me. I would not mind tight quarters on a busy night but this was a Monday at 6:30pm and the place was at 50% occupancy. The waitress was not nice at all. Just an "order and get out of here" kind of attitude. I was there for a total of thirty minutes so it wasn't like I was overstaying at my bar seat. I was facing the kitchen and two of the staff members we hitting each other like children would. That is unusual for a high-end restaurant. I paid $42 after tax and tip for one sushi roll and three mini salmon servings on fried pieces of lettuce. The food was good but not good enough to go back. Go somewhere else if you find yourself in Boston. If you do go, it can be reached easily by the T. Chinatown station and Downtown Crossing station are both a five minute walk away. read more

I think chaoshou pork wonton was too hyped up by yelp. chaoshou is what wontons are called in Sichuan cuisine, normally in soup base with chili oil, a very common street food dish. The dish taste like what chaoshou supposed to taste like, good but not life changing. Sashimi is fresh but portion is pretty small. Dynamite crab is crab salad on top of lightly fried rice bun/cake. I'm usually way too lazy/indifferent to leave Yelp reviews but I feel compelled to do so after an unforgettably terrible dinner at Ruka. This place is absurdly overpriced. If you're going to charge $18 for a cocktail and $20 for a basic sushi roll they better be damn good (they weren't). My total bill was $70 for one roll, two small plates (with even smaller portions) and a drink. If you're taking someone here on a date good luck getting out under $120. I don't mind spending money on a nice meal, but the service and quality were waaaaay below what one should reasonably expect at that price point. The service was brutal. Our waiter was MIA whenever we needed him. We saw a busboy sneeze directly into a dish and continue to deliver it. It took 80 (that's eighty, 8-0) minutes for our food to arrive. The last item to arrive, promptly at the 80 minute mark, was the cucumber salad. Our waiter told us not to worry though, turns out it's prepared at a different station than the rest of the food. Got it. By the time we realized they had forgotten our rock shrimp appetizer we opted to simply pass on it - we weren't too keen on waiting around another hour+ for a mediocre, overpriced and tiny dish. They do have a sweet Chihuly sculpture at the entrance, and the ambiance is nice. If you don't mind seriously overpaying and waiting around endlessly for your food to bask in the scene then this might be an intriguing spot. Otherwise, go pick up a few rolls from Whole Foods and a bottle of Pisco Sour - you'll get the same quality of Peruvian/Japanese fusion at a fraction of the price. read more

I came here the other night and I was amazed from the minute I walked in. The decor is really beautiful, modern and cool. We ordered what seemed like too much food (the waiter confirmed that it wasn't enough). Once the food starting coming out it was one delicious dish after another. The hamachi was the first dish that we had and it was full of flavor and had a great texture with crispy wantons. After that we had fried rice, pork dumplings, fried chicken, bok choy, and rock shrimp sushi. It was plenty of food for the three of us by the way. We were very excited to finally make a reservation and come to Ruka. The main reason is that we love Peruvian food & Japanese food so this did seem like the perfect spot. The location is nice and does seem very trendy inside. Very colorful, great place to grab a drink in the city. The part that isn't the best is the price and portions of what you are served. The menu looks great, so many items sound delicious and we wanted to order and try everything. That being said, 2 drinks and 4 "small plates" was over $100 which seems a bit like a scam. For a place that seems perfect for drinks & small plates, you leave feeling as though you were robbed. We ended up going out to another restaurant after just for actual food. The food did taste good. We ordered the street corn which was baby corn dressed with the regular street corn toppings. We also had the salmon tacos, the scallop ceviche and the wasabi tuna sushi dish. This place is so beautifully decorated. The environment completely matches the theme of the food and gives good vibes. I came in on a Friday night for a quick bite and drinks with friends without making a reservation prior, and the hostesses were extremely accommodating and sat us down quickly. We started off with drinks and they were delicious! From the glassware to the garnish, the drinks were amazing! Mine came with a rose that they torched so that it adds an extra scent while you drink the cocktail. On to food, I wouldn't recommend coming here is you're starving. This is a tapas/appetizer portion restaurant so it's not extremely filling. The prices aren't bad, but for the portion, you will not get your moneys' worth. I will say that the food is great though. The chefs definitely balanced all the flavors of each dish perfectly! We got the tuna tartare, yellowtail roll, and ceviche. All was devoured. I'll definitely be back!! read more

