Ryan Bros seems to have declined in quality over the last year or so, and it honestly seems like an issue with management. I loved getting the grazer sandwich but they weren't able to make it because they've been "waiting on an order" for more ingredients because all they had were tomatoes. That's fine, no problem. I went 2 other times within a month and they were still waiting on more ingredients. When I go in they seem understaffed and the baristas seem a little frazzled (understandably so). Customer service is always top notch despite this, and their new cold brews are amazing. Hope they read these reviews and turn it around because Ryan Bros used to be my go to coffee place! read more

My husband and I have been going to the San Marcos Ryan Bros for nearly 9 years. We absolutely love their coffee. We've introduced so many of our friends and family to it. Family visiting from out of state ask us to take them to Ryan Bros so they can buy coffee to take home with them. The people who work at Ryan Bros are wonderful! We love seeing them each weekend. They know us by name and are always so genuine in their actions. So why am I updating this review to only 2 stars if I love Ryan Bros so much? Because their management continues to show themselves to be inadequate, penny pinching, self centered individuals who are only focused on "the bottom line". Nearly a year ago, upper management took away the espresso machines. What coffee shop doesn't have an espresso machine? The line touted was that the new system (essentially a version of a French Press) was more environmentally friendly and produced a better end result. I can't speak to the environmental factor but the new "espresso" is most certainly NOT as good as it was when made with an espresso machine. We've stuck through though because we love the coffee and staff. But management may have finally laid the last straw. Their large, muffins (that are my weekend splurge) are now HALF their size and the SAME PRICE! Starbucks muffins are larger and nearly $1 cheaper! Seriously Ryan Bros?! I was in San Marcos for a company party and I'm the morning I definitely needed coffee! But I didn't want the same old Starbucks stuff..,... so I went on yelp and found Ryan Bros Coffee...... had good reviews and was close by...... I ordered the iced Mexican mocha latte and my husband ordered the iced Mexican mocha on tap. WOW the coffee was so good! Absolutely LOVE Ryan Bros Coffee! It's under new ownership and the quality is top notch. I was served by Jenna (owner's niece) recently and she was so kind and helpful. She was knowledgeable and made my spouse a custom drink that was better than what he usually gets at Starbucks. I love their iced mexi mocha w/oat milk. Be aware that if you order a bagel and like them toasted you may be a bit disappointed since they are, at most, very lightly toasted. Still love this place for coffee!! read more

First time here and was not disappointed, the ambiance of the place is really mellow and chill. Perfect for studying or just kickin it, I would highly recommend this spot for college students tryna find new spots to study or to take your breaks at. So moving on to the review, the staff was very welcoming especially once I said that it was my first time here. I was curious about all the types of cold brew and cold brew teas, the staff said that I could try all of them so they handed me samples of each ( I fcking love free sample so that's a plus ). I ordered the Raceway Expresso, pretty fire if you're into black coffee. I also ordered the Sunrise Breakfast Sandwich on a bagel, and this was prolly one of the best breakfast sandwich I had hands down this sht was fugeo! S/o to the staff! I can't speak to their flavored drinks, but they don't do a great latte. I got a regular iced latte and threw it out. They do not have whole milk and the latte itself was very bitter and burnt tasting. The bottom pooled black espresso that was gritty when I drank it. Pastries were few, overpriced, and didn't look great. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, or a bad pull, but I'll be headed down the street for future coffee breaks. The baristas were nice and gave great customer service, which is the second star. As for the coffee itself, one star. read more

Ryan Bros Coffee isn't my first choice to go to for a cup of coffee around San Marcos. However, it isn't a bad place to get a quick drink. Their coffee is alright and there's a large selection of specialty drinks to choose from on the menu. I don't have a "go-to" drink every time I visit, I usually try something new off the specialty menu and every time it's either a hit or miss. Definitely try your hand at something you may like, it really doesn't hurt. I'll go and visit every now and then to try something new, but like I said Ryan Bros isn't my first choice to go for coffee, I have yet to find that one drink I'll really like that'll make me want to come back frequently. read more

I love Ryan Brothers Coffee but the past year this location has been hit or miss. Mostly miss. I've been consistently disappointed. It's pretty bad when my friend and I will walk out if certain staffers are on the bar and go to Better Buzzed. There are a few employees who just can't make a good tasting drink. Overall, the staff is generally friendly and nice. However, the drinks have really been disappointing lately, super inconsistent, maybe something to do with changing their espresso. Also, a few months ago I had a circumstance where my espresso beverage tasted like cleaner, I drove back to have it remade and had to unfortunately argue with the barista. After a few minutes she decided to try it and to her surprise, she agreed. We couldn't figure out why it tasted that way. It was unfortunate but it's time wasting and too much money to spend on a below average drink. I prefer the Temecula location, consistent drinks and great food(paleo and gf) options, but I'm going to try not to loose hope on the San Marcos location. read more