Don't bother going if RW set meal is all you can afford cause it's simply not worth it. Beware...there's a 3% mandatory kitchen surcharge in addition to your tax and tip. I think it's kinda stupid cause people who eat here can will usually tip very well; why pissed them off with balogney surcharge? RUKA is the new Liquid Art House, meaning that it is definitely the place you want to take your visitor friends when they come to Boston! The ambiance of the restaurant is very chic and upscale, reminding me of the NYC dining scene. Their artwork reflects their Peruvian & Japanese offerings in a tasteful way through artwork near the bar, and even their cocktail menu is a work of art itself since it is available for purchase with proceeds going to local charities! Because RUKA is pricey, I would recommend even coming in for drinks & apps. We tried the MORNING STAR, a strong raspberry & smokey flavor & JESUIT, a fruity concoction in a beautiful glass. Their cocktail menu is great because they describe every ingredient in the drink and even show what cup the cocktail will be served in. + SCALLOP CEVICHE ($20): The scallops were extremely fresh and bite sized. Paired with pomegranate seeds, chili oil, and and citrus marinade, this was a refreshing starter! - TORO WASABI ($26): I am a huge fan of toro, so when I saw this on the menu I knew I had to have it. Wait, $26? Is there GOLD in this roll?! So when it was served, I was disappointed to see that this roll has 8 tiny pieces of spicy tuna roll wrapped in toro and sprinkled with a pinch of caviar. Not worth it!! - RIBEYE ($16): The ribeye sounds like a substantial dish, but really it is two pieces of ribeye on two sticks. It is topped with ginger, butter, and garnish. Once again, not worth it. + OCTOPUS LOMO SALTADO ($17): Our last dish was worth it. I've never had octopus lomo saltado (usually steak), so it was cool to see this stir fry presented differently. I do with the shoe string french fries were thicker! They almost tasted like nothing, just for crunchy texture. Because we were trying to eat dinner here, the four plates with two drinks totaled ~$140. I would definitely come here again for cocktails and appetizers, but not sure that I would frequent here for dinner. read more

We went on a Friday and it was pretty noisy but that is to be expected. The drink I had (Mama Quillia) was also incredible! RUKA has a nice vibe and delicious cocktails. However, anytime you spend ~ $100 per person and walk away still hungry, something has gone wrong. RUKA serves what are essentially asian tapas, and they recommend 2-4 per person. We got 2-3 tapas per person, but as a lot of the tapas were small we ended up a little hungry at the end. We also got dessert, but it still wasn't enough. Favorite tapas included the rib eye, chicken fried rice, crunchy tacos, and scallop ceviche. The green noodles were okay but light on noodles. The sweet potato dumpling dish was a bit strange. If you are going to get dessert, go with the fried dough chachangas - they were great! read more

Worst customer service and business model EVER. Went in with a large group everyone wanting drinks and most people going to eat as it was our plan that evening. We had heard this place had cool decor and fun delicious drinks... WELL we don't know that and NEVER will. We were treated SO poorly by the hostesses... yes 'es' they had 3 hostesses working and the restaurant was only about 30% full on a Friday night. We clearly know why now they weren't full on a Friday night. They refused to seat 9 of us, weren't telling us what was going on, they were standing with their backs to us and standing on the other side of the bar talking about us. One host finally came over to us and said they don't know how to handle a party of more than 4..... they have an event planner who does all other larger parties. OMG PLEASE STFU. That IS THE STUPIDEST excuse I've ever heard. Not even sure I can call that an excuse.. it's just a lame, stupid comment that lost this restaurant $200- $300! I said while we stood there waiting to see if we were gonna get a table that if one of these hostesses was my child I would tell her she didn't do a good job and that she would need to try better next time. This treatment was completely uncalled for. We are all in our late 20s and 30s.. we weren't drunk or rowdy either. Just a little hungry and wanting some drinks to celebrate our friends' birthday that evening. I will NOT return. I hope others don't either. All in all a win! I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. I'm not really a Sushi person and I loved the menu! The decor is very (right now) - great design with back lighting and fireplaces and the music was a really cool custom mix. Perfect for all ages. The bar design with concrete interlocking blocks was really interesting. I don't believe there was a tv on the side I was sitting but the food was engaging enough. Service was very very good!