No more old fashioned espresso. Yep, they switched to a French Press approach that Ryan Bros. invented, described by an industry newspaper as "just as good" as the beloved espresso machine brew. I ordered my usual Cafe Americano with this new system, and while the drink had the crema as promised, the drink lacked the depth and flavor that RB espresso previously delivered. It tasted more like a pour-over. Based on the article previously mentioned, the move was to break away from the reliance on unreliable espresso machines, their expensive maintenance and repairs from a temperamental design. I get that, cutting costs. But, I was there long enough to experience the new press exploding, sending hot coffee flying in all directions. The poor barista took the brunt of it, I was protected by the counter. All it takes is on litigious customer to undue any cost savings. I, for one, am prepared to pay for a traditionally prepared espresso, a drink RB had exquisitely mastered. Well, at least their muffins are still freshly baked and delicious. read more

Ryan Brothers is a quiet coffee shop! They don't have a lot of inside seating bit there is a lot outdoor seats. My favorite spot is the comfy chair in the corner that's perfect for reading. I love their white mocha, it gives you the perfect pep in your step. Ryan Brothers chai tea is more spicy then most but great for a cold remedy. They have incredible treats to drool over and if you fancy one, I say dive into the toasted coconut bar. read more

When I changed jobs and completed my transition to FULL NORTH COUNTY, I was nervous that I wouldn't find much in the area as far as food and beverage go, I mean, I don't really know much about San Marcos. Color me overjoyed when on the first day I drove by the closest strip mall and found one of my favorite coffee purveyors. I stopped in around lunch time on a day that I just needed an extra dose of coffee and ended up ordering a fancy mocha (okay, I got the same Mexican Mocha I always get at the BL location.) It was delicious as anticipated. The shop itself was cute and as expected, but the barista could have used some help. She was alone and while there were only four customers, it's a challenge to make drinks, take orders, and then also get the sandwiches taken care of as well. I totally understand waiting while the barista makes the drink for the person ahead of me, but it seemed odd she kept having to go to the back - I figured out that was to check on the food order another patron had placed. I'm excited that I now work down the street so Ryan Bros can be a regular destination. read more

I am here about 4 times a week, and have been coming regularly for about six months, so keep in mind that this is based on consistency and not on any single good or bad experience, which any coffee shop can deliver. That also explains the length of this review: I have a lot of material! PROS **Free refills (OF ANY DRINK!) **Free WiFi! **Great recommendations! If you don't know what you want, ask them to pick something for you. They'll ask a few questions to determine your taste preferences, then make you a specialty drink. I have never seen them go wrong yet. **Outside seating! **Non-dairy options! For those of you who want it, they carry almond milk now and soy milk. **Great location, easy access from the freeway, you can hop off, grab your coffee, and get back on the road. **The quality of the espresso is very good. Not always excellent, but always better than S-bux, in my opinion. Really nice crema on the espressos and fantastic flavor. **Great selection of teas. **Awesome vibe, nice colors and decor, and consistently frequented by cool and interesting people. And last, but not least... **The baristas are amazing. They know nearly all their regulars by name and take the time to chat with everyone for a moment or two, and not in that faux-interested way or annoying, overly personal way. Friendly, yet professional. Barbara is the best! But so is Daphne. And Ben. And Lucinda. They're all the best! Especially if you let them know you're new, they'll give you a bit of history of the shop and explain any menu items you're curious about. On numerous occasions, I have seen baristas give free drinks to someone they've observed is having a bad day, or someone who did a good deed (helping someone with a dead battery is one example that comes to mind). Just this morning a guy came in and ordered his drink on the way to the gym, then smacked his forehead and realized that he meant to come in on his way out of the gym. Barbara took his drink and told him not to worry about it, to just come back later and she would make him a new one. That's the reason people keep coming here. CONS --The hours leave something to be desired. I wish they were open till 11 or so. --It's a really laid back place (PRO!). They pull each espresso shot manually (PRO!) but that also means you'll spend a little longer waiting for your drink than you might at another place (CON). Definitely worth it to me, but just relax and know it will be out to you in four or five minutes, especially if they're busy. --It gets busy! Three or four times a day, there is a line out the door (10 people or so). It's that good, so just be patient. Other times, there are 2 or 3 people in line, and in the afternoon, there's a lull where the whole place empties for an hour or so. --Not much space inside. Seven tables and two bars, and there have been a couple times when I've arrived and found not an open seat inside. There is nice outside seating, though, so I guess this could be a pro or a con, depending on perspective. --The food selection is small. Besides muffins, bagels, cookies, and breads, They don't serve real food besides various puff pastries (ham and cheese, veggie, strawberry and blueberry). I wish they served sandwiches or salads or something like their Temecula location. All in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives for me. Give it a try; you'll see. My favorite place to write in North County. Not even close. Ryan Brothers offers a buy 9 get 1 free drink card. You get two stamps instead of one for each drink you order on Monday. Their drinks are on par in pricing with Starbucks and a lot better than the generic coffee chains. Their plain coffee, one of their cheapest drinks, is where yo get your best deal. The large cup is under 2 bucks and you get free refills for the entire day. Their selection varies, and often I find they have bold coffees available more often than lighter coffees. No complaints here since I love the bolds (their Broadway Blues is my favorite coffee of theirs; not every coffee is good, but some are amazing). Atmosphere is great. Don't get turned off if someone doesn't seem to know their stuff behind the counter; they recently hired a lot of new people as the shop is getting a lot more business with school back in session etc. The regular employees, especially the manager, know a lot about what they serve. The manager is also awesome; she has on more than one occasion whipped up an extra drink or something new and then given us samples of it just for being there. Free wi-fi as well. Hence why I'm always working here as it's just more comfortable than sitting at home. :) read more

About a year ago, my wife & I moved from Escondido to the San Elijo area & we immediately began searching for a decent local coffee shop, since we no longer lived down the street from Blue Mug. Ryan's Bro's is much different than Blue Mug, but certainly not in a bad way. In total juxtaposition to Blue Mug, their staff is very friendly (sometimes overwhelmingly so, but it's always fun), their shop is quirky but clean, and their coffee is smooth & bold. If you want to mix it up, try their mint mojito iced tea cooler. If you're feeling adventurous, ask for a mayan mocha with a splash of orange. It's like a kick in the throat. BONUSES- Free wifi, ample outdoor seating on a massive common patio, huge firepit, a fountain, a stage for outdoor concerts, an enormous outdoor projection system that shows family movies on Friday & Saturday evenings. This place has my girlfriends favorite cold brew in all SD. Their mocha is good as well. Staff, attitude and patience is always a big variable. You never know how many staff they will have and how long it will take. More importantly, there is a guy there that is always trying his hardest and smiling but unfortunately the rest don't follow suit. I drag my boyfriend to every coffee spot I learn about because I need caffeine every morning. I've been here a couple times before to study and I love the area (free wifi throughout San Marcos!? SWEET!!). Marc needed to do some work, so we stopped by Ryan Bros to get 'er done. I love the caramel drop latte and mochas! I always choose iced caramel drinks at any coffee shop, but there's something unique about this one. It's never too sweet and the coffee taste is always right, but the taste fluctuates each time. This would be my third Caramel Drop Latte, and it tasted more like butterscotch than caramel. Marc agreed, so I'm not bias. Still good, but not exactly what I expected. Since the taste of this drink differs each time, I had to knock off one star. As for the Iced Mocha, the chocolate taste is definitely in the drink, but it doesn't outshine the coffee. The atmosphere is fun and they don't take themselves too seriously and the coffee and pastries are yummilicious! During my first visit, I ordered a jalapeno cheese bagel and a regular decaf coffee. I love how they make the decaf coffee when you order it! Man, was I surprised! The coffee was delicious and smooth. Just like they said, it wasn't bitter at all! It was a nice refreshing change from Starbucks! The jalapeno cheese bagel was an even better surprise! It was flaky and reminded me of a croissant, I had to take a second look to make sure I didn't wrong order. The bagels I typically get at other coffee shops are gummy, but not at Ryan Brothers! The bagel was fresh and delicious! I also thought the prices for both the coffee and the bagel was very reasonable, much less than at the Starbucks! Don't buy a gift card here...unless it's for someone you don't like! I bought 5 gift cards here for co workers. I was charged for them, and none of the gift cards worked, they were all empty! But the more unfortunate part about it was that the manager Nareg didn't seem to care about how this had inconvenienced me and my co workers. At this point I have been partially reimbursed for the cards. Not once did Nareg apologize for the inconvenience or the error Ryan Bros. made. I am bummed because I work nearby, but sadly, I will not be frequenting Ryan Bros. any more and I doubt my co workers will either after the hassle they went through of trying to use empty gift cards. read more

I want to like this place because the service is always so great. I've never met a nicer group of baristas, ever. That's saying something. I've been to a ton of coffee shops in my lifetime. I've struck out on the last 2 drinks I've gotten. One was an iced coffee that just tasted off and way too sweet (after requesting 1/2 sweetness). The other was a tea latte that was SO bitter, I couldn't even take more than 1 sip. It was really, really, really bad. When I got to campus, it threw it out right away. I have gotten their Mexican Mochas with 1/2 sweetness and they are top notch. Maybe I just need to stick with what I know. You may not have the same luck as me, so give it a shot.
